Repairing a rusted unibody trailing arm mount.

- My rear trailing arm mount was rusted out. I cut it out and welded in a patch made of heavy gauge steel plate with new high grade bolts. It may be ugly but it is extremely solid. I painted it with rust-oleum professional which has served me better than other products including eastwood chassis black and rust encapsulator. 95 Saturn SW2.
UPDATE: This repair has over 10,000 miles on it and is holding solid!
Sometimes it's a shame that unibody cars that are rusted in a few problem spots are junked instead of repaired. I've had this Saturn for over 15 years, it's a good car that has served me well so when the engine chipped a valve I decided to rebuild it and go over the body seeking out rust. These mounts, some frame patches, and rockers were easy repairs to get this car back on the road.

What I did on my 2 Saturns is that I cut and welded an extension to the trailing arms and bolted the end to the strong transverse frame the holds the back of the front seats. It is still holding (2021)
@@willboaginnsandsons3817 - Sorry, no video. It is a simple hack, really. Just bolt the extended end to any part of the "frame" that is not rusted yet. It is much less work than repairing the frame rail.

Looks like a good repair to me. Yeah, the welds look a bit sad, but if that car was drivable with the rust, it will be fine. If I saw that under my car I would have scrapped it. Good job. I did cut a 65 Mustang into pieces and patched up the body with Chinese ill fitting patch panels which was a major job, but it seemed an appropriate thing to do to a 50 year old car. Now it's solid, but needs the pretty parts replaced or patched on the outside of the car. (Quarter panels, doors, fenders, hood, etc.)

Anyone think bolting through the bottom of the car if you cannot weld would work if the bottom of the car is not rusty. i have a 97 lumina slightly different connection than a saturn but same problem.
If the floor is still solid then it will hold it, but most likely if the trailing arm mount is rotted than the floor is rotted to so most people dont go that route

dude just found out i got same problem. idk what im gonna do . its not as bad as yours was. But if its rusted out like that is it safe to drive. Because i thought it was struts or my back Springs. making that noise. And if Im driving on the highway 55mil going around a turn and hit a hole my ,,,, rear end feels like it wants to jump out underneath me. idk man. if it save to drive

Mine wasn't as rusty it exactly snapped off from the the other arm
How thick of metal did you use
I used 2 layers 16ga steel welded together to do this same repair, welded on two M10X1.5 nuts and cut a square hole for the head of the trailing arm to clear.
Sure is difficult to weld upside down for me too. Maybe they need to invent a better welder that draws in the weld.

Anything can be fixed. It's just a matter of how much time and how much currency you want to throw at it.
Get yourself a cheap 110v wire welder and an angle grinder and you can fix most anything.

I just got one for 800 with one rusted off and the other one liable to fall off. Funny shit with these “engineered to fail” points.

Ive been a welder / fabricator for 13 years man...those welds are not good and they are not solid ...one good pot hole and that patch would rip off ...

It probably still is just "fine". But not good welds.
You gotta clean the absolute shite out of it... Like with different solvents and alcohol and everything. If you get it right, the weld can fall flatter than that ugly mess. Scrubadubdub or your welds won't hold up!

that car is a rotten death trap should be scraped then trying to patch it up my be there same car at a scrap yard that shell is better shape just switch the motor from your car into
Incorrect, as long as it was fixed properly it will be fine. It will actually me stronger than stupid spot welds
