    Jez, I was really impressed by this video. I'm a psychologist (& a climber obviously) and I was taken aback, in a good way, by your openness. You commented that "the boy is feeling a bit needy today." My work as a psychologist is with combat veterans, many of whom have service animals. "Neediness" is exactly how the animals usually react when my soldiers are... talking about something that is difficult for them. For years now, my friends, wife, etc. have been extolling various people's TH-cam channels saying "you've got to watch so and so" but I haven't been able to get into any of them. Yours is the first channel that I watch with abandon. I've learned so much. Cheers.

    I have a good friend who has run his own business for over 20 years and he says it comes down to 2 things financially 'What you need & what you want to earn' I'd imagine you've got that nailed and hence why you Love what you do.

    Great vid mate! As a new Guide myself this is exactly what I need to hear. I've been weighing up the financial side of things and how to really "make it" as a guide. My friends who are Guides and passionate climbers have been telling me what you just explained, how it's all about living a simple life and doing what we love as cheaply and simply as we can. Our riches don't lie in bank accounts and expensive items but in our day to day existence. PS: love your quaint little backyard with that view. Please make more vids in your yard 😍

    Hi JB when I was 18yrs old I did my first adventure training in Llanberis, where we would have mountain guides teaching us stuff , how to climb and navigate in a white out on Snowdon, and doing kayaking, the guides were impressed with my climbing skills and invited me to come down on the next Bank Holiday which just so happened to be the weekend after, so I cycled down that weekend from Manchester to Llanberis, the company was in Llanberis but it was called Bryn Du Adventures I think.. I asked them to teach me to become a mountain guide but was told I was to young, don't get me wrong the guys were brilliant and I guess they thought I was to young, by the time I reached 23 yrs old , I'd been a cycle racer and was working in a dead end job, so I decided to join the army , there I did all sports from running to cycling for the army, but by the time I reached 30 yrs old I decided to get out of the army , where in 1995 I decided I wanted to go into rock climbing and then 5 yrs on self taught myself to become and ice climber , I then reached 42yrs of age and decided to look into being a mountain guide plus wanted to be an ice climbing instructor, when I got in touch with Plas y Brenin outdoors training centre , I realised my dreams were crushed as I was in full-time employment and to do what I wanted required 6 weeks with them and the a further 6 weeks in Scotland with at least 3 climbs per day ... it basically put and end to my dreams... so I decided to go back into cycling from road bike to mountain biking, and now I've come full circle where after 18 yrs now I've started to get back into my mountaineering with camping in the winter, plus climbing snow and ice ridges like Crib Goch I did in Jan 2020 literally 3 weeks after a knee op 🙈🙈🙈 but all was good as I recover quite quickly... so now even though I can't fulfil my time as a mountain guide I still love getting out in the mountains, I also love it that I can take friends out who have never done it before ... I'm now 57 yrs young 😉👍🥾⛏ but if I could turn the clock back when I was 18yrs or even when I was in my 30s I'd definitely turn the clock back ... my bucket lists are also to do the Cuillin Ridge Traverse which I was planning on next week but bad weather and doing it solo wasn't on the cards, so hopefully I'll get my chances on doing the Eiger and Matterhorn next year ... so watching your channel and helping me get back into my climbing is really helping me as I'm a little rusty after nearly 15 yrs of not climbing.. Still got it in me and hoping to tick of my bucket lists one by one ... sorry for this huge life of mine ... but guiding and taking people up mountains has always been my dream .. your a lucky guy JB and thanks for your info ... really appreciate it... ps bought you coffee in one of your channels... 👍😉🤟

    Have you considered not apologising for the 'waffle' (your term)? Personally, love the waffle, dislike the pre-emptive apologia. For me, your 'waffle' in your videos is where the value lies.

    I really liked this video. I finished my instructor apprenticeship last year and I had so much trouble with it because of covid and places closing. I ended up working for three different companies over two years to complete what should have been a one year course. But I’m so glad I stuck with it because I’m starting to see the benefits it’s given me in the industry. I managed to secure a job for this season through someone I’d worked with previously. So yeah thanks for a good video it’s really encouraging to learn about other people, who are much more experienced than me, and their journeys

    Enjoyed this, found it inspiring. I went to ljmu 2016-2019 and got a degree in outdoor Ed, you probably know a couple of my lecturers! Had all the aspirations of finishing with all my Ngbs, turns out they where harder to get amongst the actual uni work. Beside the degree I finished with a paddle sport instructor qual and only managed to get my ML last year.
    Thought I’d be able to start working as an ML freelance pretty easily, turns out it’s not as simple! A I live in Liverpool B I have to make sure I’ve got constant money for wife, kids, house etc l. So I’ve started making my own website in the hope I can get the ball rolling that way. This vid Spurs me on to get that finished and to also get my RCI done this year! Cheers!

    An honest appraisal Jez. I suppose it boils down to having a lifestyle that suits you and is sustainable. Your turnover is small considering the time and effort you put in, but how much value can you put on loving the “job”? Happiness is the most important thing and this can only come with knowing what you want, having some control and the headspace to make sure you can enjoy it. Well done on getting there.

    • @JBMountainSkills
      @JBMountainSkills  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As a one man band, only occasionally using another instructor for the odd day here and there. I wouldn't really want to turn over much more! That would mean either working more, or employing more people and have to do a shed load more behind the scenes work! I need 3 months off per year as it is.
      In all likelihood, turnover will be a little higher moving forwards, mainly down to TH-cam driven bookings, but I do say no to stuff as balance is massively important to me, and with my expenses being pretty low its definitely enough for me :)

    • @nathanheywood2200
      @nathanheywood2200 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd suggest the value of loving the job equates to 5 - 10 x turnover, just as a ballpark figure.

    Thank you. Love the channel. I have hopes of doing my M.L. one day. Can you please recommend:
    1. A tent which is strong enough for summer M.L. but would also be light weight enough for long distant hikes
    2. A sleeping bag (down?) warm enough for summer M.L. but light weight.
    Many thanks
    Imran

      @fredrikkeate411 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Imran,
      Jez actually has a video about the Nordisk Telemark tent, worth checking that out.
      If you want an affordable and fairly lightweight down bag the Alpkit bags are decent, I also like spending my days on Ultralight outdoor gear.com they give good info on all their kit and you can even order search results by weight (not affiliated just like their site)
      Good luck with the ML, it's a great course and a cracking job 👍

    • @JBMountainSkills
      @JBMountainSkills  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As Fredrik kindly points out, I've done a review on one of my tents that mentions other ones too, might be of interest!
      I'd also echo the Alpkit comments for a sleeping bag (I do prefer down), I have one of their bags and it's lasted well, especially as they're competitively priced!

    • @trytheoutdoors
      @trytheoutdoors 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Jez and Fredrik. Jez - I note in another video that you are highly critical of the Telemark due to condensation. You mention the Sierra Designs. Are walking pole tents ok for the mountains...above the tree line? I have been looking at the Vango f10 helium UL2. The Holy Grail for tents: Strong enough for the mountains, light enough for long distance walking. I'll settle for a good 3 season tent and just avoid extreme winter conditions. Any thoughts, sir?

    Hi Jez. Another great video. My question is to do with insurance. Who would be some of the better companies to look at and what sort of cover should you get? Cheers

    • @JBMountainSkills
      @JBMountainSkills  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Public liability and professional indemnity would be the norm, plus employers liability if applicable. I'm not an expert in this field so I'd seek further advice if you're unsure.
      AIM & Insure4Sport seem to be very popular ones at the moment
