That was good to hear. I have an idea on how I'd like the ML to work (I think?) But knowing I'd need to be employed alongside it. I'm also going to have a think about skilling up in other areas. A constant reinvention of myself.
I never had the confidence to go freelance. I got all the tickets working for a PGL type organisation and outdoor centres but allways woried about picking up an injury and not getting work, the "buffer " that you mentioned. I went down a Social worker route that allowed me to earn a much better wage and do my outdoor pursuits. Teaching or social work and an outdoor pursuits instructor seems to offer far more security for people starting out.
Would be really interested to see a video detailing your seismic work. Been looking into my ML recently and found your videos to be really interesting.

Another fab video! As a teacher with a young family, I find the security of my current job too attractive and necessary at the moment. I have my ML, working toward my RCI and have ambitions of MCI in a few years. Hoping to retire early and go for the instructor life then. This has helped me formulate my plan massively, thanks for that 👍
Interesting Jez. I have a friend who didn’t have much of a plan, which worked for a while until it got to the point when he really questioned what he was doing after the admin side of the business began to hit home and he started to lose his love for instructing and the sport he enjoyed so much. That’s when he sat down with his sheet of paper and restructured his business, doing the sorts of things you mentioned eg. employing someone else for odd days. Now he is much happier, has more time and his effort is more efficient and effective. Finding that balance is really the crux and from where I sit requires good planning, courage and plenty of self-belief. Much of that, it would appear, only comes once you have some experience and/or a mentor of some kind. There is no shortcut for experience, but you can work smarter and tap into people like yourself Jez. That said it is up to the individual to put the hard yards in. Thanks for making me keep my brain active and giving me somewhere to waffle!
@@JBMountainSkills i guess but we can't all enjoy our jobs all of the time as much as it pains me to say that. i would rekon if you enjoy instructing and the sense of achievment helping people to meet their goals then you could easily do it on the water as well. ps its not that hard and you dont have to be that good at the sport yourself to run a safe fun session as i am sure you know having taught many climbing instructors etc ;)

Pleasure! That's a tough one, hard to get the balance right! I'm not sure really, building your name and reputation is key, so I reckon just getting out there doing as much as your wife / family / mortgage allows! In terms of building experience for further quals, I always think that's the easy bit, if you love climbing for example you'll be getting out climbing anyway, so the logbook fills ourself out.
I’m not completely dialled on the US system but I believe the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor that we have is similar to the Rock Guide qualification.
Having done archery instructor training course and HML training you really shouldn't do an archery course we spent most of 2 days in a classroom! HML was much more fun
Starting a apprenticeship soon to get my rci and hml, can't wait!

kayaking and canoeing etc takes place in the winters ;) not enough water in summer so its a perfect contrast imo

outdoor instructor jobs page on facebook often has DoE work advertised, could try picking up work on days you have free
im starting the guiding pipeline but im in America, do you know the parallels of the guiding levels in the UK vs here?
