Auto start stop has to be the most annoying feature to grace the earth. Not only does it shut the engine off while at a light and if you need to go quickly the engine can’t, it’ll destroy the engine quicker than it was designed, and it doesn’t even save fuel because the engine is turning on and off. At least some cars let you turn it off like mine does
My 2002 Prius starts and stops so seamlessly that it's far more annoying running for no reason than off. The engine has survived 23 years of starting and stopping with only regular oil changes and recently new ignition coils and spark plugs.

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) is the worst thing. I had a BMW X5. I bought new tires from a local dealer (KT), and a couple weeks later hit a piece of metal with the tire and ripped the sidewall to the cord only. When I went back to the dealer KT they would not let me buy just one tire and insisted that all 4 had to be replaced (they had less than 1000 km on them at the time). I was told that since the tires were used the overall diameter had changed due to the number of miles driven, I would be required to replace all four. Having one tire with a different diameter would damage the AWD system on the vehicle. I had to buy new tires so went to another dealer, and haven't been back to the KC again.
Sadly that is true for BMW AWD vehicles, all tires must be exactly the same, same date of fabrication, same mileage, same tread pattern, same exactly EVERYTHING. Otherwise some component of the AWD system will be damaged. They were really trying to save you a lot of trouble. If you only bought one tire, replace all 4 immediately.
It is of course a bunch of crock. The 4 wheel drive (at least on my car) is not 50% front and 50% rear. It's mainly front and much less rear, only if pushed hard (occasionally) the rear engages at 50%. So your tires WILL wear unevenly - the fronts wearing down faster than the rears. The fronts being the steering wheels will also contribute to the faster wear in addition to being the main driving wheels.
Wow, thanks for sharing Bill. Yes that can seriously happen and does happen. These vehicles have systems that are too finicky at times and although the X5 overall is not a bad vehicle, its this equipment that causes the need for these extra costs.
Thank you Mark! You advise me to stay way from the Chevy Blazer with 3L with 284 HP. I got the Chevy Blazer with the 3.6L natually aspirated V6. Even a Chevy salesman confirmed what you advised me.
I had a Subaru Forester that had a CVT transmission. I had added a tune to the car, and found that under load on a steep grade the transmission began to smoke. I should have known better and traded it for a VW with dual clutch. The trans is a good one but I am still a little afraid if it. I have done the maintenance (filters and fluid changes) and the trans seems to work well, but I am still a fan of the torque converter as it has a 100 yr track record, and I am willing to give up that small amount of fuel economy for a more dependable transmission. CVT are junk.
Absolutely right about the CVT. Can't see ever owning a car with one as they are whiney and buzzy as teh engine always feel like its hummming along but the reliability is weak to say teh least.DCT is great but a litte costly. Torque converter auto is easy and works. I personally would not be sad if all vehicles were manual these days.
I like the central display on my Mazda. No touchscreen but a rotary dial / joystick knob -thing and separate manual controls for the AC. Really easy to use.
It shows that most people buying cars are not "Car People". hey are buying it based on the tech controls and gimmicks. Heck when you check out a car they don't even talk about the engine or drive train. I am an old dude and like the old school cars and tech. I have had BMW but was very disappointed in the vehicle. The engine has major issues that BMW knows about but declines not to remedy. My VWs are both good cars (I still do maintenance) and although I like their performance I worry about the faults in the engines (timing chains). My Touarag they put the timing chains in the rear of the engine and the whole engine has to come out to repair them. If you do your maintenance religiously with a good shop that you trust, you will never have problems (unless of course you drive the crap out of it...that's not good either). E very vehicle has problems so make sure you do your due diligence before buying new or used.
You are quite right and while most people like a little innovation, we clearly have run beyond the tipping point and most enthusiasts prefer simplicity
I learned how to drive the old school way, paying attention to what I'm doing without back up cameras and lane departure warning and hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. These new gadgets that These new drivers are relying too much on couldn't drive then and they drive like Mr Magoo now
You are so right. Many modern drivers cannot drive without this tech. Awkward indeed. They also say almost nobody knows how to drive manual nowadays and it makes and theft deterrent system, lol
Some drivers convert from runflats, but two problems are: no space to store the spare, and not matching the tires' circumference, which could affect the speedometer.
I also HATE RUN FLATS.......By law if you ever get any flat even small seemingly leak you must replace the complete Dog Run Flat. ....... I dumped my run flat at the show room and got the dealer to replace w/ Michelins... Night & Day better...as run flats are Harsch ridinf i.e. Tire in a tire & the Michelin's have far less rolling resistance......IMO a spare tire is bad as you must R & R the tire out on a hwy & even the jack may fall (Opp's bad hair day!) NOPE I always carry a string impregnated w Tar insert er rotate the tire ..remove nail w/ pliers and simply insert string, cut off excess and & I carry a a nice Dewalt tire inflater... SAFER and solves diff tire size!
Yes you are right and some research should be done before selecting that route. I have seen though, that often space exists and they just put filler or unnecessary equipment there.
The average driver has a puncture or slow leak on average every 130,000 kilometres (this is a very old stat. - should be better now?) Had my first flat (a slow leak) in 16 years - used a can of “slime” so didn’t even need the spare. Tyre Service next day washed out slime and repaired puncture (a small screw) Will not entertain these terrible run flats - ok with a standard spare or a space saver and a can of “slime” for small/slow punctures.
As a disabled driver I dread buying my next car where everything is controlled via a touch screen. Whereas I can manage to operate knobs and switches no problem.

Hi there, how have you been? Great choice on the Lexus with the older naturally aspirated engines as many of those are a much simpler drivetrain thats a little easier to fix, maintain, and certainly last a lot longer than the newer turbo engines. There is, in my opinion, a shift to the consumer who values the latest tech and bragging numbers over outright longevity as the latest consumer in general has a short attention span and is bored in 2-3 years. Sadly the industry as a whole is shifting this way and that leaves us with the response. Products with cool "new' factor but clearly not going to last like the older vehicles. Hope your week is going great.
Wow! Great information. I recently went from a 2008 Mazda 3s Sport with the 5 speed auto to a 2017 Passat SE 1.8L TSI w/technology (the odo just hit 100K today). My Mazda had brake assist and hill hold assist which I loved and that was about it for modern tech. The VW has lots of cool features. I can set a speed warning (my insurance co. likes that) but thankfully, there is no speed limiter. There might be a top speed limiter but I'll never have to worry about that! I will never rely on the camera for backing up; only to "see" around other parked cars before I back up using my mirrors and OMG swiveling my head from left to right a few times while backing up. I love all the features of this 2017 era semi-luxury car but remain vigilant as a driver that ultimately, I am responsible for being a safe driver. At some point after 2017, VW got rid of the chrome exhaust tip and went for the fake stuff. Not a fan of the fakeness, either.
turbo charging was first used in the 1960s on the Oldsmobile Starfire/Jetfire models and of course there were 4 Cylinder cars in the 80s that had turbo chargers on them such as the Subaru XT etc. its usually to get more power out of a smaller engine for instance the classic GM 231 V6 used in the 5th and 6th generation Buick Skylarks and several other GM cars in the late 80s through the mid 2000s for compact midsize and full size cars

I agree with all your comments, my pet hate is run flat tyres. I had a "C" class Mercedes with run flats. The vehicle rode rough on these tyres, the tyres were noisy, and wore out quicker than normal tyres. Replaced them with normal tyres, car rode better but with long distances in Australia and no spare ( I carried a tyre plug kit and compressor ) the vehicle was not suitable for Australian conditions. Bought an NX Lexus, and that had a space saver - much better car - due for a new NX and they are now on run flats, and no spare, even the non hybrid version. What are car manufactures thinking?
My C class had run flat Continentals and they were awful (all the reasons you mentioned), replaced them with Michelin PS 4s (regular tires) and completely transformed the car, Not sure why the car companies got hoodwinked by the tire companies
@@YYZ-SRQ Not so sure the car companies have been hoodwinked. They probably pushed for run flats to be developed. They say it's to save weight, but methinks it saves the companies dollars - no spare tyre, no jack, no tools, and as they say you have free road side assist under warranty. No good to anyone stuck roadside at 10 o'clock at night between cities with still many hundreds of kilometers to go with side wall damage ...
Just to clarify, all new cars sold in the European Union from 7th July 2024 must have a speed limiter (ISA) fitted and activated. Cars in Great Britain will probably have it fitted but it is not required by law to be activated (since GB left the European Union). It’s probably only a matter of time before it comes to us all 😢
Here, here! You’re the FIRST and ONLY person I’ve seen who’s not in love with technology, the more the better. I used to work in the IT field, but I think that cars and motorcycles have WAY TOO much technology. Case in point is my 2012 Ford Explorer with over 100,000 miles. The screen on the center console went black, and it turns out that it’s what’s called the APIM. As a result, I haven’t had air conditioning, heat, stereo, back up camera, GPS, Bluetooth, etc.. going on the third year, because it costs so much to replace that module. Three years ago, the dealer wanted over $1,000 for the module, and I’m sure the labor would probably be about the same. For someone trying to live solely on Social Security, so that’s a lot of money for me. It’s insane when the vehicle is only worth $5,000 to $6000! And I’ve checked the forums, and what I have to look forward to is what used to be a simple water pump replacement, but now runs between $3,000 and $5,000, because they built the water pump INTO the engine, so the engine must be disassembled and or pulled out just to replace the water pump. So it’s not only expensive electronic technology, but also mechanical design. I’ve owned the vehicle since it had only 3,000 miles on it, and mechanically it’s been fairly reliable. But it’s mostly the electronics that go out and are costly. You’d expect that they would last virtually forever because there’s no moving parts to wear out, whereas the major mechanical components, like the drivetrain have been very reliable, and would probably last another 100,000 miles. I’m fortunate that the SUV still drives, and that I still have a speedometer, odometer, fuel, gauge, etc., because they are on a separate screen in front of the steering wheel. Motorcycles are no better. I have a friend who has a new BMW GS Adventure bike, and within just a few months its fancy LED headlight that follows the turns, went out. The part alone (ONE headlight) is $1,500 and most motorcycle dealer shop rates are approaching $200 per hour, and automobile dealers are not far behind. And some motorcycles now you have to pay extra to have certain electronic features “unlocked“, and the subscription model will probably be next. The cost of ownership of ANY vehicle with high technology is extremely high once those electronic components start going out. Nobody talks about that, but they should. It’s a well kept dirty little secret behind all of this high technology. At my age, my next vehicle will probably be my last, so IF I’m somehow able to afford one (4 wheels or 2), it will be one with as little technology as is possible. Thank you again for getting the word out!
Toyota does have a physical 1st gear that takes most of the stress off their cvt... Also you are right about small turbo engines, my friend has a trailblazer with that puny 3 cylinder engine and is burning oil at 15k miles...
Great video. My 17 year old car has a manual transmission. No turbo. No electronic gizmos to go wrong. As the nanny state grows, this is only going to get worse and more expensive. And now big government wants high speed, automatic braking. Anyone remember destruction derby?
Great info. In the market for a new mid sized SUV as my Volvo RX90 is acting up after 7 years. Unlike my 2011 Mini Cooper Countryman…..which is running great. I took off those run flats as they were not only expensive but gave the car a rough ride. So I put some regular tires on it and that created a much smoother ride .Additionally the Mini is a base model…literally no extras just air bags which is probably why is is still running great. Keeping it for at least another 3 years. But that Volvo had all the bells and whistles the start stop…all the sensor, self driving, park assist, sensors galore……so I am convinced to get a more base models after seeing this video.
For years Lexus has had a really stupid mouse pad. Now the screen is touch sensitive, but the mouse pad is still there. They're extremely awkward to use even when stopped. Regarding your comments on turbo charging. I recall the early days when they were used on the drag strip when engine life was replaced for performance. They don't belong in everyday use cars and I agree that buying one could be a mistake.
I might have missed it Mark but that crap Active Fuel Management is another one. Most of those other features wouldn't suck so bad if there was an easy way to disable them........and i don't mean pushing a button every damn time u start it. Actually being able to turn it off.
I had an automatic gear car, i spent 600 dollars replacing the park switch bc the car didnt recognise it was in park. So now i have stickshift. Keep it simple i says.
OEM Turbo truth: It's an emissions thing why manufacturers are doing it. Turbos get very hot and blow hotter fumes into your catalytic converter. This brings emissions down that manufacturers are forced to do. As an added bonus, you get extra torque from it. They also are very reliable but the issue isn't the turbo that makes engines fail. It's the way engines are being built these days to bring emissions down.
I have (ISA) Intelligent Speed Assist on my Mazda 3 in the UK. Fortunately it only gives an audio warning and can be switched off. This is just as well because last week I was driving on a UK motorway through road works with a 50 mph limit unfortunately the car thought the limit was 10mph. Can you imagine if the car had actually slowed down, even worse had the limit been the normal 70mph. What also caused a problem on this journey was lane assist. The carriageways had also been narrowed in order to help with the work but the car picked up the old road markings and tried to push me into the next lane. I am able to turn off all these “safety” features but it’s a pain having to do it every time I start the car. However the stop/start is very good and you aren’t even aware its turned on
Everyone should be able to park their car with nothing but pedals and mirrors if they have to. If they want to use the tech to make it easier after that, enjoy. But you need to be able to do it if it fails.
Completely agree with your points. Hate uncalled-for technology - superfluous and expensive to fix. Precisely why I purchased a Phase IV V6 Lexus rather than Phase V. Love the physical buttons, beautiful interior and finish and every button is a delight to use. And I chuckle when so-called influencers say it is ‘dated’. Jaysus, they are so out of touch (excuse the pun). Ha!
I got a check engine light and the code was for the Stop/Start feature. It went away when I added windshield washer fluid and never came back. I hate Stop/Start
I agree with all but the backup cameras and sensors. For my car (Chevy Camaro) the visibility is so bad that you really do need backup cameras to reverse park, and even then it’s extremely difficult. For most cars like my mom’s HRV I do think it’s detrimental to driver skill and that is easy to park without these assists, but with my Camaro trying to reverse park on an incline, fighting to not stall or accidentally launch the thing in reverse while also trying to figure out where the corners of the vehicle are despite being unable to see them and being so low in the cockpit is already a nightmare with cameras and sensors and it’s even worse without them. When my backup camera broke on it when I got rear ended it became impossible to park backing in to a spot due to how bad the visibility was, which was very rough.
High tech front headlights are extremely costly to replace The headlamp replacement cost for many vehicles can easily cost $2k to $3k or more for EACH lamp!
In 1987 I bought a 1986 Mazda 626 Turbo and everyone said that a Turbo would be completely unreliable, I drove that car to 300,000km and had it for 16 years. It wasn't the engine that spelled the end of the car but it was the box around it as by that time rust started to settle in. I currently have a Turbo engine car and prior to that a Supercharged one and so far they have been bulletproof. However if I would have a choice I would take Supercharging over Turbo as you have instant throttle response and better power at the lower end. S-C are parasitic and hardly found today as auto manufacturers try to find the most efficiency. Almost 40 years ago I drove my turbo everywhere and I would like to think that technology has improved in the years since

Unfortunately, my car has a 4 cylinder engine with a turbocharger AND s supercharger. Plus, it has a stop/start "feature", which I thankfully van disable. My car also came standard with a glass sunroof that I never open and didn't want. It's not uncommon for roof drains to clog and can cause interior water damage if not properly maintained. Also, most of my car's functionality is in the infotainment system, which replaces dash switches. Lastly, although my car has a spare tire, the vast majority of cars no long contain a spare tire.
That slowing down when you approach a car's back end is going to cause you to get rear-ended in a situation where you have to get up on someone's back end and then quickly get around them to avoid being rear-ended ...the last thing you need is for the car to slow down.
I do like a reversing camera as our Suzuki Baleno it does have a bit of tech but still has a lot of mechanical items hand brake cable operated fuel door cable operated automatic shift cable operated no stop start 1400cc naturally aspirated port injection and no turbo and it runs well and has no problem cruising at 110 kph also gets over 50mpg imperial on the highway also 1997 Toyota Hilux has no tech at all even has a carburator and it will last and last the Hilux will out live me simplicity equals reliability and extreme longevity
KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) applies to everything; certainly cars. Surprised the car manufacturers never figured that out...but then they had incentives to do otherwise.
When the time comes where I need a new car, it will be a used 2021 or older model. No more new cars for me. The times where a new car could get me exited are over, it would be more of a worry, how long will it last. I would not put it past any corporation to have programmed fault popping up at a certain mileage.

@@watchmanonthewall14 thanks for hoping I didn't already know that. Now give us the numbers that you're not going to post for how many people have been harmed by seatbelts. That would be great.👍
@@paulcox4807 I've read about men who have gotten their wee wees pinched in the seatbelt while snapping the belt on, thereby giving them painful, swollen blood blisters. There was a class action lawsuit about it, and each man was awarded a year's supply of band aids and ten dollars for pain and suffering.
I had to buy new tires so went to another dealer, and haven't been back to the KC again.
are you referring to Kal Tire?
Total nonsense. The dealer was trying to sell more tires. I have a BMW X DRIVE and was never told to replace all tires at once.
Thanks for watching and inappreciate the feedback
Great video. I absolutely agree with all your insights. Especially those ludicrous start/stop systems. Thanks for the video.
Glad it was helpful!
Recently got a Corolla with a CVT, and I confirm it is boring to drive. Glad I still have my 2014 Accent too.
almost everything Toyota makes is boring to drive. The only exciting cars they have are made by 2 other companies
- should be better now?)
Had my first flat (a slow leak) in 16 years - used a can of “slime” so didn’t even need the spare. Tyre Service next day washed out slime and repaired puncture (a small screw)
Will not entertain these terrible run flats - ok with a standard spare or a space saver and a can of “slime” for small/slow punctures.
As a disabled driver I dread buying my next car where everything is controlled via a touch screen. Whereas I can manage to operate knobs and switches no problem.
Excellent episode Mark!
I'm still keeping my '06 Acura TL, V6, 6-speed manual ... no turbo, no GDI.
Honda should stop building turbo CVT junk
My cars a V6 OHV engine pushrods in all I find these types of engines very reliable.
And I'm still keeping my 08 Avalon. Naturally aspirated engines are the way to go (if you want reliability and long lasting)
I'm surprised you didn't mention lane keep assist
All this tech is actually making people worse drivers. No one can backup without using a camera.
I had a 2018 Kia and it did more than assist, it kept you within the white lines.
Yes, Yes! Too many sensors, tech, etc. it has place in operating the vehicle. But, when it takes away from DRIVING the vehicle I’m done.

Absolute truth!
Back in 2015 a single nail cost over $2.5K to replace ALL the tires in a BMW Coupe. So much for run-flats...
Oh, and the recent auto-reverse-parking feature. Developed specifically so that people never learn how to park!

Avoiding many of these features means severely limiting your choice of vehicles nowadays... Or being stuck with base models.

I have a 21 Toyota highlander 6 cylinder and I think in time these Highlanders are going to have better resale valve than its new Highlanders
That could be especially with all Toyotas. The older ones are more reliable and people are finding this out already
So glad I got my NA lexus is 350 before it's ruined with a turbo. I completely agree with you. It's great tech but not for a every day car
yeah same here, got a 2021 IS 350 last month and planning on keeping it for a long time before all these companies start throwing turbos and going full EV
@@Reekostory it's a great car. I absolutely love it. So gorgeous that's built to last. It literally has a truck drive train in the AWD version

Cheers
The most I watch your videos the most I love my ‘13 Camry XLE 😃, no turbo, no CVT, I would liked to have ventilated seats or a/c seats 😜
The electronic parking brake is a piece of tech that I could do without. It’s called “parking brake” but it’s really an emergency brake.
I agree, keep it simple.
Vehicles are built to break, planned obsolescence
Yes poorly made these days
This is why I still drive a car that’s 20 years old. It’s basic but that’s all I need all this tech in these cars today is ridiculous.
True especially for a daily driver, simple is great

Yeah prior to my Lexus I had a Subaru Legacy 3.6R. Great engine but terrible CVT. rid of it after a year and bought the Lexus RC which I have had over 7 years so far. The paint on the Legacy was garbage too and scratched so easily😊
Bought my V6 naturally aspirated lexus and a V8 land cruiser. Both new so hopefully will last me my lifetime so I won't have to embarrass myself by buying a hybrid with CVT or worse still an EV
New LEXUS's have " ecvt"... NOTE: This is a “NOT” repeat, not a CVT gearbox on the NX, ( many that can not afford this vehicle “try” to put it down by trying to spread this FALSE propaganda (do your research) ...this is not a CVT vehicle!)......it is an “ e-CVT “which is an epicycloidal transmission and no belt of any kind. eCVT is completely different from a cvt. eCVT doesn't use belt/band. Nothing are the same.
It's a transmission that contentiously varies, the mechanics are different but the outcome is the same !
.Far better and No bands!
Great combo as the new ones are not going to last like the previous generations

50K for the average car and they are sucking the life out of us. It used to be exciting to buy a new car. Not no more! A lot of these features you have no choice. Start / Stop when the AC is on; Precious!

Keeping it simple is often the best for longevity
It’s probably only a matter of time before it comes to us all 😢
Opel has kept the physical knobs consistently. Kudos.
Great video - thanks for sharing your knowledge. 😎😎😎
Toyota does have a physical 1st gear that takes most of the stress off their cvt... Also you are right about small turbo engines, my friend has a trailblazer with that puny 3 cylinder engine and is burning oil at 15k miles...
I agree with these evaluations. This man is "spot on".
Thank you
473k K's on my old camry wagon, 5 speed 4 banger huge 70 litre tank goes for ages... a keeper
Until some little part you can't get breaks. I've already been down that road.
Government is the reason why these are happening, not the automakers faults
Meddlers.
Absolutely my friend. Next up will be firearms with sensors… if your gun denotes your pulse rate too high - gun will not function. 😢
Great video. My 17 year old car has a manual transmission. No turbo. No electronic gizmos to go wrong. As the nanny state grows, this is only going to get worse and more expensive. And now big government wants high speed, automatic braking. Anyone remember destruction derby?
I love my 2021 Avalon TRD. no turbo crap to deal with, no electronic battery system to die in 10 years.
True turbos have great performance, but for daily driven cars used for regular commutes, it’s not necessary and often reduces economy and lifespan
I might have missed it Mark but that crap Active Fuel Management is another one. Most of those other features wouldn't suck so bad if there was an easy way to disable them........and i don't mean pushing a button every damn time u start it. Actually being able to turn it off.
You are so right
A little speed can get you out of trouble is you have awareness of other drivers.
However the stop/start is very good and you aren’t even aware its turned on
Auto industry gesture controls 🖕

It’s a bit much, really
Gesture controls in the Atlas work pretty decent although it's not a very useful feature

Ha!
Once you realize a car isn't a laptop you'll be making the right decision
CVTs sucks!!! 💯 agree with you on this…

Also these downsized engines begin consuming oil after a relatively short time due to low tension piston rings and 0-8, 0-16 and 0-20 oils.
Love the Dad sandals Mark! Gots me a pair :)
Glad you like them! Haha, yes not many sandal wearing days around here dominate advantage when I can
I am happy i have a more simple, port injected, non turbo gas car from 2013.
Exactly why I bought a 22 Lexus RX 350. No turbo V6. No start/stop
Almost 40 years ago I drove my turbo everywhere and I would like to think that technology has improved in the years since
I love your videos. They've evolved into something completely different from your original videos which, while amusing, weren't as informative as your current videos. Thanks

I love my 2008 Accord with none of this lol
Indeed the old ones are great

That slowing down when you approach a car's back end is going to cause you to get rear-ended in a situation where you have to get up on someone's back end and then quickly get around them to avoid being rear-ended ...the last thing you need is for the car to slow down.
Days of the electric antenne are over ?.... (so useless !)
Exactly right. Would be great to go back strictly to manual transmissions too
When the time comes where I need a new car, it will be a used 2021 or older model. No more new cars for me. The times where a new car could get me exited are over, it would be more of a worry, how long will it last. I would not put it past any corporation to have programmed fault popping up at a certain mileage.
Most useless design is powered seat with heat function, who adjust the seat everyday ? Who needs heated seat when car's heater on? Can up to 35 degree when heater turned to maximum. But powered seat is about 20kg heavier than manual and get one more thing to repair if it's broken
Thanks for sharing. The power seat feature I agree is simply too much weight and largely unnecessary but here is Canada in the middle of winter, heated seats are great as the heater does not heat seating surfaces enough for awhile
Good stuff keep it coming 😊😅😂
