      My writing was very bad until I discovered flex nibs, I guess because they force me to write more deliberately. I can't believe the cool stuff that comes out of the pen, compared to when I write with normal pens. Now I have to try this mod, I have used Zebra G nibs in dip pens, get tired of dipping. This should be fun.

      @@murrayelliot Looking at the site you linked, it looks like they are taking a $5 Jinhao X450 and putting a flex nib in it, charging $50. I'd have to have some reputable names recommending a $45 steel flex nib before I would buy it.

  • @murrayelliot
    @murrayelliot 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    FPR now does a super-flex nib (which wont rust like the G-nib does), so perhaps no need now to frankenpen this particular pen (also the Ebonite feed is much better than the plastic for ink flow)
    By far the best way to use the G nib is as it was designed. In a dip pen holder, it's a great nib.

    I tried the Jinhao before with the G-pen nib, it just leaks and blobs all over the place, never could get a useable pen out of it. BUT, the Ahab, that I have and just has no real flex, even with Noodler's flex slit nib, WORKS INCREDIBLY WELL WITH THE G-pen NIB! This is the first time I've ever got any Franken pen to actually work for doing cartooning. The G-Pen nib flexes even better with the longer part sticking out more. I hope it continues to do what its doing now, with Noodler's Black. The Black BTW, if used on drawing paper for pens WILL be mostly waterproof when its thoroughly dry. I do prefer D'Arches BLack Document ink, which is totally waterproof for artists. I'll try that next but am positive it will be the dip pen KILLER. THANKS.

    Thanks for the great idea, Stephen. I put a Brause Rosefedern 76 on a Noodlers Ahab. You need to set the ebonite feed with a hot air gun so it sits flat against the nib, but once you do this, it works fantastic, great wet ink flow, super line width contrast.

    Hey, do you preclean your G nib as you do when using it as a dip nib? I never see anyone clean it?
    Never knew the Jinhao could be done with modifying the nib. Thanks for that. :)
    Great penmanship. I work with dip pens a lot. Slowing down resolves the railroading.
    That third one is a eureka. Shorter nib yields an incredible variant line thickness. Thanks for sharing.

    One little tip. In every video I've ever seen, people always fit the nib onto the feed and then ram the whole thing into the section. My experience: doing that makes it really hard to DO. Easier, and totally works: get the feed in there first, which is a cinch, and THEN push the nib in. I know what you're thinking, but try it: it's fine.
    • • •
    OK now for Franken-concept. Throw a *Kaweco* feed into a Jinhao 750. It fits, but it's clearly too small. Don't worry about it. Now run a Noodler's medium nib in there (They're $3 at Goulet). What happens is: You can't just pick up the pen and write with it. Every time you use it, you have to hold the pen, nib down, and wait. Maybe even goose the converter, to get the thing flowing. But then you're in for a treat, if you're into this kind of thing. CRAZY-wet nib. Like, it's just a fire hose. In fact, look what you're doing or it'll burp ink right onto the table.
    If the above sounds like a great way to make a mess, OK, yes, it is. At first. But then you get the hang of it, and it's just a super fun tool. I use Monteverde Brown Sugar ink in mine, and I'm always thinking "C'mon, put a proper feed in there" but then I play with the thing for a minute and I'm like "Uh-uh, I'm keeping it just like this."

    Thanks for the ideas and demos! I made a couple of frankenpens by adding Zebra G’s to Jinhao 750s. Using bottled fountain-pen ink (like Noodlers Lexington Gray), they write beautifully for a word or two. Then I have to screw the ink piston down to push more ink down to the nib to write another word or two.
    Could you offer some recommendations to improve the ink flow? And ideas for the ink you like to use in your Frankenpens? Thank You!

    • @AlexiLaiho227
      @AlexiLaiho227 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      so if you want more ink to come out, you need to push the nib in further (and make sure the channel on the feed is aligned with the breather hole!)

      you can carve out the ink channel with an xacto knife, i wouldn't recommend doing this unless you have a spare feed!
      luckily, there are listings on ebay for spare jinhao feeds, there was one where like a 10 pack was $3-5, (make sure to check the pictures/dimensions, the diameter is 6mm for the x-450/750)
      i bought a 10 pack. once they arrived, i started experimenting with digging out a deeper channel. if the channel is deeper, it should delay the amount of time until you get railroading, because more ink is being held right at the ready, but be warned that there is still a bottleneck in the vent/channel holes going to the converter, so you can't write very fast, broad lines indefinitely without hitting a railroad, but it basically refills itself while you're not writing.
      think of it like giving your pen a bigger stamina bar.

    • @TheCalculatorGuy
      @TheCalculatorGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Ahab is meant for the Ahab flex nib so the feed is built to feed quite a bit more ink (making it ideal for converting into a frankenpen).

    Buen video. Se puede observar que tiene usted practica en caligrafía . Podría usted darnos algunos tips.... Una recomendación. Para insertar el nib en la Jinhao 750, es mejor aplanar el nib con unos alicates y ampliar un poco el canal de flujo de tinta del feed. Eso evitará los fallos al escribir. • @hunterjohnson8200
      @hunterjohnson8200 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ahab's feed is made for flexing so you will get a stronger flow of ink out if the ahab. The x750 is a regular feed so the ink flow wont be able to keep up with the nib as well as the ahab's will. Ahab comes with a flex nib also that works well so I dont see any need for putting a zebra nib on it, but different strokes for different folks

    • @TheCalculatorGuy
      @TheCalculatorGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You're right, the Ahab is meant for a bit of flex, so the feed is made accordingly. I still deepen the feed with a razor, but that's because I tend to write a bit slower than your average calligraphy.

    Having all that gorgeous script in the background is giving your camera focusing problems. You have a ton of sharp, black-and-white contrast in the background.
    Then, you expect the camera to pick-out the nib-and-feed... and focus on that. It can't do it.
    Try a less contrast-y background, if you expect your camera to know what to focus on.
    (Not trying to be critical. Trying to help.) Thank you for this excellent video.

    Putting a different nib on a pen does NOT make it a Frankenpen. If it did, there would probably be ten times as many Frankenpens as non-Frankenpens in the world. All you're doing is changing nibs, and any child who has used fountain pens for a month can do that.
    A Frankenpen is when a pen has the wrong barrel and cap combination, or the wrong feed for the pen, or even the wrong nib unit.
    All changing the nib does is make it a pen with a new nib.
