I have nothing but the sincerest respect for the great Hicham El Guerrouj, but watching Morceli run-especially when he would take off for that final lap-is what made me appreciate this particular race and distance. When Morceli started to motor around 450 meters out, you knew the field was toast. It defies logic. Anyone else going that hard that far from the finish, you’d think they wouldn’t have the endurance and the speed to maintain that. Morceli is special

Not a chance. He could wind the pace up better than anyone but he certainly didn't have the kick that an Ovett or a Coe did. Nowhere near!!! A "KICK" is a sudden change of pace normally reserved for the last 100, 150 of a race. Morceli ran more like an El Guerrrouj who would wind up the pace from 400/600 metres and try and nullify the kick of his opponent like Cacho.

What that did was take away the "kick" that his opponents may have had. It seems like you do NOT understand the difference! A "KICK" is an instant change of pace that is electrifying. The best that I can think of who could do that was Ovett and Coe. There may be others who could do that but they don't spring to mind atm. Maybe Yifter the shifter and there was an Irish athlete in the 1980's called Eamonn Coughlan who had a great kick.

@@salahboulemden9259 Traditionally when commentators talk about a "KICK" it's when an athlete delivers a kick that takes him/her away from the field in an instant, NOT consistently over a longer period of time. So Morceli may kick with 300, 400 or 500 to go but it takes him away from the field "GRADUALLY" over metres and metres, NOT as Coe/Ovett did when they destroyed a field in a matter of seconds. You may change the understanding in athletics for a "KICK" but that doesn't mean you are right. Sorry 👍
An impressive 6th by Yates. Britain had a fair few 1500m in a post coe/ovett/cram/elliot world and a pre jake whiteman world who made a mark briefly....during the big 4 era ( plus Tom McKean) i suppose we thought it woupd never end...who knew it would be 30 years before a new trio of brits emerged at 800/1500
dude 25 years on and nobody can match that kind of long closing speed in a race like that. To put it in perspective Centrowitz won in Rio with a 50.8 last lap - except the finishing time was 15.5 seconds slower........ wow.

El Guerrouj uses the exact same style, starts stretching out the field in lap 3 with a sub 55 second lap then extends the margin to the finish line

Last lap in 50.6 sec. This was really strong. It is a pace, that is run in good 800 meter races. Even Mo Farah would not be able to follow.
Mo was a 500om and 10k runner, not a 1500m runner. But Mo wasn't fast.
