      this show is so good because there is always consequences for every little action and they are not ignored. also realistic reactions to those consequences that don't make you feel like the characters are just acting but really living the struggle of their actions and not knowing how to fix them.

    Powder knows just enough about gadgetry and explosives to be a massive danger to herself and to others. Add in how young she is (how young all of them are) and how Powder already had trauma and mental problems even before all this happened, and you have a recipe for disaster.
    I don't blame Powder for wanting to help, to try and prove herself. And I don't blame Vi for losing control and striking her. I understand where both sides are coming from, which is what makes this all the more tragic.

    • @monster-enthusiast
      @monster-enthusiast 3 ปีที่แล้ว +252

      And powder was probably already feeling like Vi gave up on her before she "left." Vi told her she was ready for the missions but she messed it all up. And then she overheard Vi's convo with Mylo and didn't hear the end. So she probably thougt all 3 of them thought she was incapable. And then on the most important mission Vi tells her to stay put. She probably thought she didn't have any faith in her anymore. Vi calling her a Jinx, validating her fears, and walking off was just the final straw.

    • @Shax22132
      @Shax22132 3 ปีที่แล้ว +174

      @@monster-enthusiast Indeed. And Powder has legitimate skill and talent with gadgetry and explosives. With time, training, and practice, she could be incredible.
      But Vi and the rest of their little gang/family literally cannot give those things to her; almost every day is a struggle just to survive, and Powder is essentially dead weight that they probably would have already left behind if not for her being Vi's sister.
      We've also seen how Powder appears to have an almost pathological need to be need and accepted. Let's not forget: she's a young child, probably six or seven years old, who has already been deeply traumatized by the deaths of her parents and the violence of the world around her. She didn't go to the mission to rescue Vander as some part of revenge ploy against the 'mean kids.' Powder legitimately wanted to help and show them that she could be useful.
      And after the audience and the characters in universe repeatedly told her to make her bombs work...Powder made them work.
      Be careful what you wish for...

      Ya, the proper way to see the situation is that each person's response was human. There were many points up until the explosion where everyone was on the verge of dying. Only until the metal door was closed and the monster was moments away from getting through did Powder pull her stunt. In her mind everyone was dead if it got through. It just so happened she made everything way worse. Her actions made sense for a kid and Vi's reaction was completely understandable

    Roshi in the right when it comes to Powder and her character. Girl just wanted to try and help. Imagine if it was a story where that WORKED. That's what we're used to. When they finally get to have their "moment".This, unfortunately, is the story where the plucky girl who likes to make things fucks everything up and gets harmed and abandoned by the only family she had left. Obviously, Powder fucked up huge and that'll be something she lives with forever. I think our own personal guilts and the trauma done to us through our own mistakes is punishment enough sometimes.

    • @Orapac4142
      @Orapac4142 3 ปีที่แล้ว +97

      Let's also not forget she was just the plucky girl, she was the already semi sheltered damaged girl. She saw her parents laying dead after a riot (and may have seen the violence first hand), grew up in the absolute worst part of society what with all the violence, crime, danger, etc in the undercity, having Vi protect her from as much responsibility as she could. Let's also remember when she was chased her attempt at getting away was to try and make a NAIL bomb.
      She wasn't well in the head before this. The feeling of being a useless fuck up, then thinking you have a way to ACTUALLY help, THEN have those feelings destroyed and replaced with a validation of the feeling like a fuck up because now you just caused the deaths of your friends and family, be hit by the last person you have left and think they abandoned you? She got fucked right up.
      That and she didn't know who Silco was either. If she wasn't having that breakdown she would have figured out who he was, also probably would have gotten stabbed I bet.

    It’s interesting seeing people’s reactions to what Powder did. A lot of people react like Vi; angry at her and blaming her for not following instructions. In the moment it can be hard to remember that Powder is a child who has serious abandonment issues and trauma even before this event and it informs so much of what she does. She wants to be loved and included and useful. She was excited to help and prove herself and had no way of knowing that everyone was about to escape. In her eyes Decker was about to slaughter her family, of course she would do everything in her power to try to save them. Idk. I think it’s easy to just be angry at Powder and on some level it is justified since it is her fault, but the situation is way more nuanced and complicated than “Powder killed her whole family so fuck her”.

    • @seanpierce4566
      @seanpierce4566 3 ปีที่แล้ว +123

      The community also exists on the flip side of that coin, crucifying Vi for releasing anger - especially for slapping powder - even though her entire family structure was just killed in front of her. And this is after she knew that it was her fault Vander was kidnapped in the first place and her fault for arranging the theft that started this whole thing. Vi, for still being a child, was shouldering so much only to be faced with this tragedy. And then she found out her own sister did it. OF COURSE someone her age with anger issues would lash out. Tell me to my face anyone in these comments hasn't lashed out at their family members for less. And, no, she did not abandon Powder (but it's understandable that Powder assumed so) - she did exactly what she should have, which was distance herself from the situation to calm down and regain control of her emotions. And she had the sense to do this while still struggling with the overwhelming sadness and hopelessness that she was surely feeling in the moment. It's just a bad situation that the location wasn't safe and that villains were still nearby.
      Ultimately, sides shouldn't be taken - neither Powder nor Vi should have to shoulder the blame for this tragedy, as it was a chain of events alongside dozens of peoples' choices, mistakes, assumptions, and machinations that led to this. And yet both of these children have to live with it. We don't. So people shouldn't be trying to blame one of them; we should be trying to empathize with them to understand why and how this event shapes the next 5-10 years of their lives.

Our family is in danger, trapped in a room with a monster trying to break down the door and we can’t see or hear what they’re doing on the other side. All we know is that magic rocks go boom and boom destroys things, so maybe it can blow up the monster. Also Powder is a kid and as a kid we usually don’t consider consequences until after the actions themselves. So in Powder’s mind(the mind of a child) she probably doesn’t stop to consider that the bomb could blast through the door as well as the monster, and even if she did, like I stated earlier she doesn’t know what’s happening on the other side so she could easily figure that the bombs are better than nothing as I think most of us would.

      I do question why she used all of them. She realizes that the giant explosion that almost killed her and her siblings was caused by those rocks and she took most of them. She is still very young and desperate for her family, but why all of them?

      My point is the Vi was right, she wasn't ready and she should've listened. Especially when Vi took her on the missions before even when noone else wanted her to come. Vi thought she could handle those missions, even when she couldn't. But this mission specifically she said no on, and Powder should've listened to that.

      @@Doritochi Dude she's just a child stop treating her like she can contemplate shit that she can't at her age. Powder did nothing wrong (with context included). Even the creators of the show set this up. Look at Ep. 1 dialogue between Vander and Vi foreshadowing the situation. He explains to Vi how as a leader, people will try to help her no matter what and that what happens is her fault - although I don't blame Vi either, point is it's grey and saying Powder shouldn't have used the bomb is ignoring key elements of her character such as her age and ambition to do good after all her failures plus her ambition to save her leader/sister figure Vi.
      Also Vi isn't right in saying that she "wasn't ready" because the whole reason they included that dialogue was to contrast with Vi's quote from the start of Episode 1 when Jinx isn't prepared to make the jump from one rooftop to another when Vi says to her "remember what I told you, you're ready for this" (paraphrased) so if you can't see this you need to rewatch first 3 eps or you didn't understand the show. Vi told her sister that, despite what Mylo thinks, she is ready so of course Powder just wanted to prove herself.
      (SPOILERS)
      ....
      ...
      ...
      Even later in Episode 5 or 6 when Vi is with Caitlyn she acknowledges her mistake in leaving Powder behind when she is fading out from her injury. At the end of the day, Vi can't be blamed either for reacting the way she did because she was also young and inexperienced as a leader and she saw people she cared about die as a result of Powders actions but to say that the defense people have for Powders use of the Hex Explosion "is the exact reason why she shouldn't have used it" is just straight up wrong. The show itself is sympathetic to Powder and even if you ignore that and approach it purely from a logical perspective factoring in Powder's age and goals it is clear that it isn't her fault (or her fault alone, depending on how you look at it). Cmon man don't argue for the sake of arguing. Vi was NOT right. Nobody was. There was no such thing as "Right" in that situation.

Coming from someone whose sister was diagnosed with manic schizophrenia around 16 years ago, basically observed how she went about her delusions and mood swings at the age of 12. Like yeah, she wouldn't listen to my parents and would do shit or run away all the time, and we would get mad. But at the end of the day we couldn't completely be THAT mad at her because we knew mentally she just wasn't there and was going to just keep on doing the same stuff. I'm glad you guys made note of VI going back to save Powder right away. It's refreshing because my favorite part of that final scene that nobody else seems to be talking about is how VI got space, but didn't leave or walk away completely. She just needed to gather herself for a bit. Immediately as she saw Silco standing over Powder, she was already running to her rescue. SO. MANY. SHOWS. do the opposite of this when a traumatic moment happens between two protagonists. They show the one protagonist shun the other protagonist until that protagonist either becomes a villain or gets kidnapped or whatever. Then once that moment happens, the first protagonist "has an epiphany" and realizes how much they cared about the other protagonist all along and goes to save them. It's such fucking bullshit writing and happens all of the time. I hate that trope. It makes that first protagonist come off as a bit of an asshole even when finally doing the right thing. This is like the exact opposite of that trope. It makes Vi that much more endearing to me. She never stopped being the best sister she could be, even in her biggest moment of weakness. And it makes complete sense for Powder/Jinx to think Vi completely abandoned her in that moment. It's so good and so well done both ways. One of the rare times something like this has made complete and total sense from both opposite view points. I just want to say BRAVO to the writing team for Arcane, you fucking nailed this better than 99% of shows do, and you did it all in 2 hours.
    Instead of having Vi get space without actually leaving the scene, most shows would have shown Vi continue walking away without looking back to really "sell the moment". Then Silco would take Powder because Vi wasn't actually there to save her. And this episode would have been lesser for it considering how much these first 3 episodes really tried to paint and capture just how much Vi loves, adores, and wants to protect and make the world a better place for her sister. I love that even in her darkest hour, she stayed in that same area and didn't abandon Powder, even if Powder believes she did because of Marcus capturing her. And I love that she tried to run back and save Powder as soon as she saw Silco standing over her. No hesitation whatsoever. Vi is literally best big sister. I love her. And if she had walked away here like 99% of shows would have had her do, I'd be singing an entirely different tune about her. It really goes to show how one little choice (story wise, stylistic wise, or otherwise) can make all the difference in how someone views something. This episode is incredible; one of the best I've ever seen. And it's mainly because of one choice that holds it all together in the end for me.

      Yeah I haven't watched this show and have only seen clips of this episode. And the first clip I saw was Vi lashing out at Powder and I immediately thought she should get some space to go calm down before facing her sister again. Cause when I saw her realization of what Powder did my heart just sank and felt so many emotions as if I was her and with that much pain and shock I doubt she's gonna completely be stable and act calm at what her sister has done. So it was quite baffling when I saw some comments on tiktok hating her for getting some space and realistically lashing out.

      Thank you for having empathy for Vi and actually understanding her! I've seen too many people hate on her as if she intended to ditch Powder. Even though my favourite characters are Silco and Jinx, I always defend Vi from hate - she reacted as realistically and understandably as possible. And I applaud her for immediately trying to RUN back to Powder when she noticed Silco. She is a great sister.

    Of course Powder changed her mind about Vi so quickly. She's a child and even though she still screwed up majorly, she didn't expect Vi to ABANDON her when she needed her most. And Silco took her in when she was at her most broken after it had been drilled into her by everyone except for Vander that she is a Jinx. Silco took pity on her because he saw himself and Vander in Powder and Vi. And Powder accepted it because that was the only time she ever felt needed. Children change their mind very quickly when neglected or mistreated. When a child messes up they need someone to tell them it's okay or to make their mistake know but still stay with them. She was also having a mental breakdown and most likely didn't even realized that Silco was the one who killed Vander. The psychology of Powder actually makes a lot of sense.

    I love the design of Claggor and Mylo so much. Even though they were temporary characters, the artists gave them such definitive and unique features. Mylo's angular face, wild hair and huge eyebrows... Claggor's round features, goggles and stature. It subconsciously makes the viewer think that they'll grow up to BE something in this world of magic and super-powered heroics. You can't help but see their individual skills and envision the type of hero they could grow up to be. Mylo the rogue, Claggor the tank. And when they are killed, you mourn for their lost potential, genius character design!

    Powder, Vi, Vander did absolute most that they could with what they could do. The issue is that EVERYBODY screwed up.
    - Vi decided to rob a place she was told NOT to.
    - Vi also TOLD Powder to hide the stones from Vander.
    - Powder wandered away and found the stones.
    - Vander kept trying to uphold a status quo that already fell apart the moment Vi robbed that place and refused to compromise even if it meant dooming his whole community.
    - Vi After spending whole end of Episode One telling Powder she's ready, STILL decided to cut her out of Vander rescue plan this episode.
    - Since literally entire squad was pushing Powder to man up and be useful, that's exactly what she ended up trying to do alone. Because it worked out exactly the way a little kid trying to do stuff like this alone would have turned out.
    Had Vi not robbed the place they'd all be fine.
    Had Vi told Vander about the stones, they'd all be fine.
    Had Vander just thrown a random person under the bus for the sake of the many rather than clinging to his newfound morality and dooming his community, they'd all be fine.
    Had Vi let Powder come on the rescue mission, they'd all be fine.
    And so on. And so on.
    With each important character making wrong decisions, this is pretty much all that each of them could have done.

Hence she was careless, dropped basically a live grenade on the ground and _that_ raised the tension between Piltover and the Undercity. Love how everyone wants the bomb to work, but when it did, everyone went “Wtf Powder”

    This is what pushed Powders fears of loss over the edge into madness. You can see that she was abandoned once again, not being good enough, which is why she started destroying her creations in the room. After losing her parents Vi was all she had and she was like a mother to her. But after figuring out a solution to help them she wanted to show she's not weak and is needed, she wanted to save the people important to her and went nuts ofc when she saw what happened. (You can see this when she screams at Vi "Why did you leave me". Theres so much pain in her voice). Vi literally just went around the corner to calm down but got dragged away. Powder on the other hand was abandoned once again, she was not good enough, she's a Jinx and fucked up. So she seeked comfort in the next best person available which was Silco.
    So who can really blame her for her fucked up life. Both girls are broken to the core.

    Damn, editor is great. That comparison of Powder's expression to "Fallen Angel" is on point!

    Ok Lupa, let's act like it isn't Vi's fault for not telling her kid sister to throw the only things away that coud tie them to the collapsed building on Topside.

    Dude on the right really salty at a little girl for no reason she did make a big mistake but violet shouldn’t have slapped her it’s understandable to be mad because she did kill them but bro no reason to call powder trash she was just trying to help I think it’s all about intentions smh dude makes me cringe

      You sound like a cry baby tbvh. Violet hitting Powder technically wrong but I completely understand her. Plus it's not like Vi was gonna abandon her. She literally was going back to her. She just got snatched up. Unfortunate series of events.
      Doesn't change the fact that what Powder did was indeed straight GARBAGE. Trash even.
