  • Make a hand lifecast using alginate as the molding material and plaster of Paris as the casting agent.
    This video shows mixing up the alginate to create a mold for a real life hand which is then casted using plaster of Paris. The plaster of Paris is poured into the alginate mold to create a realistic and life-like hand cast.

      Dramamask Evolution and we add hot r cold water for alginate n plaster of paris

    • @dramamask
      @dramamask  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mix cold water with the alginate. When you buy the alginate, you should receive instructions, but it is pretty straightforward. With the plaster of Paris, I used to use warm water to speed up the curing process, but I mainly use cold water with the plaster of Paris, to have a regular curing process.

    Hi I want to do this but also want it in stone/ concrete. Can I pour concrete into the alginate mould. Ultimately I would like to make concrete garden ornaments so I am trying to do replicas of ornaments I already have.

    • @dramamask
      @dramamask  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the most efficient way to do what you want, is to make a plaster of Paris cast with the alginate mold and then make a latex mold from the plaster cast. When you have made your latex mold from the plaster cast, you can replicate using concrete poured into the latex mold. It probably wouldn't be very beneficial to pour concrete into the alginate mold. I hope this helps. :) I'll put up a latexing video in relation to these casts shortly. :)

      I have just started making latex mold for the hand cast items, so video should be up over the next couple of weeks. Takes a bit of time making latex molds, but have a few videos which have latexing in them already. Here's one video which shows the latex molding process and is for a planter. Pretty much the same principles will apply to making the hand cast molds: th-cam.com/video/oQrvrvqyJ70/w-d-xo.html

    Was looking for a video like this to see if the heat produced by the setting plaster of Paris would have any negative effects on the alginate molding detail but apparently it doesn’t which is great. Thanks!

    • @dramamask
      @dramamask  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hand in video too small to generate too much heat from the plaster, but as most of us know, you want to respect the plaster of Paris as bigger items will certainly generate some dangerous heat. I’ve read some horror stories regarding that.

  • @TheHappyNisha

    Thanks for the video on making a hand. Really helpful. Strange question now, but would it work if I poured wet red earth clay into the bowl of set alginate? (I'm looking at making my hands into a sculpture only I'd like them to be of a natural material and not of plaster of paris or concrete). Any thoughts on how I might do this Sir? (It's for healing/therapy which is why natural is best). Thanks.

    • @dramamask
      @dramamask  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, I don't know. I guess if the clay can be poured with no air getting trapped then you would be ok. The trouble with alginate, is that you can only use it once to make a cast as it degrades quite quickly. The alternative might be to make a mold of the plaster cast and experiment with that.

    Would it be hard to make a skin colored silicone hand?

    • @dramamask
      @dramamask  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not tried this, as of yet, but would think you would need to make a fresh mold from the plaster cast made from the alginate. I'm not sure if you can pour the silicone straight into the alginate, as you don't have much time to work with the aginate in relation to the curing time of silicone. Of course, plaster of Paris sets relatively quickly and before the alginate starts to detoriorate.

    • @DoctorAlginate
      @DoctorAlginate 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dramamask You can pour silicone directly into an alginate mold but it needs to be Platinum catalyzed silicone, not Tin catalyzed stuff. The problem with "skin color" is that there really isn't such a thing. Look at your hand and you will see many, many different shades of color in different places. Veins, lines in the palm, knuckles are all different colors than the dominant skin color. Solid "Pink" hands just look creepy

    In some vedios they would have hardly have 2 mins of time for mixing and taking the impression before alglinate sets.

    Alginate and dental plaster the same thing?

    • @dramamask
      @dramamask  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm in the UK, so alginate and dental plaster are two different things. The alginate is to make the mold and the dental plaster is probably what is used to make the cast from the mold. I do have some dental stone plaster here, which I will make some casts and will put a video up soon. Usually, I would use Plaster of Paris to make the model and remold the plaster of Paris to make further concrete replicas, if that makes any sense. :)
