  • Hello everyone and welcome to the FINAL episode of this blind playthrough of Tunic! This one is an extra long episode (I think my longest video?), as I tried my best to condense my last 6 hours of gameplay into one Finale all about the SECRETS! Secrets, secrets, and more secrets! This game has soooo many, and some of them very hard to solve! How many will I manage to figure out? Find out!

This is my headcanon for Tunic:
The game has metacommentary as part of its in-world canon. There are several places hinting that the game world itself is in fact a video game, with the lines between main character and player being blurred. The player is the character and the character is the player; ie, Tunic the Fox is also you the player.
The game manual has clearly been owned before by someone who loved the game; whoever it was clearly spent a LOT of time and energy on it when they were younger, to the point where they even went to the trouble of translating the language. That takes a lot of dedication. I think the owner of the manual was The Heir, who had outgrown the game and had given it (and the manual) to their child or sibling, eventually forgetting about it after it had been part of their life for so long, as adulthood is busy, and childish things are put aside. So now, you are The Heir to The Heir, the child/sibling of the older fox, and you have now spent lots of time and effort of your own on a game that you love now, too, since you took the time to decode so many secrets so you could finish the game.
You giving the completed manual to The Heir represents you passing them back the game they loved so much when they were younger, reminding them of all the hours they spent in loving obsession with it. That's why The Heir cried upon the reminder of their beloved younger years.
Tunic really is a love letter to the games of one's childhood. Mario Bros and Legend of Zelda and all the other 8-bit and 16-bit games that so many adults played as kids, and every part of the game hearkens back to that nostalgia, even the ending.
    I love this game.

I love the growing paranoia this game brings as you realise the puzzles were literally EVERYWHERE from the very begining.
Loved your playthough, congrats on all the secret hunting, you got a lot of it WAY faster than I did.
Admittedly I spent a LOT of time trying (And at least partially succeding!) to decypher the languages, but turns out that really isn't neccecary for lke 99% of it.

You did really well on the Golden Path and those secrets! I translated the last treasure puzzle but I didn't understand it either and had to look it up. It's sort of an English language pun. "Down" is a type of soft feather, "right" is another word for "correct", and "left" is another word for "departed". As for translating the runes, it is possible to work it out long before you get the page explaining it. I love that stuff so I was working on it immediately. The pages, in the order they are found, have enough clues on them to work out many words from context. I probably had 100 words before I understood how the phonetic alphabet worked. At that point, I had enough words to find all the phonemes that make them up. It wasn't much longer before I could read the text by eye. That and the Golden Path are two of the most satisfying puzzles I've ever solved.

This was a really wonderful playthrough to watch! Thank you for sharing it with us. Since you were asking, we both figured out the same amount of stuff without assistance (everything but the language and the final treasure with the confusing encoding). The Golden Path puzzle was probably the most satisfying puzzle solve I've had in a game. Entering a 100 keypress code without messing up with no indication you have any of it right is hard!

Fantastic playthrough! This has been so much fun to watch. I definitely didn't get nearly as many of the treasures as you did.
    Secrets spoilers ahead:
For folks interested in how deep the hidden-stuff rabbit hole goes, check out "The 'TUNIC' Audio Talk" on the GDC TH-cam channel. It's from Kevin Regamey, the audio director of the game. At 38:30 he starts to talk about the sound and musical secret language of Tunic and how it can be discovered / how it's constructed. Or, if you just want to hear and see some of the hidden messages, start at 43:35.
For example, the fanfare that plays when you successfully input the Golden Path code and open the door says "Share your wisdom", and the fairy seeking spell says "This way this way fox friend this way!". It's even more subtle, with the soundtrack including messages as well, like the words "under earth" being hidden in the music played under the well as one example. Pretty clever stuff!

I made a mistake on one page of my door pattern and ended up having to check online to see what i had done wrong.
Its amazing how much things open and how many patterns you see when you figure out the golden cross. The only other game that made me so obsessive about hunting out shapes in the wilderness was the Witness (which i also highly recommend if you like puzzles and havent played it).
Anyway props again for getting that done.

I know it's been a while since you finished Tunic, but I would love to see a follow up video where you read and react to the translated manual. There's a lot of interesting and cryptic information hidden in the text. It doesn't explain everything... not by a long shot. But it does explain more and it shouldn't take long to read. If you've already read the book, that's ok, this is a final step that very few people take but because you went to the effort to look up the cipher and translated a few bits, I thought I'd ask.

Damn good puzzling man. I only found maybe half the trophies. I managed to find all the fairies myself (took forever) the golden path I needed a tiny little clue about where to look, though afterwards I felt like I already knew that but it confirmed what I was looking for and allowed me to look harder. There was one page I couldn't figure out, the controller directions one that stumped you for a while.
Also, for some reason, I couldn't figure out I needed to do the code at the mountain door.
As long as the puzzles took me, beating the heir took me longer. That was a super hard fight for me. It took probably as many hours for me as it did tries for you!
      Good job man

  • @Ceres603
    @Ceres603 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

You did a damn good job! Really glad that you decided to defeat the heir before getting the true ending since it makes the end credits more impactful.
I agree with you about it being better when everything is contained in the main game, the last secret, though "optional," was so convoluted and figuring it out wasn't very rewarding, at least in my opinion. It's super cool that the lore and mysteries of the game run so deep, but it seemed to stray too far from the main plot points without giving concrete answers to some of our questions. It also wasn't very clear to the player that the secret treasures were unnecessary for achieving the true ending, so it's natural to expect more from collecting them.
Nonetheless, it's an amazing game and I had a great time watching your journey!

    @IlluminatiBG 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

To get the final treasure you must understand (old) English, so likely you need to be a native English speaker. I get the second and the third pun, but not the first:
"Softest feather" is somehow related to "fall", thus down. To depart is to leave, so in past tense, departed means "left". To correct something is to make it "right".
The language can be translated - it is English, using phoneme syllables. The outer shape are vowels, the inner shape is consonant, they are combined. You have two "clear" examples: fo-k-s and s(w)-or-d. However w in sword is silent and "or" form different sound ("ɔː" in IPA) than "o" ("ɒ" in IPA). For every syllable the consonant goes first, but this can be swapped (the clue about the circle underneath). Finally, every time you enter a new area (like "The East Forest") the name is shown in both languages. This is all you need to get most of the phonemes.
Translating the language is not canon, and it is mostly useless. Like when you first found the stick it just says "found a stick". You can translate a few clues more, but the background story is a bit vague and you are supposed to get it from the game itself and the bits in English, rather than relying on the whole translation. For that you need a few clues:
    1. When you "save" on a shrine, only the living beings are restored - any bridges you put down or doors you open remains.
    2. The first page you found mentions "the power to defy death".
    3. The first time you die, you awake as ghost in the world where the heir is imprisoned. Once you visit him, he revives you. It is assumed this happens every time you die, but for the sanity of the player, this is not repeated.
    4. It is clear that the heir (the one that revives you and have the power to defy death) is imprisoned.
    5. The boss of the scavenger in the ziggurat clearly industrialized the process of that power (to defy death) and even used that power for devices. Although not mentioned in the book, it is clear those are like previous heirs.
    6. The first time you reach the temple doors (before you ring the bells) you are transported to the heir and they give you the clue for the East and the West bells. Once you return from that clue and visit the door again it says "sealed forever" implying the fate of whoever is the heir (and that will be your fate in ending A).
    7. You need powers from outside of the fox world - that is the completed booklet, which requires the holy cross (which does not exists in the fox world, since it is on your joystick/keyboard), the golden path (which is in the booklet), except for page 9
The only clue you can get using translation, you can get a few more secrets, but nothing actually important:
    1. The trophy room - this looks more like an easter egg rather than something related to the story and it is not worth the effort. You need to find at least 6 out of 12 trophies to enter the special area. Then you need to "unsing the golden path from within" - that is to do the golden path sequence in reverse order, then you get a domain name for a website outside of the game. The website is just an empty page playing some cool graphic and ominous music. There might or might not be a secret message encoded in the frequency of the music. You better look this up, it is quite convoluted nothing.
    2. Some pages in the booklet talk about the "MP" (mana points?) is actually materialized souls you can use to cast spells thus it is evil to use MP. Also note that praying to activate obelisks gives you mana, the same as killing a creature, signifying the fate of the creature imprisoned inside.
    3. There is hidden secret (easter egg) in the special save for the golden path. In a normal save, opening the booklet shows an old CRT screen pattern behind the booklet, but not in the special save file. If you die in that save file you are respawned in the "beta" version of the game where you can obtain the CRT screen pattern behind the booklet. You can die by setting yourself on fire, use the holy cross pattern to obtain firebomb and do not roll.
None of this secrets are affecting the ending.

There's a type of feather called a down feather that's really soft (it's what they stuff soft pillows with) - that's the connection, it's not related to "fall". definitely relies heavily on english vocabulary knowledge/wordplay.

Congrats on finishing the game! Isn't it beautiful!?
My deepest respect for your perseverance, not giving up on even the hardest puzzles (looking at you, wind chimes!). Personally, I had to look up one page for the golden path, but then I did the whole thing correct in the very first try, and, man, hearing that "success" chime at the end of it and seeing the door opening - maybe the most satisfied I've ever felt in a videogame. I was riding that high for the rest of the day.
Kinda the same feeling, but in reverse, when it finally hit what the "Holy Cross" is. Just sitting there, going "... Come on, really? ... I feel so stupid." :D
I also kinda looked up the wind chimes. It's not going to help you anymore, but in the Accessibility options there's "Audio Puzzle Assistance", which I found by just looking through the options at some point and just turned it on, because why not. Turns out that helps with exactly that puzzle. There is also "Auto-Open Sequence Assistance" which is extremely helpful when putting in codes. That are, say, 100 inputs long. Never used it, but found it by watching another playthrough.
Never beat the heir myself, she wiped the floor with me once and I decided to never go back (until the booklet told me so). So props to beating her. She looked wicked difficult!
I also thought about translating the language, but as my first language isn't English, too, and I also learned that it's done phonetically, I decided as well that it would just be too difficult.
Always love to see the crazy notes people take while playing the game. I had like four pages with just random arrow directions and weird drawings and it felt like that crazy drawing board meme, but I swear they all made sense to me! :D
Lastly, there's an interesting little room I think you missed just right from the fountain hidden behind a few trees, the one near your house, where there was a page in the middle of it. If you ever want to go back to it for a bit.
Very cool playthrough, loved it a lot. Again, props to you for sticking with almost all of the puzzles and not giving up, I mean, almost 7h of footage? Well done, truly!

    • @LukaelPlays
      @LukaelPlays  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think I left out a few attempts I did at the Golden Door where I must have had one or two inputs wrong, so the satisfaction when I actually got it all right was so nice!
I feel like I went through the settings but I never saw that Audio Puzzle thing, it would have kind of tipped me off if I did!
Heir is pretty challenging, but after going through Elden Ring it's nothing I can't handle! 😄
I had around four pages full of little notes too!
I've been told in another comment about the room where you can change your look, it's really cool the option exists but man they sure didn't make it easy to find, seems like very few people did

I did about as much as you in my playthrough. I had to look up the page 1 secret, the cathedral secret (never found those buttons,) and the character customizer room that I found as a ghost and thought was a puzzle. I didn't try to translate the manual at all or do the arg stuff, that's just a little too tedious for me.
The arg stuff was the only real problem I had with this game. Finding all the faries and solving the golden path was such a great build up to the end, but during the true ending I was still thinking about all the potential lore hidden in the game. I still hadn't learned much about the Rooted Ziggurat, and the purple foxes, and what the power to defy death really is. I had so many questions, and knowing the language could be translated and having at least one big puzzle unsolved in the secret trophy room area made me think they might be answered. The arg stuff doesn't really lead to any important lore though. Instead of having a definitive ending after giving the heir the manual the ending kind of just fizzled out for me. I think if I didn't see the trophy room secret I wouldn't have had this problem, I might have been able to see the ending as an actual ending and enjoyed it more.
Other than the ending I really enjoyed this game so much! The golden path especially is one of the coolest puzzles I've seen in a game. It was really fun to see you experience this awesome game too.

I have to kinda agree with you lol like you said, the fairies and treasures and the golden path is such a great buildup, and I felt like I was about to unlock something huge right at the end, but there's basically nothing lol I thought we'd get like one true final area, or a true final boss, or something like that, to reward the player's efforts. Ended up being a bit anticlimactic, but I still enjoyed the game overall!

Oh that music thing was genius to have the ear for. I agreed that it had to be something, since the chimes were painted gold. But distinguishing the notes is tough!
Hmm, you saying "outside of the word, and these inside of a word" gave me some ideas. Have it paused seeing if I can figure it out. Especially if is not a sword, but means dagger or attack? What sounds in sword, dagger, or attack combines to make an fff or ksss sound? Maybe only ssss? But must also have a common vowel. "Ah" in fox is not in sword, dagger, or attack. No, it has to be consonant attaches to first vowel sound. No, 10 minutes and my brain gave up.
Some of this stuff, like the flowers on the ground. I can see there is a pattern, but I have no idea how that is reflected in directional controls for you to know what buttons to press.
You manipulating the golden cube reminds me of my 44 year old vinyl record player. The buttons on it are wearing out, so it is very tricky trying to get the speed just right for the record to play properly. I know I can repair the electronics, but for now, while it does still function, I enjoy the oddity of it.
30 min left in the vid. I think I know where you need to go, the Atoll. Let's see.
OMG that mountain door code is just ridiculous
And that softest feather 11 times riddle makes no sense to me at all. A soft feather would be "down" but how is "corrected" right? and... oh I got it. Departed left, once more than 11. That was tricky haha.
    Good job editing it down.
Wonder if you are gonna experiment with the 3 episode thing next. :o

Making our cipher and finally reading all of the manual was one of my favorite things about the game 😂 It was made easier because when I figured out it was based on sounds my memory provided the term "phonetic alphabet" and googling that helped a *ton*
We did also look up a hint for "the softest feather" and I felt dumb for not figuring it out when *everything* is about directions. English isn't our native toungue either, but I did know about down feathers, just didn't make the connection.
Both of us found the website cool :P we took that as our cue to look into all the work other people had done on figuring the sound language, it's really crazy stuff. Basically the sound of the website is a rosetta stone which enabled people to translate what all the fairies say and some other bits and pieces. Even if I'm not smart enough to participate in that kind of puzzles that take a whole community to figure out, I'm still super appreciative that it's there.

I maintain that the bit about phonetics wasn't _really_ a spoiler, at least not for "beating" the game (i.e. getting both endings). Still, I'm very impressed and surprised that you 100%-ed the game, and that you cut down so much footage into one video. (Granted, this might be the first playthrough I've seen that actually did collect all the trophies. I think most others I've seen rush to the boss after collecting the final page and leave the game there.)
Now, if you haven't seen it, and you have a moment, time to check out the developers reacting to a 24-minute world record speedrun. It's really interesting learning what features they included _specifically_ for speedrunners, such as the second sword and certain item chests. th-cam.com/video/dUA-MPk1KC0/w-d-xo.html

Well, I didn't lie when I warned about how far-fetched some puzzles are in this game, did I? You managed to solve so many on your own though, that was really impressive! By the time I understood what was asked of us, I was already annoyed of going back and forth in the overworld to find a needle in a haystack. I also didn't bother collecting all 12 golden items, but I wanted to see the true ending so I simply followed a guide to get everything needed. I wish they had made the puzzles a little simpler, to me it was so obscure that I ended up almost furious at the game. I still love it though, but I don't think I will ever replay it just because of the puzzles. The final nail on the coffin was trying to open the golden path, considering how many steps are required and how easy it is to let one mistake slip through. The good news for you is that, if you ever decide to play Chants of Sennaar, it should be much MUCH easier than this!

It can definitely become a bit tiresome to go back and forth looking for small things, (and I cut out a lot of that from the video which is why I managed to trim it down so much) but I do appreciate that a lot of it is just in the book itself if you know where to look. But some of the secrets were definitely really obscure lol
