An eloquent and unexpected, delightful version of a timeless tune... This is truly an inspired, creative and wonderful performance. Thank You Mr Clapton...
Happy Birthday Ronny, the heart of my existence, this song is for you. I will be with you again for eternity. I have a date with a Angel. Eric Clapton was his all time favorite artist. He thought Eric was a genius.
Such a complete in tune band RIP BILLY and the rest of you read Eric Clapton like magic happens with Eric , Nathan , Steve and Chris. Please never stop as BB King when I die you live a day longer ❤ 💓 💕
Clapton plays and sings Jazz (sort of): A very nice performance, a very heavy band personnel, and a more than decent execution of this tune. (Extremely cool intro of these extremely prestigious band members, by the way: Billy Preston, David Sancious and Steve Gadd on the same stage? Please.) Addenda: Harold Arlen, the songwriting Master of the Bluesy Non-Blues, wrote all of the music for the songs in "Wizard of Oz," perhaps his least "bluesy" output... ...but his Blues-leanings sure get uncovered here, don't they? This may be the best actual "singing" I have ever heard Clapton do... He's actually placed himself, vocally, in Paul McCartney's league here; Note the grace of the final bows, and the peace on Clapton's face as he leaves the stage... When's the last time you've heard a Major Rock Star close a show by telling the crowd, "God Bless You?"
I'm a Clapton fan all the way but I must say how nice it was to watch him announce his fellow musicians and show such appreciation for the opportunity to work with each of them.
@62brian62 Really? Thanks for that tidbit. I'm glad they included this in their set list, otherwise the world would've been unaware of this wonderful version.
@KayPerestrello the one from scrubs is kinda like the beach boys harmonizing to the tune, and they were great at harmonizing on melancholic beautiful tunes.
@KayPerestrello Israel Bruddah Iz Kamakawiwoʻole his version is so great, so full of love and joy, and believe it or not, even the cover done on scrubs, covering Izs version with 4 part harmonies provided by Teds Band (The Blanks). my favorite covers besides this one here.
Their are too many chords to state but the scale is in C#m. I GREAT site that doesn't have Clapton's songs blocked is E-Chords(dot)com. You can find the whole song and chord structure there.
Actually it's not the same guitar he played at the Concert for Bangladesh-a show that he played for free along with dozens of other artists to help a friend raise money for hungry children. Sure, Clapton was a mess in the 70's and part of the 80's. He cleaned himself up and started a treatment center for addicts. What have you done for your fellow man lately Bigruss?
For those convinced that Clapton is not a particularly versatile guitarist or singer, or scorns anything not based on Delta blues, or can't interpret a fine old tin pan alley standard in a sensitive and brilliant way . . . watch this video. Somewhere, Yip Harburg is clapping and cheering. Or at least I'd like to think so.
Always Love ❤️ Eric Clapton 🌹Amazing man ❤️Beautiful voice 🌹❤️🌹❤️🌹❤️🌹❤️🌹❤️🌹

He is playing the E major scale + some licks borrowed from the E mixolydian mode and E blues scale. Not just pentatonic. @ridhwwww

I wonder if 2m44s was rehearsed? Whether it was or not, the roar from the crowd immediately after says it all.

Would anyone know the drawbar settings for the organ on this song?
Does tabs exist for this version? I mean, i'd really like to learn this jazzy part he's playing while introducing the band.

I wonder if that is the same guitar Clapton used to embarass himself at the George Harrison Concert for Bangladesh!
Might've been the same guitar he stole his wife with
