Real good discussion as always. Glad to hear you guys talking about DNF Duel compared to Granblue because I find that fascinating. There is a lot of overlap in there with who made the games and where they originated from. But DNF Duel launched with more characters, way better online, a cheaper price, and had a much larger player base at launch. Not sure how Multiversus proved the F2P model's value. That initial install base was good, but the average player count now is worse than several years old, premium fighting games.
The way it proves it is that so many people checked out or tried it because it was free. The game being how it was caused the player count to die so fast but the reason they even tried it is because it was free, that's the only point he is making
@@krodmandoon3479 They canned it because SNK went bankrupt at that time. One thing interesting I find about multiversus compared to Nicktoons is that the super heroes already exist in another fighting game. Sure, this time it's superman versus shaggy, but Superman Batman and wonder woman were all in injustice. Between both games, I really wanted to play as Zim and Tom and Jerry. Because one was free and easy to play with friends, I was able to play Tom and Jerry. And to what surprise, I still haven't played Zim.
Lolol I would LOVE to play Jack Nicholson in a fighting game. “Coome on over BUDDY. I gaaaht somethin for yeh” *throws head back in laughter while holding a whiskey*
I still hope that street fighter 6 will have a mode where you can fight other people with the character you build if they do that on top of what they already done I don't think that another game will be able to come close to them . I think they already have the best fighting game so far that we have seen in forever.
I feel like the slow down of Multiversus updates has been due to the Warner Bros/Discovery merger to some degree. I'm sure the devs would have loved to add lots more characters from the shows that were inconveniently purged from HBO Max.
Guilty Gear Strive and their character's themes are pretty badass and fun to watch. My favourite track is Trigger, Colour, and Society and Milia Rage's theme and it's inspired me to listen to the full version of the Guilty Gear Strive Soundtrack and past series soundtrack on YT and Sporifty last year to current. And I am looking forward to the future character in the game. : )
I'm a casual & I bought KOF15 as my first KOF in hopes to play a team of Dolores, Darli Dagger, & Sylvie Paula Paula! I couldnt figure out Dolores so I started using Yuri, Athena, & Shermie. I then played every story arc & beat Rugal. Now I play the computer & use Darli, Chris, B. Jennet! I only play the computer because my first SNK was the new Samurai Shodown. So I've never played anyone online because everyone makes it sound like it's not worth it.
I went to Japan from Toronto, it was 13 hour direct flight, and that flight was easy. Played the switch half the time, went on wifi the other half lol.
I liked multiverse because it was free, had interesting characters, noticable/unique specials/gameplay, it allowed me to play w/ my friend instead of against him, and it gave me a reason to continue playing by offering battle pass cosmetics even when losing. But if I had to narrow down these options it would be good gameplay and gave me a reason to keep playing because I wanted to unlock something new cosmetically. Imagine how long someone would grind to have Tekken levels of customization.
Multiversus definitely caugh a lot of attention because of the IPs. A fan of one or several properties represented in the game would hear about it. A game of thrones fan will hear "there's this game with GoT character and Batman" and then check it out. And since that includes some of the most well known IPs in the world, this means that even if only a tiny fraction of these fans actually plays it after hearing about it, that's still a lot of people. Don't get me wrong, it wouldn't have worked as well if it wasn't free to play, in fact exactly because someone who just want to try a game out of curiosity after hearing "There's Shaggy and Aria in a game" wouldn't *buy* a game just for that reason. But on the flipside it wouldn't have worked so well if it didn't have all theses IP even with the exact same game because most of the people who played it would have never heard of it. Both factors impacted it. What worked for this game wouldn't work for everything.
I'm listening on my Xbox and just realized I actually had KOF XIII installed and didn't even know . First time playing it, this shit is damn near perfect
Damn near perfect gameplay and some of the best 2D sprites ever! I understand why they went 3D with the new titles but I wish games still looked/felt like KOF13. Arcsys does such a great job of giving us that hand-drawn 2D feel in HD using 3D models.
Looks like if people don't buy games, they stop supporting it and releasing new ones. But if people buy too many of them, they stop caring about fixing them because people will still buy them anyways, even if they have issues, so it doesn't matter if they are unbalaced, glitchy or have really bad online. They will just make paid dlc characters, that makes money, unlike giving free rollback/crossplay&crossgen. This conversation reminded me of pokemon company don't giving a fuсk about quality
Facts theres now two ways about. It's the only fighting game from 2022 that's still growing strong has and good competitive community and even with its match making faults people are still playing the game.
I know they already had like a whole episode on it essentially, but I would have loved to see more talk on Rumbleverse. I’ve had a lot of fun with that game and I come back and play a bunch of matches all the time. I get if they don’t fully consider it a fighting game but rather just a battle royale/wrestling game.
respect to Justin Wong for talking about the matchmaking for KOF. Max and Matt didn't address that when they talked. If the matchmaking is a fail, the game is a fail. KOF IS NOT amongst the best fighting games of the year at all. Do not put it in that category.
Damn, I know Max gets very excited to talk about fighting games and he's got a lot of information about them but he's gotta let the other two talk. He cut them off and talked over them the entire episode
That was something that happened more in the earlier episodes of TKO with both Max and Matt, but improved gradually over time. I guess Max got a little too excited this episode. He's a pro, so he'll likely be more conscientious about it next time.
I think he meant specifically that free to play gets people in the door (which it did, the launch was huge, people wanted to check it out) and that with the right combination of micro transactions you can make boatloads of money in the first week/month (which they did, supposedly) without totally scaring away players who just want to play for free. It’s obviously fallen off a bit now but launch week numbers are everything in the game industry 🤷♀️
Yes, despite losing 99% of its player base it still has more players then the majority of premium fighting games on steam so I don’t really get how people can argue it doesn’t work. Unless you somehow think “works” means it is guaranteed success no matter what the game is or does.
I’m honestly waiting for the day that 3D fighters as a whole rediscover themselves when it comes to the visuals the way we’re seeing in cinematic animation moving away from the realistic stuff Pixar established and refined in the 2000’s to these really exciting and colourful stylizations in stuff like Spiderverse, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Bad guys, Puss in Boots Last wish. We’ve got these happy middle ground of what people loved from older 2D animation and the wonders of 3D. Idk man, maybe it’s just me but it feels like we’re still spinning the tires on that front even with SF6 looking as expensive and high fidelity as it does and lord knows the money and effort put into NRS games or Tekken 8 and so on.
@@DCFHazardRebornChannel Well that's good and all, but the fact of the matter is that GG's current look is not a good example for "a new IP coming up with a new style" and you probably want to use a different game instead. It doesn't matter how niche old GG was, old GG existed. Also, you can't say their 3D look was "unique" and then turn around and say that 2D GG had "practically exactly the same style", those are mutually exclusive. It would probably be more accurate to say that their current look is an evolution of their older style, which is indeed a completely different thing than an anime title going full tilt realism or the other way around.
I find it hilarious how they talk about how there are no (non-emulated) AAA 3D fighting games with good online when For Honor has existed since 2017. Yes I know it's not a traditional "fighting game" but still, point stands.
Got the Nickelodeon game and played for a total of 1 hour. It played OK, but there was just so little content as to not be worth it. Was excited for Multiversus because Bugs Bunny, but the second they said F2P I noped out.
Idk about “bust” but man it felt like 1 week everyone was talking about it nonstop but then at some point soon after, NOBODY was talking about it. I’m sure it’ll be like a lot of other live service stuff that just quietly chugs along in the background with a dedicated fan base but idk, something about the drop off in talk for it got me furrowing my brow. I guess it’s unrealistic for every similar crossover game to have alot of talk around it constantly the way Fortnite and Smash Bros does.

The way it proves it is that so many people checked out or tried it because it was free. The game being how it was caused the player count to die so fast but the reason they even tried it is because it was free, that's the only point he is making
SNK has said they're going forward w/ a new visual style for Garou 2/New FF
I hope that "new" style is just finishing the Garou 2 they canned at 60% complete without explanation
@@krodmandoon3479 They canned it because SNK went bankrupt at that time.
There was an interview with Oda where he talked about the new Garou and he said that:
- it will be a continuation of MotWs story however, the game will not be called Mark of the Wolves 2
- There will be more returning characters from previous Fatal Fury games, which makes it more of a FF title rather than Garou 2
- The game will have a bigger budget and more single player content than any previous SNK fighting game
- it will use a different art style than SamSho or Kof15
@@SlowLearner-z3h Ok but couldn't they have just went back to work on it once they were bought? It's not like they ever ceased to exist as a company for an extended period of time.
@@krodmandoon3479months old but the source code was lost. They couldn't go back to that build even if they wanted to. Even then, I'd rather see something new than them regressing back to an old rom running on early 90s hardware. They said it'd have a different visual style than any of their new games, so maybe they're going for something more unique looking & not late 90s style sprites/ 8th gen cel-shaded 3d.
However, if you want an authentic early 2000s MoTW-like on the NeoGeo, play Rage of the Dragons. It looks pretty similar.
I was lucky enough to live in Japan from ‘08-‘11. Did arcades, food, and even TGS a couple of times. Had so much fun.
I really want to go back now that I have a kid and let her see it
Living in Japan in that period seriously sounds like the most awesome thing ever.
@@DiSCERiTY It was. As I said, I was just very fortunate to have that opportunity due to my job. My wife and I miss it all the time. For her, she loved the shopping and their entertainment districts. One day, we will visit again.
If you ever get a chance to go, do it.
30:00 nah rock isn't ass, he still has really easy confirms and has tools for every situation. He just doesn't have those all of those tools cranked up to 11 anymore
I've been playing SC 6 this week, and haven't the issues you guys mentioned much at all. Not perfect by any means, but been having some fun fights!
Matt’s nu metal eyebrows and eyebrow ring in 2023 is my favorite thing ever. Matt is the best ❤
Sylvie is actually pretty popular in Asia.
All the kof xiv newcomers are really
Max actually used the word "comeuppance" wrong twice, so I don't think it was just a mistake. Unless he thinks those games deserve to get punished for their past actions.
I heard War of the Monsters twice, this episode is officially a success
Lolol I would LOVE to play Jack Nicholson in a fighting game. “Coome on over BUDDY. I gaaaht somethin for yeh” *throws head back in laughter while holding a whiskey*
2023 will be a great year for fighters! 😻
It costs money to travel the world in soul calibur 6!
26:31 yeah let’s just forget about team $15 and Team Garou
29:40 he’s still stupid good, if anything Gato got hit harder
they still hiding kims pants, that tech must be revolutionary... or he's got shorts now
I noticed we haven't seen animation of him yet.
SNK must know the meme....
@@o_oro-q1k facts you are so right. Theres a whole bunch of people that throw their views around but dont actually play the game
Sounds like you're enjoying the game ignore the noise from everyone else dont let people influence what you like
I went to Japan from Toronto, it was 13 hour direct flight, and that flight was easy.
Just to make sure it's there:
22:30 Matt McMuscles eats his hat because of Sylvie
God KOFXIII on modern console with rollback would be awesome
I'm listening on my Xbox and just realized I actually had KOF XIII installed and didn't even know . First time playing it, this shit is damn near perfect
Damn near perfect gameplay and some of the best 2D sprites ever! I understand why they went 3D with the new titles but I wish games still looked/felt like KOF13. Arcsys does such a great job of giving us that hand-drawn 2D feel in HD using 3D models.
Kof XIII is amazing, the end of an era for 2d fighters.
King Of Fighters XV is the best Fighting Game of 2022 :D
Facts theres now two ways about. It's the only fighting game from 2022 that's still growing strong has and good competitive community and even with its match making faults people are still playing the game.
ah nothing starts the early rise of a work day better than coffee and chill to some fighting game culture
The 3 goats in one pod.
Verryy nice
I know they already had like a whole episode on it essentially, but I would have loved to see more talk on Rumbleverse. I’ve had a lot of fun with that game and I come back and play a bunch of matches all the time. I get if they don’t fully consider it a fighting game but rather just a battle royale/wrestling game.
RIP Rumbleverse
And call it the MuscleWongDood collection 😂😂😂
It is a shame that multiverus lost a ton of its audience!
Matt hating on my favorite character Sylvie gave me the big sadge 3:

Amm you guys do realize that DNF Duel actually has an rpg level up mode? It's weird how Max says hr played the hell of DNF and he doesn't know it
That's not the type of mode that was being referring to at all. We've said this in past episodes.
To be honest max says a lot of things that's incorrect
Greetings from Germany
respect to Justin Wong for talking about the matchmaking for KOF. Max and Matt didn't address that when they talked. If the matchmaking is a fail, the game is a fail. KOF IS NOT amongst the best fighting games of the year at all. Do not put it in that category.
Mk 11 literally just has Arnold and Stallone
Damn, I know Max gets very excited to talk about fighting games and he's got a lot of information about them but he's gotta let the other two talk. He cut them off and talked over them the entire episode
Yea it got to the point that I was paying more attention to that than the podcast. And made me feel 2nd hand awkward.
That was something that happened more in the earlier episodes of TKO with both Max and Matt, but improved gradually over time. I guess Max got a little too excited this episode. He's a pro, so he'll likely be more conscientious about it next time.
Would pay money to see matt eat his hat off his foot for that last announcement.
Does Justin speak Japanese or does he communicate with his moves?
He can speak parry from Daigo 😂
Dang, that comment about an MvC Collection at 1:07:40 has aged poorly. Just in a good way.
Justin Wong FLOSSING!!!!
“Multiversus is proof that free to play works”
Is it, Max? IS IT?
2022 Airline companies review
Im so mad I just found out J. Wong & Max had a podcast about fighting games.....wtf??
@@DCFHazardRebornChannel GG didn't bring in its unique anime style as a new IP though, Xrd was the 4th installation in the series.
Tekken 3 is probably locked up in rights with Gon, who's a manga character.
There are no flights over the North Pole

Mk10 > Mk11
I see nothing wrong here
100% with you on that one. 11 feels so clunky.
I find it hilarious how they talk about how there are no (non-emulated) AAA 3D fighting games with good online when For Honor has existed since 2017.
Yes I know it's not a traditional "fighting game" but still, point stands.
To me, KOF 16 or GAROU 2 need to go full on Anime, with a persona-ish look
To be Fair Matt, Sylvie looks way better!!! She now looks like a Vtuber!!! I'm willing to give her a second chance.
Not even a mention of Sifu, shame on you (?

Max was a lot more chatty this episode. Is nice to see
Got the Nickelodeon game and played for a total of 1 hour. It played OK, but there was just so little content as to not be worth it. Was excited for Multiversus because Bugs Bunny, but the second they said F2P I noped out.

Sylvie is peak
sam sho has a slightly better presentation but for modern characters it just looks so boring
MultiVersus was a complete cash grab bust.
Define, "bust."
In every metric but finance and some great animations, the game blows fat chunks.
Damn shame too.
After playing rivals of aether and knowing what a good platform fighter actually felt like...
No way I'm even glancing at multiversus again
No talk about Guilty Gear Strive?
It didn't come out in 2022. Pretty clear that was the focus of this episode. We didn't talk about Tekken 7 or Street Fighter V either.
