Brent, I don't read everyone's posts, so I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but... I think your water problem is because that one single pump is trying to push up water at over 300 psi! A 700 foot column of water has a pressure of 303.46 psi. If you installed three pumps, at different levels, they would have to push up less psi. 250 feet of water only has 108 psi. That would be much easier on the pumps. If you are going to stick to only the one pump, it should be a geared pump, in my opinion.
Back flow check valves work wonders to releave pressure on your pump in your lines. I use to have to pump close to 1000 vertical ft with a diaphragm pump at 400psi. The trick is to use exhaust clamps instead of hose clamps or your connections will explode from the pressure.
That is what I miss most about 'my' desert. I grew up in Las Vegas and used to get away from the lights so I could stargaze. On a good night, the Milky Way looked like you could reach out and yank it to Earth. I miss my home so much. I've been in New York for too long. I am praying this is my last winter here. Any type of observation site in Cerro Gordo would be amazing.✌😸

You should keep a list of everyone's names involved in helping rebuild the town and once complete immortalize them some way in the town so they have a stronger sense of making history.

Brent I grew up on a ranch in the NM desert. It was a 74miles to school every day. It was difficult get things to the ranch. We had to build our homes and provide all our own maintenance. I joined the Navy in 88 and then after college in 93 ended up an airline pilot. Couldn't keep an FAA medical, so 2010 started a construction company. If I could, I join you to help you rebuild the town. I wish you the best. There is nothing like beautiful than living in the high desert.
Brent, I have to be honest with you. I've been pretty much a silent observer of your videos from the beginning and when I watched E1, 20 months ago I thought, this is gonna end badly. Since that time and thru watching every time you post a new video I am just more and more impressed by you. Your fortitude and perseverance is honourable and what your doing deserves to be acknowledged by the State of Californi, you've certainly got our attention. Keep going, be careful and hats off to you young man!

I can honestly say, Brent is the ONLY human who took the two worse years this world has EVER seen and made it the most extraordinary thing to ever happen. He litterly packed up in the middle of a pandemic moved to an abandoned town and turned it into the most positive outcome you could ever imagine. And considering we have modern medicine now it is one of the worst we ever had, the only one worse would be Aids but again Covid is way easier transmitted then Aids

Hell, the Spanish flu, 100 years ago, infected over 500,000,000 people, and the death toll was around 50,000,000. Did you get home schooled or something? Allowed to drive a vehicle?
You probably been asked this already but Bottle digging is getting huge here in the UK and in the USA Your town would have had a dump around it somewhere. Have you thought of looking for it and excavating it as much history can be found in old abandoned towns like yours. Glass bottles from the 17 and 1800's still lay under the dirt fully intact. That would make some fantastic videos..
Brent, I dearly love watching every episode you shoot. I'm 75 now and my health is catching up with me so I don't get out to prospect near as often as I want. I also am a care giver for two people so that eats up most of my time.. My mining partner and I have claims in northeast Oregon. We have three historic mines, them Monumental, the Baisely-Elkhorn and the gold hill. We have hand dug out the Monumental and Gold Hill. Both have levels that are 1,700 feet long. We are presently trying to to descend done the shaft from the upper level of the Monumental to the second level where there is a richer vein. It is a silver mine started by the English but shut down in 1902 by our government because of foreign ownership. It assays 80 per cenr silver and 20 per cent gold.. When I was in the 6th Grade in about 1957-8, my dad and a good friend took me on a trip to the Panamint Mountains. We visited an active mine south of Panamint City. The miners had a functioning aerial tram way. I recall huge flywheels and steam engines used to power the winches at the mine head. Really nice folks. They had a spare cabin where we stayed. Breakfast at their house. Quite an adventure for me. Later my Dad and his WWII Navy Buddy went to the Saline Valley during what probably was an atmospheric river storm. Snow blocked the road in from Olancha. They stayed with a miner on the west side of the Saline Vally. Took advantage of the hot springs before being rescued by a volunteer pilot out of Bishop. Later in the spring they returned to drive out their truck.
Your town would be instructive for college internships for history, archeology, engineering, hospitality majors to name a few. Never thought your journey would take so many roads/mining tunnels less travelled, much less garner so much interest. Thanks for bringing us along, Brent.

It’s inspiring to hear someone hit so many road blocks, things breaking, being turned down by contractors etc. I feel like people doing out of the norm things are going to experience out of the norm struggles, and there may be no one that knows how to solve a specific problem, or the problem is out of the budget. It’s great that you have so much support, but it also makes me wonder how you make ends meet.

You need a 3 stage pump system every 200 feet have a tank that the 1st pumps into with another pump to the 2nd tank with another pump feeding it to the top level . Your over working that 1 pump

Hey Brent, something you might like to try is having two ascenders, one for your left hand and foot and one for your right hand and foot. I use ascenders/descenders for going up and down ropes in trees, and I like the split left/right setup because you can get in a nice rhythm almost like climbing a ladder. It's also a bit of a more balanced use of your muscles, using one arm and one leg at a time rather than legs and arms separately.

Here's an idea that may be really cool, once you've got a full 3D scan of the mine, how about you make a cast of it using lead leftover from the silver making process? That way you have a full model of it you can display for guests ☺️

It's not the only the channel that's building the hotel... it's your persistentness and determination and your effort I'm a contractor and I wish I had the extra money to be able to go help you build the hotel... but with 3 kids not exactally the right time for me to do something like that but I would love to be part of it....

The profit is probably not huge and it's a way of supporting the project while still getting something back. Think of it as more of a donation.
Seeing how eagerly people have answered the call, throughout this channels chapters, reassures me, we are going to be alright, no matter how bad the world may get. The hearts of people, given by God, are what makes life real and good.
If you get chickens, they need a chicken run so they can be outside, get some sunshine, they will be happier and lay better, free range is the best. They need perches that are up high ( 6-8 feet up) so at night they will be safe. Just a few suggestions, fresh eggs are the best!!

The 3D scans taken in the mine could be overlaid onto relatively accurate maps of the mines. This would allow you to see where different part of the mines link up to eachother and allow you to more carefully plan exploration. The 3D scans can also easily be built upon by using LIDAR technology built into mobile devices or through the use of handheld Laserscanners such as a Leica BLK2go. I think its great that 3D scans have been taken of Cerro Gordo as they really add another dimension to what it is you're trying to do up there.
A good idea for the surface but underground is another idea. Im sure there are level maps still existing and if you can digitize them, put them into vulcan mining software to create a 3D model. That software is tailored to mines

Before you throw your hands up and say Idk, I'm just gonna call someone. Use your eyes. If the truck throws a belt or starts to overheat/not charge, all it takes is opening the hood to figure out the issue. If the brake fluid starts disappearing, you'll see a leaky wheel cylinder or brake line somewhere. Working on old military stuff is very easy. I mean you're gonna have to learn to wrench on them sooner or later anyways if you're alone up there. Might as well learn how to maintain them now and prevent bigger problems from occurring in the future.
Yes we should all have some knowledge of how to fix things, it is cool though that Brent is giving some people a chance to to help in building his dream. I'm sure there are many that would love to be involved and by Brent asking for help gives them an opportunity to get involved. What a great way to make friends and to give back by using their skills.

Neat video .....we used to get up to Cero Gordo back in the 1970s in a baja bug , and we would explore around and do some shooting....and we would stay down in Keeler where my brother in laws dad and uncle lived, and where they kept mules as well.... ..back in the day , his dad had worked for the mining company that was over in Darwin ,which is another ghost town ...the road going up to Cero Gordo looks much nicer than it did back in the 70s....Stay safe , and the best of luck on the restoration endeavors.
There is a video game called "The Forest" where you crash on a 'deserted' island with huge cave systems and you have to explore them to find much of the content of the game. Seeing your little home and random things you've left in the mines reminds me so much of the game. They seem so out of place, but they also make it feel like someone was there just trying to have a good time.
I would suggest talking with some genealogy TH-camrs about a collab, where they do some community research on some or all the families that lived in the town, in a specific time period. It could be a longterm project, you can dig super deep. But just some surface-level research about some of the families and maybe a bit extra on some of the more eye-catching or eventful people living in the town, can be done pretty quick. I would recommend starting with some newspaper story-based research. So you start out by finding an interesting story published by some newspaper about the town or mine, then you research the people involved a bit more, and then connect it to the specific house or part of town they would have lived in when the story was published. And then try and see if it's possible to find any photos of the people involved in the story.
Great idea. Ive honestly thought of something like this for him as well and mayb seeing if theres any living descendents of ppl who used to live there. Would be a great history project.

I agree, a different series of the behind the scenes by the volunteers would be very cool too, I obviously know Brent wont have time to also produce that himself but I honestly would watch many more hours of people sharing their genuine experiences in Cerro Gordo atm.
You're not only re-creating a town, you're creating a community! A community of like-minded, positive, supportive people around the world all cheering you on. That might be as lasting of a legacy as Cerro Gordo: the difference you have made in many people's lives when they feel a part of something important and worthwhile.
This series makes me realize that I was raised by two very separated parents. My dad has always been a "Get it done" kind of person where my mom was always very much, "The journey is the destination. Enjoy the ride" type of person. I sometimes find myself pulled towards my fathers direction by some weird sense of need but I find my mothers idea a much more enjoyable experience. She passed away in 2012 while my father lives today. I don't care about living a long life, as long as I enjoyed the life I lived.

Brent, not sure if you did or not (it doesn't look like it) but if that furnace didn't come with kaowool rigidizer, you should absolutely get that and put it on the wool before firing. the insulative wool sheds some nasty fibers (think asbestos) that you don't want to be near. rigidizer will go on like a liquid but will harden the wool. Most times people will then put a layer of satanite over the rigidized wool to not only further seal the wool, but also to reflect some heat back into the furnace.
Being here since less then 1000 subs, It is so incredible to have seen everything your channel has been through, the explorations, the builds… it’s been something I always look forward too!
Cerro Gordo is amongst the best quality videos and the story told of the Ghost Town draws a person to continue to explore and wonder what is to be next month. Grand Hotel would be an accomplishment for the 20 months of life experienced, for sure. Looking for some Silver for a ring might look into getting a piece of history. I love your positivity, no matter the situation. Just go with a positive attitude and things tend to work out. Also, I think it would be awesome to make a small coin for those who have helped along the way.
Agree! Also making sure there is one way valves on the inlet line (at the water source) will help the pump from going dry, this is the number one thing that kills a pump. Pump also needs a pressure switch/ manual switch to know when to start & stop pumping.
I do have to say, as a child I’ve always wanted to do what you did in a single year and a half, I wish I lived on the west coast still. As a hiker/miner I’d be helping with anything haha. I feel as a people we should have these little tiny towns of just individuals with great trade, willing to do what you’re doing, all good vibes, all good hearts. Teach the future the things they mastered 150 years ago!

Okay, you have mining, refining and casting silver, climbing, mine exploration, stargazing, building, archeology and masonry....when are you going to start shearing the goats and alpacas for spinning and weaving? Brent, I don't read everyone's posts, so I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but... I think your water problem is because that one single pump is trying to push up water at over 300 psi! A 700 foot column of water has a pressure of 303.46 psi. If you installed three pumps, at different levels, they would have to push up less psi. 250 feet of water only has 108 psi. That would be much easier on the pumps. If you are going to stick to only the one pump, it should be a geared pump, in my opinion.

I thought about the static pressure as well making the one pump work too hard. Good point.
Back flow check valves work wonders to releave pressure on your pump in your lines. I use to have to pump close to 1000 vertical ft with a diaphragm pump at 400psi. The trick is to use exhaust clamps instead of hose clamps or your connections will explode from the pressure.
Storage tanks at 3 different levels along with the pumps could help.Tanks would not have to be that big...

That is what I miss most about 'my' desert. I grew up in Las Vegas and used to get away from the lights so I could stargaze. On a good night, the Milky Way looked like you could reach out and yank it to Earth. I miss my home so much. I've been in New York for too long. I am praying this is my last winter here.

You should keep a list of everyone's names involved in helping rebuild the town and once complete immortalize them some way in the town so they have a stronger sense of making history.

Brent I grew up on a ranch in the NM desert. It was a 74miles to school every day. It was difficult get things to the ranch. We had to build our homes and provide all our own maintenance.
I joined the Navy in 88 and then after college in 93 ended up an airline pilot. Couldn't keep an FAA medical, so 2010 started a construction company. If I could, I join you to help you rebuild the town.
I wish you the best. There is nothing like beautiful than living in the high desert.

Brent, I have to be honest with you. I've been pretty much a silent observer of your videos from the beginning and when I watched E1, 20 months ago I thought, this is gonna end badly. Since that time and thru watching every time you post a new video I am just more and more impressed by you. Your fortitude and perseverance is honourable and what your doing deserves to be acknowledged by the State of Californi, you've certainly got our attention. Keep going, be careful and hats off to you young man!

I can honestly say, Brent is the ONLY human who took the two worse years this world has EVER seen and made it the most extraordinary thing to ever happen. He litterly packed up in the middle of a pandemic moved to an abandoned town and turned it into the most positive outcome you could ever imagine. And considering we have modern medicine now it is one of the worst we ever had, the only one worse would be Aids but again Covid is way easier transmitted then Aids

You probably been asked this already but Bottle digging is getting huge here in the UK and in the USA Your town would have had a dump around it somewhere. Have you thought of looking for it and excavating it as much history can be found in old abandoned towns like yours. Glass bottles from the 17 and 1800's still lay under the dirt fully intact. That would make some fantastic videos..

Brent, I dearly love watching every episode you shoot. I'm 75 now and my health is catching up with me so I don't get out to prospect near as often as I want. I also am a care giver for two people so that eats up most of my time.. My mining partner and I have claims in northeast Oregon. We have three historic mines, them Monumental, the Baisely-Elkhorn and the gold hill. We have hand dug out the Monumental and Gold Hill. Both have levels that are 1,700 feet long. We are presently trying to to descend done the shaft from the upper level of the Monumental to the second level where there is a richer vein. It is a silver mine started by the English but shut down in 1902 by our government because of foreign ownership. It assays 80 per cenr silver and 20 per cent gold.. When I was in the 6th Grade in about 1957-8, my dad and a good friend took me on a trip to the Panamint Mountains. We visited an active mine south of Panamint City. The miners had a functioning aerial tram way. I recall huge flywheels and steam engines used to power the winches at the mine head. Really nice folks. They had a spare cabin where we stayed. Breakfast at their house. Quite an adventure for me. Later my Dad and his WWII Navy Buddy went to the Saline Valley during what probably was an atmospheric river storm. Snow blocked the road in from Olancha. They stayed with a miner on the west side of the Saline Vally. Took advantage of the hot springs before being rescued by a volunteer pilot out of Bishop. Later in the spring they returned to drive out their truck.
Your town would be instructive for college internships for history, archeology, engineering, hospitality majors to name a few. Never thought your journey would take so many roads/mining tunnels less travelled, much less garner so much interest. Thanks for bringing us along, Brent.

It’s inspiring to hear someone hit so many road blocks, things breaking, being turned down by contractors etc.
I feel like people doing out of the norm things are going to experience out of the norm struggles, and there may be no one that knows how to solve a specific problem, or the problem is out of the budget. It’s great that you have so much support, but it also makes me wonder how you make ends meet.

You need a 3 stage pump system every 200 feet have a tank that the 1st pumps into with another pump to the 2nd tank with another pump feeding it to the top level . Your over working that 1 pump
I’ve been trying to tell Brent this with no avail I wonder if his main pump is somehow cavitating?
They have collapsible tanks he could easily get down there and transfer the water the way you mentioned.
I'm wondering if the thought of the 200 level and a pump there is giving him the sh--s. That level is death incarnate.

Hey Brent, something you might like to try is having two ascenders, one for your left hand and foot and one for your right hand and foot. I use ascenders/descenders for going up and down ropes in trees, and I like the split left/right setup because you can get in a nice rhythm almost like climbing a ladder. It's also a bit of a more balanced use of your muscles, using one arm and one leg at a time rather than legs and arms separately.

Dear Brent hello from the U.K and thank you for yet another entertaining update from Cerro Gordo. I love the fact that you are doing so much to help preserve some of the history of your country. Please though get the adverts setup so as to monetize your videos, I would love to feel like I am participating in funding you keeping the history alive. Especially as I do not have a lot of money to my name and so could not afford to donate in any other way. I think a lot of other people would also agree with this sentiment. Here's an idea that may be really cool, once you've got a full 3D scan of the mine, how about you make a cast of it using lead leftover from the silver making process? That way you have a full model of it you can display for guests ☺️

It's not the only the channel that's building the hotel... it's your persistentness and determination and your effort I'm a contractor and I wish I had the extra money to be able to go help you build the hotel... but with 3 kids not exactally the right time for me to do something like that but I would love to be part of it....

Seeing how eagerly people have answered the call, throughout this channels chapters, reassures me, we are going to be alright, no matter how bad the world may get. The hearts of people, given by God, are what makes life real and good.
If you get chickens, they need a chicken run so they can be outside, get some sunshine, they will be happier and lay better, free range is the best. They need perches that are up high ( 6-8 feet up) so at night they will be safe. Just a few suggestions, fresh eggs are the best!!

This gives the meaning of "It takes a Village" a whole new meaning. It warms my heart seeing everyone come together too help.
The 3D scans taken in the mine could be overlaid onto relatively accurate maps of the mines. This would allow you to see where different part of the mines link up to eachother and allow you to more carefully plan exploration. The 3D scans can also easily be built upon by using LIDAR technology built into mobile devices or through the use of handheld Laserscanners such as a Leica BLK2go.
I think its great that 3D scans have been taken of Cerro Gordo as they really add another dimension to what it is you're trying to do up there.
A good idea for the surface but underground is another idea. Im sure there are level maps still existing and if you can digitize them, put them into vulcan mining software to create a 3D model. That software is tailored to mines

Before you throw your hands up and say Idk, I'm just gonna call someone. Use your eyes. If the truck throws a belt or starts to overheat/not charge, all it takes is opening the hood to figure out the issue. If the brake fluid starts disappearing, you'll see a leaky wheel cylinder or brake line somewhere. Working on old military stuff is very easy. I mean you're gonna have to learn to wrench on them sooner or later anyways if you're alone up there. Might as well learn how to maintain them now and prevent bigger problems from occurring in the future.
Yes we should all have some knowledge of how to fix things, it is cool though that Brent is giving some people a chance to to help in building his dream. I'm sure there are many that would love to be involved and by Brent asking for help gives them an opportunity to get involved. What a great way to make friends and to give back by using their skills.

But you, your channel and your awesome content take me out of my routines and bring me to an inner joy I didn't know before. Seeing you fulfilling your dream and building up something so important to you is kinda inspiring. You're not only building up a new/old town. It's more like you're building up a small society of people through bringing them together due to your project. I love seeing this and your progress on the town and on yourself.

Neat video .....we used to get up to Cero Gordo back in the 1970s
in a baja bug , and we would explore around and do some shooting....and we would stay down in Keeler where my brother in laws dad and uncle lived, and where they kept mules as well....
..back in the day , his dad had worked for the mining company that was over in Darwin ,which is another ghost town ...the road going up to Cero Gordo looks much nicer than it did back in the 70s....Stay safe , and the best of luck on the restoration endeavors.
There is a video game called "The Forest" where you crash on a 'deserted' island with huge cave systems and you have to explore them to find much of the content of the game. Seeing your little home and random things you've left in the mines reminds me so much of the game. They seem so out of place, but they also make it feel like someone was there just trying to have a good time.
Maaaan I totally get that reference! Gutted we gotta wait till next year now for the sequel..

I would suggest talking with some genealogy TH-camrs about a collab, where they do some community research on some or all the families that lived in the town, in a specific time period.
It could be a longterm project, you can dig super deep. But just some surface-level research about some of the families and maybe a bit extra on some of the more eye-catching or eventful people living in the town, can be done pretty quick.
I would recommend starting with some newspaper story-based research. So you start out by finding an interesting story published by some newspaper about the town or mine, then you research the people involved a bit more, and then connect it to the specific house or part of town they would have lived in when the story was published.
And then try and see if it's possible to find any photos of the people involved in the story.
I know I'd love to learn more about the individuals who lived and worked at Cerro Gordo, great idea 🤘💜🤘

I agree, a different series of the behind the scenes by the volunteers would be very cool too, I obviously know Brent wont have time to also produce that himself but I honestly would watch many more hours of people sharing their genuine experiences in Cerro Gordo atm.

That might be as lasting of a legacy as Cerro Gordo: the difference you have made in many people's lives when they feel a part of something important and worthwhile.

This series makes me realize that I was raised by two very separated parents. My dad has always been a "Get it done" kind of person where my mom was always very much, "The journey is the destination. Enjoy the ride" type of person. I sometimes find myself pulled towards my fathers direction by some weird sense of need but I find my mothers idea a much more enjoyable experience.
She passed away in 2012 while my father lives today. I don't care about living a long life, as long as I enjoyed the life I lived.

Brent, not sure if you did or not (it doesn't look like it) but if that furnace didn't come with kaowool rigidizer, you should absolutely get that and put it on the wool before firing. the insulative wool sheds some nasty fibers (think asbestos) that you don't want to be near. rigidizer will go on like a liquid but will harden the wool. Most times people will then put a layer of satanite over the rigidized wool to not only further seal the wool, but also to reflect some heat back into the furnace.
Being here since less then 1000 subs, It is so incredible to have seen everything your channel has been through, the explorations, the builds… it’s been something I always look forward too!
Cerro Gordo is amongst the best quality videos and the story told of the Ghost Town draws a person to continue to explore and wonder what is to be next month. Grand Hotel would be an accomplishment for the 20 months of life experienced, for sure. Looking for some Silver for a ring might look into getting a piece of history. Could you stage water storage up the through the different levels with a few more pumps? Might help that one pump have less stress.
Agree! Also making sure there is one way valves on the inlet line (at the water source) will help the pump from going dry, this is the number one thing that kills a pump.
Pump also needs a pressure switch/ manual switch to know when to start & stop pumping.

I do have to say, as a child I’ve always wanted to do what you did in a single year and a half, I wish I lived on the west coast still. As a hiker/miner I’d be helping with anything haha. I feel as a people we should have these little tiny towns of just individuals with great trade, willing to do what you’re doing, all good vibes, all good hearts. Teach the future the things they mastered 150 years ago!
