  • This was the busiest month yet! at Cerro Gordo! Tons of progress around the town this month. I officially broke ground on the American Hotel thanks to a lot of support, salvaged a ton of wood from a neighboring ghost town, took the scariest trip down the Union Mine yet, and a lot more!

      Love the Video's!
The voltage drop over the 700' of electical cable and connections will cause your pump amperage to rise(heat rise) and could be the cause of these issues. If you increase the conductor size and decrease the number of connections it will help deliver the correct voltage. Testing voltage under load will give you an idea if this is your issue. I would be happy the help with the formula for voltage drop over that distacne if you supply the name plate of your pump, total distance and ambient temperature. It looked like an extension cord that you plugged into in the video; if so this is almost certainly causing voltage drop over that distance. Stay safe!

Oh I so want to come volunteer. Not only do I have my own motorhome but I also come with my own tools. Not only do I know how to work on remodeling homes but we also come with my ex-wife/ best friend who does small engine repair (so does my 11 year old. BUT.... "🥁🥁🥁🥁" I also happen to be a nurse! I would really love to find out more in regards to your volunteer need and would love to bring my family out to work camp for several months. Hi Brent, I am finding your channel so interesting, I was by profession a mining geologist. Back in the late sixties early seventies, I had a job researching all the tin mines of the counties of Cornwall and Devon in South West England with a view to see if it was worth reopening them. As you may or may not know that tin and copper have been mined there since before the Romans invaded England in 53 AD. We were given three years to complete the Job, firstly we looked for the spoil tips, and took samples from the tips to be analysed, it quickly becomes obvious that using modern methods a lot of ore for tin, copper, and other metals could be extracted from the spoil. Since then over these following years, nearly all the spoil tips have now been removed and reprocessed. I noticed in videos of the ghost town there appear to be many spoil tips around the area which would be worth having checked out. Looking at some of your vids taken in the mines it would appear that you could have quite a lot of copper as well. And don't forget rare-earth elements bound to be some in your mines and spoil tips.

What kinda radios and bands did you try using? GMRS/FRS? VHF, UHF? For the actual ride down the shaft, you might actually be better off using a CB radio for communicating as that operates more in the HF range (11 meter wavelength/27MHz) which should be attenuated less.
Once you're at the bottom though, and you're no longer in line of sight, maybe a simple wired telephone circuit would be better.

1/2" Pex tubing is too small to pump water a long distance, you will have a huge pressure drop over the length of the tubing run. You need several check valves in the horizontal run of pipe to eliminate the short cycling of the pump forcing it to run every time the water drops down the pipe and has to run again to get it to the surface.

Yeah, lift is a huge factor when choosing the right pump for the job. And when you're having to pull through 50ft of small diameter tubing AND lift 700ft, thats a lot of strain on a pump. That's probably why he gets not much more than a trickle at the surface and burns up pumps.

All depends on the the pump, right? So many factors involved, but pumps aren't actually pulling, they're pushing water. If the pump is properly placed, 1/2" is ideal. Placed elsewhere, 3/4" is ideal.

If a single pump is not strong enough to handle the entire 700 feet water column, maybe you could set up a midway tank for the water and have another pump push the water rest of the way?

Brent, you should confer with a professional well driller. They regularly drill water wells 700, 800 feet or more and put in well pumps that work at that depth reliability. The technology is readily availabe to pump water from those depths. Granted the prices I have heard are around $5 per foot, 700 feet = $3500. I don't know if that is just the drilling or maybe includes the pump that brings the water to the surface.

How can anyone stay in a bad mood if you’re watching this man his enthusiasm is infectious! I would give anything to be able to volunteer but I’m disabled with multiple sclerosis but I can be there vicariously through Brents videos. I love history and have bought and sold antiques for the last 54 years up until the progression of my MS. In the course of hunting for artifacts I have crawled through 100 + year old barns, under collapsed buildings, dark basements, closed mill buildings, hoarded houses + dug in old bottle dumps and have donated a fair share of found artifacts to the towns I found them in. I so appreciate your love of history and preserving Cerro Gordo I hope you can keep it low-key and not let corporate find out about you and make you ‘an offer you can’t refuse’. So the average person can go there and see what you see and take a deep breath kick their feet up and just…..take a break from the insanity of this world. Thank you for sharing You with us. For the wood, I would suggests going with the "old for the eye, new from the inside" way. Making the bones that won't be seen from new wood and saving that beautiful old lumber for the parts that people will see. It can feel wrong but think it as saving the old lumber to the places where it matters the most.
Another idea I had when you talked about how hard it is to get lumber. Once the prices come down and things get more stable and the times calm down. You should consider building some new buildings from new lumber outside of the main village. Maybe rebuild some satellite sites to be used as cottages available for renting or just used as storage. Now now, I hear you saying that goes against what you said about wanting to use as much old lumber as possible, but hear me out. Those satellite sites you would build now from new lumber would have beautiful old lumber 100 years from now, ready to be used to restore, uphold and rebuild Cerro Gordo then. You could even just build racks to age lumber in places where there has been old building that had beautiful lumber used to rebuild something else but aren't that visible places.
You don't only need to think to rebuild and preserve Cerro Gordo for the next century, you could also think how you can help your successor to preserve Cerro Gordo the century after yours. And as you are happy to find a old building to take apart for its old lumber, your successors could be happy to find buildings that they can teardown for beautiful old lumber. While it goes against your vision, it's something you specifically don't build for yourself but you build for the visions of those who come after you.

Brent, when you’re charged up and happy, your giving nature turns it all into a charisma that raises all boats. And that’s one of the best things in this world. I have to say, Dave Sparks deserved more of a title than Man of the Hour, but I suspect the faint praise was intentional, that two charismatic men of ‘Agency’ (which you spoke of in your book) would know was just a dig endemic to the hearty give and take of masculine comeraderie.
And Brent, that all-black outfit you were wearing in the intro was a good look for you, IMHO. Swapping out a couple items with leather and silk and some shiny black dress boots, you could easily pass for “owner of a ghost town”, “edgy science fiction writer” (switch to mirror sunglasses), or “porno producer”. In all cases you can keep stocking cap (aka ‘chill chaser’.

Ok, I'm a retired 70 year old woman with a few disabilities. I'm sure these imperfections would provide entertainment; Nobody can walk with a limp and fall down like I can, any openings? Where were you when I was younger, you are having so much fun and helping so many people by providing a purpose. Thank you.

You 100% look like a recharged man!! I've seen job sites that didn't click as well as you guys did! Heavy D and crew, your volunteers and yourself really meshed and kicked some mountain butt!
I worked in concrete for a few years, doing large municipal water tanks and we poured everything from 25 to 300 yards - all 5 miles from a mixing plant! You all accomplished one HELL of a lot! 80 yards is serious if you're NEAR a main road with only a little gravel and a few obstacles! You should be well-chuffed with how much was completed!
    Well done!

I have become hooked on your channel and one of the most awesome things is to watch you bring people together for a greater good. In our current times it seems that only the negative is emphasized and it is so disheartening. Brent, you have accomplished so much in such a short time! The commitment and bravery of yourself and others is an inspiration to everyone! During the videos when you and Johnny explore those rickety old mines, I'm pretty much holding my breath during most of them. I haven't caught up to current episodes yet. I wanted to see the progress from the beginning! Stay safe and keep following your dreams!
P.S. I am a 70-year-old woman... just to let you know that your story can attract all ages. :) Wabi-sabi !!

Good gosh Brent.. the amount of good folks willing to come and help out is just so tremendous! They come and do the work tearing down old structures that are going to become a great hotel in Cerro Gordo.. true good spirits Brent!
