I have been unable to lose weight since I was diagnosed 15 years ago, and it's hard to keep my replacement hormone levels optimal. Lots of Hashi's symptoms for years. Been on replacement hormones for 14 years.

My thyroid atrophied years ago yet my TPOs and anti-thyroid antibodies are still high. I have pain on the left side of my neck. My TSH is going up and down like a yoyo and I have ongoing cardiac tachycardia. Taking T4 for 40 years.

I was diagnosed at age 25 with hypothyroidism after giving birth to my daughter. For years, I have suffered with symptoms despite being on medication.. I recently had an ultrasound on my thyroid gland by a specialist that I requested. He said my thyroid gland has shriveled up and used the word atrophy. I have never been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s. I will take this information to my general doctor. I am 52 years old and I am still not feeling well. Thank you for this video!

If you have thyroid atrophy, and this means that the thyroid is no longer under attack by antibodies, and you no longer show thyroid antibodies, it doesn't mean you're necessarily out of hot water. Your body can start directing antibodies at other tissues in the body. Some Hashimoto's patients develop lupus and/or other autoimmune disorders when the thyroid is removed or atrophies.

    • @drwestinchilds
      @drwestinchilds  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It could but I'm not sure that I agree that those things are related.

@@drwestinchilds It would be very helpful if you would briefly explain why you don’t agree because I have read that the autoimmune condition will remain even if the thyroid is completely atrophied or removed. Help us with more complete answers instead of giving answers that only provoke more confusion! Thank you ...

It makes sense to me. So why isn’t treatment at least partially aimed in addition to replacing thyroid hormones, at harnessing the out of control immune system response? I’m not a doctor lol. It’s just something I’ve always wondered because my sister has juvenile arthritis (another autoimmune disorder) which is treated with meds to lower her immune system. She’s also included dietary restrictions she’s researched which are supposed to help.

I was diagnosed by my family physician 9 yrs ago, 38 yrs old, as stage 7. My antibodies were 1000+. No family history. It took a yr to find my new functioning normal. 2 yrs ago my antibodies were tested again and they were around 400. I changed my diet over this time but I'm still symptomatic. Stress affects me terrible!! I have asked about increasing my dosage amt but my internist doesn't think it's necessary...so I try and carry on the best I can. Thank you for all you do to bring attention to this disease!

Thank you so much for this explanation. Why is it none of my doctors, PCP nor Endocrinologists explained anything about my Hashimoto's Disease? My PCP put me on thyroid meds about 25 years ago just stating you need this medicine because your labs indicate thryroid problems. Then the endocrinologists just took tests but never offered any advice - ever - even when I asked about how could I lose weight. She only offered the food program she sells. I stopped going to her and now just have my PCP provide the medicine.
I do not even recognize who I am anymore. I'm now 68 with end stage Hashimoto's disease and weigh 220 pounds. I now have HBP, am obese, have AFIB and really disgusted. I want to lose weight. I bought a book about Hashimoto's and the endo dr. said pay no attention - book authors are just trying to make money, but there she was offering me a buy-in to her food program.

I fully empathise with your position of being kept in the dark as I have this experience also.
I think you must look at contacting another practitioner and seek the relevant blood tests you need, not only for your thyroid but any other conditions, you need to be pushy and insist. You are in your Golden Years and you need to enjoy your time and you need to get back on track to enjoy those years. Please don't delay and allow your former practitioners and endo to keep you in the dark, get out there, take the bull by its horns, get the tests you need and any medicine adjustments to your dose. Ask, ask and ask and ask more to get the information you need. The clock never stops ticking so don't delay. Good Luck 👍

Have doctors specifically checked you for Hashimoto's, checking all the correct hormone levels (T3, T4, and not just TSH) and checking for thyroid antibodies. I know some people who most likely have Hashimoto's but their doctors won't test for it and just label them "hypothyroid" when there is so much more going on inside their bodies than just that.

My thyroid gland has disappeared and my Endocrinologist tells me she's never seen one that far gone. All that remains is a benign nodule above where the left side used to be. I lost 29 pounds 2 years ago on Whole30 and have regained about 7 pounds. My weight loss threw me into hyperthyroid and a pcp put me on a much lower dose of levothyroxine, by the time I got to a different doctor, my thyroid numbers were way off and it has taken some time to get them back in normal range (but just barely). I go back in May but meanwhile, I am having trouble with dieting and losing weight. It was so easy before but now I'm struggling.

I'm in late stage Hashimotos dx over 20 yrs ago. After being diagnosed with Graves disease and opting not to kill the gland with radio active iodine. My last thyroid scan showed complete atrophy but my antithyroid antibodies are still elevated and now I have slightly elevated ALT not to mention I was diagnosed with Celiac disease approximately 10 yrs after my diagnosis of Graves. I heard one autoimmune disease will always get a sister disease 🤷‍♀️ I asked my doctor if an thyroid ectomy would help lower my antibodies & my chronic symbol. He said No so my journey goes on I juice I try my best to eat keto I'm completely gluten free take tons of Dr recommended supplements & herbs plus a super expensive preobiotic I drink only water and 1 cup of organic coffee per day. I walk to exercise a brisk Incline decline lap around my foothill neighborhood 45 minutes a few days a week. Can't loose these 20lbs not sure where they came from God help me this is extremely frustrating 😂

My daughter was diagnosed with Hasimotos since she was about 10 years old, she is thirty five. We have done everything we could afford and she still is , from whole food allergy free nutrition, local in our State functional medication, regenerative medication and so much more that she can share better than I because she is an adult. But so far, I think everything I have seen on your you tubes. Just recently she got a ultra sound back and now has three nodules instead of two and the doctor said it looks like there is atrophy, and we are beyond concerned. Please tell us there is some way we can reverse and bring back or halt whatever atrophy has occurred. I just sent her Dr. Guptas consultation website and hoping to God there is a way to stop this, she does not want to lose her thyroid or live dependant on the medication and where she can not reverse the symptoms. Please assist if possible, or tell me where I should go to help her.

My glands had nodules on them and they disappeared along with more than 50% of my thyroid. It's been awful with the hypertension and the chronic fatigue. Will I ever ne normal again? Revealing. I am entering my 25th year with thyroid disease (Hashimoto's found later and antibodies are 66.6 currently). In late November 2019, I was found to have one side of my gland atrophied. In 2020 and 2019 went into very quick hyper mode to the need of seeing a cardiologist. I did have mild PAC found while wearing a monitor. With medication change, it went away. However, then went quickly back to flagged hypo levels. Trying two levels of meds there with a lab six weeks later. Will get level and be monitored every 3 months. I have lost at least 10 lbs this past year without really trying. Do not need to lose it really. Had gut issues as well.

Dr. Childs, I have been having thyroid problems for many years but doctors told me I could not take medication because my condition was still in its subclinical phase. In 2015 an ultrasound revealed that my thyroid had been swollen (Hashimoto), and that the Hashimoto thyroidytis had derived into hipothyroidism. My question is: Is that possible? Or once the Thyroid swells there is no reverse gear? A recent blood test (TSH and T4 only) revealed that I am no longer a subclinical patient. My doctor prescribed 50 mcg. of levothyroxine. Watching your videos I understand that feeling my old self is not going yo be that easy. The ultrasound detected a tiny nodule which could be cancerous but my doctor told me that they cannot do anything right now because it is too small. He is going to monitor its development throughout the present year. I feel worried and with no one around who could help me. Not even my doctor. I thank you very much for your effort to help people. I wonder if you see patients on line. I would be grateful if you answered. Have a wonderful day.

I had to start seeing a Endocrinologist for my thyroid care. This doctor went to medical school in India. She is so ignorant and stubborn! BUT it not really that different that how they are trained in United States...I have found that most Endocrinologists’ skills and knowledge is in the dinosaur age! They RARELY know how to treat thyroid properly or even worse, they seem completely indifferent to individual patients needs- they “treat your labs” and not you! As far as your reference to India. "Unchecked" and untreated Hashimoto's leads to far more than weight gain. Generally, it leads to premature hardening of the arteries, heart disease, and eventually slipping into a (myxedema) coma and dying (if a fatal heart attack doesn't strike first).
