Why nothing is cooler than the BMPCC OG

  • Here’s a really quick look at the original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, which I have grown to really adore. While it’s limited in a lot of ways, I also think it’s an amazing tool for filmmaking. It’s even more impressive that it’s over a decade old at this point. So what’s the low light footage like? Is the HD sharp enough or do you need 4k? How’s the color science? How long do the batteries last? Grab a drink and relax, I’ll try my best to answer. Thanks for watching, I appreciate ya.

    This is the best color science Blackmagic ever had. I shot an entire feature on this sensor and grading the prores files is simply wonderful. You don't have to change the WB all the time and you can easily treated like a film camera where you set it and forget it. This and the micro cinema camera with their Fairchild sensor are like miniature Alexas.

    I'm so happy with how much love many people have for this camera. I got mine during a crazy one-day sale Blackmagic had where it was 50% off. Been using it ever since 2013 and have shot so many projects on it. I've been meaning to upgrade, but each time I shoot something new on it, I seem to forget the desire.

    I owned one of these cameras years ago. I used it on a few projects. It had the best color science, the sensor was awesome, and it was almost impossible to not get a fantastic image out of that tiny package. As a professional Gaffer, It was a real pleasure to work with.

    I bought BMPCC OG last week and still equipping it with lenses and other accessories. I love the footage from this camera since the first time I saw it in YT and want to shoot with this little beast ... today I already have it. It's amazing camera, and yes - shooting is really hard and need practice, but when done right the results are amazing and is a joy to edit and color grade the footage from this camera. When it first came out there was a long technical discussion of why you should just leave it at its native 800 iso and adjust in post. I forget the details but they remain somewhere in old posts on the forum.

    Back in 2012 this was my dream camera in high school. Im lucky enough to have one now completely kitted out the tilta cage metabones speedbooster and I have a vast vintage lens collection. This camera is so fun to use, the only camera I think is better is the digitial bolex witch I have also shot many times but thats an unattainable camera. These are some of the only digital cameras worth owning imo. The rest i own is film cameras for anything actually serious... but the bmpcc still holds a special place in my heart. If it would have had autofocus or even just a baby amount of stabbleization it probably would have been the best prosumer digital camera created. To anyone even remotely interested in getting one go buy it now they are getting very rare and will start being very hard to find soon.

    I owned one of these for a month then ended up returning it. My issue with it was the battery life. I would fully charge it at 100 percent and then it would drop to 40 percent within a few minutes of recording. I also had a backup battery that would do the same. Image looked good. I now use a Panasonic Lumix G7 and it's my favorite film camera.

    I've thought about making this exact video before. But you did a beautiful job covering the main points and considerations. I will be posting links to this from here on out. I would add a small tip that there is a program called 'slim raw'. A single $65 purchase (last I looked), no licenses. And it can batch compress CDNG with virtually no loss in quality. Really helps with the file sizes. You can still use the high light recovery and everything in Resolve.

    I would recommend checking out an OG micro camera. Same sensor, but supports 60FPS and some compressed DNG options to save storage. Additionally it used canon EF batteries that last longer, and with a cheap adapter you can adapt to larger LP on the back. And it has no crap screen so you can add a small one on top (and possibly power from out the LP battery on the back) and little side handle and it's still quite small, though boxy for actual pocket use.

    One day, 10 years ago, I woke up and there was a 50% sale on this camera. I immediately bought one with a metabones adapter. I have an A7 IV now, but the image from BMPCC still looks better to me. The only issue is the noise. When you use this with the adapter and a 1.8 lens, the noise is not that big of a problem, but obviously it's not even close to A7 IV. And with all the utility features you get on A7 IV, it's no longer worth using this camera for client work, but I still think the image quality you get from this thing is absoutely next level.

Personally I’d slightly prefer the pocket cause of the mft mount and much smaller size of the camera lol but I bought the bmcc really cheap untested and got lucky. Love the video man!
    We run the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera as our camera for narrative filmmaking and we’ve been incredible happy with it.
    All rigged out with the SLR Magic APO Microprimes (and the .58 EF Metabones Speedbooster) and we are in love with the images we are getting.
    Also, OLPF from Rawlite to fix the moire problem. It’s a little pricey at $350, but necessary if not mandatory if you’re using the camera in any real way.
    Edit; the advantage of the BMMCC is having Raw 3:1, full size HDMI, 60 fps, reduced rolling shutter, and a fan for cooling in case you didn’t know

Not a lot of 3" camera monitors out there. I really overlooked my Blackmagic pocket because in comparison it was kind of janky and nobody wanted the workflow but it was also SOOOO cheap and SOOOO capable - I shot a couple of small low/no-budget projects with it and I kind of wish I still had it or used it more because the image was really nice

    0:50 - I've bought a used X-T3 with the original battery. The camera did came from 2018 from it's pre-owner. And I can shoot ~300 RAFs without recharging on this single accumulator. 5+ years! :) It wasn't sitting in a box these years. Recently I was shooting in cold conditions (with a special warm soft case) and I've shoot for about 1.5 hours with small pauses. Then I've got the battery drained out.
    And it's a well known weakness of Fujifilm older (before X-T5, X-S20 models) cameras. I'll buy few bats from Ali soon (after their NY). Actually I was almost got ran out of ideas to that moment when my battery did sucked out. I've missed few good shots though!

    For this camera its best to buy a dummy battery that can connect to an external power bank through usb-c so you'll have all day life and it stays small
    Also if the old BMDfilm has limited dynamic range sort of the old Vlog-L and my old 2.55k has actually capable of capturing more than display with bmdfilm.
    So for best results start of with p3-d60 and linear as the gamma. you can cut then to either aces, DaVinci wg or directly to rec.709 if you like. Best to. work with linear gamma when it comes to raw instead of feeding the nle a logarithmic image.

    I think the main reason this camera looks the way it does is due to the sensor literally being Super16 size. The physics just worked out and I think BM kind of got lucky. They should bring in a similar form factor in 4k. Hard to believe they still call the 6k "Pocket Cinema". You need a damn forklift for that thing.

The power management on mine has gone haywire and it only stays on for random amounts of time, usually under 5 minutes. On eBay they seem to cost the same as they did new. Getting another old camera with broken power management is a risk. And yet I've got a tiny 20mm anamorphic lens that doesn't fit anything else, and a collapsible loupe which they don't make anymore. It was a perfect rig that fit in my pocket😭

    Just picked one up this year....for the 2nd time. I'm surprised by how great the image looks at 1600. I was expecting a lot more noise but it doesn't bother me at all. The gh5, for example, I never push past 2000 and imo the noise at 2000 on that camera is far worse than the noise patterns you get here at 1600. It's pretty incredible what they did with such a tiny sensor and the fact that you can pick one up for about $500 these days is a bonkers good deal

    Still a great cam for personal projects or having fun. Pretty unusable on professional jobs as you need a monitor for critical focus and that micro HDMI is just on its way out at any point. I had the BM Micro but could never find compatible cards for it lol.

    The color science is very good in daylight balanced scenes but pretty abysmal in tungsten lighting. That is because although you can change white balance, the color science does not update for the different illuminants like more professional/modern cameras, this camera only has daylight color science. You will see in tungsten lighting that warm tones are a little pink and greens are desaturated. Pink tones are ok for very light skin but kinda funky for darker skin.
    The blue channel is also super starved of light in tungsten balanced scenes and it makes the colors much noisier.

    • @realChannelZ
      @realChannelZ 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I discovered that same issue when filming indoors and using tungsten lights. Drastically reduced the image quality. Could never get it fixed in post, either.

    • @Tony__S
      @Tony__S 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@realChannelZ If you shoot raw, the Gen 4 color science can be selected in resolve and that does have color science for tungsten lighting. Gen 4 has issues with very saturated colors though, but I find having working color science more important since its much easier to fix saturated colors.

    This camera represents an ethos that has sadly been abandoned by camera manufacturers, which is playful portable cinema. The "Pocket" branding transformed from something fun and interesting into boring budget studio cameras. They don't fit in your pocket, and they really need to be rigged up with stabilizers and follow focuses to be fully functional.
    I really wish that Blackmagic would revisit this pocket concept. Give it IBIS and better battery life and I'm all in, even if it's just 1080p. Good AF would be a plus but I could live without. I want a BMPCC mkii!
