    The way I interpret this song (which I think most swifties will agree) this song in my opinion is about her career, and the way women in the music industry (and Hollywood in general) only have this certain level fame until they start aging. Taylor talks about this in her Miss. Americana documentary about how female artists have to keep reinventing themselves to keep people entertained (will you still want me when I’m nothing new), and how at the end the day eventually a newer younger female artist will come and the whole cycle will start over again (as shown in the bridge of the song) “I know someday I’ll meet her, it’s a fever dream” “the kind of radiance you only have at seventeen” anyways sorry for the long comment lol

    "From the vault" is a thing Taylor does with the rerelease of an album (Taylor's Version). She adds about 5 songs that didn't make the original album, so the fans have more than just rerecording of familiar songs.
    The ten-minute version of all to well is also a vault track!

  • @elizajoisreading
    @elizajoisreading 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +50

    Vault tracks are unreleased songs Taylor wrote at the time of the original album (that she is now re-recording). So this song was written in March 2012. Phoebe was finishing high school at the time (at an arts high school in LA). She started playing guitar in middle school and was already writing/performing by this time, although not with Taylor. So it’s interesting to think of Phoebe as the girl about to break out as Taylor was originally writing this song and then featuring on the recording of the song 8 years later. They represent 2 women in a never-ending cycle of young women churned out by the music industry who worry about “aging out.”

    The red vault is so full of treasures! This particular track was probably kept off the record because Taylor had never talked about drinking up until this point. Her old label seemed very intentional about keeping her music free of references to sex and alcohol up until she was like 25! Thankfully now we get it all 🤣🙌

And this is one of the vaults that was really loved by the fans- among the other vaults that came along with this re-recording. Better Man, a song she wrote- but another band decided to take is also on Red TV- def recommend you guys listen to that song. Fans went nuts when Taylor released it with her singing it :)

    You guys should absolutely look at the "I Know the End" music video by Phoebe Bridgers. She's amazing. When I'm looking for comfort and calm for my soul, I go to Phoebe's music. Her voice is captivating, her songwriting is incredible, and the instrumentals in her songs are just epic. I found her by accident last year, and I have to say, I'm 53 years old, and no one has excited and inspired me like she does in a LONG time. She's made me want to learn the guitar just so I can play "Scott Street" by her. I so look forward to you guys' reactions. This song is beautiful but so sad. It breaks my heart every time I listen to it. I hate that Taylor and Phoebe were already worrying at such a young age (22 years old mentioned in the lyrics) of being replaced by the next up and coming new pop star coming up behind them. Show business can really suck!

    I think that this song was on the vault for similar reasons to Castles Crumbling off of Speak Now TV… she’s fearing being out of the limelight and everything she’s built for herself fading into ambiguity, and it was maybe cut because it was deemed too morose for her fan base at the time. Or maybe it just felt too vulnerable. “I’ve had too much to drink tonight” probably wasn’t the image her team wanted for her at the time, even though it’s so real.
    She has a song called The Lucky One on Red that is a pop-ier commentary on similar themes so I think they opted for that track to be on the original studio album.

      We are probably wrong….just letting you know what we are hearing

    • @emmavink
      @emmavink 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @@TAHBofficialI don't think you are wrong at all. This version with Phoebe was rerecorded and produced newly by Aaron Dessner in 2021. I am almost sure they would have considered some of Phoebe's inspirations in the production as well.
      People don't understand that many of these vault tracks were never fully written or even fully demo'ed songs. Taylor has said the vault tracks can be anything to fully finished and recorded demo tracks to barely more than voice notes she had made for songs at the time.
      Also, there is a good bit of overlap between artists that Taylor likes/has worked with and artists who claim Elliott Smith as an inspiration.
      I am thinking specifically of Danielle Haim from the band Haim who not only featured on No Body, No Crime from Swift's Evermore album, but Taylor and the band/sisters have been friends for well over a decade now.
      Taylor also had Beabadoobee who cites Smith as an inspiration open for her on a few of her US stops for the Eras Tour.
      So yeah, it wouldn't surprise me at all to hear influences like Elliott Smith peppered throughout many of the more indie inspired Swift songs rerecorded or recorded between 2020-2022 🤷‍♀️

    • @emmavink
      @emmavink 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, but the song absolutely didn't have Aaron's production on it until they arranged and recorded this version in late 2021 🤷‍♀️ so it's definitely not going to be the exact same song that she wrote in 2012.

    • @musicfangirl7403
      @musicfangirl7403 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yes to all of this! People don't always understand songwriting or the process. While I do think Taylor writes nearly everything in her catalog, these collaborations are different. She may have had the whisper of an idea and then fleshed it out with Phoebe. Also who is to say that Taylor herself is not an Elliott Smith fan?!? She would certainly recognize his genius. .

    Funnily enough, I could see getting an Elliott Smith vibe on some level though it’s apparently power of suggestion unless Taylor was really vibing with his sound when she wrote this as a 22 year old. Very appropriate that she got Phoebe to sing this with her, but Phoebe didn’t have any hand in the writing.
    Incredible that Taylor was thinking about the industry’s rush to replace women artists and articulated it this beautifully at 22. Likely that Big Machine kept it off the original Red because they thought it was too somber and worried how a more sexist 2012 culture would receive it. Terrible that whole masters debacle happened at all, but imagine if we’d never heard any of Taylor’s from the vault songs.

    pretty much spot on with the guess of what from the vault means. Nothing new was written back when she was originally writing the red album but she chose not to include it. all the Taylor's versions of the albums that she's re-releasing have a vault containing all those originally cut songs. now that she is making the executive decisions again with everything she's adding all the extra songs. the red vault has 10 songs and every single one of them is incredible. i honestly can't believe she hid this one from us for so long because i think it's one of her best. it's heartwrenching, especially when you're able to relate to it

  • @elizabethjulia20
    @elizabethjulia20 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I honestly think she only kept this in the vault because of how particularly vulnerable it was. Red is her only true breakup album, it's all heartbreak and vulnerability... but in terms of her career she seemed like she was on top (think "I knew you were trouble" "we are never getting back together" "22" "all too well"), it would've seemed ludicrous and fuelled the narrative that she would "play the victim" - something she was constantly accused of at the time (from kanye, to breakups, to white privilege, to acting surprised at any awards etc.). I think a song like this portrays how fragile she felt her sucess was and how much the media's constant slut shaming and the ay young women are treated in the industry truly affected her. In a way I think she made the right choice, if you guys ever checkout "The Lucky One" I think it was a more tongue and cheek way of her getting across that she relates to old hollywood celebs who left it all behind, that the fame wasn't everything it was all cracked up to be. BUT thankfully with the vault now we have it, and with retrospect I think the song comes across even more vulnerable regarding the way we all feeling transitioning into early adulthood!

      I know huh.
      My assumption is because it was originally written for Red…which was what…2012?
      …so Taylor was transitioning out of her young granny/Sunday school teacher phase and newly in her 2010’s hipster twee/1945 nautical New England Barbie/red lip, classic, (somewhat prude, some may say) phase.
      I honestly think that this song stayed in the vault because at that point, Taylor wasn’t going to admit to the general public that she “had too much to drink tonight” and was inarguably depressed…or that she was preoccupied with being right at the edge of the cliff and thinking her career was nearing its end. Like… realistically the general public probably wouldn’t have had the capacity to empathize with her at that point. She was, from our perspective, at the height of her career (little did we know).
      I’m glad it stayed in the vault though, because it just makes so much more sense to me coming from superstar Taylor Swift on a re-recording in 2021 of her album from 2012. Had it been on Red in 2012, I think it would have been somewhat premature.

      @@TAHBofficialnah y’all were right to lean hard on the reference to Elliot Smith and teach the swifties that even Taylor has influences. 🫶🏻

      if you think taylor isn’t influenced by other artists and people cannot have discussions about her art and other’s art on their own channel then you may be in a cult. 🤷‍♀️

    Let’s talk about a man’s influence on a song about girl/women hood… 😩

      Musical influence. Nothing to do with the content of the song.

    although i love this song because i love Phoebe, it's not really the most appropriate collab Taylor could have gotten for this vault record because Phoebe is not wanting to be the next pop girl. she is really more an indie darling with a hopefully more interesting career ahead of her. this should have been Olivia Rodrigo, if it was gonna be anybody, i think we all know that. but Taylor is very strategic about her collabs and Olivia, who is actually gunning to be the next it pop girlie, was never gonna get a shine from her

      This is absolute BS. If you actually LISTENED to Olivia's music, you'd easily hear that she is FAR more inspired and geared towards the pop punk/pop rock sound than merely gunning to be the "new pop girlie".
      There is over enough space for ALL OF THESE WOMEN in the industry. Stop pitting them against each other.
      Stop pandering to TOXIC, completely fictional, tabloid BS. NONE of it is true. You see all these women talking about each other and supporting each other in actual interviews and physically on stages and at music awards.
      99% of the time a tabloid source claims a "feud" between any female artists, it's a lie.
      Use your rational mind. If the first paragraph uses words like alleged, rumoured, appears, seems like, suggested, and many more, it's a straight out lie.
      Stop promoting this toxic BS. Please.
