Let's Play per se is old hat; but being a "professional" LPer and having that be a legitimate threat to cable TV numbers is still pretty new.

Much of the audience for TV stations often have higher age groups, since the people who grew up with TV and no internet still watch it. There is a better chance they don't know about TH-cam stuff. Even if the audience does know, the newscasters don't want to run the risk of someone being confused and left out.
No they want to down play youtubers as they, as the old media, are going to be out of a job a few years down the line being replaced by the new media. It is 100% in there best interest to downplay all coverage of the new media.
Just imagine the news stations when they stumbled on the Sonic Fanfiction episodes. I bet the people at the news stations learned a lot about their employees that day. Whether they laughed or repulsed by it (and there will be prudes that would be) would say a lot about their character and their sense of humor. Obviously, the News station would NEVER put clips from those episodes on the air, but still funny.

If you know how the algorithm works best, you can make videos to suit that, but it’s luck getting your video actually picked up and sent around, ie, people commenting and liking boosting the video. When you do go viral out of pure dumb luck, then you actually need to think like a business person to keep that exposure alive

PolarPoop I mean… it's kind of both. TH-camrs are revolutionary because they're making themselves famous by being themselves and having fun. No one is "discovering" them, they don't have to put on an act, they don't have to be hand-selected out of hundreds of people going after the same role, they don't need to have dozens of people working to put them in the public eye. TH-camrs are establishing businesses and brands by being themselves. That's part of why this stuff is so cool. Arin created a business, made the biggest paycheck of his life, and bought a car by playing video games and cracking jokes with the people closest to him. That's kind of amazing.

have to agree with everyone on how patronizing this is. What would piss me off most if I had agreed to do this interview is "they're making boatloads of money" "so much money" They only use Arin's soundbite about money, and then say "The game grumps have nothing to be grumpy about". Fuck that, there's two sides to every coin, and any grumps fan has heard all about some of the downsides of their lifestyle and career, for one thing losing a LOT of personal privacy. I hoped they'd focus on that side of being the huge internet stars they are.
Yeah, but let's face it, this is the news we are talking about, they won't cover everything, only the things that sell.
EDIT: I'm honestly waiting for people to be like: "These people sound like absolute dicks!" and then watch a few episodes and check out some non-gameplay content, where they get real and speak the truth. They'd be like "Hey these people are pretty cool" and realize they've been lied to.

They do this because even though people like us know about Game Grumps and what they're about, people in in this type of audience that these News shows cater to don't know them, and still see TH-cam as something pointless and unproductive. This is news to a lot of people that don't use the internet for entertainment (i.e. elderly, middle age, sometimes youth)

Local news everywhere is so behind on everything. This has been happening for years.
I found it weird how they focused so much on the money and not on the community aspect of the medium which is kinda the foundation of TH-cam.

I think it's more or less the make it easier to understand for those at home who don't know about this type of content on TH-cam. Like adults.

Much of the audience for TV stations often have higher age groups, since the people who grew up with TV and no internet still watch it. There is a better chance they don't know about TH-cam stuff. Even if the audience does know, the newscasters don't want to run the risk of someone being confused and left out.
No they want to down play youtubers as they, as the old media, are going to be out of a job a few years down the line being replaced by the new media. It is 100% in there best interest to downplay all coverage of the new media.
