I was ticketed 3 times in Chiangmai for driving a motorcycle without a license. The fine was $15 each time. If you get caught within 3days of getting a ticket, you don’t have to pay again. It’s basically a 3 day grace period.

I just came back from there what I did is borrow my friend's International license from Germany stuck a passport photo on his picture and went to a copy shop to have it photoshopped they made me a beautiful copy for 6 bucks. Same thing in South Africa, you don't need an international driver's license to rent a car. In Thailand the scooter rental places only ask for your passport to hold against damages and if you don't leave a passport then you have to leave a cash deposit. The kid got scammed by the police and probably paid them money which he left out or he didn't pay them the bribe and got the ticket. You have to be aware of how things work in a foreign country before otherwise you'll being taken advantage of.
