Hi Paul! After spending a whole month in Thailand last November, I've noticed that I've become a person that I like more. I'm a more patient, more trusting, and more tolerant person. I was not like this before leaving for Thailand. Living in the States, you're always on the defensive due to tension caused by increasing crime, racism, fear of terrorism, religious intolerance, Karen-ism, divisive political party affiliations, abortion issues, feminism, mass shootings, illegal immigration issues, issues with sexual orientation, the disparity between the wealthy and poor...etc. The list goes on and on! Our news channels are highly biased, depending on which channel you watch, CNN or FOX NEWS! Speaking of mass shootings, last May during Memorial Day weekend, I was involved in a mass shooter scare at my local mall in Southern California! I was at a retail store inside the mall when I noticed everyone running in a panic out the mall exit. I was told by an employee that there was a report of a shooter inside the mall and we all had to hide in the back storeroom. While hiding and in fear for my life, I solidified my plan of moving to Thailand in a few years! Later, it turned out to be a false alarm but this was the NEW NORMAL in the US. Our divisive government will never pass any sensible gun laws to prevent gun violence in the US, and these incidents will just get worse with time. I know there was a shooter at Siam Paragon recently but an incident like this is rare in Thailand, whereas, shootings in the US are common occurrences. I am now desensitized to mass shootings in the US because they have become so common. Anyway, I agree with you 1000% and I am looking forward to my return in October 2024!

I understand what you are saying about Thai women. I have been with a Thai woman for 5 years, we were married last year and have been married for 15 months. My wife, Mena, does take excellent care of me and I her. We built a house together in Eastern Thailand but we travel to beautiful beach town locations. Beach towns such as in Phuket, Koh Samui, Hua Hin, and Boracay a few hours away in the Philippines. Because we own our home and paid for it 100%, we only pay electricity, and water. So, we can save enough money to travel. I am a 100% disabled US Air Force Veteran, who retired from a long management history in healthcare. My wife is a University graduate who taught school before Covid shut her school down. She comes from a long line of farmers and her family’s farm and home is near to us. I love Thailand.
Moreover, I feel safety is important and I never felt that safe in the USA. You realize I am sure, the political climate in the USA has begun to separate people in so many ways and seems to have intensified in recent years. I always feel safe in Thailand. I find the healthcare in Thailand is second to none. Being a Buddhist myself, I find Thais kind, respectful, happy, and very giving.

I'm moving back to Cambodia for pretty much all the same reasons. I like your insights on the culture. I never saw anything in a Buddhist text about destroying non-believers or any saved vs unsaved kind of thing. It's like we're all in the same boat, so let's make the ride easier for all of us. The friendliness and lack of toxicity and political and social angst makes SE Asia so much nicer to live in than the west. I'm glad you're having a good life in Thailand!

The narrative you just espoused has nothing to do with reality. Buddhists definitely have a saved vs unsaved distinction, and in that paradigm, the vast majority of souls will never be able to escape the cycle of suffering, only the very few enlightened Buddhas are able to escape out of the cycle and enter into nirvana. Also, the only religion that says to destroy unbelievers is Islam, which is not a mainstream religion in the US; to make that assertion against Christianity is plainly false and amounts to slander.
Also, there are a lot of mean and dangerous people in SE Asia as well, and there is plenty of political angst, and even social angst with different ethnic groups fighting literal wars against one another. I get you're trying to paint a rosy picture for your potential future, but be realistic.

    • @Ned88Man

    • @cambodiyeah1
      @cambodiyeah1 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@dr.j5642 When I say saved vs unsaved, I mean the Christian notion of either you're saved or you burn in hell. Continuing the cycle isn't quite the same thing. There are plenty of passages in the Bible about destroying unbelievers, especially in Deuteronomy.
The political angst I refer to is people constantly bickering over politics which doesn't happen because it's not really allowed. While it's an unfortunate situation, it still results in a less toxic political culture in public Khmer society than exists in America. As a foreigner, I know I have the privilege of being shielded from the bulk of political situations in Cambodia, however, the distinction remains.

Wow!!! You speak very highly of Thailand. I do agree with the fact (pretty sure it's provable) that it is safer than the US overall. The food is also tasty without cutting your life short by a decade if you eat authentic Thai and avoid constantly eating coconut oil, stir-fries, and obvious chunks animal fat. Surprisingly, for a small country slightly smaller than Texas and France, Thailand's geography is more than adequately diverse. There's mountains up north, central plains and swamp land, plateau flatlands and mountains to the northeast, and prestine beaches 'til your hearts content to the south. Cultural differences are also very distinct between regions if you have keen eyes and ears. It is reflected in language tonations and speed of speech, different wordings, beliefs and behaviors, and foods. Probably one of the best part of Thailand is its central location in S.E. Asia. Traveling to surrounding S.E. Asian countries, and even China is cheap and easy (plane and soon bullet train). Honestly, when I was doing my college degree in Texas, I didn't expect Thailand (or S.E. Asia) to come this far in development. However, when my Vietnamese friend asked me whether I was going to take up a job in Texas after I finished my degree through an internship program like he did, I said no because I thought I'd be happier living long-term back home. I don't regret it, although I must admit alot of differences require quite a bit of adjustment, which sometimes is not too comfortable (especially if you've gotten use to the ways in the West already). Anyway, Thailand and I believe most of S.E. Asia is the gem of Asia in terms of value living and I have absolutely no regrets about my life here. So I totally understand where you're coming from. Keep the vids coming and glad you're enjoying life in Bangkok too 😁😁.

Some Farangs have developed a bad attitude about the Thai women they meet in the tourist areas.
They to seem to extrapolate onto all Thai women their negativity they have about freelancers and for-profit girlfriends
The above is a very distorted perspective as most Thai- Buddhists women are loving and caring to their man.

lol. How true. Yes, Thailand is roughly 50% cheaper but he didn't say anything about wages. First, you can't work except for remote work and there is the timezone differences. I guess, if you are financially secured or have an online business then it's not a problem. Also, the food is cheaper because the quality is lower. Who wants to eat hot noodle soup in a plastic bowl? The leached chemicals can't be good for you. The cheapest ingredients are used like vegetable/seed oils.

To be more accurate, I’d say for a 1 bedroom condo to rent in BKK will be $800-$1000 a month. Of course a 34sq meter studio condo would be 509 baht. A lot of factors to consider when renting a place. Be sure it’s walking distance to the BTS and the complex doesn’t rent out to short term renters on holiday ( Airbnb) . And my grocery bill is half of what it would be in the States . I worked in Thailand for 15 years, now retired four years in a quiet province city which is a lot cheaper and peaceful than Bangkok.

🤣That's not how America is like at all. Asians are the best educated, highest paid and least discriminated race in the US. For example 2nd generation Asian Americans typically live anywhere they want - even the most elitist WASP neighborhoods have Asian Americans living there whereas other minorities are kept out. None of my American friends I grew up with would ever treat me as an "outsider". You would only really be treated that way if you have a heavy foreign accent. What you describe is more the experience of an Asian person who was raised in Asia but moved to the US as an adult, not an Asian American born and raised in America. Also, being Asian looking meaning nothing in Asia once you open your mouth and speak with an American accent - automatically you will be rejected as a local.

I live in NY City and have been to Thailand many times. I visit Thailand twice a year and stay as long as my visa will allow each time. I couldn’t agree with you more about Thailand. NYC and the U.S. has become a nightmare. Everyday I’m trying to think of ways to get out and move to Thailand. Everything you mentioned in this video about NY is true, the costs, the competitively mean people, the street crime, the taxes and government - for a start - it is a horrible place to live. Don’t get me wrong, there was I time when I wished I had five lives to do all the great things I wanted to do in NY, but no more.
There’s a saying I’ve heard awhile ago and the longer I live, the more true it is…
_“In Thailand you are free, except to criticize the king; in America, you can criticize the president all you want, but you are not free to do anything else.”_
By now I know both places enough to know how true this has become. Americans don’t know it yet, but they are the frog in the boiling water. They proclaim their “freedom” left, right, & center, but they are not free.
I love Thailand. I love the kind people, I love the great food, I love the arts & culture, I love the morality, and I love the aesthetic. I only hope to someday let the wonderful Thai people know how lucky they really are.

95 F in December in Bangkok is a no go for me for not only Bangkok but most of southeast Asia--I like four distinct seasons although by late Winter and late Summer, I can't wait to jump into Spring and Fall. But to each their own. About women... I earn enough in America for my wife to sit home and cook, clean, laundry etc. It is not huge chores. In return, I take care of the often very tiring yard work and earn enough for us to live a comfortable middle-class life. There is less tension in the house now that she stopped working almost two years ago--she was always tired. She is very glad to be a house-wife and, while if she goes back to work it would be fine if she chooses to, it is fine right now as long as this arrangement goes on. When we go out and other women ask and she tells her situation they envy her. A woman and a man in their natural or preferred setting. Nothing wrong with that.

It's kind of a pity that TH-camrs - and I've watched dozens of videos broadly identical to this one - seem unable to embrace the place they're now living without shitting all over where they are from.
There are approximately 300,000 Thai nationals who have chosen to make the United States home and raise their families there. Perhaps they didn't get the memo on all the reasons Thailand is utopia and "The West" 🙄 sucks balls, perhaps they're all mentally ill or maybe, just maybe, there's a bit more nuance to this than you'll typically find in these sorts of videos.
I'm from Scotland but have chosen to make Asia my home for the past 20 years. Specifically Hong Kong and actually much as I love visiting Thailand I'm glad I chose to make a life here not there. But anyway I digress, the point I'd make is that I am happy I chose to make life here but I don't hate Scotland or think it is a bad place to live. I still love where I'm originally from and my brother has never left Edinburgh and has made a fantastic life for himself there
Maybe America is a uniquely terrible place ( although net migration figures don't seem to bare that out ) or maybe people perhaps have an overly negative view of it and perhaps an overly romanticised view of Thailand, especially if they've only recently moved there. Especially those who don't speak the language.
I mean at least one thing I feel you could say in favour of America, although I guess you won't, is that you can make a video about how much America sucks and title it "why you'll never go back" and obviously there's zero issue there should you there change your mind.
Make a viral video about all the reasons Thailand sucks and why you'd never go back, if that was to get picked up and amplified by local media then it's probably best you don't🙄😬.

    • @willsmith39
      @willsmith39 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@iPaulLeeMaybe I am being too critical, but if you look at the other comments they are overwhelming positive/ agreeing with every word you said, so hopefully there's still room for someone who maybe doesn't in terms of this particular video at least.
However I've subscribed so obviously there's other content you've put out I've enjoyed, for example I thought your interview with Chinni was really good as you asked frankly a lot of blunt questions that others would probably dance around and I found the answers really refreshing in being equally direct and honest.
And anyway it's not so much that I didn't enjoy this video as much as I have a different perspective maybe.
I'm quite a lot lot older than you ( I'm 51) and actually in addition to my 20 plus years in HK ( it's 22 actually this year) I was seconded with my first company ( I started my own company after that ) to both mainland China ( Shanghai) and Bangkok in the early 2000's. 18 months in China and almost 3 years in Thailand.
I loved both but Thailand was my favourite. But then I lived in a complete expat bubble at the time, I was 29, single and being paid in HKD ( so USD effectively given the peg) had a 2500 sq foot apartment to myself, a live in maid, club memberships and for a while I even had a friggin driver. So it wasn't real life and of course I had a completely hedonistic lifestyle when I wasn't working. If I tried that now I'd be dead in a month I think😂.
I retired in Hong Kong last year at 50. Apparently you're not supposed to do that, certainly not here, and other friends of mine who retired after decades in HK have moved to Thailand or Malaysia mostly.
Something I might do too, or we might stay here forever ( my missus is Canadian Chinese but HK born) . Anyway she's a lot younger than me and still working in IB so not in the near future.
Ok I've just told you my life story which you didn't ask for sorry 😂

I can't really imagine a much better comparison to make. From my limited experience with New York City, I can see the benefits he is describing in his video to a person who desires this type of big metropolitan lifestyle. Everything is dazzling when you're brand new , but living there long term is NOT the best investment for many reasons that you'll have to find out on your own . The most important thing to acknowledge is, that no matter who you are or how much money you spend, Thais would rather you NOT emigrate there . Also, malls are still huge in Asia for the same reason, as well as the absence of a cutthroat landlord class jacking up the rents. In the Divided States, malls got mauled to death.

Everyone will ADMIT it, but not OPENLY. This guy is not gonna OPENLY say that cause he's smart.

Don’t worry guys, you’ll be back after 5/6 years or even sooner. I have met many of you like that in Thailand, Philippines and many other countries. Good luck.

We built a pretty big house in the Phils. and I can live like a queen there with my pensions b/c I worked here for 30 years in the gov't. but I will not go back to live there. Three things I don't like, hot weather, healthcare and inconveniences. The one I like is Japan b/c they have a similar weather like here in Northeast.

"Everything is much more affordable" is the theme of the video but it simply isn't true. If you have children, take a look at anything child related, including education, toys etc. If you want to buy electronics or cars the prices are higher. Depending on your lifestyle, the price per square foot that you pay for a home in Thailand is higher than a lot of communities in the US. People making Japan/Thailand content tend to be OK with

Just depends on how you're getting your income. If you have to work there for income, I'm sure the cost of living is tough also.

I am Thai. Born there but grew up abroad, mainly the US. Moved back for a few years in my teens and hated how backward Thailand was, pre-internet, BTS, metro, Netflix, etc. Poverty and run down dusty streets…hated living there. Moved away and now visit as a tourist and LOVE the new Thailand. Everything is way cheaper and more delicious than the US. But the infrastructure and orderliness is different. In leaving the US, the cons would be the extreme heat, humidity, pollution, noise, congestion, traffic chaos, litter, disorder…but the pros are also plenty. Laid back, friendlier people (in general), low cost of living for luxury standards, great food, beautiful beaches and tourist destinations, modern rail and subways, no need to fear being knifed or pushed in front of trains, no racism (but there is colorism amongst Thais themselves), Thai style Karens are different than in the US, way way fewer carjackings and shoplifting…the list is long for both pros and cons. However, without enough money, even this cheap luxury lifestyle is not doable. Minimum $2k a month will let you live quite well even in Bangkok. It depends on what I want to give up to move there and retire. The whole month I was there, I sweat my way thru Thailand running for the nearest AC room and braved the heat to enjoy the beautiful tourist sites. Could I handle it every day for the pros? Who knows until I actually do it. Many Thai friends want out and many expat Farangs want in.

Was in Bangkok for a week (first time) in Nov. 2023. In fascinatingly odd ways (for an NYC-native!), it felt like 'home'. Safe, lovely, nice attitude. However, I wonder about Bangkok sinking/flooding, and art/music/alt-culture (as a musician/artist). Next time I will focus on that 'more' and try to connect with the artist community. ps - The MOCA (IMO) was FANTASTIC!!! Definitely worth checking out. 🙂
