Never mind the scratches & fog lights. You have the correct nose, The face of the car is most important. Especially the scanner. If it looks wrong then you have a big problem. Mostly its due to the digital camera shutter speed and not a legit 35mm film camera. Hey broadcast the face with a sweet scanner flow and you have won most of the personality of the car.

Don't let the nitpickers get you down! Keep up the great work! Also, be careful not to run the scanner light while operating the car on public roads. In many municipalities this is illegal, as it could mistake your car for a first responder vehicle.

    • @MotorScotti
      @MotorScotti  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you very much for your incouraging words! KITT's come a long way since that update video. I know, the use of the scanner light is strictly prohibited on public roads here in Switzerland. I only switch it on on secluded country roads or private places for show.

@@MotorScotti No problem! By the way, I noticed your car is a 1990 Firebird. The later F-bodies are actually higher quality cars for conversions. Supposedly, GM used better adhesives to reduce rattles and noises for the body and chassis.
      A few tips:
Those wheel covers are called "bowling ball covers" by those in the hobby. However they are notorious for falling off the wheels. The hobby secret? Black zipties. Buy a TON of them and fasten them to your wheels nice and tight. Keep extra zip ties in the car and a pair of snips in the glove box in case you need to change a tire.
Since you have an airbag steering wheel, I'm not sure if you plan to keep it for safety reasons or if you plan to eventually go with a screen accurate gullwing wheel. Check with the Swiss authorities before having it disabled by a professional if you choose to go this route. My recommendation is try to find another Swiss KITT hobbyist with the interior conversion. Some people have trouble using this steering wheel. If you are able to go this route, and if you want to, see if another owner will let you sit in one and turn the wheel fully left to right. If it hits your knees while turning, skip it. It's not for everyone. Some savvy users fit a quick release mechanism to allow swapping between a pre-90 airbag wheel for driving and the gullwing, but this isn't meant to work with airbag wheels. The cheap gullwing wheels use fiberglass, but the quality ones are made of steel. The steel ones are weighted better. As long as you get one made from a good mold, only you can tell the difference.
Regarding an interior conversion, particularly the dash, this is the most expensive conversion of all. I'm not sure if there are any shops in Europe that can handle the conversion, but go with an experienced shop that has done these before. Before you install one of these, definitely make sure your car's electrical system is in peak condition. Seriously. A good quality dash will use a lot more power than your stock OEM. There are a lot of lights and circuit boards with the new dash. I have seen conversions go with a dual battery setup and a high output alternator. Word of mouth is your friend here.
The season one/season two cars used the two TV dashes. These are the most popular and are usually more expensive. The more accurate ones use dual nine inch CRTs but these are hard to find, more expensive, and use more power. Less expensive options go with LCD screens. These are less expensive, use less power, and generally give you a higher quality output without the distortion at the corners. This is your choice on this one.
If you do decide to do the conversion to the dash, and if you can't find a quality shop, google " George Barris Knight Rider conversions." One last resort option, if you can afford it, is to get a quote to have the car shipped to the shop for these conversions. This won't be cheap though. Be sure you are sitting down when you get the quote! LOL...
Lastly, that's a pretty good scanner light. The cheaper ones use LEDs, but if you are really intent on screen accuracy, you can go with a halogen bulb based one but a word of caution - these are super bright, generate a lot of heat, and draw a lot of power! You will definitely need a beefed up electrical system and a specially reinforced scanner area for these. Usually heat sinks, fans, and high quality wiring is deployed here. To be fair though, most people won't notice or care which version you use. Definitely the way to go if you really want the same effect as the TV show.
Lastly, if you need a good reference for your conversion, look up Jay Leno's garage. Jay Leno reviewed an actual KITT used in the show. A fun coincidence - that one is also a season one/season two car.
Also, by far the most potentially expensive part on your car has already been done - the paint! The best news is you don't have to get a super expensive paint job to get KITT's screen accurate finish. Google ceramic coating. This is a chemical paint protection formula that delivers an amazing shine to the paint. Your car can look like a million without costing you a fortune.
Sorry for the long post. Really a fan of your conversion. Best wishes.

Thank you, I really appreciate your tips. Most of the points you mentioned I have already taken care of or let's say informed myself and surrounded myself with a great network. I will hopefully release a pretty long video on Wednesday on the topic of sourcing parts for both the mechanical, strictly car related stuff, as well as the specific Knight Rider related parts.
I have secured the bowling ball hubcaps (from Knight Passions) with three zipties each, they are pretty tight now.
Regarding the airbag, if I want to get a non airbag steering wheel, swiss regulation mandates that I organize a document from the official Pontiac importer from back in the days, that will approve that the car is still save to drive without an airbag. Gullwing KITT steering wheels, however, are not street legal in Switzerland, neither are quick release system... It's pretty strict here, but hey, safety first. :-)
There are pretty 'simple' solutions these days for the dashboard electronics. ZA Elettronica provide some of the best stuff. I have already seen and helped installing it in a friend's KITT and it doesn't need that much electricity, it's all LED.
Yes, Jay Leno had Joe Huth and AJ Palmgreen over to show their 4th season screen used stunt car. They have another season 1/2 screen used car currently displayed at the Pedersen auto museum in California. The guys are part of KITT STILL ROCKS, which now owns Knight Designs (originally owned by Billy Gunter). Long story short, top dashboard and switchods, etc.
Yes, we have a few good replica part builders here in Europe, as well as some terrible ones, but I'll talk more about that in my next video :-)
      Thank you for your interest.
Do you have a replica as well?

    • @houseofno
      @houseofno 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MotorScotti No but I am a huge fan of the show. My favorite KITT version is from the third season. I like the nose, improved switches and lettering, as well as the much nicer "vocalizer" at the top of the dash. I like the dual tv setup of the earlier car, and if you're into building a KARR replica in the future, it's the only screen accurate interior option. I like the all black KARR version (I LOVED actor Peter Cullen's voiceover for KARR in Trust Doesn't Rust - the late Paul Fries was OK in KITT vs KARR) with either a red, yellow or amber scanner light.
      Favorite episodes are:
      Knight of the Phoenix
      Trust Doesn't Rust
      Knightmares
      Lost Knight
      Soul Survivor
      Goliath
      Knight of the Drones
(KITT ejects Michael to save him before getting hit by the missile: KITT: "Sorry pal! Forgive me!" Michael: "What??" (KITT ejects Michael before getting hit by the missile.)
      Killer KITT
      KITT vs. KARR
Also, a TH-camr named Video Bob Moseley did a KITT conversion also. It's not quite screen accurate with a season 3 nose, season 2 dash, and a leather seat version of KITT's interior, but he did score points with enthusiasts for having a voice function in which the replica sounds clips from William Daniels (voice of KITT in the original show).
      Best wishes!

Seriously, you don't need the dashboard. Your car is beautiful as it is. If you want to use your car as a show car, then yes, insert that dash. But it has no practical use whatsoever if you want it for daily driving. And from what I've been reading, the whole process of installing it is not that easy. If I was in your position, the only thing I would add is the gull-wheel, but I would still keep the original wheel and use that funny joystick just for occasional fun. On top of it, driving such a car becomes even more difficult with that weird-looking wheel.
Personally, my ambition is to create 2 cars, one for driving (only an exterior replica) and the second will be a full replica (for occasional driving) that I might sell at some point.

I probably won't, but I'm still looking into wether I could somehow integrate the countdown and the voicebox in the factory dashboard without cutting anything.
