    My only knowledge of the Community Chest brand is that CC 4’s textures have been inside more of creation than Genghis Khan. I’m usually wary of community projects as a whole, as I’m becoming more fond of finishing an entire wad before getting to anything else, and one massive stinker map can ruin it for me. That being said, I am now downloading the hell out of this, because your recommendation of The Mucus Flow is the cherry on top of this community’s flagrant adornment of it.

    Something interesting I found in the original Blind Alley upload of Spirit World HQ was that it utilized ghost monsters (hence the name I suppose), something which was lost in translation so to speak. The archvile behind the window you were firing into while taking about Gene Bird "finding new ways to waste your time" was adjacent to a crusher that squashed a few former humans and shotgunners who were to become the ghosts. I don't think the segment is substantive enough to matter but I found it interesting nonetheless.

    Yea, Community Chest 2 is the sort of wad that I only gave a real try to once. Nowadays the only way I have fun with the vast majority of its maps is by summoning friendly Arch-Viles and hanging back with the Isabelle companion (courtesy mod by ItsMeVeronica) while the Archies kill and convert an army of monsters to my side.
    I'm very apathetic towards Gene Bird myself, but at least his maps are _functional._ I honestly dislike Use3D's works more, likely because he tries to soar higher and falls flat because he relies way too much on Boom's effects rather than proper mapping design - seriously, his name gives it away, there is NOT A SINGLE MAP OF HIS that isn't unnecessarily dolled up with fake floor-over-floor, bridges and other Boom limit-removing gimmicks. His Magnum Opus is Ventilator, map01 of Community Chest 3, as like Desecration here it was made specifically for its CChest project, is more visually cohesive and the usual bag of tricks is not dumped on your head.
    I love infighting, so The Mucus Flow is not quite overbearing to me. Definitely a hard map, but I find it manageable and, dare I say, fun ☺️ Maybe because (I'm not sure if you missed it and not just mentioned it) after you hit the secret killswitch to wipe out ALL the chaingunners that haven't teleported into the towers, you're left with a quite manageable 300-something enemy count. Also is it just me or did its architecture and colour choice influence Skillsaw in making episode 3 of Valiant? The similarity is rather uncanny, in hindsight. 🧐

    • @MtPain27
      @MtPain27  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It's crazy how influential The Mucus Flow is; I think the most I've ever seen it referenced was in Speed of Doom, which is a wad I'm excited to cover next season. I'm sure BPRD leaked into Skillsaw's work too. And I thought about mentioning the chaingunner switch but there never seemed to be an organic way to bring it up. I figured people would see the 100% at the end and assume it could be dealt with somehow.

    7:12 so the effect there is another cool Boom feature. It's a yellow colormap, which gives that ghastly filter effect. I believe a lot of the sectors have blinking lights too, which makes a cool combination. Im not 100% sure though, I'll have to open it up in Doom Builder. Hell Ground uses this effect well too.
    *edit on Map15's cool effects:
    Deep liquids and friction are sector tags in Boom, the "slopes' are just staircases of 1 unit wide sectors (a pain to make, I did it one time, never again lol), and the bridges actually work in vanilla. Ultimate Doomer is really good at those, but they're super buggy and really hard to get working.
    In Doom you can make sectors that don't reference any of the surrounding sectors, only itself. That makes it do more damage as a crusher and wel as move instantly and silently as a lift. If you merge your self referencing sector with a lift off screen set at the proper height it will be an invisible elevator. Then mark linedefs around the self referencing sector to raise and lower the floor. This will happen instantly and you can set the mid textures to look like a bridge. It sounds relatively simple, but getting them to work properly can be painful.

      Oh and Mt. Pain, sorry if this sounds preachy or like I'm a know - it - all, I just really like Doom editing and all the tricks, especially in Boom! :D

    • @TetrisMaster512
      @TetrisMaster512 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, Boom has a feature that allows you to swap to a custom colormap when the player is in a given sector. Its usefulness is kind of limited because the effect is invisible from outside the sector(s) the effect is applied to, which is why in MAP07 here, the area with the lighting is completely self-enclosed. It's also a tedious effect to make, iirc you need a linedef for every unique sector tag you need to use in the area, the linedef special basically uses one of its textures to store the name of a colormap lump to load, then applies the effect when the player is in the tagged sector. Regardless of its limitations, I think it's really put to good use here. I remember being pretty surprised by it when I played through part of CC2 a few years back, it's not something you really see used often.
      Also, I think I know the section of Hell Ground that you're referring to, but I think that's a different effect than the one used in CC2 MAP07, the effect I'm thinking of from HG is visible from outside the affected sector. Not really sure how that is pulled off, but I think it might be a modification to the global colormap, to make a specific light value render colored lighting rather than the normal brightness-adjusted values it'd normally give, which would be a vanilla-compatible effect if that's how it's implemented.

    I'm pretty sure I played this back in the day. I got into custom WADs around the time this was released. But I don't remember any level in this. Well, any level but one. Yup, The Mucus Flow is legitimately the only level I remember from this, and it's mostly cause of those Chaingunner towers. I remember trying to take them all out at the beginning and realizing that that was probably not possible. And while I don't remember the level at all, The Ultimate Doomer's contribution is easily recognizable to me as one of his. His Super Sonic Doom megaWAD from 2004 was probably the first custom WAD I played that wasn't the level my dad made, and CC2's Map 15 reminds me so much of Super Sonic Doom's Ocean City Zone (minus the underwater sections), and most of his 2001 megaWAD Fragport. He's got a pretty distinct style. I kinda want to see a review of Fragport in the future cause I wonder how it holds up. I think people really liked the exploratory nature of the WAD and general design, but I can think of several maps from it off the top of my head that look very bland and are huge with not much going on in them. But there's also a level that takes place in a laser tag arena and a level that's basically a Doom version of Volcano Valley Zone from Sonic 3D Blast (and the precursor to Super Sonic Doom), so it's got some cool ideas. But I digress. Great review as always!

      @@MtPain27 I think you'd like it well enough. Pound for pound it is EXTREMELY vanilla (god, it's begging for a midi pack), but it pushes atmosphere pretty far and it's full of quick, relatively compact maps that make it satisfying to run through. Doesn't really have any huge showstoppers, but it's good, clean Doom.

    Gene Bird's bleak concrete-sky-stone texture themed map aesthetic gives me such a nostalgic vibe as if I'm playing Doom on a cold february evening in 1998. I find it funnier when you think that some person who's currently in his/her mid late 40's, paying bills and raising children used to make doom maps by the name of Gene Bird in early 00's.

    I would say your treatise on The Mucus Flow deserves its own video essay, but you actually went ahead and did that before I could suggest it. Bravo work as always, sir! I don't expect you to get to the first Community Chest anytime soon, but it's worth noting it does have an entry on the top 100 map list at #54, "Citadel at the Edge of Eternity." It's not quite The Mucus Flow in terms of structure or memorability, and it might actually be famed for all the wrong reasons, but it would be THE reason to cover the original if there was one. That said, the third and fourth CCs are definitely more well-balanced and I look forward to them sometime, especially to see what gets said about lupinx-Kassman's two contributions to the latter.

    Been watching and rewatching this series, except for the WADs I have yet to play. LOVING these videos, they are detailed, straight to the point, and it's very interesting seeing another person's detailed views on certain maps. Some of these are even funny and take great use of editing. These are so much fun to watch.
    Very eager to see what else you will be covering, be it good or bad mapsets out there. I doubt you'll cover some of the ones I've played such as Sunlust (the first community-made Doom WAD I've ever played, seven months ago), and other WADs made by Ribbiks. But these videos, along with Civvie's, are kind of inspiring and make me want to review some of those mapsets myself.
    Hell, I've been making quite a few of my own maps, and have participated in some community projects recently. Don't worry, they're not Gene Bird level of quality, lol.
    TL;DR: Binge-watched, subscribed. Keep it up. :)

    Commenting admittedly late, but the one flaw with The Mucus Flow I've always had is that it 100% should've been MAP29 instead of MAP24. I believe for my own private copy of CC2 I actually even edited the map order because it always bothered me how weirdly placed it was - well, either that or MAP32, because it's so fundamentally different from everything else.
