"Now you'll most likely get killed." "Not me." "Yeah you will." "No I won't." I bet this is the only role Sean Bean's ever had where his character could say that and it be true.
Northern Wolf - thank you so much for uploading the Sharpe series. I've greatly enjoyed watching them and they've brought back some incredible memories. I'm truly grateful to you. Thank you.
Always a romping good watch Sharpes! I must have watched the whole series 5 or 6 times. Anytime I'm in the mood for some just fun historical epic Sharpes or Hornblower will do nicely.
The Prince of Orange and the Netherlands troops at Quatre Bras basically saved the entire 1815 campaign for the Allies. As Napoleon himself said to de Montholon on St. Helena: "But for the heroic determination of the Prince of Orange, who with a handful of men dared to stand firm at Quatre Bras I would have taken the English army in flagrante delicto and would have conquered as at Friedland."
LOL I remember he was suppose to have said to Wellington when it happened when his leg was hit, and exclaimed, "By God, sir, I've lost my leg!" - to which Wellington replied, "By God, sir, so you have!" LOL all very proper.
the dutch troops were speaking German because they were troops from Nassau who were fighting for the Dutch as William I was king of Nassau and the Netherlands. the first few skirmishes around quatre bras were actually fought by these troops
i remember he said after they cut of his leg, and his friends came to express their compassion, he said: 'no worries, I had a good long run so far. it had to stop somewhere
interesting little concept what if the french had won the battle of Waterloo.Napoleon was trying to make peace with the alliance and said he didn't want war and he promised the more republican groups in the government more rights.Had they won Blucher would be the only thing between Bony and victory
Well considering there are eye witness accounts of his actions. And he was personally wounded while leading the 2nd Belgian Carabiniers in a charge that routed the French cavalry, as well as leading various other attacks and charges throughout the course of the battle show that he certainly had a great amount of personal courage. And the Prince commanded various Dutch/Belgian regiments independently and ultimately played a major role in the allied victory. Which shows his tactical aptitude.
I think his stupidity has been greatly exaggerated in this episode, but a number of incidents from did actually happen. He did order 3 units to try and retake la haye sainte, against the advice of his officers, and one was all but completely destroyed by french cavalry, losing the colours. He may well have shown plenty of personal courage, along with most of the Dutch who fought at Waterloo, but he was a bad commander. I would put the success of the various Dutch regiments down to skill and valour of them and the battalion commanders, not the prince. The only reason he was there was because his father was the king.
@@stephenbwoytek2907 well he ends up a Colonel later in the series, that's for sure, but I don't know wether that would translate into a permanent position
@@thotarojoestar3045 Back in the day a regiment was commanded by a colonel as in today’s militaries, however a regiment consisted of two battalions. The first battalion of the regiment would be considered the senior battalion of the regiment and would be commanded the the colonel in command of the regiment. The second battalion would be commanded by the lieutenant colonel. At the end of this episode the the Battalion that Wellington refers to as Sharpe’s battalion is the first battalion of the South Essex which would be lead by a colonel, making sharpe a colonel
@Payneisgod1 Yeh the certainly did, though they showed up much later and merely turned what would have been Napoleon getting away to fight again another day into utter defeat for the French.
I'm looking at those rifles & three shots a minute might be OK, but what if you were to turn up to battle with an AK47 & long magazines. The battle would be over before it started!
Wellington complained about his Major Picton on the ground of Waterloo because he was not dressed in uniform. Would you say Wellington was a lousy commanding officer?
Their Dutch is indeed very poor. They have an extremely strong German accent. But that isn't even that strange. The Dutch royals were germans from Nassau and they had spent most of their lives at the Prussian court (their mother was Prussina) and a bit in England. When the monarchy was installed in 1814 they hardly spoke a word of Dutch. The same probaly applies to their offciers, being relatives or from their network.
My god, Rossendale's a gutless wuss. Sharpe could cut him apart with one hand tied behind his back and one leg tied to ball and chain.

At least they try their best with using the right language.... But Dutch isn't German.... had a hard time understanding what he actually said and I'm Dutch myself.
Sharpe wasn't in charge of any Unit, until the Duke of Wellington put him in charge of the Prince of Wales Own Volunteers, former The South Essex. He was a member of the Staff of the Prince of Orange. And staff members are often deployed for reconnaissance missions.
The later king William II of the Netherlands was indeed incompetent. He lost us Belgium in 1830. He had a terrible relationship with his father Stadtholder William VI, from 1814 king William I. (Stadtholder William III had also been of king William III of England and Scotland). William I of the Netherlands was quite a good king (apart from getting bankrupt) and his second son (the brother of the later William II) who was also their at the time was also a decent guy.
This is such an inaccurate portrayal of the Prince of Orange and the Dutch. Not surprising seeing as this is a British slanted view and the British have heavily biased all reports of Waterloo. The Dutch-Belgian Heavy Brigade cavalry actually outperformed the Union Brigade and the belief that the Dutch-Belgians were cowards is British slanting on the events. Many of the British officers actually admit to not remembering any events anyway because they were too preoccupied with their own regiments.
Beetje snel met de beschuldigingen, niet? Ik ben zelf Vlaming. Het is nu eenmaal gebruikelijk dat buitenlandse talen met een slecht accent gesproken worden in zulke films. Relax.
Sharpe's coat is awesome.
Thank you! I thought that too, what a cool coat..👍🙂
There will always be a Sean Bean as long as we have Sean beans to plant in the ground.
"By God I'll fillet you also!"
"You will NOT!"
Brave thing to say when an angry Sharpe is staring you in the face with sword drawn :)
Poor fellow lost his leg to grapeshot in the battle
0:58 and every filmmaker in Hollywood took offence to his confidence and thus the curse of Sean Bean dying in every film was born
"Now you'll most likely get killed."
"Not me."
"Yeah you will."
"No I won't."
I bet this is the only role Sean Bean's ever had where his character could say that and it be true.
My friend once joked that Sean Bean cheated death so many times as Sharpe that his entire film career has been balancing the scales.

Just awesome to see the chosen men return and are like special forces small unit fighting off larger one with sheer experience
Major Sharpe is about that life. That's soldiering °❤
You're a bloody star for posting these. Thanks again. Only two days to Sharpe's Peril!
he should be in dutch uniform (sharpe and wellington:"r u serious" look)....anyways sir, heres the map....lol too funny
Hurrah, the Gangs all here, or whats left of it. We are still missing Riflemen Francis Cooper and Isaiah Tongue, and poor Perkins, RIP.
Seeing Sharpe chase Rossendale put a smile on my face.
Seriously? Rossendale PEES himself?!?
Pixiebutt.
Thanks SO MUCH for posting these, ST99!
ROFL @ the "oh dear bad form" when he pishes himself.

"Bugger Balls" lol!! very sharpe!
hangman was my fav character
This series takes...liberties with the reload time for both rifles and muskets. Pay it no mind.
Humbuggered & humbuggery, love those curses from wellington
well, the prince is the surgeon from master and commander. he certanly likes his old english parts eh?

Ah Waterloo, where the British and Wellington saved the world from Napoleon, once and for all.
That's not at all how it was in reality mind you. In reality the Prince was extremely brave and a skilled commander especially for his age.
The combat does the books no justice, numbers aside, they could at least imitate the tactics used....but...Sean Bernard

Wish I could sit around with my mates and drink whiskey and wine while eating apples, bread, cheese, and butter.
With the help of 30,000 Dutch-Belgians commanded by the Prince of Orange
Boney's Eagle is fallin' down, Fallin' down....

Why is the Prince so worried about that dam Dutch uniform when Sharpe is doing his job.
10:17 FAIL
and
10:18 "oh bad form" ... bahahahaha
Humbugged, Damnit, Humbuggered! Humbuggery! Humbugged! lol
ah, Prussian soldiers, some of the best in the world at that time
yup, more fun than dollars though.
Thats the second time Sharpe has saved Hagman from a sabre slash.
He was Lieutenant Colonel at the end of his career
Paul Bettany also played Jeffrey Chauser in A Knights Tale.
And he played the Doctor in Master and Commander
It is still the custom to sell horses for guineas even today horse races purses are noted in guineas though the pound value is much highter.
@MLFive: I'd like to have them both - fancy and good fighters!! Still, given the choice, I pick the good fighters!!
You don't see it clearly, I'd love to see the look that Wellington gives Orange when Orange says that Sharpe should be in Dutch uniform.
From private to lt col, holy shit
Technically when Wellington says “your battalion sharpe I’m beholden to you” that’s basically a promotion to full colonel.

look out guys a massive force of french infantry is about to attack..... and the ball's tomorrow
@Payneisgod1 Yeh the certainly did, though they showed up much later and merely turned what would have been Napoleon getting away to fight again another day into utter defeat for the French.
wetting yourself in front of every officer in the army?
That's not soldiering
why did they get such an amazing man to play such a fool, the prince of orange?
It’s Paul Bettany
I like the Dutch and Prussians good friends of the Brits.
6:58 dude, this guy speaks SOOOO bad Dutch!!!
because they were in column not line. why they were not in line is beyond me
I'm looking at those rifles & three shots a minute might be OK, but what if you were to turn up to battle with an AK47 & long magazines. The battle would be over before it started!
Are the green jacketed infantrymen at 7:05 Dutch? cause they don't like Dutchmen
Is that Prince also the guy that played the gangster in the movie, "Gangster number 1" Im sure its him
Wellington complained about his Major Picton on the ground of Waterloo because he was not dressed in uniform. Would you say Wellington was a lousy commanding officer?
Picton's baggage had been misplaced on his way over from Britain. He was also a far better soldier and commander than the prince of orange
WTF he pissed hiself LOL
lol that coward fleeing
If Wellington WAS a lousy commander, than how did he end up beating Napoleon?
that's a gross understatement, he did far more than just sit there
Muskets vs. Rifles.
"Capture the flag" was just invented.
At 07:04 they're Nassau infantry not Dutch.

And again, the dutch sounds german. Well, at least it isn't actually german like most movies where someone speaks 'dutch'.
Bugger balls lol.
Are they Dutch the soldiers at 07:02?
Love this show, but why do the French never fire back?
Columns didn't tend to do all that much firing back, get in close and break the line so stopping to fire doesn't overly help that objective
why is Sharpe joining the dutch army and not the british one?
Because the prince of orange is Dutch and he's on his staff🏒🇺🇸😎🐧🐔

Dutch and German are very similar, and some of the words are the same.
i fought he was made a colenal in sharpes justice before he was blamed for stealing the emperers gold, i might have been wrong tho
Pretty sure that one was temporary tho
Uh, no. He made a deal with that officer to sell a horse to him for 4 guineas, which is... 84 shillings? God pre decimal British currency is stupid...

You can clearly hear the Dutch officer isn't a real Dutch or Belgian.
cos he wants to
Why isn’t the pee yellow?
And yet he speaks Dutch.
