Top 10 Disappointing Crowdfunding 2022

  • I love talking about board games. We've gone through the highs of 2022 so far on crowdfunding with the best campaigns but also the biggest surprises. How about now the kickstarter, gamefound, and don't forget about backerkit campaigns that didn't meet expectations or let down the most. Whether it was from price, pledge levels, deluxifications, or something else; not just what they were but why the didn't meet what we thought they were going to bring us when they finally launched.

    Agreed on Galactus. It's one of those items you get initially excited about and then the cost to enjoyment ratio settles in.

    Finally! Someone sharing my exact same thought!
    Thought 1: "Why the hell would I spend $100 on a legacy game?!"
    Thought 2: "Am I missing something here? Why are these people backing the game?"

      Was disappointed in JP as well, feel Funko and sometimes Ravensburger is just using their IP as a cash grab. After seeing the Dice Tower reviews I'm glad we didn't back it.

    17:21 I completely agree with you about Amygdala, Chris! When they canceled the campaign with the acrylic and came back with NO acrylic and only "thicker cardboard" and spot UV on the cover - I said that those are usually stretch goals which I refuse to pay for - and that I would see them at retail, as I see zero incentives to back their campaign at the price. I am still interested in the game, but this was one of the biggest misses campaign-wise in my opinion.

    I gave up on CMoN games and campaigns after their scam of a Time Machine Campaign (You didn't mentioned that one, though it might have even been last year). Thankfully that means that I wasn't dragged into the whole Marvel Zombies thing.
    I completely skipped out on the Spirit Island campaign in protest of how much of a mess it was. With no promos or anything to make it worth backing the campaign, it was easy to just wait for retail on it. It's not like there was ever any concern that it wouldn't be made.

Im currently watching this one and really felt compelled to say thank you. it's so refreshing and exciting to hear an actual point of view in a very relatable way. It makes me happy to be busting my butt on the indie music scene while listening to you talk about a favorite hobby I wish I could be enjoying right now! keep it up! it is being received and appreciated. best of luck in the new year!

    Tbh, I prefer miniatures to cardboard standees but if they would put acrylic standees in more games, I would probably always choose them if it's cheaper. The ones from Vagrantsong are awesome. I don't know if they are cheaper or easier to produce than miniatures but I am sad that there aren't more games with such standees.

    • @toddferrullo1871
      @toddferrullo1871 ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue is that depending on the number of copies of the game sold, then miniatures become a ton cheaper than acrylic standees or wooden meeples (and at a certain point comparable to regular standees).

    • @DarkCrysisHQ
      @DarkCrysisHQ ปีที่แล้ว

      @Todd Ferrullo Interesting. Are standee prices the same regardless of the amount produced/ not reducing as much in price as miniatures do?

    • @toddferrullo1871
      @toddferrullo1871 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DarkCrysisHQ Yes, acrylic in particular do not go down in price with quantity (and standard ones not much either these days with the increases in paper costs) since it is mostly materials cost rather than the mold cost, which is a one time up front cost for miniatures. Miniatures can be made for pennies after the mold costs are covered.

    Feel Rivet Wars pricing is trying to more closely align with normal miniature tabletop war games like Warhammer. If you look at Marvel Crisis Protocol their prices per mini are high as well and you still have to assemble and have no board/terrain. So for them it feels like this is a better $ entry point.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean i understand it. But oof at the same time!

    • @GettinJiggly
      @GettinJiggly ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GettinJiggly yeah if either shatterpoint or crisis protocol came with prebuilt I’d probably be in too deep.

    Spirit Island - I backed it only to support the development for one of my most loved games ever, however 100% there weren't any other reasons to back. Even getting it first isn't a guarantee in this day in age considering how many games get to retail first and a pre-order would secure that for me.
    Umbrella Academy - visually I liked it, but yes the gameplay sounded way too simple. Like another Marvel United with an IP that people don't know as well and without the super modular aspects that let MU standup for more avid gamers.
    Kingdom Builder - I'm glad I tried just the base game used because the game was just ok, nothing exciting enough especially considering how crazy they've been with the sprawl of releases
    Dune War for Arakis - I'm excited and it sounds like they designed something that's an easier entry point to War of the Ring and Rebellion. Quicker to play and quicker to teach - especially teaching the harokken side. I don't think the exclusives are that much in this one, so the reason to back for me was that it was just an overall value if you wanted all the content. I'm a fan of the series so the minis themselves were reason enough to back. I think with the designer of War of the Ring behind this that I can be comfortable it will be balanced.
    Fox Experiment - 100% I just decided to wait for retail
    No purple dude for me either - I did the all but giant purple pledge

    • @GettinJiggly

    Strongly agree on Galactus and Elden Ring topic (as a fan of Elden Ring i backed but i'm having huge backer remorse now...). Really disagree on the Dune topic, WotR has many expansions that does not unbalance the game and people really like it, so i'ts possible to balance Dune too...

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I'm not saying its impossible. But I don't think all of those WotR expansions were developed at the same time. And with CMON's track record for expansion balance.....yeah...

    Elden Ring's immersive narrative, presented through daily Updates, was clunky at best and phoned-in at worst. Not a good look for a narrative-driven adventure game, and I can't be the only one who noticed the bad writing.

    The minis discussion is a little strange.
    You don’t go into a steak house and scream “if this were only burgers it would be much cheaper”
    The minis are part of the experience, like the graphics in a video game.
    Also, the comparison between the video game and boardgame price is also quite strange.
    One is a “picture” on a screen the other is a physical object. Of course it is more expensive.
    I don’t defend the price politic here. I think this could easily have 30% more content for the same price. But it is what it is.
    Seeing a good underpriced KS now vs 5 years ago is different.
    5 years ago I was like “cool awesome deal, super happy”
    Now: “wow too cheap, they won’t make it, very concerned”
    All this leads to backing less. Which is kind of a good thing.
    “Time and space is the problem not money “ best sentence in the video! And I am only 8 mins in 😂
    Happy new year! Keep the channel going.

      "You don’t go into a steak house and scream “if this were only burgers it would be much cheaper”"
      That is a rather strange comparison. If I want a steak I go to a steak house. If I want a burger I go to a place that sells burgers. You are off the mark here I believe.
      I'm on standee team like Chris. I have enough minis to last me for a lifetime. But that is beside the point. Plastic minis is more expensive and raises the price significantly of just the core box. That puts off many people; a lot of people don't have the funds for that. If you want minis? Fine. Go buy the mini-version. Publishers want to sell their games to more people, and if less people can afford it the publishers don't get as much on their crowdfunding campaigns. More publishers have figured this out in recent years and include a version that has standees.
      You can say that minis are part of the experience but if I can't afford the game I don't get to play it. But otherwise you are right about the price politics. It is what it is. And I agree on underpriced crowdfunding campaigns. But I'm done with crowdfunding games now - except for two small publishers. I have too many game and too little time. ;)
