  • This is a film showing how Canadian National Railway mainline service was expeditiously restored after a collision of two freight trains. The collision occurred in town of Prescott, Ontario on the busy mainline in eastern Canada. Both mainline tracks were torn up, completely blocking the mainline service.

This process leaves very little ballast below the sleepers.

Very cool video! Thanks for making this. I like how you've included clips from the past and compared the process of laying tracks in 1900s vs today. Crazy to think that we use a lot of the same technology + manual labor to do these things.

Great job. Why is Canada not swapping wooden sleepers for concrete sleepers?

Wooden railway ties have been used for the better part of two centuries on North American railways. Compared to concrete ties, wooden railway ties are comparatively cheap, as well as light and easy to transport, install and maintain. All that is to say that there is an economic agrument to be made for continuing to use wooden railway ties vice concrete ties, especially on very long rail systems that aren't running high speed passenger trains.

@@tletter Wooden sleepers are not very cheap considering that they are made from premium timber, heat treated and pressure impregnated. Yes, the density of wood is lower than concrete. Tradition is sacred $). Regards.

In 2015, the Railway Tie Association (RTA) used $95 per timber tie and $200 per concrete tie installed, including all material and labour costs. Perhaps the economics are different in your country.

CN 3108 was not an RS-18 though. Otherwise, good coverage!

According to my references, Unit # CN 3108 was a Model RS18 with Serial # 82539.

      @@tletter I should clarify - the 3102 in the video (not 3108) is shown with an RS-18 graphic - it's actually a ET44AC.

Dog spikes? Have these people never heard of Pandrol clips? 😁 Surprised at bonding the track circuit wire to the fishplates, usually we bypass the fishplate completely to allow removal for greasing, oh well different system different rules....

Recall that all the short sections of tracks were parts of an emergency repair and that they were replaced within days by continuous welded rail (CWR).

whether the earth will mix with rubble over time due to the fact that there is no separating layer?
