You know, despite how much I watch your videos, I'm actually not a studio guy. But I definitely make use of these little tricks live. Especially now it's so easy with a lot of the gigs I'm doing nowadays having DiGiCo or Avid consoles as standard. I've been throwing faders live for 13 years, and still there's always something to keep it fresh. Now is the best time to be a sound engineer.

Hi Warren, I often visit your older vids again when a situation arises & I'm looking for specific things like this! Wonderful info thank you! I've noticed a few comments challenging the number of plugins used etc and you're always so pleasant in your replies. Most of us realise there's a number of different ways to achieve the same end & it's fantastic we get to see the number of different ways you deal with things... & the thinking behind it! Ultimately if the end result sounds good that's all that matters...whether 6 plugins or no plugins are used. One of the most liberating things I've learned watching your channel is there are no 'rules' & that really inspires a feeling of creativity! You're doing this constantly in a professional environment, so I feel reassured if I put xyz and more on something ( if the track calls for it) that it's perfectly ok, because you've done it! Awesome tip. Thank you Warren. A consistent level of low frequencies is really a caracteristic of newer recordings, and I've always wondered how to achieve that.
I've also used Multiband compression to automatically take out the low end of an acoustic guitar when the bass plays, so otherwise when the guitar plays alone it doesn't sound thin

Thanks for the primer Warren. I've produced 3 albums now, not having access to a multiband compressor (ie. fiddling around with strings of plugins to get the desired effect, which is a bit precarious), but enough was enough and I sprung out for one. Can't wait to get started.. ^^

Thank you again Warren for another great video. You covered some of this information in an earlier video and I have been using this technique with great results. The bottom end of my mixes are sounding better and better. I typically do not get a DI track, but with the fundamentals of what you are describing have been a really great place to start when I am working on the bass. Ever since I saw you use the SansAmp on the duplicate bass track, I have used it every time. Keep the videos coming!

Hey Warren did i get this right?!...so basically what u r doing here is having 3 fonts, high cut one of them (the cleanest one) to make it responsable for the bass body , then high pass the other 2 and boost them if needed in a way to give more presence,more saturation and more sparkle to the sound. Then you multiband compress all of them 0-250hz , Eq once more with a roll off around 50 hz and some boosting in low mids and high mids, then add Rbass )) thx for the great video

I use these methods as well but together with sidechain compression where the bass ducks about 3 dB for each kick strike. Usually, I find that the sidechain only needs to be active for around 30 MS to be effective.

Great video with goid detail on the concept. I'll be trying this on my next mixes. I have had problems with different bass notes seeming to be louder and quieter in the mix. I had been staying away from multiband compression as it can get too pumped on a mix but on one instrument I think you show how it can work great.

Maybe I didn't look in the right place, but I couldn't find a video that goes in depth about the gear needed and whatnot. I've got an issue with bass with a song I'm mixing currently where I'm splitting into two channels and processing each with Q2 / L1 but there's alot of "warbly" kind of tone coming from the bottom end... definitely going to try a more precise approach like you've done here!
Hi Brad, that sounds frustrating! I would always try and use only one source for the bottom end, as many people here are pointing out, when you they use multiple sources, even on synth bass, they get phase or beading issues! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
@6:00 minutes, when he's talking about rolling off the low end to avoid phase issues... does that actually make sense? I could see a low-shelf cut maybe, but rolling off the bass would actually actually create phase distortion in what's left of the low end frequencies of the DI with the those frequencies in the two cab-tracks. Unless he's specifically using a linear-phase EQ but that nulls his alleged justification for doing it in the first place.
Just tried this on a mix I'm working on. I already had a DI low passed at about 250 and a cab (well a fake one fed from a copy of the DI) high passed about 300 both of which were highly compressed, but just wasn't giving me the foundation I was looking for. All I did was lower the high pass on the cab to about 250, crank the DI about 6 dB, and do your multiband compression trick, and BAM, the low end was there! Thank you!!

Sweet, I kinda use the multiband c. on drums and bass,,,what I do is make a mix with the drums and bass,,,do some EQ,,then Multiband c,,and some more EQ just add some briliance and use it right next to the clean tracks.

I am using TDR's Nova Eq, which is a parallel dynamic eq - the free version, with 4 bands - there's a paid version as well, with 6 bands an other enhancements, but the free one is great!! It's Pro Tools AAX compatible.

Hi Warren. Great videos as always. Just a quick question about panning.... I'm recording bass 3 ways. Using a DI, akg112 and sm57 on the amp speaker cone. Would you recommend just keeping all 3 panned dead centre?, or will I run into problems if i pan the thinner sounds (sm57, di) wider, to create a slightly more stereo effect?. Also is it worth doing a print of both the mic channels to one single track after, or keep all 3 as separate tracks, but route to a buss???.

Great stuff as always Warren especially because Compression is quite complex. I added a Distressor to my Game and I'm really liking it. Also as we are both guitarists I should tell you that I have found my amp for life. Its the best line of amps I have ever used. Im referring to Dave Friedman and his hand made amps. They are to die for. I bought the BE-100 but might buy his Dirty Shirley head also. Yes, his naming conventions are somewhat odd like (Pink Taco, Brown Eye, Dirty Sherly and so on). Dave is the reason Eddie halen and all these guys had such great tone. Actually I believe Steve Perry might have one. Anyway try one, and I think you will love it. Its the best Plexi ever.

I use a Multiband compression on the bands whole mix in live situation..but am still not happy with my bass sound or the way it sits in the mix..i am starting to think it may need additional single band compression at the channel input..any ideas on that?

Makes perfect sense: today's sonic paradigm is one where the bass content is this super-consistent low cushion, underpinning everything else. But strangely, I find most of my favorite music was recorded _before_ this was the universal sonic expectation. I _love_ the sound of, for instance, early Stones records, and most of 70's pop & creative music. And there, the low bass was much more intermittent - when present at all. (If you play bass, you may have noticed that a LOT of Paul McCartney's Beatles bass lines hardly stray below C on the A string!) Yet why is that old sound so satisfying to me?
I did not understand why you change the timing of the DI right at the beginning. Did I miss something? Can you explain further?
Hey Warren im a bassist that wants to learn how to produce and has been working on his tone for years, and I’m happy to say that I have a stereo amp set up not just two mono Amps. Im trying to figure out a decently practical way of recording my sound for both live and studio use without two much phase cancellation and mush happening when im being tracked, can you give me some pointers?
awesome technique... could you give some tips on how much compression are you going for on the multi band ? Like how many dbs of reduction are u going for? how are u setting the attack and release?? I guess the exact settings are not important but maybe you could explain what you going for in your mind before setting them.
Hi Ehsan, I would adjust the compression depending on the desired effect, get relatively aggressive and then even it up with gain afterwards! It's just about keeping a consistent low end from 250hz and below. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

I have what I think is an important distinction to make with your low end compression. You're not constantly compressing the low end band. There are moments in this part where the compressor lets up or moves a bit. If you were compressing balls to the wall the whole time whilst simultaneously turning up the gain to compensate, you'd effectively be doing nothing, right? Or in a different example, if your threshold were set so low you were compressing 100% of the time, you'd effectively just be turning that band down like an EQ wouldn't you? Gotta have it moving a working a little to even out the dynamics I think. Which you were doing, it's just something I was noticing when I went to apply your method. Thank you so much Warren. I just bought Pro-MB today and was looking for a few starter videos.

I tend to always mic my Ampeg only when recording bass. I would like to start blending in a DI signal. Would it be a good idea to go line in in on a UA Twin Finity 710 preamp for a DI?

Great videos, always great to learn new techniques. If you (or someone) could explain the reason for the phase positioning at the beginning? I'm confused as to why the top track is out of phase? Many thanks in advance!
Direct Input and Microphone input enter the computer at different times as there is more delay through recording an amp as opposed to DI,, so they need to be aligned properly because waves add, so if a crest and an identical trough are played together there would be no sound. If they aren't aligned properly some of the bass will be removed and sound odd. Hope I explained it well. Good Luck.
+Ledger thank you! I understand the principles of phase cancellation, I was looking at the video and the peaks and troughs didn't seem to align properly but after a second look it seems they do. The different shapes of the waves threw my eye off.
Particularly found the shaping before the rBass useful!
I have not found this multiband technique to work that well with slap bass due to the sharper attack and higher treble.
As most of my songs feature slap bass, I find that sometimes I have to sacrifice the low end of the bass or aggressively eq the kick and sidechain out the kick drum frequencies of the bass.
Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk slap bass sound is brilliant. Full of lows but allows the treble attack and bass fills to pop out.
I know it’s a bit niche but do you have any ideas on how he might have achieved this?

Are the plugins you mentioned - REQ, Sansamp, R-bass, MV2 - part of the Protools package, or can they be purchased/downloaded together somewhere. would you happen to know if they are compatible with Reaper? One more thing, what happens to the bass mix when you have something like you've demo'd here where stylistically the tune starts out in this sort of straight ahead rock/pop and in the outro chorus the bass starts some funk popping, adding high end transients? Hi Mark from Hawaii! Great question! Sans amp comes with Pro Tools, RBass and the MV2 are Waves, however equivalents can be found to these plug ins. I am not an expert on Reaper but a quick look reveals that Waves now supports Reaper! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Cool Vid Warren! One question though. If you are only using a DI signal can you do the same technique by duplicating the track, then processing them in the same manner? Add a little grit to one etc.? I agree that bass is one of the hardest things to get right, so again thanks for the vid.

This was a long time ago but you might find this useful... if I only have a DI for bass I sometimes apply a high pass and some saturation and then play it out through my monitor, mic it up, and record it back unto a separate track. That way you get some grit and some air added at the same time to mix back in with your smooth and solid DI track. Gives it a more live room feel.

Stuart Henderson that boss compressor pedal IS NOT a Multiband compressor...it is a normal single band compressor with multi dimensional processing to keep as much dynamics as poszible..but it is not multiband..i am a mostly live sound guy..but I been doing it long enough to now that bass guitar does not need multi band compression on its own..it has a very small range of frequencys..only a mix of instruments or a instrument with a extreme range of frequency would benefit from Multiband compression in my opinion..just my 2 cents
Only a instrument such as piano or keys would benefit much from Multiband compression..and that is questionable for most songs..most instruments are too limited in their frequency range to benefit from Multiband compression..would it hurt?..no..but it is overkill for most things except on a full mix..or at mixdown..
So I have a mix project for school and I have a bass di and a bass cab track. In my opinion the bass cab has way too much low frequencies in the decay or release. So what I mean is I have a lot of hum that over powers the mix. What can I do to lower this?

hi Warren. thanks for the vid. i´m kinda scared to point it out, but i think you´re not quite using the C4 to the most effect. or even the right way for that matter. the way you set it up it actually has an extremely gentle ratio and when that "EQ-line" is constantly pushed down and doesn´t move, that means there´s no actual compression happening. at that point it´s just lowering the volume like a low shelf and since you compensate for that with the make up gain you basically don´t do much to the signal.
if you have the C1 compressor check how the compression line works in there. the C4 works the same way. the ratio isn´t just one straight line that consistenly compresses the same way. rather it gently slopes back to 1:1 towards the top. that´s the area you´re pushing the singal to in the C4. so the dynamics are still there, just lower in volume. the "range" in the C4 basically says at what point does it reach 1:1 again. when you set a maximum gain reduction of -4db on the C1 you´ll see how gentle it actually is. i checked it and a range of -24db is a little above a ratio of 2:1. for that i just send pink noise into the C1, pull down the threshold so the signal will be in that upper 1:1 area where no actual compression is happening, adjust the ratio until i get a certain rain reduction or "range" and than just see what ratio that actually is. was quite the eye opener for me.
hope that helps. hope i´m not getting bashed for pointing it out (^_^;)
the way i set up the C4 is i use a range of -24db and apply the threshold and make up gain however it´s needed. usually a gain reduction of somewhere between -6 to -10db works for me.

yeah, i figured my comment would come across the wrong way. definitely could have chosen my words more wisely. i don´t mean to belittle this tutorial and i´m definitely not trying to show off. sorry if it came across that way. obviously Warren gets what he´s looking for and that´s perfectly fine. and i totally appreciate him sharing his knowledge. i just thought if someone else tried out those same settings on the C4 on their bass, they might very well not get the results they are looking for. but i guess chiming in on that in this manner wasn´t a good idea.

synth bass usually has a consistent bottom end?? ... Mr. Huart, IIRC, I got into multi-band compression some years ago just to control synth basses... to make it clearer: think of detuned oscs beating the level/density away....
same thought over here. 3xosc of a minimoog in the subrange will beat like crazy :)
Wow sorry to hear you have that issue, yes multi band can be used to control any source that has an inconsistent frequency response! I find that because synth bass is one solid set of frequencies I can easily control it with volume automation and multi band compression. However the issue I have with live bass is the notes are inconsistent during the length of each note, not a consistent frequency. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

This is only the case when using multiple sub-sources. 2 slightly detuned basses is often used with a synth. Beating, because of phasing, isn't easy to fix by using a multiband comp. The way i do it, is remove the very low frequenties out of the synth's sound and add a new instrument with only 1 partial; a sine. It is less organic, but it works very well in a busy mix.
Thanks for the tip Jeroen! I find I often only use one source, I get given stereo Bass files to mix and that detuning creates a ton of phase issues so I only use one source. Quite a few mastering Engineers have mentioned that when mastering EDM they fight bass issues with polarity issues. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

That's Pro Tools. It turns whatever you record into a block of stone to then chip and carve into music. Why recording engineers are so crazy about it, whilst performers like Ableton or Studio One.
Hi Bruno, yes, sometimes I don't do any EQ or compression at all! Just some gentle volume rides! There's no one way to do it, just depends on the song and what you're trying to achieve! Hi Rabi, thanks for the comment! It's about horses for courses! When I mix through my console, the SSL, for instance I can use the dynamics on the channel and have some gentle compression and EQ. If I've tracked on my Studer A80 Tape Machine I hit the tape in a different way and use that to shape the sound and then do less EQ or compression. Produce Like A Pro If I do drum tracks or samples, I only like the drumming part. Studio One sounds exactly like the kit. So, it's just the fat channels and the air reverb, or use my stair case as a chamber. and done. I'm there to redo it if it sounds like %@^&. In a larger studio where the musicians have gone home, perhaps to another country, Pro Tools, would probably be better. Reaper is even flatter. I wound up with 20 plugins and scripts just on a kick drum. It might be able to do a fix if you forgot to turn on the 48 volts..lol
