Hi from Australia Daniel. I am 78 next March and I only got interested in Motorbikes when I was about 71
I never thought about it because when I was young I was into sailing, and then I discovered Hang Gliding. I was obsessed with my hang gliding for 23 years. My eldest son purchased a motorbike so I decided to give up gliding and buy a motorbike. My first bike was a Suzuki Boulevard 800 cc. I only had it for a couple of years and traded it in for a Suzuki VStrom 650 XT a 2017 model new. I have clocked up about 40,000 km on the Strom and I love riding it solo and with friends . An old friend said to me when I got my first bike. “So now your trying to kill yourself riding a motorbike “
My reply was “no I am riding a motorbike to live”
Best wishes to you, I hope we can both keep rideing for many more years.

Awesome, Murray! I was the King of hang gliding in Norway for some years. Then went onto top level cycling, since 53 I found the joy of 2 wheels, riding the GSA and also the S 1000 XR which I love even more. Didn't think it possible. Now at 62 real soon, a toss between the XR and (heaven forbid here in BMW land) the new Multistrada V4S Pikes Peak.

@@VisionTalks Similar path in life. I would have loved to fly in Europe. Flown hang gliders in most sites on the east coast of Australia. There are some awesome sites in Australia all year round
Inland thermal flying and ridge soaring on great coastal sites
I very much missed hang gliding for a while but now I enjoy my VStrom
Have you flown in Australia, I suspect you may have entered some of our competitions
I was on the training hill in 1989 learning along with John Durand snr.
Years later I was on the take off at Tambourine Mountain and observed Jonny Durand Jr do his first high glide. He was only a kid
I have been friends with the Durand family for 33 years
Being a gun pilot yourself I am sure you would know Jonny
At one time Jonny and I had the same Moyes gliders. He would always get up and away. I got to thinking there was something not quite right about my glider because it was hit and miss with me
We swapped gliders for him to test mine
You guessed it, that day he went straight up in a thermal in my glider and I ended up bombing out

At the age of 73, following a 30 yr hiatus from motorcycles, I bought, for my 74th birthday, a very aggressive looking, beautifully appointed 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400 KRT ABS sport bike. It is so "flickable", it's as if I could practically control it telepathically, and, it is lightweight, which is great for me since I still ride it at age 77 (in three months), even with my ever present "passengers" "Stenosis" and "Bursitis". Well done Sir. You are living proof that mental and physical decline with age starts with 'giving up' . And you certainly haven't given up.
Yesterday I talked to a gentleman enjoying a coffee on the seafront at Portstewart in Northern Ireland. 5 m away from his 2019 1250 GSA which he was gazing at proudly. We chatted: he is 78 years old but honestly looked 60. I am much younger...70 .. and ride a motorbike every single day if I can. Gave my son my 1200 GS for 2 years as I felt it was a bit 'big' and went down to an 800GS. He put 26k fast miles on it. I missed it so much that when he went to a KTM I got my GS back. It has never gone better and I love it. Too big? Not a bit. You on your 1250GSA are proof of that. I intend to ride bikes until I can no longer do that safely for others and for me. At 90+ years old? WHY NOT. Thank you Daniel for confirming that I am not alone with my dream. The Dunlop road racing dynasty here in Ireland (Google Joey , Robert, William, and the epic Michael Dunlop) had / have a life ethos:
    KEEP 'ER LIT

Of all the bikes I’ve owned, the last four have been GS or GSA’s, they do it All with safety and reliability. I have the aluminum cases (all three) and the soft liner’s that lift out for taking indoors or in a tent, the Cases can then be used as camp chairs / table, they can be re-keyed to match the ignition. If you lay the bike down or a side swipe, those boxes will save your legs too. Very happy riding to you.
Cheers from San Diego from a 73 yr young GSA rider

@@danielver4484 Deep respect sir! I was happy to watch the video, especially because it is not cut and assembled. Congratulations!
I would like to share my opinion, just for those who are considering buying a motorcycle, to have a broader picture.
When deciding which motorcycle to buy, you need to know where and how you would like to ride it. It is also important whether you drive alone, or if you drive someone else on the back seat.
Since I have been a motorcyclist (1974), I know that motorcycle must fit your character. If you have a more sporty spirit, the motorcycle should also be more sporty. Unfortunately, some other important factors are also important. Over the years, we lose agility, physical strength ...
I am a motorcyclist at heart and soul, but I did not want to buy a bmw gs motorcycle, why? Simply, because it is too heavy.
A motorcycle that I can’t lift on my own, (without risk of damaging my spine), if it slips or falls, for me seems inappropriate.
I like to go on short or long trips, after everyday chores, in the city, and mostly alone. After careful consideration, I chose the Yamaha xtz 660. Light, comfortable, fast enough for my driving style, reliable, easy to maintain, I can also do the service myself, excellent on and off road ...
I also have a Bmw k100 rs 16v, in excellent condition, but I only use it for long tours when I travel with my girlfriend.
Why am I writing all this? Anyone who wants to buy a motorcycle and want to ride a lot, think carefully before buying, and test it first, otherwise you may have a beautiful motorcycle, but especially in or front the garage (for viewing).
You Sir Daniel, I wish unlimited happy kilometers with BMW Adventure...

I'll make a similar video about why I selected the GS and we can laugh at how two guys made the same analysis and came out with two different answers. Have to say Andy, I’m 63 riding an R1200GS/16 model. Honestly, in 50+ years of driving, I NEVER drove such a machine, talk about balanced. I’m doing lock to lock U turns, feet on pedals, the GS is something else. Few too many knobs and warning lights, but it is forgiven. Got the last Analogue Dash which I like! Clocks…. And the best thing is, I actually feel safe on it. Fastest I’ve driven it was 160Kph for one minute, then back to 130, which is ‘his’ cruising speed. Too Old?, not yet, the GS will tell me when it’s time to retire!. This man gives me hope!…. Oldest biker I knew was 87!…… Hope that’s me.

Well done Dan. I own the same bike, and commute to work and back every day. We go on a “ adventure” every fifth weekend, we include the Friday. Here in Cape Town we are blessed with long gravel roads a hour outside the city. Small tip, if you have the bike on the side stand, and then try to bring it vertical turn the bars to your left sitting on the bike. You will be amazed how easy the bike comes of the side stand, and ready to ride. You are inspirational. Ride safe and in good health. I

I'm 74 and ride a 2009 GS Adventure as well. Great bike..I love mine. But....this bike is big and heavy [and expensive] so it's not really an "off road" motorcycle in the true sense of the word. Lay it over and you'll probably have to have some help picking it up...to say nothing of the fact that you'll probably tear up your panniers. Well packed gravel is about as far as I'd take it.

I enjoyed hearing of your motorcycling early experiences and all the different BMW models you've owned. It seems a logical progression to your present choice but I am amused in the seeing of your size to your bike. With your experience I expect you'll be just fine.
For me at age 73 after a lifetime of riding I've come to appreciate how much lack of weight contributes to the experience of cycling and an unobstructed view of an unfaired bike enhances my imaginative experience of flying. To this end I wear a minimal helmet and impact resistant, frameless glasses. Especially on my Husqvarna supermoto there is nothing perceived between me and the landscape I'm enjoying. On my MT-10 it is a somewhat similar experience but then I can feel like a falcon. I still enjoy speed but on a limited basis.
I ride daily almost exclusively on my motorcycles and experience a kind of athleticism I once felt in my high school/college years. I don't tour on a motorcycle and have missed what you've seen and done. I'll drive an auto to tour with which I can throw in the trunk a case of wine or an impulsive buy, also avoiding the worst of bad, especially unexpected weather . . even sleep in it. Thanks for your inspiration, pal.

    Hi Dan,
Hello from the Netherlands. I am 63 and great to see that you are riding a 1250 GSA too. I had several GS bikes and bought my current 1250 GSA in 2020. My wife is riding a 700GS and together we like riding through Europe. In 2018 we did also Marroc which was a great trip and for 2020 we planned another very special trip. About 35 years ago we backpacked through India and than my wife got sick. We had to cancel our world trip and went back home. But I always had in my head to go back once to see the Himalayas. In 2020 the pandemic started and the trip was cancelled and that also happened last year. For this year we hope really to do this trip. We will ride up this huge mountain on Royal Enfield Himalayan bikes. Untill now it's a dream, but we want to make this dream happen. You only live once!!

Congrats on your age and, of course, your dedication to continued motorcycling. It is always refreshing to see someone your age hitting the road on two wheels. I just bought a new ATM 790 Adventure last year myself. I like yourself am up there in age, I will be 83 in a couple of months. Last when I bought the new KTM I said I bet I was the oldest buyer of a new bike, the salesman said "Not really we sold another motorcycle to a guy that was 90". So that is a true indication there are a few of us old dudes still riding. I've been riding continuously since I was 13 years old somewhere in the neighborhood of 3/4 of a million miles and I still get excited to hit the road every day or so.

I just bought a low-mileage 2005 BMW F650CS with single-cylinder engine & belt-drive in Sunnyvale, CA. It's in excellent condition and outfitted with touring luggage. I'm storing it at my friend's garage with plans to ride it home to New Orleans some day. Happy New Year to you as well, Lawrence. I am planning my next long trip (leaving May 1st) that will take me SE from Denver. One of the destination points is New Orleans. My rides are as much on two lane roads as possible - so will be a meandering route through side roads. I find small towns in the SE to be particularly interesting - a part of the country that doesn't get much publicity but has a lot of fascinating history. I bought the bike in Chattanooga (from Pandora Euro Sports) with 4500 miles - well equipped (lights, side panniers, BMW - Navigator then added more touring equipment; cylinder head crash bars, top case and a Sargent Seat (long distance comfort and adjustable height.) Nice GSA! Congratulations!
I'm 6'2" tall but always rode 250cc to 350cc dual sport bikes. I never grew out of them because bigger bikes never seemed as fun. (I almost never ride on highways.) I bought a BMW G310GS for my 60th birthday because my adventures are now a bit less adventurous, but I still want to ride dirt roads and mild off road, such as the BDRs. The baby GS has much better road manners than my dual sport bikes.
I loaned my baby GS to a retired lawyer who was having trouble handling his bigger GS. He bought a G310GS and sold the big bike. Many older guys are downsizing to enjoy riding longer. Maybe you'll get a baby GS for your 80th birthday. 😀
You mentioned American gun crime a couple of times. There is no such thing. Firearms are innanimate objects, incapable of intent or volition. More Americans are killed with hammers than "assault weapons" but we don't talk about hammer crime. Crime is committed by criminals, not whatever tools they choose. All honest peace loving people want to stop crime. We do that by stopping criminals, not by focusing on irrelevant distractions from the true problem. The worst violent crime is in cities and it largely results from the local government policies, so naturally they need a scapegoat so they aren't forced to acknowledge their culpability. It's not a coincidence that most of the violent crime occurs in cities with most of the gun control laws.

      Agree on the smaller GSes.
And while I respect your opinion on gun crime, - may I still ask why gun violence and the number of gun incidents/capita seems to be such a uniquely US American issue among developed countries? Are Americans particularly bad? Or could it not have to do with the easy availability of guns?
I doubt that hammers have been used in any mass incidents in the US in 2021. Mass shootings (i.e. reported incidents): 687 (so far) in 2021.

Enjoyed your video Daniel, I just turned 80 and have your same BMW! I also have a 2020 DCT Tour and 2012 Honda Gold wings, These bike are getting a little heavy, but I manage. I just purchased another, Honda CB500X, 400 Pounds. I will never stop riding, life is short, especially with this virus. Ride safe Daniel, Joseph from Aviano, Italy

Hay dan glad u ridein. Im 71. Been ridein a RT for 4yr now roll about 13k a yr. Fantastic bike for twistys n tourin.
I hav a jeep wrangler for all the gravel n dirt places i want to explore. I find this setup best cause on pavemrnt i can look at scenery alot on the RT. But on dirt n gravel on a bike im watchin the ROAD! Whereas on p n g in the wrangler i can watch scenery n haul enough to go days n the rough. In the rough i rather ride a 350 dirt bike n hav someone haul the gear n a jeep. Hope to c ya out there sometime, keep ridein my friend.

Hi Dan. Nice GS you have there. I'm in the UK, 73 years old and have been riding motorcycles for nearly 60 years. Went to BMW in the 1990's and had a variety of K's and Oilhead Boxers. My favourite was an R1100RS - loved that bike. I tried a R1200GS but found it too upright (lower back problem). So I currently have an R1150R, which is perfect for riding the country lanes and getting up into the hills (Pennines) where I live. Well good luck riding your GSA - I hope that it gives you many happy riding miles.

Respect to you sir! I returned to motorcycling after a 16 year break, I'm 54 now and loving it. I bought firstly a Suzuki SV 650S, quickly realised I wasn't into the "sports" position anymore so traded that for a Kawaski Vulcan S 650. Lovely bike but I wanted a little more power. The Vulcan gave way to my current bike, a 2021 Yamaha Tracer 900. Perfect bike for me and me riding style. Keep riding and living that dream

Manong Dan, it was wonderful to have stumbled on your video and a thoroughly enjoyed it! I'm 53 and have 3 bikes (VFR 800, R6 and a GB550 Cafe racer). R6 is track only, the VFR is my daily/long distance and the GB is weekends. I've always wanted an ADV and maybe someday I'll trade all 3 for one (maybe a BMW or Honda). Seeing you handle that bike with no issues is so awesome to see! I would love to come visit you in person someday and maybe go out on a long ride. I take it you're in CA? If you get a chance to ride out here in the East Coast, look me up. I'm in Northern VA. You are, among others, my inspiration to keep riding well into your "young" age my friend. Stay safe and happy New Year!
