This video is on how a comb pick works and how it can be used to exploit a pin tumbler lock.
The criteria for a comb pick to work is the following:
1. The keyway needs to be wide open so the comb pick can be lifted midline
2. The comb pick needs to correspond to the key pins: 4 pin lock = 4 tooth combpick and they need to align
3. The bible needs to have enough room to accommodate the keypins, driver pins, and springs.
Comb picks are easily defeated by warding and appropriately sized bibles.
I demonstrate in this video using a four tooth comb pick on a four pin Master Lock 140 which has three standard driver pins and one spool.

Best channel I've found. Thanks
Finally someone with the brains to show a close up
THANK YOU
Thank you for checking it out
That was very informative, especially in seeing the pins get lifted far beyond their regular shear line. Thanks.
MeSayus I am glad it helped you visualize it. It's a cool approach but unfortunately it only works on some locks.
The best explanation I have seen yet. Do you have any more instructional videos on lock picking and the different tool
Excellent presentation
Mindlessmotion thank you for the kind words!
Thanks really interesting
pierre barroso thank you for the kind words!
I just picked up a 140 today from lowes. feels like the pins stop short when lifting. Almost feels like the comb can rock back and forth in the middle. Wondering if they have a long driver pin in there now.
Im using the narrow spaced 4 pin comb from the Sparrows Comb Bar set
Specifically its a 140D. I also picked up a 141DLF and it feels similar
.
Great vid! Can this be done on a magnum lock?
It doesn't work on many locks. I am not sure which lock you are referring to
@@HelpfulLockPicker its the master lock magnum M1 lock. Sorry for not specifying lol
You comb must match the pin spacing, correct?
Yes, that without that the prongs would not lift in the correct spots
How do you know if the lock is a 4, 5 or six pin?
@@arlenbell4376 I haven't a clue.
But the kid that works for me says all you need is a single-tipped rake and a rotator
I have tried different combs on this lock and have never seen the lock core move at all. The pins lift, but this creates no movement. Absolutely does not work as shown. Did master lock change this on new models?
It is possible but I have not seen that personally
The real question is where did you get that comb pick?
I believe Sparrow lock picks
Are comb picks used for Master locks alone, or can they also be used to open a door lock?
Essentially whatever locks they work on but for the most part you only find them on cheaper locks typically padlocks
The cheap masterlocks only use the nose paddles. Grind all the rest away, and you have a Master-key.
you guys all do this lock stuff on well maintained locks.. do it on a lock that has been on a barn door for 20 years or out in the cattle pen for 12... Not one that "looks" old but one that is hanging on a barn door.. No bashing meant here.. I think you have a grand site.. it is just not that easy in the real world.. my thumbs still haber bruises ( I am sure you know what I mean) Carry on and thinks for teach us.. even though it might take me a week of sundays..
I agree, well worn locks can often be much harder
@@HelpfulLockPicker well, they certainly are for this 69 year old newbie.. But he does a nice teaching show.. I have learned and that is a good thing!
i start with a good soak of spray lubricant, and ten minutes.
