- Karen and Richard Carpenter play live for the BBC studio audience September 25, 1971. This song is a perfect representation of how Karen sings: without even a hint of affectations. She only cares about bringing attention to the music and lyrics, not to herself.
Karen's singing style is so unique to today's audiences. If they indeed see or hear her sing, they really don't know what to make of it. They're used to all this nonsense, vocal twirling and BS, that even a tender song these days can be ruined by the typical last, long, high note that is "so" powerful. The message is lost. What's the point of even having lyrics. I prefer to hear Ella scat singing wordless vocals because that is what is happening today. People singing wordless vocals because they don't care about the lyrics. But today's audiences, once they hear Karen sing, she slowly grows on them. And surely enough, they become a fan of her and this always-enduring vocal style.
