Toyota and Subaru didn't have to make a small RWD coupe for enthusiasts but they did anyway. If I had room for a third car, a GR86/BRZ would be on my shortlist. I want one.
Former 2022 GR86 owner here. I had to sell mine due to personal circumstances at the time but I still think about it every now and then and how much I miss it. Such a great fun car.
Dude you should just buy one anyway despite the Chicago winters. I've heard they do great in the snow with the right tires. I sold my Civic Hatch Sport 6mt and my 330ci to get a GR86 and it was worth it! Sometimes I miss the space, but like you said, happiness is a downshift away and those concerns fly out the window.
Would it get destroyed by the salt though? Right now, my 15’ Civic Si is a bit higher than a 86/BRZ so the undercarriage looks ok so far (granted, I get it wax underneath for every winter).
I mean sure it’s susceptible to salt damage in the snow, but you can also get a lift and snow tires on the twins. I don’t live where it snows and I’m thinking about getting a lift on mine with some all terrain tires. If you wax your undercarriage for protection on the civic then you should be fine with the 86 if you do the same
@@bearclaw5115 I live in Montreal where they go overboard with salt on the road😓. I’m gonna stick with my Si for a while (just had it for 2 years) but I’ll think about it later on.
I waited 14 months for mine. First new car I ever bought and I don't regret any of it. I've had all kinds of tuner cars and faster cars but this car is honestly so good. I highly recommend buying one, you won't be disappointed.
I have always liked the GR86 for its classical design, rear wheel drive, non-turbo, small and light and so on. These cars are getting really rare in manufacurer's line ups these days
The infotainment is possible best in class. The screen, and the processor unit, are slow, and crap. But as far as modern infotainment goes, Homer Simpson could operate it. It’s so stupid simple. There’s nothing really in it. Most people. Want all the toys and lights, I just want my CarPlay to work and work well. I wish it was faster and HD, but I’ll take it. I personally have not had a single connection issue with my 2023 BRZ but I have heard of both 86 and BRZ owners complaining about that. Knock on wood. This car is literally perfect as a package. Everything you need, nothing you don’t. Throttle response individually, or steering individually, or a few other things could use better tuning, but as a whole.. I’m just grateful it exists and I fucking love mine.
My wife has owned a 2024 BRZ Limited manual (silver) since last summer, great car. We took it from DFW to the Bull Shoals / Mountain Home area of southern Arkansas and although a little noisy it did great and was a lot of fun running around the deserted curves and hills.
13:21 I have the same feelings with my '20 BRZ with the brembo package. Genuinely improves your mood, and surprisingly makes for a good single dad car lol
You should do it! Buy a GR86, it makes you so happy! You can get snow tires and it'll make commuting in the snow very manageable, the only thing you have to look out for is clearance.
Honestly, driving my GR86 in the snow with a good set of snow tires is one of my favorite things about it. It's really fun to set phasers to slide in snowy parking lots.
Good review, thanks. Coming from a '23 BRZ owner, I can say that it's definitely a proper sports car experience at this price point. I think what some people don't realise is that these are the cars that will be sought after in 10 or 20 years time just like the '90's 'JDM' cars are today. A much more analogue driving experience for the money than anything else on the current market and a true joy to drive and own. ...you don't know that you're living in the good times until they're gone.
Bought mine on Memorial Day. I actually saw it a couple of days before online at dealer, went two days later, and bought it out of the showroom, lol. In hindsight, I guess I got lucky. All Black, Premium, 6 speed. Love driving it! Looks awesome!
Great review, man. I recently picked up a BRZ as I was looking for a second car. A friend has one and loves it. So he had me give it a try. I had my eyes on more expensive cars and I kept coming back to the best bang for the buck out there and can gladly say this car is as fun to drive as my old AP2 S2000 was. Sub’d!
I've had a lot of imports in the past, and I actually had just said that this car reminds me of the feeling of the S2000. The balance and precision in a lightweight frame just takes me back.
i like when you sit behind the drivers seat since we're similar heights so it gives me a better idea of the rear seating space in a worst case scenario.
i’m a simple vato. I see a video by Zack, i hit the “like” button. I plan to replace my 99 10th anniversary Miata for a BRZ. the miata is fun but i need something SLIGHTLY More practical.
I just bought one and picking it up next week...and ive watched so many videos on this car and im scared.....im so hyped to drive it and expecting so much of the car now. I'm afraid I'm about over hype myself lol...unless it's actually that good. I own a 2015 sti btw buuuut um it needs Work lol so I decided to buy a 2nd car as I work on my sti, the gr86 was the car I decided to go with.
Feel like you keep falling in love with it because of your love for rotaries. Formula is the same (it even has the same poor fuel economy of rotaries LOL). If I didn't already have an FB, this would be the perfect one car solution for an enthusiast.
If I hadn't had a flat-4 Subaru for the past 17 years, I'd be all over this. Although, I do live close to IAG Performance, so it would be a match made in heaven as far as mods & tuning goes but.. I'm ready for a different platform. I'm really leaning towards a new Mustang GT or GR Supra for new or used C6/C7 Corvette but I can't decide.
You underestimate the snow drivability of a BRZ with winter tires. Torsen is standard bro. It’s better than FWD by a lot. I did fine in Canada with my FRS.
This is absolutely the NEW car for enthusiasts to buy for this generation. Sure the Supra and Hellcats are cool or whatever, but for most normal people it's either this or something with 4 doors.
I got to sit one of these a few months ago. A few things surprised me. The size of the car is that of a Miata, it's a very small car in person. The other thing is just how low you sit in the car, I'm 5'5 and the E brake is almost to my chest. The visibility was pretty dang good too. Also I was disappointed to feel the clutch as it was soft and spongy and short, although you could probably just do a stage one clutch
The early model (the only one I've driven) handled surprisingly poorly. Driving as I normally do resulted in understeering like a FWD car and coming to a sliding stop while going relatively slowly. The owner bragged it had the same wheels and tires as a Prius, which was super believable.
Definitely debating on getting this or a Mazda3 for my next car. My only gripe for the GR would be insurance, premium gas and fuel economy. I'm also in southern california. Any thoughts?
how many times will you buy a brand new sports car in life? idk about you but I'm not sure I will ever buy another new car again like that but I pulled the trigger on a 24 premium gr86 and I will never regret that, I opted for the Manual transmission while not knowing how to even operate one but understanding I could learn, if you don't have a large family and can responsibly financially afford it then I implore you to make the plunge!
I always notice these on the road when I see them, sharp looking car. Don't see to many of them to be honest, I wonder if they gave this car about 50 more HP if it would sell a little better. I got a 2004 RX8 when it came out and LOVED that car but always thought just a little bit more horsepower would of made the car just that little bit more special.
+50hp leading to better sales? Well they already did that. The current gen makes 50hp more on dyno than the old car. I've driven both and the new version definitely can not be called slow. People complain no matter what. No sports cars sell well. Americans don't care about them anymore. Look at the pony cars. Mustang sales are a quarter of what they were 20yrs ago. The other pony cars are gone.
i have fun with my 92 hp 101 lb ft 5 speed subaru loyale with part time 4wd .more power to front wheels. thanks for getting in the rear passenger seat. why is this gr86 smaller than the old scion tc? all i am saying too bad the gr86 isnt as big as the tc , the hatch concept is where its at.
I slammed my desk when it passed the BFB test

It’s very hard to resist selling my car, taking out a loan and buying one of these.
If they made a liftback version with no back seats it'd be the perfect daily driver
The hatch would add 40-50lbs up high and ruin the low c.o.g. which defeats the whole point.
That’s exactly what I be saying… they could’ve made 2 versions… the coupe and the hatchback as it was originally.
