I agree. This was the first version I heard then started researching. One of my fav songwriters, covered by Jackson, Dwight w/ Flaco and the man himself!!!!!
I like this version, though I had no idea that it even existed until now! Wikipedia has a pretty cool article on the many artists that have covered this great song. Amazing.
Love the song and this cover of it. The slight tremors in the vocals speak volumes of angst and vulnerability. And I like the fact that unlike most covers he didn’t change smith corona to smith and Wesson. True to Zevon’s original.
Thomas Hermann Sounds neat, but i like the smith and wesson. Linda’s was the 1 st version that I ever heard, and she said S+W, just adds more Spunk, although I no what Warren meant.
Linda was a visionary 43 years ago when she sang that she pawned her Smith & Wesson instead of Smith Corona. You walk into any pawn shop today and you will get good money for a Smith & Wesson, but show up with a Smith Corona and if they even figure out what it is they will laugh you out of the place. To be fair though Zevon’s original demo did have it as Smith & Wesson. He never really explained why he changed it from a gun to a typewriter when he cut it for an album years later.
And I'm not sure why Ronstadt did (although the "heroin" to "pale moon" is quite understandable). I would think mentioning a notorious Saturday Night Special gun would be more "controversial" than a common typewriter. ? I still have not heard anyone mention Zdude's "original" final verse, though, about the Big Samoan b/f ..
O.K., I'll bite WHO else (of musical notoriety) exactly has actually recorded and released this song commercially besides the Zdude and Linda? Until tonight, this was the only other version I have ever encountered.
Bounced here from Linda. ......one of the last two rock groups I dug....this guy always makes !e think of a short haired brunette stripper who danced to cc every time...night life uptown memories.
No, I didn't even hear about this version until tonight and this is one of my favorite Zdude tunes .. Only other person/band I know that did it was Linda R.
Sorry, but that's Zevon's own tune .. although Linda R. gave it a very good shot .. kinda strange though hearing a gal singing about another gal, but given today vs. 40 years ago maybe that isn't all that unusual anymore .. :-x
No it is not. Whiney and complaining. Instrumental is lacking. Go back to the original and it will be a real discovery. Also check out Warren's friend's version . Masterful. Jackson Browne, best friend.Promoting Warren for 40 years.
I tell ya .. why don't we all just dump on the man .. ? GC he WROTE the song and no one sings a tune better than the person who wrote (and lived it) .. at least from the heart, maybe not technically ...
Not sure if I agree with that. Now I will say that for the ”smearing feces mixed with urine all over ones open bleeding body “ contest, well he’s got that one hands down. Such a genius.
Somehow I found myself down a YouTub rabbit hole & listening to the dozens of covers of this song. I really like this version.
I'm doing the same. I do like this cover, soulful and sincere but still can't get past Dwight Yoakum's version.
GG Allin has an epic cover of this.
I been to the Pioneer Chicken stand back in the day, 32 years clean now. Great cover of one of my all time favorites
Tonite I discovered this fabulous cover of Carmelita. This version is the best Timeless and hauntingly beautiful.
I agree. This was the first version I heard then started researching. One of my fav songwriters, covered by Jackson, Dwight w/ Flaco and the man himself!!!!!
Yep, any of our fellow travelers from the 12-step fellowships can definitely relate to this awesome ballad from the 1970s... R.I.P. Warren Zevon
& such a song
It's my first time hearing this version,, Very nicely done sung with emotion.
Had no idea he recorded this! My all time fav song
Me either I love Counting Crows
I like this version, though I had no idea that it even existed until now! Wikipedia has a pretty cool article on the many artists that have covered this great song. Amazing.
this is a perfect cover of this great song .. thank you

Well it’s hard to argue with Linda!
Thomas Hermann listen to Cross Canadian Ragweed cover this song

This was recorded in 2000 for the album I-10 chronicles
Yes. Why, yes it was!!! I think it’s a pretty great cover.
Gg allyn did one nice version of carmelita
my favorite besides the original... also deer tick, willie deville and dwight yoakam are some honorable cover mentions
John Jackson Browne does a good cover. GG’s is great. This one sounds like Adam is gonna breakdown crying the whole time. Kind of annoying lol
Arguably the best
Fuck yeah he did! You FELT IT when GG did it!
Warren would be proud of this version.
Where can one purchase a pearl handle deck
At a gun show
I am a die hard Zevon. That being said, I think this is better then most versions!
O.K., I'll bite WHO else (of musical notoriety) exactly has actually recorded and released this song commercially besides the Zdude and Linda? Until tonight, this was the only other version I have ever encountered.
@@attygarland6909 GG Allen, Jackson Brown not to mention a plethora of random TH-cam covers that I've seen. Most don't even matter though.
Dwight Yoakam.
"County wont give me no more methadone" God damn I been there
The Pioneer Chicken Stand line got me. I fucking LOVE chicken
Bill Gotti I'm there right now
quit failing your UA's then!
I live in the south, we have to pay for our methadone down here. Damn liquid handcuffs. Hardest narcotic to kick. Just my experience
@@gregorygraham3251 thats the damn truth, seen it cuff too many... worse than the boy imo
Check out Linda rondstats version. Its beautiful
Bounced here from Linda. ......one of the last two rock groups I dug....this guy always makes !e think of a short haired brunette stripper who danced to cc every time...night life uptown memories.
This is a great version of this masterpiece. It sounds a little different from the one Duritz released solo, at least I think he did one on his own.
Warren, too, for a time, was a 12 stepper. I heard him speak once. He said, Hi, Im Norman....
It's my favorite, next to Linda Ronstadt for the female version...
mikebtko ; brilliant - just gotta love counting crows.
No one mentioned that Willie Nelson is playing acoustic on this track.
the only good thing about this cover is Willie's playing.
Actually, the dobro is David Hidalgo, electric guitar Randy Jacobs and the slide is David Immergluck.
As a recovering heroin addict. This song is soooooouldeep
Big factssss
Yep, this one should be included in the N.A. Hymnal .. :-D
That's what a friend of mine said when he was listening to it. He has since passed after yrs of tough living. I miss him!
As much of a Zevon fan as I am I feel like this version is even better than the original.
Doesn't sound like the original. Great! I love covers of awesome tunes! Thanx!
Thank you for posting. Gotta say tho I'm not a fan of this cover but love the song
I'm with you Sugar but in fairness I am such a huge Warren Zevon fan that I tend to never like covers of his songs
Adam sounds like Dennis Locorrier from Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show on this tune.
Has EVERYONE covered this song?
No, I didn't even hear about this version until tonight and this is one of my favorite Zdude tunes .. Only other person/band I know that did it was Linda R.
heard this version 25 yrs ago still the best
was recorded in 2000 as a song on the I-10 chronicles...
Was released only in 1999 ...
@@blazingchris5048 CC was even around back then???
Warren Zevon (+ gitaarsolo ! ) and Willie DeVille have the best version. This one is too mellow.
wrong
Willy de Ville,mein absoluter Favorit
Seine Version ist für mich einfach die Beste.
This song was born in Chicago
Sorry, but that's Zevon's own tune .. although Linda R. gave it a very good shot .. kinda strange though hearing a gal singing about another gal, but given today vs. 40 years ago maybe that isn't all that unusual anymore .. :-x
gal?
The best version ever!

Methadone, dilaudids and heroin. You know the story if you been there
What's dilaudid all about?
Dilaudid is considered the best pharmaceutical opiate by most junkies. Watch 'Drugstore Cowboy"
Dilaudid is good food.
I forgot this existed and BAM!....it popped into my head. I like it better than Zevons even.
I tell ya .. why don't we all just dump on the man .. ? GC he WROTE the song and no one sings a tune better than the person who wrote (and lived it) .. at least from the heart, maybe not technically ...
Much love to Warren but the best rendition in my opinion was from GG allin 💉🥺💉🥺💉😔🔫
Don imus got me here
Elrod Hendrix Please explain. I watched Imus back when he was on MSNBC. Was this recently?
ANUS IN THE MORNING! :-D
gg's was much better
Cody Rice I agree. I think Linda did it best tho
.... No
Dwight live version is great.
Cody Rice dam. Right
Not sure if I agree with that. Now I will say that for the ”smearing feces mixed with urine all over ones open bleeding body “ contest, well he’s got that one hands down. Such a genius.
Beautiful song, but this version just doesn't do it any justice : (
@oregon jackalope i feel it more with Warren. But to each their own
