@@talealifts She ran along the ground towards the ocean, and was hiding behind the cliff underneath the castle. She's an old dragon but she's crafty. And that seems to be her signature move.
@@talealifts I think this can happen if the timing is right, but I don’t think this can be planned. My guess is that apparently after Vhagar dropped onto the ground (I’m so surprised that Vhagar didn’t seem to break anything on impact), she took off again towards the sea, probably off the cliff to use some of that extra space, and did a 180 turn. The whole time she was probably pretty close to the water until she started to ascend when she’s near the cliff again. That is when Meleys happened to cross that spot on top. I don’t think Vhagar can hover down there to hide and suddenly gain so much speed that Meleys didn’t even have time to react. Also both dragons cannot see each until the last moment, so I doubt this can be timed or planned by Aemond. This thing should be very unlikely to happen in this kind of air combat, unless Rhaenys and Meleys are just very unlucky.
Melys death at the jaws of Vhagar is very sad to watch if you think about it: Before Vhagar was claimed by Aemond, she was the dragon of Laena but before that she was the Dragon of Baelon the Brave (Viserys I and Daemon's father). Before Melys was Rhaenys rider, she was ridden by Alyssa Targaryen (Baelon's Sister/Wife and Viserys I and Daemon's Mother).
House of the Dragon has truly elevated its game with this episode. The dragon-on-dragon fight was incredibly intense, and the choreography was outstanding imo. I'm also enjoying the Harrenhal scenes; the Curse of Harrenhal is one of my favorite theories in all of GRRM's books. Say all you want but this show is really hitting its stride!
I thought the actress for Alys was great. I was afraid she'd be cringe because she's a super powerful witch and all that. But I was loving every damn second of her performance with Daemon. She really gives 0 f*cks about the dragons and I love her for that.
Aemond is now second in line. He might soon head the Green faction. I guess going after the throne and teach your bully brother a final lesson was too much of a temptation
@@stefanvas6984oh, he is gonna become the leader of the Greens now from the next episode. And luck had nothing to do with it. Everything Aemond did in this episode was just cold calculation. He knew Meleys was gonna be tough for Vhagar to take on as she's the fastest dragon alive while Vhagar is old and slow. So, he let Aegon go in in hopes that Sunfyre would wear Meleys off enough for Vhagar to get a sneak attack on her. Also, if Aegon died in the process (which Aemond must've also known since Meleys is no joke) it would be a double win for him as then he would be the king. Then, when he lands near Aegon and Sunfyre, he could've killed him, but probably thought better of it because he knew he'd be taking it too far. There's always the risk of some Master discovering the sword cut marks on the dead body. Plus, he also didn't know how Crispin Cole would've reacted to witnessing him murdering his own brother, the king. Cole probably wouldn't have done anything but there was still a chance. Anyways, that's my take on Aemond in this episode.
Eve Best, we love you and will miss you! Congratulations on your portrayal of Rhaenys, she definitely has made a huge impact, not just in HotD but in George R. R. Martin's universe as a whole.
Eve Best ate every fricking scene. She was relentless. I find it funny she said she doesn't like to look at herself on-screen and despite that, she carried such a strong presence. She wasn't as big a character as I wish she had been, but again, even though her dialogue was smaller than I would've liked, she was always felt in every scene. Slay, Red Queen, Rhaenys Targaryen Baratheon, The Hammer of the Greens.
@@DarkHarlequin Maybe next episode? in the promo trailer we hear some voices from the past during the Harrenhal scenes for next episode. It sounds like we might see Laena or at least hear again. There also a possibility we see Aemma again.
I'm a 100% team Black, but I love how complex Aegon's character is! Yes he is a spoiled little brat but he is anything but a psychopath... I'm so curious about his path. And Sunfyre is so beautiful! I loved the sceen they greeted each other... so sweet.
Dragons really find their riders don't they? Sunfire as a lively, rash, spirited Dragon found Aegon. And Vhagar the clever old predator has found a fellow patient predator in Aemond 😉
She didnt toss Vhagar to the ground, both dragons were falling to the ground. When vhagar released meleys, meleys was able to stay airborne due to being more agile than vhagar is.
Long live Rhaenys of the House Targaryen. The Queen Who Never Was but Should Have Been. Dying with Meleys the Red Queen with both accepting their fate is likely how both wanted to go out. You could see it in their eyes that they weren’t living through this one🥺
There's a moment in this episode, when Alicent is looking for Visery's books, that Aegon makes his guards leave. Then, they stumble on upon the other and only one of them bows down before leaving the room. I laughed so hard at that moment, because it was an amazing way to convey how none of their guards actually know anything about their job. They're just a bunch of brats spoiled by their king. Gosh, forget about the dragons. I love those little day-to-day interactions and how they show the arch of the characters.
Man how experienced Meleys was as a dragon. That counter on Agon and sunfire was incredible. She even slammed Vaghar on ground, destroyed half of cole's army and killed that hightower knight. All this by herself when she was outnumbered so badly by dragons and armies.
I didn't see gwayne hightower die. Sunfyre was no match for her dragon just like vhagar grabbed her dragon easily with its claws and latter snatched it by the neck pretty forcefully
I also love how Rhaenys was steelset on going to finish off on top that day but Vaghar just had other plans! I loved on how Meleys looked at Rhaenys saying "I am ready!" and the last look before dying saying goodbye!
As much as Aemond hates to admit it, even the Maesters will write that his plan wouldn'tve worked without a two-dragon ambush, Maelys and Raenys were simply FAR more experienced than he was. The blast to the face ended any hope Maelys had of catching Vaeghar's sneak attack, Rhaenys should've retreated after realizing she was outnumbered, even if Sunfyre was quickly decommissioned.
I cried for sunfyre and Aegon. I felt so much empathy with Aegon it was surprising. Tom is an amazing actor. The dragons were the main actors though. Meleys was such a good girl 😢
because she wants power and is still bitter over what she had to go through to become the queen and have kids with an old man, as if those weren't her decisions to accept the marriage proposal
unintentionally funny things this ep: 1. cole being knocked out for the ambush he orchestrated 2. daemond pulling a bran and playing haunted mansion in harrenhall 3. rhaenyra also pulling an aegon and wanting to ride into battle 4. vaghar hiding behind a castle wall while being as big as said wall 5. vaghar's friendly fire squashing 2 men like melons while taking off 6. rhaeneys sacrificing herself and her dragon for a castle no one cares about
@@AnimeLover-mn2wg this is season 7-8 level writing. Aemond's character was assassinated like many characters were in the last seasons. And worse than that they turned him into a complete idiot. The guy openly atempts regicide in front of the king's army, he tries to take out one of the few battle worthy dragons that his own side has (when their enemies already have more dragons) and then aproaches to finish Aegon with a sword right in front of Sunfyre who despite wounded would have still blasted him with fire for it.
@@masterplokoon8803 if I didn’t read the books I would t hate this show at all. But because I read the books I was expecting better or for it to go exactly like that. But I have to separate the two.
@@AnimeLover-mn2wg even taking into acount only the show, Aemond was portrayed as a rash but relatively smart and intelligent young man, his actions here are purely idiotic even if we haven't read about his loyalty to his brother from books. Show Aemond never gave the impression that he would be dumb enough to atack one of the few dragons on his side when the enemy has a numerical advantadge on dragons. And not only that but also trying openly kill the king in front of his men? And the final scene of him aproaching Aegon with a sword while Sunfyre is still very much capable of killing someone who stabbs Aegon who is right in front of him. And even in the show in the end of season 1 and beggining of season 2 Aegon and Aemond seemed to have gotten closer only for it to be ruined by the brothel scene.
Or when your friend turned opponent who pumped out protected bastards was a better mum than you are to your trueborns, game over. But then again, Alicent learned by example from a father who practically pimped her out for his political ambitions.
Moral of the story: don't bully anyone...especially don't keep bullying that particular bullied...That bullied person will become the bigger villain and destroy all and everything.
Didn’t notice this at first - when Aegon pushes the gold glass pitcher off the table, it has a dragon around the bottom. It not only crashes to the floor and breaks, he steps on it on the way out of the room. Foreshadowing, indeed.
If Alicent wanted a puppet, maybe she should have learned how to be a better puppeteer. You don’t say those things to a man (let alone her own son) whose son was just assassinated and who is fighting for the throne due to your actions putting him there in the first place. Regardless of her resentment for him, Alicent needed to handle Aegon far more carefully.
Alicent just complains about everything, hypocritically criticizing everyone and never takes responsibility for her actions I hate watching her scenes, she's insufferable
Personally I prefer S06 over any other season . But regarding what you said . I think the battle behind the wall in S07 was very good . And also spoils of war .

This wouldn't be as good without the build up! This wouldn't be as good without the build up! Yes! Thank you George for standing your ground in the writers room! This is where GOT fucked up, they made the elementary assumption that since we have big reactions to this type of episode that this is all we want, it's not! This was unbelievably epic, but it's that way because of all the build up! All the council meetings, the planning. So when "enough with the clever plans" comes to fruition, we feel the weight of it. This is how you write fantasy. Thank you George, this world is your baby. I'm so happy to be back in a Westeros that makes sense. Thank you HBO for giving this it's true effort. Thank you to everyone working on the show, game of thrones is back baby! 💯👏🏼💯👏🏼
@@Hear.myvoice I know it's easy to think that given the last seasons of GOT, but by the time season 6 came around, George was very well aware that D&D were ruining his story. He was already working on HOTD and others. There was a featurette a week or 2 ago with George talking about a meeting with the writers about where to start HOTD. They went more towards George's ideas. I'm not saying he is king, and his word is final, but the writers clearly respected his visions by starting it with the death of King Jaheares. He was already mad at D&D for what they were doing with GOT so he checked out. That's why I understand you may think that way, but it's not the case. George's word still holds sway in Westeros, and thank the Gods he does 💯
@@Hear.myvoice I think you need to reread bud lol. I said I don't think George's word is law in the writing room. But that his voice did still hold power. It's his world. And if they were just saying George is involved for marketing, why was it specifically stated in the last few GOT seasons that George was not a part of it? That completely goes against that. Some of the writers wanted to start HOTD at Viserys' death. Yea. Literally would have lost all of the first season. He wanted to start even further back before King Jaheares death. They leaned towards George's idea. So of course there are going to be scenes, and possibly entire episodes that George didn't write. That's what happens when there's a team of writers lol. But my point in the first place was emphasizing how important the build up of season 1 was. That these episodes only work when we feel the weight of the moments. Without season 1, this battle tonight would have just been good filmmaking. Kind of like the last couple GOT seasons. That was my point. So as far as George's involvement, it's just speculation. But to think he has no sway would be an assumption arrived at prematurely.
Yup. That's why I prefer the earlier GOT battle scenes that were not part of a "battle" episode cause they were built up and also had an element of spontaneity (eg hardhome). Like anything could have happened, it wasn't a given that they'd be a battle. I know a lot of people loved the battle of the bastards and it was good don't get me wrong but...we knew what was coming even those who didn't know the book canon, and it was most of the episode so (do appreciate that there is always a twist in the battle episodes.
There's a moment when Alicent is talking to Aegon and she asks him "What ideas do you have?" and she can't contain a smile, like even she knows how limited is her kid. I was loosing my ass at that moment. She went truly savage on him. Dear lord.
Deamon was right . He should have went directly to Vhagar with Meyles. They would’ve absolutely destroyed the old dragon together . Now it’s time Someone rides Virmithor .
Thank you to all the people that bring to life such an amazing character like the Queen Who never was. And especially thanks to Eve Best for being so perfect to be Rhaenys Targaryen. We’re gonna miss her ❤️
The moment I cried was seeing a dying Meleys looking back at Rhaenys one last time before she passed and The Queen Who Never Was died a true Dragon Rider’s Death. She will never be forgotten! Also this episode made me feel so bad for Aegon, not as a King but as a character. He has these insecurities and well having a strained relationship with Alicent because let’s face it an excuse me for being so blunt, who’s a MASSIVE bitch as well as a horrible mother to him. Adding more fuel to the fire SHE’S the reason why Aegon got on Sunfyre and sent him to state where he would never be the same again.
I think Alicent Failed as a mother to see that Aegon is still a Teenager That craves a mother attention and fails to Spot Aemond’s animosity for his brother and how it will affect them
And the way she fails to protect Helaena when they decide to put her on a wagon and cart her dead son around town and she doesn't comfort Aegon after his son is murdered and he's sobbing and Aemond ends up with no respect for her... she's the worst mom in King's Landing!!! Aegon never grew up and Helaena and Aemond had to grow up too fast. Never make a little girl with daddy issues into a mother.
I wish the well-directed action sequence in this episode is what we experienced in the final 2 seasons of GoT. Alan Taylor as director is phenomenal so far. Nonetheless, this show has definitely rekindled people's love for the Song of Ice and Fire universe.
Thank you Eve Best for bringing Rhaenys to life and making her one of my favorite characters! Long Live Rhaenys Targaryen, Queen who Never Was, Long may you reign in our hearts!!! 😢❤👸🏼
I am very sorry for Aegon, the poor guy who was humiliated by his own relatives, trampled on his courage, did not support him morally in any way, forced him to take desperate measures. There is a difference in how Rhaenyra loves her children, her son Jace also wants to fly to prove that he is brave, but she behaves correctly with him, shows love and refrains from impulsive actions, while Alicent humiliates her son and tramples on his self-esteem, making it clear that he is useless. Aemond is a traitor. For the second time, he solves his bullying problems with rash actions.
You know the episode is great when you still get terribly devastated even if you already know what would happen. Rhaenys and Meleys are queens in their own rights.
I've watched the histories and lore of game of thrones before i already knew that Rhaenys and Meleys will die at rook's rest but watching it happen broke my heart but to see them die the way they did, to see them fight to the very end during the episode made the feeling a little better. To Rhaenys and Meleys.
@@Dolorous_Edd_ Aemond does not try to kill his brother in the books, and he and Sunfyre put up a decent fight against Maelys until Vhagar clumsily lands on them both. The showrunners however never fail to shit on Aegon and the greens at every opportunity
@@Dolorous_Edd_ Sunfyre did most of the damage to Meleys in the books and vaghar came in put an end. It's nearly not as one sided as it was shown in the series.
@@Dolorous_Edd_ No it does not my guy. Both Aegon and Aemond fly together towards Meleys. Rhaenys knows she cannot take on both and is going to die, she attacks Sunfyre as he is the smallest of all of them. Aemond with Vhagar descends from above and has no choice but to use dracarys since Meleys is biting into Sunfyre's neck. If Aemond does not do anything Sunfyre's neck could be ripped apart and Aegon will fall to his death, Aemond then burns both of them and all three dragons tumble down. Only Aemond flies away while Aegon is burnt. The battle is changed to showcase that Aegon wants to be respected but the show fails at this. We needed more Sunfyre scenes before the battle, he is the most beautiful dragon in the world, and with Aegon, they have the closest bond any dragon rider has ever had. During season 1 we should have gotten Aegon and Sunfyre flying after his coronation around the red keep. But what we get is more shock moments and girlboss scenes which do nothing to drive the plot forward or make the female cast interesting. There is a reason why this season so far has had less viewership and lower ratings then season 1 so far.
I think episode also just tells us Daemon’s significance in this conflict, he is the most skilled dragon rider with a battle-worn dragon and the savage required for dragon warfare
when R said 'there are those who have mistaken caution as weakness' while looking at the war table and trying to figure out why Cole was going for Rook's Rest, i thought she was going to bring on the battle strategy, but then... "I'll go" WTF?!
Rhenys expressions were absolutely exquisite in this episode, her face said a lot during the battle if not her words.....RHANEYS the queen who will always be❤❤❤The Red Queen ❤❤❤
Every aspect of this episode was NEEDED and wanted. It was the dragons relationships with their riders. It was the cocky men on the ground, Cole and Gwaine... realising this war is going to be so much bloodier and "dirty" than they could ever have imagined. It was the subplots like Rheanys recognising her husbands Bastard sons and wanting them to be honored despite their birth. It was seeing Alicent just brutally telling her son Aegon his worth is nothing despite ascending him to the throne. It was everything and more.

Makes me sad it wasn’t more present in the show with Arya and Tywin there. Though the role of Jaqen and the Faceless Men was pretty cool too.
Its already better than the last 4 seasons of GOT
I hope those who say they want only say "phenomenal". There is nothing else to describe this masterpiece we are witnessing
I thought the actress for Alys was great.
I was afraid she'd be cringe because she's a super powerful witch and all that. But I was loving every damn second of her performance with Daemon.
She really gives 0 f*cks about the dragons and I love her for that.
I really loved Eve Best's portrayal . no unnecessary words or movements just an amazing smile and eyes
Aemond was gonna straight up become a kingslayer and kinslayer at the same time. Aegon is lucky Cristian showed up when he did.
Anyways, that's my take on Aemond in this episode.
he was gonna sheath his sword but the perception looked otherwise

Yep. Definitely on my top 5 fav GoT universe characters for sure. Long live the Queen that should have been, and her dragon Meleys the Red Queen.

That Sunfyre head bump with Aegon was cute. I imagined him saying something like "where you been, you little b*stared? Hop on let's go have fun". 😅
Aegon's bond with sunfyre is unreal. ❤
Are we going to see Viserys in Daemon's hallucinations? Meleys and Rhaenys will be missed. Poor Sunfyre.
I am secretly hoping for a tiny bit more of Paddy in Daemons visions 😁

@@DarkHarlequin Maybe next episode? in the promo trailer we hear some voices from the past during the Harrenhal scenes for next episode. It sounds like we might see Laena or at least hear again. There also a possibility we see Aemma again.
It happened! Woohoo 🎉

I'm a 100% team Black, but I love how complex Aegon's character is! Yes he is a spoiled little brat but he is anything but a psychopath... I'm so curious about his path. And Sunfyre is so beautiful! I loved the sceen they greeted each other... so sweet.
Love Aemond. Spectacular aura each time he has a role.
Yall nailed the cries of Sunfyre. His cries will haunt me for a long time. Along with the way Meleys looked at Rhaenys til she stopped breathing. 😭 😭
I love Vhagar on the grass waiting for her boy instruction.
Dragons really find their riders don't they? Sunfire as a lively, rash, spirited Dragon found Aegon. And Vhagar the clever old predator has found a fellow patient predator in Aemond 😉
The way Meleys tossed Vhagar to the ground was EPIC
She didnt toss Vhagar to the ground, both dragons were falling to the ground. When vhagar released meleys, meleys was able to stay airborne due to being more agile than vhagar is.
Long live Rhaenys of the House Targaryen. The Queen Who Never Was but Should Have Been. Dying with Meleys the Red Queen with both accepting their fate is likely how both wanted to go out. You could see it in their eyes that they weren’t living through this one🥺

The music elevated the whole feel of the battle. 10/10
I'll miss Rhaenys IMMENSELY!! RIP!! Wait until Corlys finds out - God bless anyone that gets in his way!
What’s Corlys going to do against Vaghar, exactly?
@@alexman378not Corlys, but Daemon and Caraxes...
@@FuLLL04 Yup, they’re the actual serious contenders.

The dragons were the main actors though. Meleys was such a good girl 😢

so hard to watch. knew it was coming and still cried my eyes out
I’ve cried as well. It was heartbreaking.
unintentionally funny things this ep:
1. cole being knocked out for the ambush he orchestrated
2. daemond pulling a bran and playing haunted mansion in harrenhall
3. rhaenyra also pulling an aegon and wanting to ride into battle
4. vaghar hiding behind a castle wall while being as big as said wall
5. vaghar's friendly fire squashing 2 men like melons while taking off
6. rhaeneys sacrificing herself and her dragon for a castle no one cares about
This episode was so intense that I lost my breath, literally, and cried, not out of sadness, but out of shock. Wow!

Aemond and Vahgar make a scary combo. Crafty and experienced.
Somehow, the most heartbreaking moments were Sunfyre and Meleys's screams.
When Cersei is a better mother than you, you know you’ve messed up.
Or when your friend turned opponent who pumped out protected bastards was a better mum than you are to your trueborns, game over. But then again, Alicent learned by example from a father who practically pimped her out for his political ambitions.

- Aegon “Jon Snow” Targaryen, perhaps
And Melys! Dont forget her loyal dragon.
And thankfully never was
The Queen that should have been. She would have had a smoother time getting the Lords to be loyal.
Alicent just complains about everything, hypocritically criticizing everyone and never takes responsibility for her actions
I hate watching her scenes, she's insufferable

AMEN!!!
@@ShepardOfficial To be honest I don't feel George has a place in the writers room 🤣
I'm not saying he doesn't have, I say I don't see it.
Dear lord.
Instead of “nothing” Alicent could have said, “be a good father and husband.”

The music, the framing, the tone and colors, dialog, acting, all of the 'little' things- this was an AMAZING piece od tv show.
