    The Defender is an all-terrain vehicle, produced under this name by the Land Rover manufacturer since 1991, but in a form born in 1983 (the Land Rover 90 and 110), it is itself the direct heiress of the original 1948 Land Rover. The first Land Rover prototype was built in 1947.

    The Land Rover trademark belongs to the Indian manufacturer Tata Motors since March 2008, after being bought by BMW in 1994 then by Ford in 2000
    Land Rover celebrated 68 years of history today as the last of the current Defenders was produced at its famous Solihull production facility.
    To mark the occasion Land Rover invited more than 700 current and former Solihull employees involved in the production of Series Land Rover and Defender vehicles to see and drive some of the most important vehicles from its history, including the first pre-production 'Huey' Series I as well as the last vehicle off the production line, a Defender 90 Heritage Soft Top.
    At the same time, Land Rover announced a new Heritage Restoration Programme, which will be based on the site of the existing Solihull production line.

    I bought my last LR almost 2 decades ago (130 crew cab ) Now it`s like a cross breed between a bus, a tractor, a house & a toolbox . Not a city car for sure , but in the bush is the comfort zone .When I watched the production line craftsman taking so much care I thought he`s probably the last person who looked after mine , because I sure don`t . It`s just there everyday . Oh yeah when it`s time for a clean , the main tools are a leaf bower & pressure washer inside & out . So I do hope they keep making them , because they work .

    For all of its faults, or more accurately characteristics, which stem from a time when Britain's manufacturing was crawling out of war orientated production and needed to export, the world is now much a poorer place without it. My only hope is that it will be manufactured in India/Pakistan like some of the old Coventry Masseys are!

    I'm a proud owner of a Land Rover 6x6 Extra Cab Defender initially prototyped for the Australian mining industry in December 2015. Orginally constructed in UK, imported under the guidance of Land Rover UK, its chassis, cab and driveline extensively modified in Australia utilizing a variety of engineering companies whom specialized in heavy vehicle mining compliance. Part of this reengineering was the replacement of the Isuzu engine and gearbox with a Cummins diesel, ZF 6 speed gearbox, and the fitment of Dana differentials, portals and tranfer case. Unfortunately, interest in the final vehicle, though fully compliant, was non existence due to both cost and production ending. The prototype was left abandoned in a storage warehouse and forgotten. Due to non payment of storage fees, the prototype was auctioned. Again no interest was shown and I was able to purchases this vehicle, after negotiation, for AU$2000. This unique vehicle is undertaking a ground up rebuild before being returned to limited road use.

      Joe Dulewich : Due to my own work commitments, I'm a engineer working in the mining industry, restoration is proceeding at a slow pace. The chassis is complete, driveline rebuilt and installed, leaving the body, both cab and tray, which is in surprisingly good condition for a prototype, to be refurbished as they seem to of suffered the worst of the abuse. What has surprised me is how easy parts are to obtain, as little of the vehicle is actually Land Rover. Maybe 30% genuine. Really only the cab. So give it another 8 to 10 months and the Defender, which it is based on, will be resurrected. Just as a footnote, I had a chance to spend a week evaluating this vehicle when it was doing the mine site rounds to generate interest. I was impressed with its capabilities back then, not knowing I would eventually be its saviour. 👍👍

    So So Sad why the hell do we as a nation just give up on our engineering skills. If it was cost just add 30% you would still sell new Land Rovers ??????????????
    yes we all know they had their faults BUT AND A BIG BUT They always get you home. In over 40 years of driving them not once have i been taken home on an A A or RAC truck !!
    all you need as a tool kit is a hamer and an adjustable spanner Job done ..........And if they are that bad how come 70% of all ever made are still on the roads ???orat least usable ???
    what on earth are the 3rd world countries going to use now ??? Oh yes another company no doubt one day will start making them again or land rover will as they now do with the classic
    range rover but sadly at silly money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry forgot it's called progress how silly of me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      And that's why the Jeep Wrangler (even the newer ones with the shitty no low-down torque Minivan V6 engine) reigns supreme. Dirt cheap for Base versions and built to Last...none of the questionable reliability-durability bullshit associated with a G-Wagon or Land Rover. Land Cruisers,Nissan, and Mitsubishi offerings are attractive to compared to the Wrangler, but they are not widely available in Key Markets or affordable even for the Base versions anymore.

      Owners don't drive like idiots and because of that rarely come to grief.
      For instance
      On the motorway (in my 110) l sit at 60mph and let the rest of the world go by.
      On the roads l stick to the speed limits. Why go faster? My Landy will get there at its own pace
      lt's much more relaxing as well.

    • @matdooley
      @matdooley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      depends greatly on the year of manufacture .they were like a bottle of wine ,you never knew what you had until you opened the bottle. .for a stress free life stick with the jeep or toyota .

      @johnrgm3047 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They're as reliable as you maintain them to be. Mine has given me 12 years totally dependable service so far and it still looks and drives like a virtually new car. No leaks, no rattles, no funny noises. The late TD5 models like mine were probably the best of the lot in terms of build quality & mechanical reliability. I certainly reckon I got a good one.

    • @matdooley
      @matdooley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I bought one 7 years ago and absolutely love it .it has never been in a garage in all that time ,not even for a service . anything that needed doing i did myself .If you are anyways handy they are fairly easy to maintain .. The LR dealers near me are like modern highway robbers . parts too dear and as for labour costs ,forget it ,.Was a pity to see the model come to an end .

    Would have loved a brand-new Defender, but one thing we cannot do in the USA is decide we want a vehicle the government disapproves of.

    • @70Kenny
      @70Kenny 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nippy Preet Tesla is a bit pricey, but a superb car from what I've read about them. I myself prefer simple vehicles: Manual transmission, crank windows, no GPS and endlessly customizable. The Land Rover Defender is perfect for that. But "Federalizing" a vehicle for the USA market is often too expensive for the manufacturers overseas. Land Rover didn't see enough profit in Federalizing the Defender for our market, especially since Land Rover/Range Rover is a luxury brand here. They didn't want to compete with the original Jeep.

      Warsame Adam they were all aluminum , but had NOT noticed they went to steel., back in the 1950s they all had the spare tyre on its bonnet , and in the rear was a large hole for PTO. most in the West Indies, ran water pumps, for irrigation, the 3 in my family were RH drive, 4 spd 2 blue, 1 green . No diesels were made for them , all petrol.

    One of the most pointless vehicles for a tall person the world has ever seen. If I shut the door on one I have to lean towards the middle of the vehicle because the bloody drivers door is so intrusive. In my last job I refused this vehicle and refused to work. It’s the most improper vehicle for multiple persons travelling even just a small distance.

    The worst car ever made. Changing ownership to Indian company make no difference as it is the same culture of quality - no quality. That is why you see Land Rover more time in mechanic than on the road. It’s funny watching history change. Once British owned and made now Indian owned and made so how you could be proud about your cars when they are made by Indian company. And the money goes to India. Lol

    • @stevenramsay6691
      @stevenramsay6691 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      abazdarhon at least get your facts right, they are not Indian made. JLR are entirely British engineered and built as they always have been. They do now have some foreign factories to keep up with demand and get past Chinese protectionism.
