The best conductor to ever live in my opinion
I've always loved his ability to insert himself into the performances like the Return of Ulysses to his Homeland by Monteverdi, and the Sorceress by Handel. Both exquiste productions and performances! RIP he is definitely missed. His intense gaze and passion he became the MUSIC!

There is no question that Bach was "religious" - a Christian.
This man is a musicologist, NOT a musician. Bach doesn't need style experts who follow weird rules or use period instruments with their flat moans, but interpreters who exploit the score and discover something new that perhaps not even the author suspected. Harnoncourt is only a sloppy translator of notes, his performers just grotesque as his gestures in conducting.
This kind of comments are the reason why internet is not for the elderly. Too many random people who think their opinions are relevant or important.
@@patoxalapa617 Nailed it, although I know a lot of elders that have good sense on the internet, to me is crazy that someone is able to judge the work of 50+ years, from one of the most respected musicians in the 20th century (yes, he was both a musicologist and musician, you can be both), who recorded all Bach cantatas for the first time in history, based on disliking period instruments or "flat moans". One thing is to dislike something and that's totally ok (I loathe at the idea of hearing Karajan conducting Bach) but to diminish someone's life devotion to work is just sad and low.
Oh, so you met Bach and know what he meant in his music? Harnoncourt's approach seems (at least to me) to be much closer to real baroque music and real Bach than other 20th century "romanticised" interpretations of Bach. You simply can not play historical music without being just a little bit of a musichologist yourself, otherwise you will fail miserably. And if you listened to just a little bit of Harnoncourt's Bach or Mozart, or if you read his two books "Music as speech" and "The Musical dialogue", you wouldn't say that he is a "sloppy translator of notes" and you will actually realise that he was a living genious. His ideas were ahead of his time, but in the same time based on an endless research of historical documents. I don't know what made you write such a miserable comment.
