    Hey Poppy! I just wanna say that I knew this Chinese lady(Evelyn) when I just saw her in this video immediately!!! She was my IELTS teacher before I went to university in USA. It was five years ago. I couldn’t believe I can still meet her here!!! OMG, this is amazing! PLEASE Tell her that I miss her, and I’ve already backed to Shenzhen after I’ve done my college life, hope we can meet someday and I really want to thank her! Good job Poppy and thank you for sharing your life in Shenzhen:D

    She is such a special person. I was so impressed by the way she handled scalper on one of her video. She sees thing in a broad perspective. Not like the usual response one would get from the internet. She sees it from a human-nature point of view, rather than your usual racial point of view. She totally disarmed the scalper and ended up being friend with him. That is the most amazing thing I ever see in my life. There will be no racist if everybody forget their own country of origin, and interact as human to human like she does. But how can a young lady like her being able to do that is beyond me.

    • @108mtsan
      @108mtsan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's because maybe only the racist ones happen to make responses in the internet. Which is why you assume internet responses are usually racist. But the fact is the internet behaves the same way as public opinion.

    Hi Poppy,
    I've seen a few of your videos now. My passion was a writer that accidentally became a filmmaker.
    Despite years of commitment & sacrifice it just fell to pieces. I ran as far as I could & it became a new thing to travel & meet people that weren't so driven by capitalistic goals so I stopped comparing myself to people that I usually thought were better than me.
    I have met some great people & it's saved me. These videos help me feel better about my new start in my life. I salute you. Hope Guatemala treats you well.

    Basically, anyone who isn't any ethnic Chinese makes an effort to speak Mandarin or other chinese dialects with a Chinese (whether it be a Chinese from China or an overseas Chinese), we might think your pronunciation is off but we don't criticise. We think it's a good effort and therefore the responses are of the encouraging types, instead of laughing at it. The fact that you try is appreciated.

    Love watching your video. I am Chinese and have been living in Canada for many years. I usually don't have a lot of chances to go back, and I believe the last time that I visited China was in 2012. Nevertheless, I still have a strong emotional connection with the country, and it has always been a dream for me to wanna go back. (just pure traveling to different cities, sites around the country, no family commitment). The reason why I love watching your videos is that, your video is full of enthusiasm and positivity, that I can literally feel myself being there through your video camera, being to those cities that you have visited, sites that you have been. Sorry about that I may have been little bit sentimental, but I just don't have that much courage to backpacking around China, and it's always been a thing that I strongly desire to do. (I will eventually do it maybe in couple years, and probably go back to China for my retirement, as Chinese call it fallen leafs go back to the root) Anyway, make long story short, good video, keep it up! If you have a chance, take a visit to Xi'an, and you're gonna be staggered and experience a whole different part of China. BTW, I am not from Xi'an, (I'm from Yangzhou), my girlfriend is. LOL

      Thank you so much! You should backpack around China! Take a group of friends, then it will be less scary. It’s not always easy traveling on your own. I do it because I think it makes me a stronger person but I do prefer traveling with other people. And yes I do want to visit Xi’an! I’m working on my plans for 2018 and hopefully it includes a lot more cities in China!

      RespectOthers , what sort of tool of war are you? What is your horse riding via heel spurs interest? How many travelers do you follow? Why do hide you true self? Those who demand respect are those who show false respect and have goals to cheat and subjugate others. Good people have respect without being told, those who fake respect, are those who will lack future honor for what they respected.
      The fog of you page, is a kkk symbol for the mythical fiction is the only history we allow or enjoy, because our reality is wars and ambushing from the fog we hide in. I'd the smartest and most beauty are not all murdered or destroyed by means beyond the short sighted politeness, then "the fog" was not good enough.
      The fog is death to the better races. Why is your history garbage, and your reliance on a future purely fiction rooted, not planned? Why do you insist none white history is myth, and fake respect when you retell to distort and destroy Biblical and Greek history, real history, as non-white race myths we are polite about in church, but will never honor or keep?

    We Chinese are very proud of China, even though many of us like myself are not China citizens but rather overseas Chinese. We all have a deep connection to our ancestral homeland. My ancestors came to Singapore 200 years ago from China just like most of the Chinese-majority population in Singapore. We still celebrate Chinese New Year, uphold Chinese traditions and learn Chinese as a compulsory subject in school. Like overseas Chinese who are citizens of countries they are born in, such as Chinese Vietnamese, Chinese Thai, Chinese Filippino, Chinese Malaysians and Chinese Indonesians for example, even though we are not Chinese nationality and we are also part of the ethnicity of our birth country, we still remember and treasure our Chinese ethnicity and roots. Most Chinese outside of China who have integrated for generations in their host countries and have become citizens by birth, still significantly prefer to marry and have children with other Chinese to preserve our Chinese heritage. The pride of Chinese people and other East Asian countries like Korea and Japan is why we East Asians are homogenous countries, because we value our history, traditions and culture and want them to remain as pure as possible. We love to spread our culture and language to foreigners who come here because we are proud of what we have built over millennia.

      LittleHampie89 中国本来不等于中华人民共和国,但作为一个地理政治概念现在基本等同了。华夏是民族文化概念。所以移民海外的就不是中国人了,但永远是华人。

    • @TheXanian
      @TheXanian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      China is not really a homogeneous country to be honest, unlike korea and japan. China has many minorities and many languages and dialects. Diversity is what makes China more interesting than korea and japan.

    • @finnt.3888
      @finnt.3888 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheXanian: Even Japan is not 100% Japanese. I think it's around 98%. In the 1960s, Han accounted for more than 94% of the population of the People's Republic of China. Then the government cheated by imposing the one-child policy on Han and as a result, it's dropped to 90% now. If there had been no anti-Han policies in the PRC, the Han would have still made up around 95% of the population, as is the case in the Republic of China (Taiwan). So I think it's not fair to say that Japan and Korea are homogeneous and China is not, because there is no material difference between 95% and 98%.

    • @TheXanian
      @TheXanian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all, China has way more ethnic minorities than korea and japan. This certainly makes China more diverse and more interesting to look at. And secondly, you should also realize that the so-called ethnic Han Chinese is not a homogenous ethnicity, neither in terms of culture/language and nor in terms of physical traits or even genetics. There are studies which show that Han Chinese from one region may be closer to the ethnic minorities of that region rather than to the Han Chinese from another part of China. In my opinion, the so-called Han Chinese is more like a geopolitical grouping of people rather than an actual ethnic group.

    • @finnt.3888
      @finnt.3888 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheXanian: First, many so-called "minorities" did not even exist before the communist party took power. The KMT government never recognized 56 ethnic groups, nor did Ming, Song... I agree that China has more minorities than Japan and Korea, but still, they account for approximately 5% of the population, which does not make a big difference from Japan and Korea.
      Second, I understand that traditions and dialects among the Han in different provinces (sometimes even in the same province) can be different. But it doesn't take away the fact that the Han is an actual ethnic group. For example, subway is called "di tie" in China mainland and "jie yun" in Taiwan. But this does not mean that the Han in China mainland is a different ethnic group than the Han in Taiwan. The Han is one ethnic group expanded all over China, not different ethnic groups grouped together. Over thousands of years, things just evolved differently. That's why Han in different parts of China and the world have different traditions, dialects.

    I'm Shenzhen-ese currently living in Tokyo. You should learn some Cantonese too. Although mandarin is considered the dominant language in SZ, if you want to learn the old Shenzhen it's Cantonese culture, the good way to start it is to learn Cantonese. We Shenzhen locals love to hear cantonese more than mandarin. I like the Shenzhen now because people from different provinces or countries created a more diverse culture. But I think it's also important to know the history of a place if you want to explore the uniqueness of SZ 's local culture.

We are going to get an AirBNB and are going to both Phase 1 and 2 (me and my son) We are from Oregon and are going to youtube the whole experience. Going to be there from the 13th to the 30th. Would love to chat if possible about just some general stuff if you have time, otherwise, have enjoyed your videos, will be watching more! And coming back often if we have a good time. Great videos!

    when a foreigner friend ask me, are Chinese ppl racist, and i am actually had hard time to answer that question . also, every time when i make jokes they shocked , they told me that in their bias Chinese ppl do not make jokes. i would say, it is mostly because of the language barrier. although you can learn other languages, but language is not just a tool for communications. the way the language exist and the reason one word written like that are all affected by it culture. i would say, there are exist few Chinese who are racist. but for the majority, you have to understand Chinese language deeply (understand connotation of words) to understand why Chinese ppl ,talk , behave differently. so in China, we do not classify ppl by it skin color. but we do, somehow , a little bit, judge ppl by can you speak mandarin or not. if you can,then whatever your skin color is, you are Chinese to us

    @Poppy: Go Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Harbin, Tibet (I think you need a local guide to show you in Tibet if you are a foreigner in Tibet) etc where the ethnic peoples and cultures there are different from core China, which is mainly Han. Tell us more about these regions if you can, based on your personal experiences.

    It's very hard to make friends who are from a different cultural background. Even a country with such diversity like America, white people hang out with white people, black people hang out with black people, Asian people hang out with Asian people.

    The thing is that, I've never met no one who wants to make friends with me. I mean people not from china, lets call them foreigners lol, though I do speak English and no matter how much I helped, they just didn't give no damn. Its not even a question that is it hard to make a Chinese friend, you could always find or meet someone who likes to help. last time i was in checking in in a hotel in Beijing (kinda twist lol). I saw a girl from Spain got into trouble with the checking in, and the cashier of the front door just did their best to help her, and they said: you are not in your own country that's why we r sacrificing our own profit in order to help you. It was so lovely of those guys. all the things that im trying to say is that, WHY ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT MAKING CHINESE FRIENDS??? As long as you could meet one, he/she would love to make friends with you(well, theres always some exception though, not all the chinese are friendly, so still need to be carefully of strangers, god knows what kind of crazy things they would do)
