I had not done much with "High Pressure" EFI pumps before but they Pump Hard! and need to be dampened to the frame with rubber! ....90% of the pump noise is gone! just doing that.
these are great tips! i was wondering why my new cummins lift pump i mounted on the frame was louder than the engine!!!! i didnt use isolators!!! The pump later failed, not sure if it’s cuz the vibration destroyed it??? or it was just a defective pump. but either way I’m mounting a new and better pump and using isolators this time!! this is a good video! nice Nova btw!
Mounting is everything. Rigid mount on a large flat panel like a Trunk floor and it's amplified. Way back in the stone age I used to mount the l would Holly pumps on a bit of radiator hose. When they are set with bolts either side it removes a lot of vibration.
I have 2 pumps the red a1000 brushed and the black a1000 brushless I used foam mounting to the frame and it helps sooooooooooo much. Without the foam with hard rubber it was so darn loud and I drive a 1999 7.3 powerstroke you could hear it over the motor till I added the foam mounting and you can't hear it at all
Thanks for your very informative video. I am running a race honda motor which came with a loud external Weldon fuel pump and race fuel tank. Im looking to replace my loud weldon fuel pump with something quieter. What would you recommend. I mainly do street racing, nothing professional. I greatly appreciate any recommendations. Thank you in advance.
Just an idea for future Sound tests, tape/glue/fix a ruler to the side of the decibelmeter so, where possible, it's placed at the same distance from the source of the noise.
Great info. I have a tech video, I would like to see the most reliable way to have multiple pumps turn on. Also what psi to have them come on. Keep up the great work
It’s the type of noise that causes issue, not the noise level. The duramax was more closely to white noise vs the irritating high pitched noise the fuel pump emitted. In tank is best if at all possible.
I run the aeromotive A1000 stealth pump mounted in my Rick’s stainless tank but I’m out of pump. About to make the jump to that brushless 5gpm direct replacement into the tank. I’m going to buy a sound meter and test mine the way it is now from rear of car and inside with the current pump and again with the 5gpm and see what the numbers look like. I can’t hear it at all with the motor running but I only have a straight 4” 4 foot downpipe from the S480 dumped under my passenger seat so it’s not quiet either. Even when just cycling the key the pump isn’t that loud tho. I think in tank is perfect and helps the bigger tanks live on long drives to help cool it. I don’t see it heating up the fuel enough to matter as someone was worried about that. Maybe I will stick a temp gauge in my tank to get the fuel temps just sitting and then keep tracking after some good driving and playing hard to see if it changes much. I have a return style so I know it will heat some just from being compressed and cycled through the engine bay. Will see tho. Especially if anyone else tests their in-line setup the same way. I love finding the real facts and not just guesses.
Hi Doug! I think most of my noise is from my hard line vibrating against the frame rails. Is there a rubber style holder/clamp I should use for this? Oh, I found Motions rubber frame clamps for 3/8 on your link. Thanks so much. Appreciate it. Cheers from Motown/Dearborn.
Is your water pump actually electric or is it just a regular pump driven by an electric motor? Thanks for the tip, my electric fuel pump isnt isolated so its annoyingly noisy. Its not a thing when I am driving since the motor is way louder.
@@AB-80X are they like the best? I have one on my Camaro it’s been pretty good too me especially since the main problem w the car is the water pump leaking on to the opti and now I have the msd set up and the electric water pump so it’s been amazing
I replace my 1998 Chevy cavalier fuel pump one year ago with the fuel filter today I went to reinstall the battery that I left out of the for a week because I special ordered one that is expensive is supposed to last longer. I started on my car today and the rear of the car has a humming sound coming from the gas tank. Why would my fuel pump be doing this now?
I've never seen a pump mounted like that. I love these videos! Any chance you'd be able to show a detailed install of a fuel pump relay? Makes me so nervous thinking about it.
Fuel Air Spark we can try to do one in the future. In the meantime we have a relay video we did a few months back that I think will cover and make sense of everything for you!
Pretty much all relays operate the same...your using a device (sensor or switch ) to control a high amp load (pump, fans). The relay itself is a low amp device so you dont burn out the sensor or switch.
I bet a trolling motor install kit would work good also for mounting a fuel pump. They hold the weight of a trolling motor to the front of a Fiberglass bass boat and reduce noise so the motor don’t spook fish off when your using it. You guys should try it out. Maybe make it a kit to sell. All they are are rubber insulated nutserts pretty much that require no special tools to install.
I understand in tank pumps, are cooled by the fuel! However that in turn, heats the fuel up! Doesnt seem like a good trade off to me! If you are worried about air intake temp, you should worry about fuel temps also!
@@anthonymason701 I get it! Just trying to think of something that maximizes everything with the smallest trade offs! Maybe a fuel cooler or a cool can, like Moroso makes!
No matter whether it's a dead headed system or return system, a car that is not an all out race car, needs a fuel pump controller. This will greatly reduce the heat as the pump is slowed way down most of the time. If people think hot air kills power, just wait till they see what hot fuel does. It's a massive loss. Fuel coolers for the win!
I like the video idea, but you need to measure sound from the same distance away to make a comparison. Panels/equipment shielding the noise will also reduce it.
Just a side note I think you need to do this as a before and after type of test. Kind of pointless to compare the 'fixed' quiet pump to everything else in the shop when you should get a car that has a body/frame mounted pump with hard lines to test first. Then replace the lines, test. Then mount/isolate the pump, test and maybe even get several pumps to test sound levels. Just saying if you going to do comparison test you just cant go 'Heres my finished product see how quiet it is!' Surely you've got someone at the shop who got a thrown together system for you to improve upon. Hell come get my car LoL!
Tech tip tue...how about sealing up the hot side on your turbo system. See headers/manifolds glued to heads, why not gaskets? Are v-bands good enough? Could they use a little sealant or are these new copper ringed v-bands better.
I have a new fuel pump from pierburg. Iam driving an Audi TT 1.8 turbo. I already changed the new pump again for another new pump. Still the same result. Nobody can help me
mine sound like a hammer drill in the boot (Trunk) it might be my check valves making the noise. i have twin AEM 400 staged. it is mounted in the fuel cell in the boot (trunk).

Do a tech tip Tuesday on maintenance of E85 fuel system
Return style vs dead headed makes a huge difference too
No matter what, it's also a good idea to run a pump speed regulator. Saves your pump and puts way less heat into the fuel-
do you find dead heat runs hotter/louder? always seems like a return is easier on the pump.

My friends BBC 70 GMC C-10 had a BG400 pump on it and you could hear it for a city block away.
What do you suggest for quieting a high pressure fuel pump that sits on top of the engine?
It’s the type of noise that causes issue, not the noise level. The duramax was more closely to white noise vs the irritating high pitched noise the fuel pump emitted. In tank is best if at all possible.
Great vid! So glad you did this. Fuel pumps can be annoying. In tank pump for me.

Buy a pump regulator. Your pump will last a lot longer, run a lot cooler and noise will be a non-issue.

take the fuel pump off the rubber and then compair
That would’ve been a valuable video if they measure the decibel level without the rubber standoff and then with the rubber standoff.
That’s what I was hoping to see

Put a couple shock absorber rubber bumpers between the P clamp and the body of my ride. Quieted the pump id say more than 50%. Thanks!
Can you specify the fuel pump model and manufacture used on the Nova?
Loudness is 1 factor frequency range of the noise is the other factor like nails on a chalkboard.

It’s actually not if mounted correctly. You must not have watched the video
