  • You’d probably spend 300-K to revive this rusty 1964 Chrysler 300K but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have cool details to be examined! One of only 3,674 built, learn why this “letter car” is special like Special K.

No VIN, can't win, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 8 for Chrysler, 4 for 300K, 4 for 1964 model year, 3 for Jefferson Ave, Detroit, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The original Jefferson Avenue plant that assembled this car operated from 1925 to 1990 and then a new plant adjacent to it was opened in 1991 and still operates under Stellantis today.
No tag, can't brag, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 842 for 300K two door hardtop, M1B for Blue interior trim, possible code "D" Nassau Blue exterior paint, among other codes.
Not a Veloce fan, as they did the book "The History of the Firebird" in 2003 and both of my Trans Ams are featured in it, but they made a ton of mistakes on the technical details. I offered to edit and write parts of it, but they said, "We have experts". Consequently, the book is riddled with errors. Although not considered a "Letter Car" by many, Chrysler did offer the 300 performance model (as a Hurst) in 1970 and those are sought after today.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all.

Hello Google User GP, I feel your pain regarding "putting your fate / Firebird in other peoples' hands". I wrote 5 books for CarTech Books and happily can say nobody fiddled with them. But as a freelance magazine writer AFTER my time on-staff at HOT ROD (August 19, 1997 through January 20, 2004) a few "editors" frigged with my submissions and left ME holding the bag with readers who criticized the "edits" added by these guys. Overall, it was all-good. But on occasion, I used to get into squabbles with Editors and pled with them: "let me know what you want changed - usually just reducing length or eliminating photos with captions - and let ME DO IT". But nope. That added a step and these guys were busy. I quickly learned NOT to make any reference in the body copy of the story to any photo or photo caption. IFFFF the photo and caption was eliminated, then there would be a bad "disconnect" baked into the story. Most Editors were too busy to connect these disconnected dots and again, the guy with the by-line got the crap from readers. Oh well. Life goes on. Thanks for commenting. -Steve Magnante

@@SteveMagnante Know it well. We used Corel Ventura back then to publish catalogs, but Microsoft FoxPro to maintain the database files that held the applications. An in-house program would "crunch" the data and turn out a PDF file that could be exported to Corel to publish. After the plates went to the printer, you'd have "blues" which were pre-prints. Sometimes, we'd have to correct those last minute. Literal cut and paste. We'd have to manually check the proofs to make sure that the section and part references were correct. There were footnote charts, reference charts, tables of contents, you name it. Sometimes the book was close to 1000 pages and then we had it online for a time too. There were VIN code and engine charts to update (yup, guess who got that job because they said to me that "you know them all"). Some of those charts hadn't been updated since the 1980s (I started there in 1994). One of the harder publications to do was the carburetion guide and carburetor stamping number to unit parts guide. That is, a tag number would translate into a carburetor kit, a choke pull-off(s), choke thermostat and float and other parts. Talk about a rabbit hole. I'd look and say, "Hmmm, no carburetor float for any 225 Slant Six, that's odd..." Sure enough, we had the part in the line, but we had a "hole" in our coverage. Multiply that by maybe 10,000 records in the data base and it becomes one big rabbit hole. The Slant Six was an actual true case. Not a single carburetor float listed from like the early 1960s to 1976, yet we had the part in the line. Many times, I'd have to break out the original OEM parts book from whatever year, go to the carburetor breakdown chart, look up the OEM number and cross it over in our system to find that we actually did have the part in the line. Yes, the original OEM parts books. We had them going back to at least 1960, in some cases all the way back to the 1940s.
I don't miss that end of the business because management wasn't savvy to know that you "can't sell what you don't catalog". Customers could send in free postcards with catalog comments (the OEMs did that too) and oftentimes, the counter people would find holes in the coverage but still make the sale. We then had to fix the database so that the next time we published the book, it would have the correct information. Many of the cards were for in fact older applications.

Hello Markybug1973, Thanks for watching and writing...from Scotland! Way back in 1985 I spent a semester at The University of Stirling in Scotland and had a great time. I used to "live" at the local "Wimpy's" hamburger place! When I was there, the feature film "Back To The Future" was playing at the Stirling Cinema. I went twice! As for classic junkyard stories, we must remember the astonishing salvage operation at Scapa Flow when the Imperial German Navy of WWI was interred for almost a year and - instead of forfeiting them as war reparations - the German skeleton crews SCUTTLED them into the waters. Soon after, a London scrap merchant named Ernest Cox bid on salvage rights and actually RAISED 80-percent of the sunken vessels. This included 500 foot long battle cruisers and dozens of other war ships. The ultimate Junkyard Crawl! Anyhoo, Thanks again for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

I could never understand why Chrysler dropped the letter cars. Especially when the 426 Street Hemi was offered in B bodies for 1966. A Hemi powered C body should have been made available thru 71. What a road king that might have been. Great video! Merry Christmas!!!

    • @SteveMagnante
      @SteveMagnante  ปีที่แล้ว +20

Hello Kevin Cruz, Thanks for watching and writing. If you Google "1966 Chrysler 300-M Hemi concept car history" you'll see that as early as October of 1963 Chrysler was planning a possible 300-M model with a standard 426 cube wedge and a 440-cube version of the Hemi as a halo model. It seems like a myth, but Chrysler actually filed vehicle specifications papers with the F.I.A. (a European organization that served as a gate keeper to legalize new cars as being mass-produced and thus legal for international sanctioned competition) for a Hemi powered 300 that would have arrived in 1966. It is possible that some running "mules" were built and studio photographs absolutely depict some full size clay (possibly metal) styling proposals. Motor Trend magazine even predicted the car in their "New for '66" issue. But we both know that Motor Trend never makes mistakes...except for the never-was '66 300-M and CANCELLING ROADKILL'S JUNKYARD GOLD! Thanks again for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

    • @michaelmason6210

Tom virtually all vehicles are restorable. How much you willing to pay?
I am currently restoring 2 56 Fords that will have around 70% new sheetmetal when done. I bought the 60 el camino from Iowa Classic Cars (if you happen to watch him) it will have around 60% new sheetmetal when done.
I wanted a very hard car for each of my kids to learn how to weld and do full on restorations of vehicles. If I went the way of a basket case 300 k car (for example) I would have spent all the money just on the car as opposed to 3 cars fully restored at around 20,000 U.S $. Plus I save a couple of old cars.

Sampson designed at Ford as well as at Lockheed and Douglas. Sampson had his hand in designing the first Thunderbirds. The dash does have a cockpit instrument theme where it contours on the ends. I would like to know more about him.

Yes, like you said, Chrysler started to decontent in 1962. At one time, they had full leather interior. I believe that at one time, 300 letter series cars included door panels made of leather as well. Front and rear buckets, seats, etc. The prices were reduced after 1962, coming closer to the price of the non letter series 300 Chryslers. Non letter 300's came standard with a 383 V-8 with 305 horse power. This particular 300 K is pretty bare bones. You could get power windows, tilt wheel, A/C, and AM/FM radio, which this particular 300 does not have. It is still a beautiful car in the blue with a blue interior. Too bad she is rotting away in the wrecking yard. The inside is still presentable. Unfortunately, lots of rust on the quarters and the floor pans are probably a mess.

I can remember as a kid in the 70"s my neighborhood still had the older people who all drove the big cars from 60"s I can remember a 300 this same model. Another Steve profiled te Buick wildcat. Also had a 61 Cadillac. A 69 Newport that was bought before he retired from Chrysler and moved from Detroit to California. His wife kept the car until her death in 1991. This car looked just like it did in 1969. Also we had one fury also a 61 dodge lancer. Would have liked to have any of these today. Thank you Steve for your videos. Have a great day.

The 64 letter series 300ks had the automatic on a floor shifter. The Newport 300 and New Yorkers all had the automatic push button transmission on the left.

I have been thinking about this. In my experience the buttons make it easier to win the race because you can't mis-shift, however if the car has a lot of power it will throw you back in the seat so you won't be able to reach the buttons.

    The transmission had two pumps
The one transmission that you can
jump start by pushing the car or down a hill
It was the rear pump that made it work

First car I ever messed with was a 300 sport, 373 rear gears, torque flight, 413 single 4 barrel. Coolest gauge cluster ever in a car "astro dome". I was 14, and it was the first thing I ever tried to get running.....it would run off what I poured in the carb and that was it. But we gave 250$ for it, I cleaned all the rat crap out of it, cleaned it up and sold it for 1000$, to buy my first driver(84 caprice classic). Still wish I would've kept it tho.

I used to read and collect car magazines (and build model cars) as a kid. I believe it was "Supercars Annual '69" that tested a 1969 Chrysler 300, which they optioned out to make it what they called a "300P" as if the letter car sequence had continued through the '60s. This is trivia that will never be useful on trivia night at a bar, or on Jeopardy!, so I offer it here while it's still stored in my aging brain.

Hello Kara Richards, if I remember correctly, the "Supercars Annual '69" crew were the same ones that published Hot Street Cars (Phil Engeldrum's company) and were notorious wise acres. I'm betting the use of the letter "P" was not a compliment. Was Seymour Balz the author of that story? And yes, Seymour Balz really did have a column in Hot Street Cars magazine. Engeldrum always used the Seymour Balz pen name when slamming a new car or model. Anyhoo, I am amazed that Chrysler revived the C-300 in 2005! Great cars - then and now. Thanks again for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

@Steve Magnante Understand that I haven't seen these magazines in decades, so I don't remember if the individual reviews in that one, and "Supercars Annual '70," had writer's bylines. But my recollection is they liked their "300P." In contrast to my recollection of a review which started out, "Very sorry, but we weren't very impressed by the '69 Olds 442. We know it won some car of the year awards last year..." I remember Seymour Balz and the Lemon Awards. Example: Most Innovative Styling: 1971 Buick Riviera. Followed by Ugliest New Car: 1971 Buick Riviera.

Wow, I guess better than crushed but seeing that car and others (like the New Yorker next to it) left to the elements like that is tough. Lots of spare goodies (trim, glass, etc) to be saved. I'd volunteer to spend a weekend removing and categorizing that stuff for preservation (if the entire car were never going to be sold for restoration).
