In '66 I was driving a 427/425 Corvette. The only thing that bothered me was running into a Cobra. Never saw one. These Galaxies and LTD's with 427 (R) engines, whether in 7 Litre trim or not, should be on this list for fastest cars of 1966. They were big, but not that big, as they all rode upon a 119" wheelbase which is only 3" longer that the GTO.
Back in 1970, my high school buddy bought a 1966 442. We used to drive around Orange County (CA) looking for anyone interested in a street race. We thought we were the fastest car on the road. Then one day a 69 Mach 1 Cobra 428 pulled up beside us at the light. Our hearts started thumping. We knew we were in trouble. Our only hope was that the Mustang driver missed a shift or something. Well, the Mustang won but not by as much as we expected. In order to keep up, my buddy kept it in 3rd gear for too long and over-revved the engine. The engine was severely damaged. Push rods were bent due to a floating valve train and rod bearings were spun. The engine made a lot of horrible knocking sounds after we shut down. Until that race, we were undefeated.

Gotta learn to lash those valves ! And keep a set of valve cover gaskets handy
@@bgjb-r1499 So was the 365/375 hp 327. I've not found anything chevy could build for a daily road runner eater with 0 to little maint for a street car. Wake you right up and sound mean yet tickle it lightly (hard to do) and it was just another chevy going to school or work. Screw on exhaust dumps got too much attention several inspections by the locals but no tickets.
I bought a 1968 new Nova 327/325 4 speed Muncie close ratio and Posi Trac 390 ratio (not sure on ratio) that was a lot of fun to drive. It wasn’t a year old when a girl ran a red light and spun me around like a top totaling it. I read the times our cars were doing which seems slow now..
The greatest era for performance cars with personality
flash back to my youth for sure....
Loved the trip back in time 👍❤
👏✌️👍💪💪💪
Great channel! I subbed.
Amazingly so.
Hard to believe now the slowest Tesla Model 3 will beat every one of these at the dragstrip except the Ford Fairlane R code.
The insurance companies, more than anything else, ruined the muscle car era. The premium could run as much as 5 times the normal rate for a 4-spd muscle car. Of course, the muscle car owner was a big factor in those rates with speeding tickets and wrecks.
My first car, 1966 Ford Galaxie, 390 cuin, 4 Bbl, 2 door. Dual exhausts, SPDO was 120 mph, gas was 15-16 mpg.🎉
Thanks, mine was 4 SPEEDXL, Would have like the 390/428 maybe: greatbDriver , see my nite#.
I had the same car w/factory 4 speed. I rarely broke 14mpg.
Too bad thos times are wrong. Plus, where is the L79 Chevy IIs at on the list?🤔🙄
Too many owners have been embarrassed by those 327 Chevy IIs to mention it.
@@OscarHedden-eh4xk IKR? Big block killers. They got out on everybody and very few caught back up to them.
I was expecting the L79 Chevy II “big block killer” to be in the top half of the list also. I think they assumed big blocks topped the list and skipped the Mighty Mouse.
9:09 that’s me!
Nice car!!!
Thanks a lot. Nice car
@@pd07 thank you ! Been in the family along time.
427 AC Cobra blew them all away
Super performance notwithstanding, the best looks of the muscle cars was the GTO. Not even close
I'll have-ta agree, but I'm a bit biased. :) (Like the tires)
Opinions Vary!
@@Musclecar1972 Yes they do. That's what makes it "fun". :)
FORD, "Fix or repair daily"
"First on race day"

The chevy truck, sinking on the commercial. "Like a rock".

@@joequillun7790 And I agree with that as well, SloPar, was one, Gutless, Found on the Road Dead, Garage Mechanics Companion, Mustink, (BMW) Bowel Movement on Wheels, and given enough time, I’m sure I could remember a few more. LOL 👍
@@Musclecar1972 LOL. I like the Beamer one. And just saw the GMC. Funny stuff. Nice. :D
Had a '66 Corvette: 327/360. If I kept it, I could sell it, pay off my house and have change left over. 1966: How many horsepower? 2024: What kind of gas mileage does it get? My how times have changed!
1st car when I came home from Nam was a 1966 T-Bird 406 c.i. W/ 2 Holley 4 bbl’s. Love seats in the back. Back in the day
There was no Ford 406ci engines available in 1966 - they were discontinued after 1963.
@@eskieman3948 ; It probably started life as 390, so he swapped it out.
They are both FE blocks.
The 66 chevelle is my favorite and my birth year !
My birth year also but I really like those GTOs.
I had a '66 Chevy 2 Nova 283 2 door. It was fast enough and stylish.
You missed the Mercury S-55 with the 345hp, 428ci engine.
jay leno`s fairlane with mufflers delete option,LOL
Jay Leno is a weirdo
That was a 7 liter Galaxie (428).
I'm not sure how it compared, but the 66 corvette that came with a high performance 327 with 350 horse power was light enough that it might keep up for a bit
In high school in 1971 during the Christmas holiday holidays, one of my friends parents gave him a 1967 Corvette 427 for speed. Glen Campbell’s nephew went to my high school. I don’t know how he got it but during that time he got a 1966 Dodge charger 426 hemi automatic, beautiful cars. Both of these cars were beautiful. Ricky, the driver and the owner of the Corvette and I lined up next to Glen Campbell’s nephew and his charger. The Dodge charger beat us when we took off dragon down a main street in Pasadena, Texas. I believe the automatic gave him the advantage for sure over the four speed.
The 1966 Ford Mustang whether it be the Fastback, Notchback or the Shelby was the only year the Mustang wouldn't fishtail off the line. While all other brands and models did.
1966 Chevy II SS ? 27, 350 hp? Quick car. It should be here I believe. A cousin of mine owned one.
I bought a 1966 SS Chevelle years ago. It was missing the motor and transmission. I dropped in a 427 and rock crusher transmission out of a 1969. I'm working on a 1967 Chevelle SS396 now. It will be all original numbers matching.
Hey Bro, where are you from?
So many of the cars tested by the magazines were doctored by the dealers and manufacturers it’s difficult to actually know how fast they were
I have a 67 fairlane with a close ratio 4 speed and a 69 428 scj with 4:11 4 spider equl lock diferenchel and you have to hold on to the steering wheel or get thrown in the back seat
Ya know I really love muscle cars but what's with the British accent guy telling us about American muscle cars.
A-i
A low end electric car, while ugly to look at, can beat any one of these on the track.
Who cares? I surely do not. No experience necessary to drive an electric sled. 1966 high hp cars left little to your imagination and quite a learning curve to make it perform at its peak. Electric cars get in turn it on mash the shit outa the go pedal and race over.

That 390 was not that quick...especially off the showroom floor...cmon A.I......do ya googles
What happened to the 427 Corvette? Technically a sports car, but seems they are always lumped in with the muscle cars...
A 1966 427 Shelby Cobra SC was faster than all of them and the Dragon Snake was even quicker in the 1/4 mile. A Cobra SC could run the quarter in 12.1 sec with its narrow bias ply stock tires with drag slicks it was much faster as getting a Cobra SC off the line was a matter of limiting wheel spin.
Where is # 2?
I had a rare 66 Buick gs 401 ci 340 hp 0nly made with q jet carb had 425 cam turbo 400. Switch pitch torque converter 364 gears later on i put crower 310 cam dual 4 s on it m t super scavenger headers it was very fast silver black vinyl top ran l 60 x 15 on rear 10:40
There were lots of 66 chevelles...and they ran a whole lot faster than that...a 396

Not without headers and slicks they didn’t.

I also had a 66 nova with the l-79 , and muncie 4 sp..put a good set of track bars on it , and 15 inch mags and wide tires..wasn't many cars could outrun it in the quarter mile
I also had a L79 nova . None of the other cars mentioned came looking for me

With the to 427 Fairlane of very very specialty car you couldn't go to a Ford dealer and order it there's only one dealer I think was equipped the 4/27
Why include the mustang. It’s a pony car not a muscle car. May as well include the 1966 427 Corvette.

The 400 was an awesome engine to bad GM modified it to blow up . The GTO the rich man muscle car!In forest green! 427 the best engine ever made !the 301 the 302 the 350 all were great engines but than GM changed them To not last for over 80,000!They took the best they ever made and made them bad!everything that was heavy duty they cut it down on purpose leaving ford and gm with nothing left but trash.and they expect us to just keep buying them!not this kid!
