I hand load for hunting bolt action rifles up here in Alaska.
I start with 200 cases of virgin brass, fire-form to one rifle and use for that one rifle.
I start with quality brass: Lapua, Peterson, Norma, Nozler
Lots of time for case prep during long winter nights:
    1) Clean brass to keep grime/grit out of match grade dies
    2) Full length resize cases with a shoulder bump of 0.002 and no expander ball in sizing die
    3) Trim cases to consistent length
    4) Deburr/Chamfer case mouths for better bullet seating
    5) Use expander mandrel to size necks to consistent internal dimension
    6) Turn necks to consistent neck thickness (skim turn with quality brass)
    7) Uniform primer pockets to a consistent depth
    8) Deburr/chamfer flash holes inside case
    9) Anneal case necks for consistent tension and longer case life
    10) Run expander mandrel one last time through necks for consistent tension
    11) Wash cases to remove lube and any brass flakes from case prep
    12) Prime cases with a hand primer

Cut my teeth hand loading when I got my 10 mm 1911 I wanted to shoot full power loads and only the expensive bullets that Buffalo bore and Lehigh defense were coming that way from the factory. Then I did 357 Magnum then 9 mm then 308 and slowly but surely I got my 270 with an acronym proof chambering and have yet to buy one single factory round of 270. Since turning it into a custom chambered beast I've been trying to work consistently with neck tensions and my hand loads to try to make the most consistent and accurate ammo I can.

Do you check and correct the case body to bullet tip runout to minimize flyers? I had flyers [1 of 6] until I did this; now I have almost no flyers.

If you dont think its good enough at 100yrd then try that load at 200. My 338 rum w 27 inch shilen #6 contour shooting .8 at 100 and .3 to .5 inch at 200. The 300 grain Berger's aren't stabilizing with my load till a little farther out. My 1000 yard to 1500 yard accuracy is amazing. So don't shitcan your info too soon

Very true. For long range shooting (not competition bullseye shooting where fractions of an inch is the difference between the winner and losers) you really want to get a barrel with as fast of a spin as you can without compromising the integrity of the bullet. It opens groups slightly up at close range, but the bullet won't spread at as high of a rate at longer ranges due to a faster (and consequentially less variation) in spin. For practical applications, this is perfect for most shooters.
I think it all started when people thought the terminal performance of the M16 was due to the 1:12 twist not "over stabilizing" the bullet allowing it to yaw, when in reality yawing has minimal effect outside of long subsonic 30 calibers. People just started assuming terminal performance equated to other kinds of performance like precision. The M16 was a good stopper only because the extra barrel length gave the bullet enough velocity to fragment reliably past 150 yards (~220 yards), and more aggressively closer in, unlike the shorter M4 variants. Fast twist helps promote fragmentation. Unfortunately people still believe overstabilization is something to be avoided, when it really isn't, outside of benchrest.

@@DaveSmith-cp5kj there is a fine line of increasing spin rate to over spinning. When increasing your spin the bullet is more stable while passing though the transonic window but spun to fast then the gyroscopic stability overrides aerodynamic stability causing the bullet to not nose down after passing max ord and loosing BC. You end up shooting great 100 and 200 yards awesome but 1000 yard group goes to shit and bullet strikes keyhole tearing through the paper at the angle of departure from barrel. Proven by brian litz

Bryan. I have a Savage 110 DLH made in the middle 1960s - early 1970s. Its a fast taper barrel and after 3 - 4 rounds, groupings out to 300 yards degradates very quickly. I would like to find a heavy barrel in the $300 - $400 rage to replace it with. Every thing else would remain stock, keep the trigger and bolt action, and stock. These components work well, was just hoping I could take it out to 1000 yards with a barrel and muzzle brake change. Know of any manufactures that have a heavy barrel for this early Savage Rifle?
I am using the Berger 230gr 308 Tactical bullet, Winchester casing, and Remington primer.
