@@keithvincent8760 To give him some credit, for most bands the lead guitar is the main instrumentalist - he was probably unaware that with BANDMAID they're ALL the lead instrumentalists! 😎👍🥰
This was early in the festival schedule so it was mid-day and hot. The crowds tend to be light at the start of the day and Lollapalooza tends to draw a pop and hip-hop audience these days. But the audience grew during their set. They had a good crowd under those conditions. They got some good reviews in the local press. The 1st Japanese band to appear in 13 years at Lollapalooza. The previous one was the mighty X-Japan. Band-Maid also performed the night before in one of the Lollapalooza Aftershows. They haven't toured Europe since before COVID but I expect they will be back.
I think the reason we love Hate so much is because the Maids have so much fun playing it. They get to go wild. Especially Saiki, since she wrote the lyrics. Thx, Gramps!🤘😂
What an epic bassguitar 'battle'! This around mid-day at the festival - basically the opener for the day and the crowd grew like crazy durung their set in way that is very unusual! How could you not be intrigued by this level of musicanship?!!!
This was the first performance I ever heard from band-maid (TH-cam) last August. Best rock band ever and I'm 66 and seen most. BTW if you look when you paused it Akane was switching a bum stick.
“Almost like a real guitar”😂😂. That made my day. A friend of mine plays a 5 string bass (not on Misa’s level but he’s pretty good) and I can’t wait to use that line the next time I see him play.
Band Maid was billed to perform around 1:45p on Friday (Day 2 of 5), after performing 15 hours earlier at the Lolla "Aftershow." So, people were still entering the venue resulting in a small crowd when the show began. By the end of the 1 hour set, there were a few more folks stopping by, unknowingly realizing that they were seeing a historic event, of Band Maid conquering the World, Po! Great reaction, Sir! 🦍🍌
Great reaction and when they hit the stage the temperature was between 95-100F. The girls later said this was the hottest show they've ever played. Also, the lyrics to HATE? were written by the main singer, Saiki, about her friend's husband caught cheating on her, which caused a huge scandal in Japan. This was around 1-2PM so the crowd was pretty small, but by the end of their 1 hour show it was pretty large.
I gather that they were added to the festival late and so could only have an early slot. It's pretty obvious that many fans got there early to see them, witch is great, mixed with some that did not know of them at all.
It had been 10+ years since a Japanese band had played Lollapalooza since Japan X. Interesting thing is that Band-Maid did not apply to be there. Lollapalooza actually invited them, which is unusual.
You won me over with the triple Belgian ale. I have had many but have yet to try that one. If you can find an Austrian malt liquor 'Samichlaus' please try it. It has 14% alcohol content.
Aside from the guys at the front, I would bet most of the audience didn’t know of them before the event. According to multiple journos covering the event, the crowd was being gathering while they played as much as anyone the more they played through the set. Safe to say they earned some fans at the show. For some bands the biggest hurdle to success is the wrong singer or not finding the right sound or not writing that one song. For band-maid, their biggest hurdle is just getting one listen because as soon as they get that listen, they gain a fan.
"Hate" is about one of Saiki's friends' husband that cheated on her during COVID - I think she got across what she thinks of him quite well... They have many great reviews from this, and Rolling Stone magazine had this to say "Japanese Rockers Band-Maid Put Guitar Center Showoffs to Shame There’s a pun to be made about how much Band-Maid ripped, but the Japanese group goes even harder than that. Fluctuating between hard rock, aughts nu-metal, and pop rock, each member of the quintet is a virtuoso in her own right with more than a decade of practice in Band-Maid alone. They lured curious onlookers into the fold when highlights like “Domination” and “Don’t You Tell Me” got huge reactions from the crowd, but it was the bass solo-versus-guitar solo duels mid-song that got the biggest cheers. This is what those guys in Guitar Center think their ridiculous riffing sounds like. Turns out it’s done best, and most effortlessly, by women in black-and-white maid dresses and frilly hair-pieces as they smile ear to ear. -N.C." Next we're going to have to get you into K-Pop - well over 90% of metal/rock people also seem to love many of those artists, too - you're half-way there with Rolling Quartz... 😉😎👍 There's a lot to choose from, but perhaps, because of similar titles. Blackpink's "Pink Venom", Stray Kids' "Venom" - or [G]-Idle's "Oh My God"
From an interview: Q: The title has a question mark, so I expected you had some feeling that might be hatred and would end up saying “I hate you but I love you”… Saiki: Not at all. Because I say “It’s meaningless” at the end (laughs). However, these lyrics were purely inspired by the music. When I listened to it for the first time, I had the impression that Kanami was pissed off by something. Like, she was irritated (laughs). Kanami: That’s not true, though… However, I had an image of explosion about it.
If you want to see Band-Maid give a blazing live performance of HATE watch this that they have just released on their channel today (06/03/2024) Its guaranteed to induce goosebumps. Its from their 10th anniversary performance at Yokohama. There is an epic Kanami - Misa guitar and bass conversation - th-cam.com/video/yfORoQIqB3E/w-d-xo.html. The quality is so good compared toLollapalooza
Much of the crowd did NOT know who they were. The lineup that day was not exactly rock or metal friendly. All hip hop and DJ's. That said, the crowd grew as they played - for very obvious reasons. It was also early in the day, and much of the Lolla crowds don't arrive until mid to late afternoon. Their loss.
BAND-MAID give it their all & leave nothing behind on stage to give the crowd the most awesome experience possible....& they do this every show.😌
Only thing that was Behind, was the camera man.
@@keithvincent8760 Lol. They gave him one simple job to do, film them playing, & he decided to film Miku (Not playing) instead during the bass solo.😂

Their whole 1 hour set from Lollopalooza is available on TH-cam too!
Still? It's been taken down several times. The original had the interview before the set.
I see someone put it back up. Audio is only so so however.
I think it's even more amazing when you listen to it with "Dice & Hate?", which is a continuation of the previous song "Dice".
I think the reason we love Hate so much is because the Maids have so much fun playing it. They get to go wild. Especially Saiki, since she wrote the lyrics. Thx, Gramps!🤘😂
Band-Maid and Belgium beer! That's a hard combo to beat!
But goes together so well.
Agreed!

Looking at the line up, this seems to be one of the heavier bands - probably explains the crowd.

A lot of people at Lollapalooza don't show up for the early bands, and of the ones that did a lot of them didn't know BAND-MAID.
🤗
