Jingles, you made me think of a game I had in the Kawachi a few weeks back. It was a tier 3 game, nearby a channel on one of the maps (don't remember which one) and had just dealt with another battleship when a Tenryuu shows up with over half health. I struggle to turn the ship around to get the guns to bear and look away for a moment to check whether other enemies were shooting at me, turn back and see no Tenryuu. It was then that I noticed I actually knocked him out with 1 shot from my secondaries. The funniest thing about this was that there was no friendlies in the area when this happened. I wish I had recorded this to confirm it.
Jingles, for all your hating on the South Carolina I will just say, having played through both lines in both open and closed Beta I think the Kawachi is WAY worse. I don't remember it being this bad in Closed Beta but it is utterly awful now.

I've played BB's, and more specifically American BB's, since they first came out in CBT, and I really don't understand what all the crying is about. I've always managed to do well in them. Not trying to piss anyone off, but to be honest what I think the problem really is, is that a lot of BB drivers fail to use one very important piece of equipment with their ships - that lump of gray matter between their ears. I still run into players that don't understand that the graduated marks you see in target view represent SECONDS OF LEAD TIME - press alt to see the shell flight time in seconds, then lead the target by the matching number of marks for a 20 knot ship - for fast cruisers and DD's, double that - if they're angling away from you, elevate - if they're angling towards you, hold under them. Even with the current state of affairs, I can manage to hit at least 30% of the total shots fired over the course of a game, under all circumstances. Hell, that's five to ten times better than what it was in real life against moving targets at range. BB's were powerful ships, but they weren't impregnable - they weren't meant to take on entire fleets alone.

Mitchell Oates This+ ppl don't know how and when to use their consumables and just burn to death all the time. I really have no issue at all with battleships too, and the buff was made so that secondary guns work better since they use main gun accuracy stats when firing, Gonna be playing bb even more now :)

One thing I try and do in BBs is aim at roughly the waterline and double click to fire a full broadside. I don't know if that's effective but even without citadel pens it still does Metric shit tons of damage. Also WG is making a video to explain where Citadels are and where to shoot them. But Citadels should be where American armor is thickest.
carnivorouse I agree. Similar to arty in wot, one lucky shot can ruin your game. I dont complain, because BS guy at least need to aim well, but after that you cant poke out anywhere, because when enemy see you on low health, they will all shot at you.
Well neither disagree nor could I agree, I like the spike in dmg that I can do right now as it is what excites me and give me goose bumps in special times, however if I ever meet the situation that Jingles spoke about where I rarely deal citadales hits (which I have never experienced that, I've always got good aim and never failed to satisfy my expectations in dmg dealt) then I would have to agree with the smooth dmg curve game mechanics. Personally I prefer right now, just as it is, because this is exactly what I am expecting from a battleship game play.

Common reasons Cruisers don't protect BBs from aircraft. 1. BB has range and they tend to like to sit at max range......cruiser cant do anything at that range, gets bored, leaves you. 2. BB goes off on his own cause "he's a BB". cruiser, not wanting to suicide, goes other way with the team 3. BB goes to a massive fk fest of BBs. cruiser, with its low caliber guns, short range, and easy to pen citadels. decides to find a more easy target to fight that wont involve it getting focus fired as its guns fail to do much dmg vs BBs(except for fires) 4. Cruiser sees planes. cruiser heads to planes. other than these, i'm fine following a BB in my cruiser, BB provides me some protection in a fight. but sadly, its rare that a "BB captain who thinks he's a captial ship" actually works with the team and goes in ranges that a cruiser can lend its fire as well. also keep in mind IJN cruisers aren't AA cruiser. they heavy cruisers mostly. focusing on torps over AA. and the Atlanta has short range. AA alone isn't going to pay the repair bill. i need to hunt down DDs and cruisers. as my 120mm guns are next to useless vs BBs (350+ hits to kill a Warspite.....yeah...that bad)

Arenta Tano I love stalking friendly BBs in my Atlanta. They usually get focus fired as I let the HE rain down on everything in range. I had a game which I believe was 500ish hits across 4 BBs doing 86k HE damage and 30k fire damage.

In my experience on the test the Cit pen medel seems less frequent but you still get near cit pen dmg roles. I love this no, more 830 dmg from my 14 inch guns. I would have to agree with what you said although i still had quite a few cit pens. But the volley to volley dmg was more consistent for the better.

Battleships are the RNG hell, the real Heart of Darkness when it comes to firing. Had a games with six, perfect aimed,medium range salvos, completly missing cruiser, and ones, with three salvos in the row, with over 80% shots hitting in each, on similar distance. Lived thru close engagement with Omaha or Phoenix, who was charging from front, with most of my guns pointed in the other direction, waiting for him to pass me and lunch full broad side of his torpedos, only to shot at him with my two front turrets, lining in last moment, and citadel him from almost full health to zero. Then, few games later, driving Omaha and died from one salvo of other BB in similar but opposite sittuation. I think, if You can handle this RNG crazynes, You can find some joy in BB gameplay. And absolutly worst is not South Carolina but Kawachi or what ever is colled, this tier III piece of junk, with 9km range of fire - worst then anything else imo. :) From the point of balancing. I think BB should have passive ability of fire fighting (not the one by Domage Control but automatic one) that reduce time of burning to half. They have more crew to fight them and intensive rate of fire of cruisers, can put many more fires under constant artillery barrage. But there will be no more situation, that one salvo burn BB for over a minute, because there is no DC to deal with it or you dont want to use it for silly one salvo, lucky hit.
jingles what do you shoot at a st louis when in a BB simple get in close and let loose the secondary guns and open up with the mains AP at the lower hull and HE at the upper hull
Slowly getting through the IJN BB line and I can confirm, even when I was 3-4 km away from someone to have a moderate chance of hitting something and hitting below deck at the center or below the turrets of ships I hardly ever got any of those 'big hits' that I'd usually wish for. I started firing more HE than AP at times cause I was sick and tired of waiting 30 seconds to hit with a single shot for 1000 :/
Corodej except in HS, you can fail up to rank 20 to get the "free reward" losses/draws do not hurt you. I'd sort of like to see something in here. at the lower ranks, a loss/draw should be "bad" but it shoudln't be as offset as a win. maybe 2 loss/draw = 1 star loss, 1 win = 1 star gained. and have it work up to the first reward rank (and have the reward be somethjing generic, maybe 1 of each flag? maybe that's too much, but something) at lets people at least work up to reward. plus, when the 'season' resets, does everyone go back to rank 25, or will there be some type of MMR memory (as in HS) meaning if you got say rank 8, you fell back to rank 16. if you were at rank 16, you went back to 20. this keeps the starter ranks free of unicums, and having the battles thrown by the disparity of players.
shades921 In this case you just have to have enough luck to get to the top. Yesterday I averaged doing over double my own ships hp, and lost over a dozen games in a row. The won I finally won and called it a night, I was team killed at the start and my team managed to win. So if you have enough luck you can get to the top rank and completely suck. Also it does not matter how good you are if your team probably forgets how to breath half the time.

post 4.1 release, I've been able to get 2 or 3 citadel hits per match in tier V BBs. The key, I've found, is getting close and taking advantage of the accuracy buff at med/close range.
South C Worst Battleship? I'd rather sail the South C the the Kawachi. Slow, Less range then the South C turns like a brick. Also I feel like 3km is a little short.. 5km would be better cause at least at 5 km you stand a chance about getting rid of a DD.
***** 2 knots faster doesn't make it fast. At least the SC can hit beyond 10km. The Kawachi can't even hit that far. It's often badly hurt by the time it gets in range of anything.
MrAlbinocreeper IT has littler armor, by the time it gets into brawl range it's taken a pounding without being able to return fire. The turrets on both sides turn so slowly that you often are lucky to get a shot off before something ducks into cover.

Aim for the waterline not the hull!! Wait for them to turn broadside and wreak hell! You can get major citadels on cruisers with AP easily i got 5 on an omaha with my Kongo! Your shots should hit the middle of their ship, not the front! :P *Eating cornflakes intensifies* Or maybe US battleships are bad at citadels compared to my Japanese battleships, that could always be the case lol
Jingles, how do you get your camera to follow your shells at around 20:35? I know of the control that lets you do it after you fired, but that just makes me fire the guns, and if I fire all the guns and then press it, it just tells me my guns are reloading.
Jingles you are not aiming very well at all - I noticed you aim Higher than the ship (~upper half the Hull) you are targetting. And with that you either hit the Main belt that is well protected or the un-critical part of the ship. The Area you get a Citadel is usually near to the water line. And thats why you are not getting any Citadel. Sorry, but I think it's rather your aim rather than RNG. Yes Sure RNG for BBs are annoying at times, but it is actually Much Much Much easier than how you describe if you aim properly.
Since you asked the question Jingles I'll throw in my 2 cents. The most frustrating thing for me about Battleship play is the severe RNG that happens with the damage, so I'm definitely on the side of more consistent damage per hit than the wildly random results we get now.
well tier 5 and that is taking into account skills and components that extend range up to a 1.5K so you dont have to be within that range....Hopefully.
Yeah ... I tried holding down Ctrl and then left clicking a target, my main guns just shot a salvo - so that does not work for me and thats with default settings.
I've noticed the same trend in which I score barely any citadel hits when I drive my battleship s, whereas I score plenty of citadels when driving my cruisers
I definitely like the idea of a smoother damage curve on the test server than what we have now on BB's. Right it's kind of like throwing crap against a wall and seeing what you can get to stick.
I feel like the citadel issue expands to the live server right now, I've played probably 20ish battles in my Fusou and I've barely gotten any citadels, where back in the CBT the Fusou was a citadel-printing machine.
well I don't have problems firing ap at lightly armoured cruisers, if I fire a broadside i mostly penetrate their citadels, in only switch to he for destroyers since i've never hit a citadel on them lol
In the last game i played in my yamato on the test server, i got 2 citidel pens on the 2 ships that sailed broadside on to me, the citidel pens are just as frequent but often regular shell hits deal much more consistant damage, often i get no citidel and still do 20000+dmg. So yes Jingles you are correct on the consistant dmg and it appears that rng is trolling you.
Jingles you can one shot a st louis with a tier 4 wyoming at that kind of range even now in the live game. Just aim for the water line or slightly above and hit his citadels.
I made the South Carolina work, but ONLY in tier II-III battles. You can citadel the crap out of the IJN CLs and Chesters, too. I've had lucky citadels on St Louis but not often. They're the only problem in those battles.

i think the smooth Battleship AP dam would be great, but then when you do get those citadel pens, maybe a larger dam spike there. these are big guns and you'd think wreck MUCH harder than a cruisers or destroyers gun.
I believe to get citadel penetrations you need to aim at their waterline.. All the critical parts of the ship are just under the waterline on most ships...

le good liberator of eastern yurop I just dont understand what they done in open beta, the game runs perfectly for me in closed beta, now i can't play the game because sound stuttering and I'm constantly under 20 FPS on low settings. in closed beta 40-45 on medium.... that's what pisses me off.

found the best BB to one shot kill cruisers due to citadel penetration is the Arkansas Beta, the caliber is just right for any cruiser but the St. Louis on other BB citadels are extremely rare overall at least in my experience

One thing I try and do in BBs is aim at roughly the waterline and double click to fire a full broadside. I don't know if that's effective but even without citadel pens it still does Metric shit tons of damage. Also WG is making a video to explain where Citadels are and where to shoot them. But Citadels should be where American armor is thickest.

Well neither disagree nor could I agree, I like the spike in dmg that I can do right now as it is what excites me and give me goose bumps in special times, however if I ever meet the situation that Jingles spoke about where I rarely deal citadales hits (which I have never experienced that, I've always got good aim and never failed to satisfy my expectations in dmg dealt) then I would have to agree with the smooth dmg curve game mechanics. Personally I prefer right now, just as it is, because this is exactly what I am expecting from a battleship game play.

Common reasons Cruisers don't protect BBs from aircraft.
1. BB has range and they tend to like to sit at max range......cruiser cant do anything at that range, gets bored, leaves you.
2. BB goes off on his own cause "he's a BB". cruiser, not wanting to suicide, goes other way with the team
3. BB goes to a massive fk fest of BBs. cruiser, with its low caliber guns, short range, and easy to pen citadels. decides to find a more easy target to fight that wont involve it getting focus fired as its guns fail to do much dmg vs BBs(except for fires)
4. Cruiser sees planes. cruiser heads to planes.
other than these, i'm fine following a BB in my cruiser, BB provides me some protection in a fight.
but sadly, its rare that a "BB captain who thinks he's a captial ship" actually works with the team and goes in ranges that a cruiser can lend its fire as well.
also keep in mind IJN cruisers aren't AA cruiser. they heavy cruisers mostly. focusing on torps over AA.
and the Atlanta has short range. AA alone isn't going to pay the repair bill. i need to hunt down DDs and cruisers. as my 120mm guns are next to useless vs BBs (350+ hits to kill a Warspite.....yeah...that bad)

Arenta Tano I love stalking friendly BBs in my Atlanta. They usually get focus fired as I let the HE rain down on everything in range. I had a game which I believe was 500ish hits across 4 BBs doing 86k HE damage and 30k fire damage.
Oh yeah, as a CV player I drool over lone BB warriors. Easy pickings.

In my experience on the test the Cit pen medel seems less frequent but you still get near cit pen dmg roles. I love this no, more 830 dmg from my 14 inch guns. I would have to agree with what you said although i still had quite a few cit pens. But the volley to volley dmg was more consistent for the better.

i saw when you shot on the st. louis you aimed to high, I think you have to hit in the waterline to do citadel penetrations
Battleships are the RNG hell, the real Heart of Darkness when it comes to firing. Had a games with six, perfect aimed,medium range salvos, completly missing cruiser, and ones, with three salvos in the row, with over 80% shots hitting in each, on similar distance.
Lived thru close engagement with Omaha or Phoenix, who was charging from front, with most of my guns pointed in the other direction, waiting for him to pass me and lunch full broad side of his torpedos, only to shot at him with my two front turrets, lining in last moment, and citadel him from almost full health to zero. Then, few games later, driving Omaha and died from one salvo of other BB in similar but opposite sittuation.
I think, if You can handle this RNG crazynes, You can find some joy in BB gameplay.
And absolutly worst is not South Carolina but Kawachi or what ever is colled, this tier III piece of junk, with 9km range of fire - worst then anything else imo. :)
From the point of balancing. I think BB should have passive ability of fire fighting (not the one by Domage Control but automatic one) that reduce time of burning to half. They have more crew to fight them and intensive rate of fire of cruisers, can put many more fires under constant artillery barrage. But there will be no more situation, that one salvo burn BB for over a minute, because there is no DC to deal with it or you dont want to use it for silly one salvo, lucky hit.
jingles what do you shoot at a st louis when in a BB simple get in close and let loose the secondary guns and open up with the mains AP at the lower hull and HE at the upper hull

Slowly getting through the IJN BB line and I can confirm, even when I was 3-4 km away from someone to have a moderate chance of hitting something and hitting below deck at the center or below the turrets of ships I hardly ever got any of those 'big hits' that I'd usually wish for. I started firing more HE than AP at times cause I was sick and tired of waiting 30 seconds to hit with a single shot for 1000 :/

Corodej except in HS, you can fail up to rank 20 to get the "free reward" losses/draws do not hurt you. I'd sort of like to see something in here. at the lower ranks, a loss/draw should be "bad" but it shoudln't be as offset as a win. maybe 2 loss/draw = 1 star loss, 1 win = 1 star gained. and have it work up to the first reward rank (and have the reward be somethjing generic, maybe 1 of each flag? maybe that's too much, but something) at lets people at least work up to reward.
plus, when the 'season' resets, does everyone go back to rank 25, or will there be some type of MMR memory (as in HS) meaning if you got say rank 8, you fell back to rank 16. if you were at rank 16, you went back to 20. this keeps the starter ranks free of unicums, and having the battles thrown by the disparity of players.

Yesterday I averaged doing over double my own ships hp, and lost over a dozen games in a row. The won I finally won and called it a night, I was team killed at the start and my team managed to win.
So if you have enough luck you can get to the top rank and completely suck. Also it does not matter how good you are if your team probably forgets how to breath half the time.

post 4.1 release, I've been able to get 2 or 3 citadel hits per match in tier V BBs. The key, I've found, is getting close and taking advantage of the accuracy buff at med/close range.
South C Worst Battleship? I'd rather sail the South C the the Kawachi. Slow, Less range then the South C turns like a brick.
Also I feel like 3km is a little short.. 5km would be better cause at least at 5 km you stand a chance about getting rid of a DD.
***** 2 knots faster doesn't make it fast. At least the SC can hit beyond 10km. The Kawachi can't even hit that far. It's often badly hurt by the time it gets in range of anything.
OneBigBugga Kawachi is not a ranged BB its a brawler BB, turrets on each side help aquire the target faster, and more health
MrAlbinocreeper IT has littler armor, by the time it gets into brawl range it's taken a pounding without being able to return fire. The turrets on both sides turn so slowly that you often are lucky to get a shot off before something ducks into cover.

Aim for the waterline not the hull!! Wait for them to turn broadside and wreak hell! You can get major citadels on cruisers with AP easily i got 5 on an omaha with my Kongo! Your shots should hit the middle of their ship, not the front! :P *Eating cornflakes intensifies*

Jingles, how do you get your camera to follow your shells at around 20:35? I know of the control that lets you do it after you fired, but that just makes me fire the guns, and if I fire all the guns and then press it, it just tells me my guns are reloading.
Jingles you are not aiming very well at all - I noticed you aim Higher than the ship (~upper half the Hull) you are targetting. And with that you either hit the Main belt that is well protected or the un-critical part of the ship.
The Area you get a Citadel is usually near to the water line. And thats why you are not getting any Citadel. Sorry, but I think it's rather your aim rather than RNG. Yes Sure RNG for BBs are annoying at times, but it is actually Much Much Much easier than how you describe if you aim properly.
Since you asked the question Jingles I'll throw in my 2 cents. The most frustrating thing for me about Battleship play is the severe RNG that happens with the damage, so I'm definitely on the side of more consistent damage per hit than the wildly random results we get now.
I think 5km is a reasonable distance.

I tried holding down Ctrl and then left clicking a target, my main guns just shot a salvo - so that does not work for me and thats with default settings.

What ammo to fire at a St. Louis..? For me HE, cause if I can damage or knock out one or more of his guns, why not keep his dpm down?
I've noticed the same trend in which I score barely any citadel hits when I drive my battleship s, whereas I score plenty of citadels when driving my cruisers

I definitely like the idea of a smoother damage curve on the test server than what we have now on BB's. Right it's kind of like throwing crap against a wall and seeing what you can get to stick.
I feel like the citadel issue expands to the live server right now, I've played probably 20ish battles in my Fusou and I've barely gotten any citadels, where back in the CBT the Fusou was a citadel-printing machine.

well I don't have problems firing ap at lightly armoured cruisers, if I fire a broadside i mostly penetrate their citadels, in only switch to he for destroyers since i've never hit a citadel on them lol
In the last game i played in my yamato on the test server, i got 2 citidel pens on the 2 ships that sailed broadside on to me, the citidel pens are just as frequent but often regular shell hits deal much more consistant damage, often i get no citidel and still do 20000+dmg. So yes Jingles you are correct on the consistant dmg and it appears that rng is trolling you.
Jingles you can one shot a st louis with a tier 4 wyoming at that kind of range even now in the live game. Just aim for the water line or slightly above and hit his citadels.
Ranked sounds good. I only hope they manage to keep a steady amount of players active within it.
I made the South Carolina work, but ONLY in tier II-III battles. You can citadel the crap out of the IJN CLs and Chesters, too. I've had lucky citadels on St Louis but not often. They're the only problem in those battles.

i think the smooth Battleship AP dam would be great, but then when you do get those citadel pens, maybe a larger dam spike there. these are big guns and you'd think wreck MUCH harder than a cruisers or destroyers gun.

citadels hits always appear random to me and its not just in my BS i hit the same spot and its random to me
I believe to get citadel penetrations you need to aim at their waterline.. All the critical parts of the ship are just under the waterline on most ships...
I'm a tier 10 BB (Yamato) and I don't catch fire that often... I have also a T7 CA and DD... but driving a battleship for me is the most fun

found the best BB to one shot kill cruisers due to citadel penetration is the Arkansas Beta, the caliber is just right for any cruiser but the St. Louis on other BB citadels are extremely rare overall at least in my experience
it wasn't a statistical anomaly jingles... on the open beta server me and 3 friends played about 20 matches and scored about 3 citadel hits combined
