Hi Gizane Campos, thanks for the valuable information. I am curious to know whether this 5 years count starts from the day of Expression of interest (EOI) submission? In my case, I had to wait 2.2 years to get my first residence card through article 88.2 after my EOI.
Hello @vectorzone1598, thanks for the question. As has been widely reported by several industry players in Portugal, it is still not absolutely clear when the clock starts. The new law refers to the moment when the residence permit is requested, which can be interpreted in several different ways, considering that the processes are all slightly different. That said, although it is defensible in the EOI to assume that it will be from the moment it is requested, it is safer to wait for the regulation of the aforementioned law to have clarification on this particular aspect.
@@GlobalCitizenSolutions Thank you very much for your kind response. Yes, I don't understand why this particular law is so ambiguous. I hope you will update about it when they clarify.

Can citizenship be refused if unable to pass the language test because I have been a permanent resident for nearly 20 years and I still can't understand Portuguese
Hi @davidgoode5768, as per our previous reply according to the Nationality Law, one of the requirements for obtaining Portuguese citizenship by time of residence is to obtain A2 level certification in Portuguese. Therefore, yes, citizenship will be denied if this requirement is not met and proven.
Dude if you want to be Portuguese learn the language. Its a very fair requirement, I don’t know where you’re from but you probably expect people granted citizenship in your country to be able to speak a reasonable level of the native language
Hi @ahmedshamim4363! Thanks for your question. According to the approved wording the counting date will begin when the residence title is requested. For more details on the means of proof and procedural timeline details, we must wait for the regulation of this law to be approved and published as well, which should happen on the 90 days following the entering into force of the concerned amendments.
Hey @alaiaadam5767 , thanks for the question. Yes, Portugal allows you to have more than one nationality. You can even be a citizen of the USA and Portugal at the same time, without having to give up one of your nationalities.
Hi @adrian14752, thank you for the question. Currently applications are taking 2 to 3 years. Please feel free to get in touch with us so we can help you understand the pathways available for US Citizens. beglobal.link/ContactUs
Hi @Bogo603, thanks for the question: Yes, there is that possibility. The fact of having performed non-compulsory military service in a foreign State may be grounds for opposition to the acquisition of nationality. In cases with these characteristics, the nationality process must be prepared with special attention so that the claim is robust and duly substantiated by other signs of connection with the Portuguese community.
If my maternal grandfather was born on Madeira, he and his parents emigrated to Hawaii in the 1800's how do I apply for a visa or residency status?
