  • 1 Negative, 1 scanner, 1 computer and 2 software packages! This is my in detail comparison between Silverfast and Vuescan, both the most current versions, recorded on may 28th '23.
It took quite some time to get to a conclusion, but you can see every setting that I made in Silverfast and Vuescan to really understand the comparison. In the end, my preference is Silverfast, alltough not by much. I can imagine it also depends on the subject and colours of the negative.
Hopefully you it gives you extra information for your work with analog photography! Any questions/discussions, please take it to the comments!

Have you ever compared the plustek scanning and dslr/mirrorless scanning ? Just curious. I’m thinking about grabbing the plustek 8300 ai !

Hey! No I havent actually. I've looked at it, but did not opt for it. My main reason for it was that the setup for have too many variables that could go wrong ish. You need a "perfect" setup to setup your digital camera, have the lighting perfect, the camera can be angled a bit also etc. The plustek, it can take a bit more time, the scanning is easy, not a lot can go wrong and the scans are consistent every time and do not differ from role to role. As far as I have seen on YT, can really can get good results from it! Depending on your camera/lens/setup
As far as I know, the 8300 is similar as the 8200, but faster, which is a good thing :) I have a different video on "how to scan with silverfast", the results will have a slight magenta tint in it, easily adjusted with the white balance

Actually in VueScan Pro you could choose Film vendor and model, same as in Silverfast. I wonder what the results will be then. :)

I own a Plustek 8300i, and I dislike Silverfast. I much preferred working with VueScan, and I got far greater results.

I think both are tricky, I also had bad results with Silverfast in the beginning, but with scanning RAW and getting rid of the magenta tint in post, for me, with Silverfast, it is less for me to get the same result. I also made a video about my process with Silverfast: th-cam.com/video/FgBBEo9NsYA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QmjdplbiuR8m7F06
Some time ago I also bought Vuescan and did some testing again, not online here. For me, the photo I can from Vuescan is just a lot flatter so I need to edit more with it in post, less so with Silverfast to get the same results.

Did you ever get sharpen to work with VueScan? I put it on Heavy but the TIFF never seems to apply any sharpness to the final TIFF, only the scan preview

Haha nope, I've tried to get a better/sharper result straight from Vuescan so there is less work in editing, but no success, thats why Im a Silverfast now, just need to edit the magenta tint and Im done, if I shot the photo correctly ;)

So more detail for silver fast but vuesan picks up better colours?

Looking at the unedited, I would say the colours are better for Vuescan, but overall detail and sharpness are better in Silverfast. For editing, The only thing you need to do with Silverfast is adjust the white balance for the magenta tint. With Vuescan, I need to edit more
