A horror ARG that deals with how the "protagonist's" actions affected his remaining family is super cool. I love how Nils isn't driven mad or forced down the same path as his father. Instead he learned from what he did and committed himself to being a better father to his own kids. Also the fact that he doesn't forgive his father, but he is willing to talk to him? This whole ARG just feels a lot more mature than other ones I know, and not in the "adult" blood and gore sense, but rather that Nils feels likes a realistic person trying to get over the trauma of his sister's early death and his father's neglect. You could even take the supernatural elements as a metaphor and have the whole thing just be about Nils' journey to accepting the bad things in his childhood and moving on from them. It's refreshing to have a story with such a mature and, actually, kinda uplifting ending.
Fr, a story about trying to revive the dead and an intelligent game AI that DOESN'T end with a demon or a serial killer? In 2024? This story is so refreshing
Your quotation marks are wrong. It is only him being the protagonist that is debatable, not that the actions are his. Therefore it should be “The “Orotagonist”’s actions”
Put it into words better than I ever could, mate! Seeing realistic reactions from fictional characters in a horror story around humans and their grief is so nice to see, since I feel a lot of writers (in general, not just in the horror or ARG genre) kind of lose that, which is hard to capture, so it makes sense. Seeing someone do that feels like a really strong and solid writing feat. :)
Y'know, when Matt announced he retired, I thought of that one scene in KP1 where Master Oogway gives away his staff to Shi Fu. Now I realize, it's more accurate that Matt gave away an infinite tower of worksheets and sticky notes to Tom instead of a wisdom staff.
It was an emotional moment when MatPat announced his retirement. But now, seeing him on TH-cam here and there is kind of confusing. Why is he still on Game Theory anyway? What's the point of retirement? I thought he was done with TH-cam and ready to move on-to be a father and husband, to be a fan, to be a random theorist on the internet like us. But here he is, still on Game Theory or GTLive. I don't know.
I feel like the imagery of the scarecrow taking the body in the first game shows that the mother ended up taking her off life support, which is a brutal and tough decision. I think that's how their marriage broke apart with his hatred of her tough decision.
Even without the brain scan getting reverse image searched, the game itself well hints at it: an object replicating uncontrollably until the game crashes. Sounds like the video game version of cancer, where cells replicate uncontrollably until the host dies.
This is so refreshing. Something that has a sort of final, actual conclusive end with closure. Poppy and FNAF and Banban feels like these forever horrors, nothing is ever answered or solved. Nothing feels good. It's this nebulous fog of maybe's that will never end. This was good.
Agreed - the downside of turning these sorts of stories into a whole franchise like with FNAF and the rest, instead of keeping it an effective one-off, is that the in-story suffering and horrors can never truly be allowed to end if you want to keep it relevant, so the audience never gets that catharsis.
Manfred demonising his wife as well as the image of Thea being taken away by the scarecrow always made me think that maybe Marta was the one to take their daughter off life support. It wouldn't be uncommon for brain cancer patients to end up brain dead due to intracranial swelling and be on life support despite having no way of recovering. Maybe he never forgave his wife for withdrawing support as he was never able to process that his daughter was dead.
To me as an Aussie, the coloured 'crows' actually look pretty instantly recognisable as a galah and two lorikeets. Maybe he moved to Australia to get away from his past?
I think the other two being colorful is more symbolic of getting away from a dark past into a vibrant new life as opposed to any literal locations or birds.
@goob12309 To anyone that doesn't understand, in the GTLive videos of Catastrophe Crow MatPat said he was "shoving and rubbing" against everything incase of secret rooms.
Hear me out, in the original game where the 2 scarecrows come to your character after you fall down the stairs, it was supposed to represent Marta and Nils coming to check if Thea was ok. Manfred still saw Marta and Nils as monsters, but he was atleast able to accept the fact they were trying to check on Thea to make sure she was ok.
Im glad that even though he wasn't going to forgive him, he still talked to his father. I feel that a lot of games, and storys in general tend to push this idea that if you don't forgive someone you hold a grudge against them.
I don't know if anyone has ever talked about it, but a cool detail I realised is that the mothers name sounds like martyr, which is what she was. Her reputation was martyred during Manfred's obsession within the game
13:20 Consider the narrator. Originally, you were given the story through the eyes of Manfred, depicting others the way he saw them. Now, you're given the story from Nils' perspective, depicting others the way he saw them. Neither view is "the truth." "The truth" lies somewhere in between. Manfred viewed his wife as an obstacle to his progress in resurrecting his daughter, and saw Nils as assisting her in her obstruction. Nils was separated from Manfred as a boy and had his mother's perspective impressed onto him as he was raised. He likely only really remembers his sister getting sick, her passing, his father being stricken by grief, and leaving with his mother. Everything else he "remembers" about the events were stories from his mother, heavily influencing what he *perceives* to be the truth, but is not. Kind of an extremely obvious thing to overlook, and pretty scummy to accept one unreliable narrator's perspective but disregard the other's as the lies of some monster. A father desperately tries to make his family whole again after a tragedy befalls them, albeit misguidedly, his wife leaves and takes his remaining child with her, leaving him alone with his grief that turns into resentment before he spirals downward into the darkness. The son grows up separated from his father, his memories of him slowly replaced with memories of stories of him, and eventually creates a new version of his father's game, altering it to fit *his* perspective and tell the story as he "remembers" it.
Thank you for typing this out. I didn't really think that Manfred was any villian or monster in this story. Sure he neglected his family after his daughter's death but it was due to immense grief he was dealing with. Not to justify his actions of course but he needed support from rest of his family at such a vulnerable period of his life which he didn't got and hence he ended up killing himself. The whole reason he even built that game was because of his daughter's drawing for him. That game was dedicated for her but then she died and rest is history. Manfred really wasn’t the bad guy here-just a person whose whole world was shattered, and the overwhelming grief led him down a dark path. I’m glad he found solace in the end.
Yes, I was thinking the same thing. He'd lost his daughter and was trying to deal with his grief, only to have that compounded when his wife left him. Yes, grief meant he wasn't there for his family when he should have been- but arguably, they weren't there for him either. I don't feel like any single person was the sole 'bad guy' or 'monster' in this, just a family messily dealing with a tragedy.

In all honesty, I never forgot about catastrophe crow, it has been one of my favorite game theory videos ever and I’m so happy that it’s getting another video.
I don’t know if this has been discussed yet, but has anyone else noticed that Nils’ name also translates to “crow”? Just as Thea’s name translates from English to Crow as “crow”, so too Nils’ name translates from Crow to English as “crow”. I just learned about Crow Catastrophe, so I don’t know if it’s been discussed online yet, but I did just notice that while watching this video!
Not sure if anyone has noticed but at 6:58 there is a typo on the bottom of the screen where it says “save” instead of “safe”. I know this is probably a complete nothing-burger, but it would be funny to me if this typo somehow plays into one of MatPats ARG projects he’s working on

Weird coincidence that just happened to me is I’m on the bus walking this and as Tom said ‘Opus legacy’ I drove past something with a sign where the main word on it was opus. It freaked me out for a second ngl.
The crow 64 vid was and still is one of my favorites, I'm glad it's back
“SUFFER! SUFFER! SUFFER!”
More like, CHAOS CHAOS CHAOS

4:40 well about that tom.. some of us down own a computer or even a console playable edit: also you guys are doing great keep up the good work
I clicked on this so fast! Loved the first Catastrophe Crow theory, so excited to see what y’all have found. Also poor Tom😂 “suffer! Suffer! Suffer!”

Father… it’s me Nills… I did it. I found you. You were right where you said you would be. You were there. (altered)
Now tell me that doesn’t sound like something he would tell him.
them chanting "suffer" is absolutely fantastic.
they wee made for each other.

Congrats for getting on the trending page for gaming! #5 in just three hours is amazing!
In all honesty, I never forgot about catastrophe crow, it has been one of my favorite game theory videos ever and I’m so happy that it’s getting another video.
"Suffer suffer suffer suffer"
- probably also Scott cawthon when he needs another fnaf theory
i just rewatched the other crow 64 theory the other day. so glad it's finally back!
Wow I remember when Adam first started it, used to be obsessed with it. It’s crazy how far it’s come and that it’s finally been fully solved.
Tom, I Gotta Say. Thanks For Bringing This Back! Along With The Rest Of T.G.T. 👏👏👏
0:30 no, that’s a magpie thing
-Brought to you by bird theory
crows like shiny things too! i'm pretty sure it's just a corvid thing!
Im so glad you guys are revisiting this again 😊
Not sure if anyone has noticed but at 6:58 there is a typo on the bottom of the screen where it says “save” instead of “safe”. I know this is probably a complete nothing-burger, but it would be funny to me if this typo somehow plays into one of MatPats ARG projects he’s working on
I know I'm not the only one who's been waiting for another Game Theory video on Catastrophe Crow
9:20 the second I saw the cat heads multiply I INSTANTLY knew it was brain cancer, since cancer cells rapidly multiply. It was so satisfying to hear you call out the other evidence for it though.

Oh Yeah. Great visual portrayal.
@@MissCaraMint unrelated but as a trained singer, I think it's awesome that you're taking voice lessons and I bet that you'll be amazing! :)
@@JKBisms Why thank you. I did do some really good singing recently. You can find my version of Kløvereng on my channel, and Ive going to be uploading "Poor Wandering One" soon too.
Oh my god Ive actually been waiting for this one, everytime I think about ARGs this one pops into my head
Ive been waiting for another catastrophe crow video for ages FINALLYYY
17:41 this part reminds me of that one help wanted level in curse of dreadbear, it’s the one were the nightmares appear at the doors and they looking side to side
I literally cried at the end that was so sad! At least if this is true Nils can finally focus on his own legacy and Thea and Manfred can rest in peace in the end I feel bad for everyone!

you know, I was a bit skeptical to continue watching game theory after matpat left, but I'm really glad I gave this a shot, you have amazing energy that really perfectly captures the same magical theory crafting passion MatPat had back then, it felt like I was watching that original crow 64 all over again.
It's great to have you Tom
4:58 no give me the explanation while i eat im too dumb for that
nobody understands how excited i am for this sequel

Tom: “An arg that would slowly fall into obscurity as the internet moved on”
**slowly pans into a FNAF video**
man, according to Nils family gravestones he decided to have his first kid at 23 years old, and his wife was 21, those are very very early ages to have kids at.
So they were just kids when they fell in love and now growing up. Makes sense..
0:59 speaking of Petscop…
WHEN ARE YOU GUYS GONNA FINISH THE SERIES????
I'm pretty sure (but I could be wrong) that MatPat has said that other channels have made better theories on it than Game Theory could ever make, so they decided to not make a final theory so those ones wouldn't be overshadowed by the Game Theory one.
NO WAY THEY FIGURED IT OUT
@Lala-q1p ur pfp is blatantly stolen and you only have 1 video and 0 subs so i dont wanna hear it
