as Hunters, Globally, we face enough hate and pushback from outside. We should all just support each other and stand together - doesn't matter if you hunt with a spear, gun, bow, crossbow..... whatever you hunt with, let's rather learn from each other and stand together against the anti-hunting groups.

So happy to see so many positive uplifting comments! This discussion has been going on for decades. I remember when crossbows first started gaining traction... the stick bow hunters sneered at them, said they took all the skill out of hunting. The primitive "build your bow" crowd sneered at the "store bought" stick bows. It goes on and on.
I hunt on my own property with a crossbow, and really enjoy it.
    * do what makes you happy.
    * let others do what makes them happy.
    * teach a kid to shoot and hunt in what ever way you want. The kid will be a better person for it.

I hunted with a compound bow for years. I just got my first crossbow. The Killer Instinct Vital X 430. I only hunt for the freezer. You cant eat antlers. It matters not what I use to hunt with. The older I get the easier I need it to be.

@@goldentrucker7921 I like it. The one problem I never thought about when getting a crossbow was a target. It hits fast and hard even at 60 yds. They sink to the fletching or takes two men and a boy to pull them out. I have yet to solve the target problem.

Can you imagine that some of these guys spend so much of their time bashing crossbow hunters for ways they take game to feed their families. We have so much negative light shined down on our sport that we don't need each other trashing one or the other. I'm a huge advocate for crossbow hunting as it's the easiest way to get a child into the woods. We need to work all as one to help keep the sport alive. Great video man.

No, you are missing the point like most cross gunners. Crossbows don't belong in the special archery season. You people are the most entitled lazy bunch in the woods. The only reason they became legal in most states was because of politicians buying stock in crossbow companies. If you want to hunt with a crossbow, do it and rifle season.

I'd change the question to, "Do crossbows make you a better harvester?" My state is overrun with deer and we can legally bait; you can still choose to "hunt", but you can fill several freezers without hunting like we did 40 years ago. I like eating deer more than I like looking at deer, so this works good for me. As an example, I had 9 bucks on the trail cam closest to my house this evening in 2 hours; 4 of them were mature deer. I had eleven on the same camera 3 days ago; six of them mature. It is insane in Middle Georgia and not enough hunters are acting like harvesters.
I went from a recurve to the x bow when my shoulder wouldn't let me practice enough to be confident. I'm very happy with my decision.

I hunt with wood self bows and laminated bows that I make myself. Heavy arrows, 500-600 grains, 155-160 fps and I usually get 3-5 exciting bow hunting encounters with public land deer and private land deer in 20-30 partial days in the field in a season. No stands. always from the ground. We have 1 x 2 mile squares of land here or 1x1 mile blocks and I always approach with the wind in my face towards known bedding or feeding areas depending on the time of day.
When I want to "cheat", I cheat all the way and use a modern crossbow with a scope. I don't get to see 30-50 shot opportunities per year - I usually get 3-6 shot opportunities including gun season. If I want to fill my buck tag, I have learned to shoot the first tasty young buck I encounter. Early season 2-3 year old bucks taste so much better than a 4-5 year old warrior at the end of the rut when he has lost 30 pounds in 3 weeks from running and fighting. Have you ever done some full body workouts like squats or deadlifts and gotten too sore to move? That's whats going on with a rut season buck. Sore muscles, low calories, burning fat, extra lactic acid in the sore muscles, wounds, infections, gangrene. I'm not about that trophy instagram BS. I wanna eat clean. low fat, low cholesterol red meat and I need 200 pounds a year to keep me from supporting factory farms.
I follow the strategy of shooting the first deer I see because I might not get another chance. Our deer population is good, but I'm not in the suburbs where there are millions. Young deer taste 10x better than an old wounded buck with a pus blister in his backstrab from fighting! Our yearling deer are 80-90 pounds and after I get that first 25-50 pounds of meat in the freezer and the stress melts away, I go out and have fun with the longbow.
I upgraded my crossbow last year after my 3rd longbow encounter of the year on public land (no meat in the freezer) and no shot opportunity. The amish teenagers around here have electric scooters, solar panels to charge their flashlights and thousand dollar crossbows so I caved in and joined the 450fps gang lol. I shoot heavy bolts around 350 fps and can hit a dip can at 50 yards in 3 shot groups. It shoots better than a shotgun with slugs and just as lethal.
I swear the electric bikes and scooters should be banned unless you're disabled. I am completely fine with crossbows to help meet population goals when people aren't harvesting enough ( I don't like when state governments try to shrink deer herds). But these fucking amish kids can move so silently on these electric scooters, so fast that it puts everyone else at a disadvantage. They are literally doing deer drives on these scooters with big mud tires and they can go 15-20 mph off road for miles. They have trailers for them so if they harvest a deer in the middle of the 2 mile block they can gut that thing and tow it to the van at 20 mph and be on to the next spot in 20 minutes.

Ok, here is my way of seeing it. I hunt heavily pressured Michigan public land. My goal is to use my compound but if the tree or locations calls for it, I'll use the crossbow. It's just a tool. However compound takes more practice and skill, and stick and string take even more. Some people just don't have the time, knowledge, or ability to put in the practice necessary. Here is my analogy. You can love to take pictures and use your $3,000 Sony camera (and know all the right settings and have the right lenses for each situation) to take some great pictures. OR you might be the guy that just uses his cell phone. The point is that they are both out there doing something that they enjoy. There is room for all of us.

Great comment. I turn 66 four days from now and our archery season opens Sep 7th. I've been a bowhunter for many years. I absolutely love the sport and still get just as excited for opening day as I ever have. I'm fortunate to not have any shoulder issues. I draw just as much weight as always. But it's much harder and I literally have to hit the gym to do archery oriented exercises. But I also hunt with a crossbow. I bought my first crossbow seven years ago and have killed many deer with it. I enjoy hunting with both weapons. The crossbow is just a lot of fun to hunt with. And when people ask if it's easier to hunt with a crossbow, well, the answer is yes. It's easier. You don't have to move. You have a scope. But it's not like you're hunting with a high powered rifle. For the most part you are still limited to a shot of about thirty to forty yards, and you still have to get your range right. In my state crossbows are treated the same as compounds and recurves. The bottom line is that it's up to the state to regulate the number of deer taken so that we have a healthy sustainable herd. And we do. I don't see that crossbow hunting has had any impact on our harvest numbers. The good thing is that crossbow hunting helps get more people in the woods. Hunter numbers have steadily declined for years. I live in a state that has eleven million people but only about 600 thousand licensed hunters, so we definitely need more hunter participation. But when people bash crossbow hunting, just take a look at their compound. 340 feet per sec bows, fiber optic sights, etc

@@johngarnergarner6724 thank you. I've also been asked this many times. If you are using a crossbow, why don't you shoot them at farther distances? I answer is easy. When my Dad got me into Archery hunting in 1998 he taught me to never shoot past 25 yards. To me part of the challenge is to let them get as close as possible first because you can learn how much you can get away with. I've let them get within 5 yards before letting them have it. To me it's NOT all about the harvest like many people think, it's about being out there creating memories. Getting something is just a bonus.

@@jerryshowens3049 I have never killed a deer with a compound past 25 yards. I'm not a great shot. I'm a decent shot. But for the most part I am hunting in hardwood flats and I just about never get shots past 25 or 30 yards. And that's the same for the crossbow. I have taken a deer at about 55 yards with my crossbow but that's only on one occasion. Everything else is pretty much the same. But I definitely enjoy hunting with both. So when my bow season opens Sep 7th I'll be in a tree hoping for a nice velvet buck

Very well said, Matt! To make some kind of judgment on a hunter based solely on that one small moment where the shot is executed, and what tool they use to execute the shot is kinda silly. There' SO much more that goes into a hunt than the moment of the shot. In my mind, what marks a great hunter is someone who has great woodsmanship skills, a deep respect for the animal, and a firm ethic that drives which shot he or she will and will not take. With all that in place, the shot is really an afterthought. I know many people shooting crossbows, compounds, and yes, rifles, who meet that definition, and sadly, many who do not. The tool they use to make the shot doesn't factor into that at all. I'm 59 years old. I've hunted since I was 12, and I've killed deer with rifles, muzzleloaders, traditional bows, compounds, and crossbows. Throughout, what I've carried in my hands had no bearing on how I hunted. Thanks again and keep up the great content!

Great points. I just got into crossbow for the first time for this deer season, to extend my season forward by an entire month, while having the most rifle-like experience and ease I can get. Even if I were not an older guy with an injured shoulder (which I am), I would still lean toward crossbow, because working two jobs, I don't have the time for the extra practice required for ethical accuracy with a vertical bow. All that said, I do tip my cap to real vertical bow hunters for their greater challenge, all othe factors setting up the shot equal. I'm cool with vertical bowmen declaring themselves better hunters. They put in the marksmanship time, they have to get a bit closer to their quarry, and so can get their due. I'll just do my best to fill my tags regardless.

I love the tech tips you and Ranch Fairy give. So here is one from me. You must have seen videos of bow hunters stopping a deer for a shot by employing a short call. After taking the shot call again (preferably a grunt ). This often confuses the deer and keeps it from running away, or not as far. Hope this helps someone recover a deer.

I hunt with both, have made perfect shots and have screwed up shots with both. I think of them as each being better at different situations, much like a shotgun vs rifle. If I’m in a ladder stand with a shooting bar, the crossbow makes for a much easier shot. If I’m in the climber or lock on, the compound is much more convenient than free handing the front heavy crossbow. The crossbow is more cost effective and faster to get proficient with, the compound is more satisfying and engaging. Different tools, different experience, both equally viable. Shoot what makes you happy and practice on making good shots 👍

After 2 neck fusions I was told to stop shooting my bow so i got a crossbow. I loved my compound bow, light and quieter than a crossbow that's loud and heavy and you have to have enough room for the head so crossbow isn't great but I'm still hunting and that's what is important to me. I could give a crap less what someone thinks 🤔 Before my neck surgeries i could shoot with anyone, I'm very anal about having my equipment perfect and i work hard to deer hunt. I run cameras year around and am in the woods doing what needs done in 100 degree weather. In my opinion go hunt !! If you don't have time to practice every day with a bow buy a crossbow and practice and make sure its sighted in perfect and you know your effective range. A crossbow is a cheap way to go hunting. Go enjoy the woods !!!

The question is impossible to answer because with all things being equal it depends on the hunt. In a box blind on private land overlooking a field the crossbow has the easier hunt, 2 miles in on public land carrying a tree stand the vertical bow wins. I've hunted for 50 years and 2 years ago I tried a crossbow and hated it, It was awkward and clunky to carry with a stand and backpack on my back, with my bow I can just carry it with one hand, with the crossbow I needed both hands, the thing got snagged on every bush, it sucked getting into and out of the stand, in short my style of far back in public land hunting with a tree stand the crossbow offered no advantage, in fact it mostly sucked and I sold it half way into the season. BTW I use a lone wolf hand climber (so no shooting rail) and I found while practicing I could hold my bow at full draw much longer and steady than the crossbow, so again advantage vertical bow, but with a stand with a shooting rail the crossbow would probably have the advantage. The main advantage to a crossbow is not having to draw it when the deer is close, but I have rarely been busted drawing my vertical bow while up in a tree.

Also look at ones that aren’t comfortable in a tree stand. And you use what nature provides to conceal themselves. Which one would be more effective to use. Compound or crossbow? I always hunt from the ground. Never could afford blinds. I’ve killed deer that are trophies to me that most would laugh at. Hunting deer at eye level doesn’t get any harder. I’m also handicapped and it adds more difficulty to it all. I pride myself in getting 18 deer from the ground and mostly doe. But they all hold special memories. Everyone should turn all their attention into making them the best at whatever they hunt with instead of worrying about what someone else uses

I honestly wish we could just accept each other as hunters. If it's legal.... pick your poison. I am struggling a little because of a tear in my shoulder, and I LOVE my compound. I have both bows.... I just enjoy the compound. Some friends LOVE their crossbows, some love their compounds. SOME love shooting recurve or long bow.... it's all ok... you do you! Enjoy the hunt, enjoy God's gift of nature and being part of the cycle of life. Good luck, good hunting this fall! God Bless y'all

Crossbows are more lethal. I'm more of a harvester than a hunter when using my crossbow. If I want a challenge and a test of hunting skills, I'll take one of my trad bows which I will usually do once I have some venison in the freezer. I have a re-fitted compound but no interest in using it.

Kind of like assholes. Everybody has one, but ain't too the same. Yeah we found a way to live together. Go figure. Personally, I don't get it. I've shot/hunted both. Love them both. That's where I'm at. That's where I'll stay. Good luck to all your boys and gals!!!😉

Here would be a question for you is do you think social media is kind of the reason why there’s a divide between compound and crossbow or is it the crossbow world or people who go on TH-cam or other social media and how them shooting a 100 yards or is it that there are crossbow companies that offer a crossbow in rhe 500 fps but here would be another question or maybe a statement so if you shoot a crossbow at a 100 yards it looks bad but yet the compound bow hunter says shoot at a li get distance and makes that shorter shot easier and that’s okay just wondering what your thoughts are about that stuff thanks

Not even more skill. Just takes more time spent with the weapon, to get efficient.
But every weapon is that way. Practice more to get better with it.
Rifles can require oodles of tinkering too, if one chooses to get obsessive with it. Each particular rifle has a cartridge it shoots best with. A particular brand, then particular load and bullet. That can take alot of shooting to find what your gun prefers. Then, one can get fanatical, and really fine-tune that gun's performance with hand-loading. Tinkering with different powders and grain loads, etc. But that still doesn't make them a better hunter. They just choose to spend more time tinkering.

@@665motocross8 carry them around all day and see which is harder. My compound is featherlight compared to my crossbow. Walking with the crossbow requires way more work, which then becomes a skill with practice, right?
I don't sit in a tree, 'waiting' for deer, i still-hunt my way through the woods, 'hunting' for a deer.
Hunting can be as hard or as easy as one chooses to make it. One weapon can be easier than another. But none are 'easy', they all require practice. And one hunting method can be harder than another. Searching and seeking out a deer as opposed to sitting on one's butt in a tree.

Blah, blah, blah! A crossbow levels the playing field for anyone who wants to use one. I could take a 10 year old hunting & probably help them harvest a deer with a crossbow. Whether it's a grown man, woman, or child pulling the trigger, the same potential is there for all three. A crossbow is an equalizer. The same cannot be said for a vertical bow. I enjoy shooting a compound bow, but when the time comes where that's not possible my crossbow will be ready. Wisconsin was the first state to even have an archery season. Once crossbows became legal for all in 2014, it only took 3 seasons for crossbows to surpass the vertical bow deer harvest numbers. Keep in mind - the total harvest remained about the same. Many hunters just switched over to crossbows. Crossbows are here to stay! For those who try to define the hunter by what they use, they should probably get over themselves, & this goes both ways. I've seen crossbow hunters look down at those still using a compound bow, too. Seriously, we all need to get over ourselves & grow up! Good luck to everyone this coming season!

    These debates are stupid.
A compound bow is no more harder than a crossbow and hell the only reason for the debate was because it took decades to build the strength to loose war bows.
So unless your using a 225lb war bow with no let off you aren’t using a real bow period so no one is using a real bow anymore.

I believe I am entitled to whatever latitude my state's Department of Wildlife Resources grants for whatever weapons across whatever dates and whatever sex deer on said dates they deem appropriate based on their census of deer numbers in different counties, as well as local (farmer) tolerance for deer numbers. Full stop. I do not believe I'm entitled to say my shots are just as difficult as those of a vertical bow hunter. Those who put in that work are entitled to their sense of greater accomplishment, and I tip my blaze orange beanie to them.
