The average bow shooter can not shoot 100 yards lol... so i would assume the crossbow is going to be the winner for most humans.

Crossbow took the early lead, little or no warm up necessary.
Compound finished first but needed considerable warm up at that distance.
    I shoot both.
Thanks for doing the legwork to prove out some lingering thoughts!

As someone who's used both, Crossbows are easy to be over confident with, rush shots and do not stabilize near as good as a compound bow. I've only ever used mid grade bows and a high end Xbow (Ravin R29) a crossbow with a bipod would be super deadly in certain hunting situations but I think crossbows will wound a lot of deer in the future, more than a compound bow. Thanks for bringing this to light Chris.

I agree with your comment. But from my own personal experience (I hunt with a compound as well as a recurve crossbow) I have seen more deer wounded from inexperienced compound shooters. Obviously this isn’t the case with everyone but I have never lost a deer with my cross bow and I have lost one several years ago with my compound likely due to shot angle making it an unfair comparison on my end. I shoot the compound for the enjoyment but I grab the crossbow to feed the family 😊 enjoy, stay safe

Now give each of those weapons to a person not named Chris Bee. Crossbow hands down. I don't even own a crossbow but someone inexperienced could take it and shoot it well, but there would be a steep learning curve to shoot a compound as well as Chris, if ever.

Absolutely true. Dial in a crossbow and a monkey could probably get on target or close to it… a bow on the other hand is much harder at the longer range.

that is true, i used to shoot my compound bows every day, 100 arrows or so a day, did that for 40 years. then when indiana started allowing crossbows for deer hunting i bought one and was amazed when i got it sighted in in just a couple shots and hitting bulls further than i could with the compounds that i put SO MUCH time and effort into perfecting.

I agree, and if you happen to be in the last man standing during the zombie apocalypse, imo it's best to have a crank style crossbow should you be injured or disabled and not have the strength and stamina to use a compound.

I was in the market to buy my first crossbow and was thinking about a TenPoint but after I watched this video I bought a Mission sub 1. I have owned a Mathews compound with round cams and they are really smooth and I know the round cams are smooth and quieter than the really aggressive cams. I also like the way this crossbow loads and the de-cocking function. Chris Bee is amazing to watch and his expertise is really valuable. I have three months to learn to use the crossbow before deer season starts. Great video Chris Bee!

i'm medically unable to use a standard bow. I have an ICD(implantable defibrillator) and they've had guys rip the lead out of their heart drawing a bow. My crossbow has a crank and i can smoke tight groups at 50 yards no issue. I've never tried 100 yards but i suspect i wouldn't be a big deal with it. I started hunting with bow last year and got my first deer(8 pointer) this September. Shot it at 30 yards, went straight through without an issues. Ran about 50 yards and dropped dead. I'm thoroughly hooked on bow hunting now though. A lot of bow guys trashed me for using crossbow saying its not real bow hunting but if that's the case then recurves are the only thing those "real bowhunters" should be using

Great video Chris, but I haved to be honest, I thought the crossbow would win!! Great job getting the compound adjusted and what an awesome 29 at 100yds! This has motivated me to get out and shoot some longer distances. In the past I have only shot out to 50-60 yards for outdoor 3D practice and not nearly enough I might add!! ;) Can't wait for warmer weather out here in the East Coast of Canada so I can get outside and shoot!!

I can't believe it took me this long to start shooting a bow but Im HOOKED and channels like yours, Elk Shape and The Hunting Public fire me up to no end. Thanks mate. Keep up the awesome content. I've shot indoor target 5 spot and can absolutely hold my Hoyt Easton Pro Medalist compound bow steadier than my reverse draw TenPoint Nitro XRT crossbow when not using a a rest of any kind. But using a mono pod with the Xbow or off a rest the XRT is like a rifle.
The long draw length of the reverse draw is also a game changer. I prefer the compound bow as it's more rewarding. The XRT is to easy as it's so forgiving. The compound bow takes a lot of practice to be consistent. Any slight change in grip or release causes fliers. Once you settled in your groups tightened right up.👍
    Nice shooting.😎

People think that anyone can pick up a crossbow and just hit anything at any distance and consider it cheating using one for bow hunting but this proves you still need certain fundamentals to be accurate and consistent even down to having equal pull when drawing the string. Another great video

I guess it comes down to the sacrifice between accuracy and reload time. Crossbows are more accurate but take way longer to reload and bows are less accurate but reload time is way quicker.

Depends what your end logic is.
Because even if compound bow is easier to hold, at one point shooter will be tired faster than crosbow...and if you get tired on a crossbow you can always find a nearby fallen trunk or anything and use as a base.
Besides there are the reloading crossbows with a magazine of 10ish bolts ^_^
And a legolas upgrade for bows as well with amagazine of arrows ^_^

It matters on the way you hold the cross bow it’s like holding a gun you don’t want to death grip the gun or crossbow. Just hold it where ur hand is pushing agents the grip on the cross bow and push down in a slight angle and it should help with the recoil and accuracy or replace the grip with a vertical grip and that should increase ur accuracy. By 100% and if u do Replace the grip with a vertical grip don’t grab it like u would with a actual stick just put ur had in front of the grip like ur holding a burger and push down in a slight angle and put ur hand in a slight angle.

The tension of drawing the string back helps stead you. The crossbow doesn't have that. I became way more accurate when i added a bipod to my crossbow just for kicks. This happened because i could hold the bipod leg and pull towards me to stead the crossbow. Rather than just floating trying to hold the weight.

If you mount the crossbow on a tripod for stability, you will get dead solid grouping that way. Crossbows are a lot heavier, your arms will get tired and you start to shake after a few shots. If you are hunting, you usually sit tight in one place with it mounted and ready to go. pain to carry around as you are walking to your hunting spot or even scouting, but the shots speed and placement are no match to any other bows. I still like to have a compound or recurved bow just in case and for fun! great video bud!🤙

  • @ronniehazelwood7356

If you would have lubricated the arrow flight rails after every two or the shots with the cross bow it would have defeated the compound bow. You had to keep adjusting your sight pins on the compound bow to get it to hit the target but even with the sight pin tweaking it still didn’t shoot as good as the cross bow did. If you had of lubed the cross bow rails the cross bow would have won the contest easily.

Nice comparison, however I think that 6 shots in total are way too few for a valid conclusion. -> Shoot 10x the Bow and 10x the Cross bow. Repeat this process with 10 different shooters of varying skill level and one might get closer to the truth. You sir are a talented / well trained shooter no question there.

Very interesting and nice video. I would love to try to shoot crossbow. But they are illegal in Denmark (you need a weapons license and a police approved range to shoot it). But maybe someday I'll get there. But else I shoot a 42# 30" ATA compound bow, with a draw length of 25½". :-) Mostly for 3D with regards to competitions, but for practice almost only target archery. It is appr. 35 years since I got into archery, but I only started to shoot compound appr. 12 years ago. Well ok, I had a compound bow 30 years ago, because I took a bowhunting licence with it, but I didn't shoot very much with it. And these last 12 years or even longer, I haven't in general shot longer distances than 30 m, because that is my max distance for 3D and because when I tried I didn't shoot well at the longer distances. But during the last few weeks, I have started to out to 50 and 60 m. And it is going surprisingly well, so I am starting to like it. So during the next week, I'll try to get sight marks at the longer distances up to 90 m.
It's interesting to see that the compound bow wins this challenge. But I guess the challenge with crossbow is that you really have to hold it tight and still plus the short arrows are more unstable in flight. But it its very nice to see that you can shoot a 29 p. round with compound at 100 yards. But it is even more impressive, because it looks like the target faces are 80 cm center faces and not 122 cm, that would be the WA standard at 100 yards / WA (if there still was an official WA round at this distance). Very nice!!

For the crossbow you need to do a couple things. Bolt tune second lean more forward and pull the crossbow tighter to your shoulder breath in breath out hold squeeze trigger dont pull it.
This will helo trigger breaking canting and bouncing. Making your groups slightly better. All in all not bad at all.
Compounds will still out perform crossbows but these skills will get you better.

He never even set the scope. 1st shot, 20 yards and 2nd shot 30 yards I used the cross, 40 yards the next line down, 50 the second line and 60 I had to shoot from across the street while he watched for traffic. I used the third line. There was 1 hole in my new foam target, dead center. Blew me away and ruined the center of my foam block. Still use my compound though. Never ran out and bought one.

A crossbow would be a serious advantage over a compound especially with a rest. Much flatter trajectory, less susceptible to range errors, better penetration, etc... But, crossbows are not allowed in archery only seasons in Idaho. If they were, we probably would not be allowed to hunt elk in the rut, or mule deer in winter range. I would if they would let me, but I would also use a sling shot if I had to to be able to hunt longer seasons at the best times of the year. Maybe they should eliminate some rifle draw hunts in ID and replace them with general season cross bow (or even archery) hunts instead.

As much as I love to see the compound win, truth of the matter is most of us are not able to produce similar results. Speaking for myself, I don't have the time required to shoot at this level. At more realistic distances (30-50 yards), and with more novice archers, the crossbow will win every time. Shooting a compound is a labor of love, and I love it and the challenges that must be overcome.

I kind of assume so, anyone feel free to point me to a video where shoulder safety/warmup etc. might be addressed.
That bolt speed compared to arrow speed at 100yards at impact sure is noticeable. Feels like the arrows are barely tapping in by comparison :p

For hunting reasons , I would want the crossbow because it can hold a drawl for basically 24/7 , and you may need to hold back until you get the best shot lined up . Which , I think I would also want a shooting stick/rest . Speaking of shooting sticks : do you know of any that are micro adjustable ; I'm thinking one that has that finger paddle/trigger lock that you find on AR stocks to adjust stock length in mind , but a push button might be ok , not 💯 sure though .

Bet if you tune the crossbow using Victory VooDoo X-Bolts it would shoot a lot more accurately... what I use. But everyone is different... in how they do stuff... and I do archery too... but my crossbows will always be more accurate... also have better scope on my favorite crossbow... any way this was interesting to watch. have a good 2023 coming up soon...

That was great Chris! Can you point me to or show what you meant by not using your double pin? Is that something I need to shoot out past my normal 70 yrd pin set up? Again gret shooting!

What if anything would you change about your process (if anything) if you had a wind flag downrange near your targets showing you real time wind direction?

im fairly sure that you had tuned arrows you shot with that bow
now if you did same with crossbow, having spine tested arrows, you would have sub 1" groups
and as far as i know, you should be able to do that with sub1 crossbow and its factory arrows
thats where the name comes from

I mean, just look at the difference in size/weight/profile of an arrow vs. a crossbow bolt; it should explain the difference and why crossbow shooting ain't affected that much by wind.

You should put a sling on the crossbow. You should watch videos of long range shooters use sling with M1 that shoot with iron sights I guarantee that'll will help you with your steadiness. The sling will let you use your back muscles.

What I’m impressed with most, is how deep the X bow bolts are penetrating the target at that range.

Keep in mind, they are a little over half the length of the hand drawn bow's arrows. So really, it's not that impressive

@@mikeford963 you must be confused! It is impressive; less mass and more penetration.

@@2cthetruth Oh, and cross bow bolts are HEAVIER than most compound bow arrows. So, in the end, it's really not that impressive at all. If they were buried to the fletch, THAT would be impressive.

    • @mikeford963
      @mikeford963 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@2cthetruth I highly doubt it's "more pentration". If his compound arrows are 29" long, and they penetrating to nearly the label on the shaft, vs the 14"-16" crossbow bokts are only penetrating half their length, that's not impressive at all. Also, there is a significant difference in initial velocity as well. The compound is likely shooting in the 300fps range(depending on arrow weight), the crossbow could be 375fps initial speed.

    • @2cthetruth
      @2cthetruth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@mikeford963 You said, "Oh, and cross bow bolts are HEAVIER than most compound bow arrows." What planet do you live on? I hunt with a Ravin. .003 bolt and broadhead = 400 grains. You'd be hard pressed to find someone that hunts with a cross bow that uses bolts/broadheads with a total weight over 425 grains. Now, the average arrow and broadhead for a compound/recurve bow for deer hunting purposes is AT LEAST 650 grains. You obviously have no clue what you are talking about. ALSO, the penetration at 100 yards is highly dependent on the velocity AND mass of the arrow. Take my Ravin 450 fps against anything you can muster up (compound/recurve) and you are toast. PLUS I'd be more accurate. The group of a tuned Ravin can place arrows darn near on top of themselves at 100 yards. To conclude, the obvious goal is an animal that is humanely killed, so who gives two shits of the technicalities as long as that can be accomplished?

Id be happy to hit the target with all 3 at 100yds. Shooting at distance is exciting to me and it could be the risk of losing an arrow. Right now I'm just shooting some v-power arrows. Need to get cracking with my hunting arrows bc all a sudden its gonna be deer season but losing an 8$ arrow is a lot easier to swallow than a 20+$ arrow.
