  • Welcome to Episode 34 of Talking Prisoner. Hosts Ken Mulholland and Matt Batten sat down with the talented Script Writer/Script Editor/Storyliner and Story Editor Coral Drouyn. In this final episode with Coral we discussed why Coral was really sacked from Prisoner, this has never been public knowledge and we broke it first on Talking Prisoner. We also broke down episode 399 (The Death of Hazel Kent) and why Coral came up with that storyline and what the reason for it was to have Hazel written out of the show and how hard it was for Coral to write those scenes. In this episode Coral answered every fan question that was asked of her including other Tv shows she would have liked to have worked on, her time on the short lived soap “Arcade” Why Reylene Pearce (Phyllis Hunt) was written out the way she was, what Coral considered to be the Golden Era of Prisoner, why the disappearance of Nora Flynn and what she thought of Nora as Top Dog, Coral gave us her own personal insight as to why she wrote the scene for Kate Petersons “Tick Tick Tick” solitary scene and what she drew on for that scene, something she has never shared publicly before, This is a ground breaking Episode of Talking Prisoner with so much behind the scenes information that has never been made public before. @Coral D once again loved listening to you tell it as it is. One character I don’t think I’ve heard talked about is the Ice Lady, Sonia Stevens. I gather you created this character. Can you share any insights to how you came up with this character and what you thought of Tina Bursill’s portrayal.

What a joy it has been to hear Coral Drouyn talk extensively about her time on Prisoner. I watched the show when it was first broadcast here in the UK and I have watched it all twice since. It remains a masterpiece of television to this day. It had its faults and continuity issues but the characters and stories were what made it. MORE CORAL DROUYN please Matt!

I enjoyed this enormously. Coral was at the heart of the show for such a long time. With the greatest respect to the artists, I'm far more interested in hearing about the production and editorial side of the series.
Without wishing to underplay the contribution Ms Lehman made to the show, I personally felt that the character of Myra Desmond was more rounded than that of Bea Smith. The portrayal and characterisation by Ms Phelan had more 'light and shade', therfore more believable. My understanding is that Ms Phelan was a more experienced actor too, and not surprisingly went on to enjoy a long and varied career.
Thank you Coral for your candour and enormous contribution to a great television series. Fond regards, Kenny (Renfrewshire, Scotland)
PS - PLEASE write the book!

To Matt and Ken. Thank you for another amazing episode
To Coral. Thank you, thank you, thank you! For all the time you have taken to inform and entertain us on this podcast, for al the stories from how this magnificent show was created and for all those wonderful stories and characters which I still love watching today over here in England.
You really do need to write some books - specifically about Prisoner of course, but also any others both about your life and the rest of the career.
As for having been in for 8 hours - I think you'll find that most of us think it's nowhere near long enough, never mind being too long. We need at least another 8 hours and I do you hope you will be back on again sometime soon as there obviously is so much more you have to tell - not to mention all those characters you didn't have time to go through in the second episode.
Again, thank you so much for all of it.

Wow! Such informative interviews with Coral, I hope there's a part 4! I would love to ask her about Lesley Baker's Tiinkerbell character and whether its true that she was going to turn out to be Monica Ferguson, had Baker not had to leave abruptly. For me, it is one of the biggest mysteries of the series, and who was the officer she was rumoured to be related to, had the character been sent to Wentworth.

Really sad to hear what happened with regards to Coral being unjustly fired. I'm not saying this to suck up but these interviews have made me realise why I liked certain eras of the show better than others and I too have always thought the show went downhill in the late 500s and now I know why. Things are different now we have the Internet. I watch all of the American soaps (B&B Y&R DAYS GH) and I am familiar with the work of all the head writers and know what work they've done in the past. When there's a head writer change on those shows I usually know if I'm going to love or hate the change as some are more plot driven while others character driven but back then we didn't really pay as much attention or at least I didn't. So sad to think that if Coral had stayed we would've had a better 600s era and it would probably have lasted longer.

You guys talk about Louise Silverson around the 57 minute mark. I just want to add she started off playing an inmate character named Tammy as of 387 which is seen in the credits, but never said by dialogue in the episode. It's not until episode 407 I think where Cass Parker calls her "Lou" but credited as "Louise", so they decided to go by the actress' real name by then. Even then this version of Lou was tame and nothing like how she'll later become. She was better off still being "Tammy" here. The unseen character of Cynthia Leech was also originally named after Coral, first mentioned in episode 482 by Meg as "Cynthia Drouyn". Not sure why they changed the last name to Leech (by the 550s I think), but Leech definitely sounded better for the full name.

I'm sure you plucked the name out of the air with not much thought so I'm not harshly criticizing you, but naming Buffy the Vampire Slayer as an example of shows that do a musical episode "for no reason whatsoever" was a bit ill-informed. Not only was there an in-universe reason for the musical in the plot which worked perfectly, AND not only was the musical plot the singular force in driving the season arc forward with consequences for the rest of the show, there were external reasons for doing it too. Sure, after the success of this many other shows jumped on the bandwagon and did it half-heartedly for "no reason" other than following the trend.
On a separate note I TOTALLY agree with Coral about Breaking Bad - it's an AWFUL way to write a main character and the host's "defence" of it made no sense at all.

Val Lehman did what the writers provided, Her acting created the popularity of the show...Yes the writers provided the storylines "BUT" the writers were not performing on the Screen...It's nice to feel you are responsible for writing and creating the show ...BUT...You were not the person seen by the public....To believe Val Lehman didn't provide the Image that the Show needed is just sour grapes of some sort...............Rest of the Interview was informative and interesting...................It reminds me of the old Adage: There's My Side, There's Your Side...."THEN"....There's the TRUTH !!!!

The most neatly written period of Prisoner was the last 40 episodes of 1982, the first 40 episodes of Joan. They really seemed to be on a roll and the stories just played out and interwove wonderfully, culminating with the fire. I liked the beginning of 1983 with Nola too but it seemed to run out of steam. The last of Val 370-400 was awful. Coral clearly thought it was wonderful, but it was boring - sorry. 401 onwards it improved again. 553 until Eve (Barnhurst 5 period) was awful - think of the audience and less of the self-indulgence which was clearly going on there.
