  • Welcome to the fifth episode of Talking Prisoner. Hosts Ken Mulholland and Matt Batten sat down and spoke with the amazing Louise Siversen. We spoke to Louise about her life growing up and how her parents were pushing for Louise to be a Lawyer and not an actress. Louise’s love for theatre and acting and how she got the part of Lou Kelly, one of Wentworth’s most violent inmates, we spoke about what it was like to play Lou and the intense scenes that she had to shoot and one storyline that she did not agree with, we also spoke about the famous Lou Kelly riot and how she felt when she pulled the chair out from the phantom lager Eve Wilder. Louise also spoke with us about what it was like to work with the late great Maurie Fields, Peter Adams, Gerda Nicolson, Joy Westmore and Anne Phelan, and her close friendship with Lois Collinder who played Lou’s sidekick Alice “Lurch” Jenkins. Louise was able to also share with us some secrets about that famous hairstyle that Lou had. Please subscribe to our TH-cam channel and like our FaceBook page

    I loved where Lou escaped and got into Reb Keane's mum's house.
    The way she changed her strong Aussie accent was immense.

    Terrific interview guys. Louise has always struck me as an interesting lady and kept the show strong in its later years.It'd be great to have the actors deliver a line or two and also have them watch the odd key clip for a reaction.

    Does anyone else remember the episode where Lou looked like she was about to hug Daphne after the guards tore up her plants? Or how she warned the nun not to let a man break her heart? The writers didn't give us the opportunity to see Lou's vulnerable side often

    • @TalkingPrisoner
      @TalkingPrisoner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember the episode, what are your thoughts , do you think if they showed more of a soft side to Lou that it would show less of her tough side ?

    • @PaulDoe79
      @PaulDoe79 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TalkingPrisoner I would have loved for us to see more of that side of Lou because it was so unexpected. When I watched the scene with Daphne for the first time I really thought Lou would whip out one of her sarcastic comments but then you see after she tries to cheer her up she starts to reach out to touch Daphne and is interrupted. I also wish we had seen more scenes with Sister Selby as they had some nice heart to hearts

    • @TalkingPrisoner
      @TalkingPrisoner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PaulDoe79 The writers were very clever with the Anita Selby storyline, It really look for a moment that Lou would side with Anita, Did you think the same ?

    • @PaulDoe79
      @PaulDoe79 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TalkingPrisoner yes, which was great as it gave us time to see the relationship progress naturally. I remember when Lou slapped Anita and expected her to slap her back but she didn't. You could see Lou shaken by Anita's faith!

    This is the third time Ive watched this episode with Louise and everytime I've heard it I've heard something different. Louise is a remarkable actress and human being and its wonderful seeing you boys interact with her, and looking like you're both having a blast. One thing which I think would be amazing would be to fill that bottom half of that screen with someone else, maybe reunite Lou and Lurch, that would be awesome hearing them remember together their time on the show.

    Great interview! Lou Kelly was without doubt the best baddie on the show, she believed she was invincible, her riot is up there with the great fire in terms of best episodes and Louise played her perfectly. Great to hear all about her time on the show.

    I just loved this, pure Prisoner talk. I had the privilege of meeting Lou in the UK at a Prisoner convention a couple of years ago, very nice lady, still looks great and is nothing at all like Lou Kelly. On Present day British soaps, so many of the actors basically play themselves and talk and act exactly the same way when you meet them in person, not sure how you can call that acting...

      I know exactly what you mean. It seems that the UK soap casting directors call in unknown young actors who just play themselves but in unusual situations. And they all seem to act in the exact same shouty and indignant way. These classic years of television drama where all our favourites really acted their socks off, need to be really treasured.

    I love this interview. I am convinced that Louise Siversen was the BEST actress in all of Prisoner. I love that Lou wasn't just a vicious character but she was hilarious. She carried the show through the worst time period. After Lexie joined the show it was almost unwatchable but Lou kept me hanging on.

    • @TalkingPrisoner

      I have to agree with you about Lou Kelly and how amazing was it to see the transition from when we first see Lou as just a background inmate to a full blown riot…did you enjoy the riot she held ? I think that was one of the best riots

    • @xfreespirit1979x
      @xfreespirit1979x 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TalkingPrisoner I'm on episode 570 of my 3rd watch... I don't think I have gotten to Lou's riot yet... but the best riot so far was Sandy Edwards... I wish she had been on the show longer (and I wish we knew what really happened -- was she out with the garbage or did she have the most successful escape? She was such a great character and the actress was wonderful (her interview was beautiful too). I love Louise's story about how she went from a background character to the best baddie in Wentworth... amazing they didn't know what a treasure they had in Louise Siversen. My favorite was episode 492 (Lou's day out) where she had Reb's mom hostage and she opened the door to the cops and put on her posh accent and looked like Carmen Sandiego... I think that's when I realized how brilliant Louise Siversen was... and her micro-expressions as Lou Kelly -- every time I re-watch the series I see how incredibly brilliant and amazing she is.

    really interesting to hear Louise's take on Lou's mental state. she was a tragic character for sure.. sometime I did feel for her, but then that is the mark of a great actress, to be able to add nuance and create 3 dimensional characters. She reminds me quite a lot of Gates McFadden in her approach to her work. While there where many great actresses in the show I did feel that most of the more interesting characters where the bad guys, Reb, Lou, Kath, Bev ect...

    She really is a dedicated actress, still learning her trade nearly 40 years after the brilliant performance of Lou.
    My favourite three quotes of hers, the first is the story she was uncomfortable with, but seeing Nora after the miscarriage 'lost a bit of weight Flynn, been trying out that new diet'. The second Ken mentioned discussing Karen Travers 'she dripped enough syrup to give you Diabetes'. The third from one of her early speaking episodes, Cass said she was sick of her rude cracks, 'leave my privates out of this'.

    Lou's character was not the usual TV baddie. She really displayed so many different attributes, and you could actually see her falling apart. She became so trapped by what she had done, and by what had happened to her during her final escape, that she became this unstoppable force. She was so fragile when she came back and you could see that the character didn't know what to do, especially after what she had done to Lurch's family. She couldn't allow herself to feel any real pity, but even then, even then, Louise performed Lou as a human and with the smallest degree of shame at what she did, and she wanted to tell Alice what happened and to explain, but how??? An amazing performance from start to finish. From petty crim to out of control murderer.

    Really enjoyed this interview. One question would've liked you to have asked was how she went from being an extra to a main character, which didn't happen often (I can think of Lurch and Phyllis and Kath to name a few that did this). Also would've been interested on why her sudden exit via Lou's death off-camera.
