"If you care about her deeply, something will happen." Then proceeds to return to town forgetting to return to her painting completely. Yes, he cares very deeply. Even I can see that.
It's like my cat, she loves me, but when she leaves the room she forgets where I am.
I believe Kara was referring to how she felt like she was "in a prison of silk and gold" while living in the castle, yet she struggles without those very luxuries she had come to resent.
Well, she grew up like that. She will not suddenly change that and be fine without any of it.
And so, with magic powder in hand, Will rushed back to town and sold it in exchange for a lavish cottage overlooking the ocean.
Kara never returned to her human form, and though she wished for death, she was unable to die. Eventually, Kara stopped thinking entirely.
Mr. Boling _ pro jojo reference
The Profile pic makes this so much Better~
Like Mario defeating Bowser and going back home to his house.
"...WAIT!? Did I forget something!?"
Meanwhile, Peach grows hungry in her cell.
You should play Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. I met a guy called Vincent in the castle, and was supposed to rescue him. Later on, I escaped from the castle, stood on a hill and watched the castle fall apart, until it was just a pile of rock.
"Um... where's Vincent?"
"I knew we forgot something..."
That acutally happened. Lol.
"Eh, it was probably just another Toad. I'll find the real castle tomorrow."
Okay, at 9:00, when I played this game as a kid, I was certain that nothing of the room had changed. But, I clicked Will because I thought this was an opportunity for the game to say, "Yes, it is YOU that changed as a person throughout your journey thus far!" Or some cheesy BS like that. I had not notice Will's hair blowing in the wind.
Anyway, although this minigame came kind of randomly, it was a fun change in pace.
Kara: ‘thanks for rescuing me’ will: ‘the hell is wrong with you’
I always interpreted it as Kara feeling homesick. Hating the castle while she was there, but finding herself missing it now that she's far from it, and the realization that she's not the same person from then bothering her.
12:58 I think Kara was talking about how when she has everything she doesn't feel herself and feels like she has nothing, but when she's far away she feels like she has everything (possibly because of Will).
"If you care about her deeply..."
"Is he trying to teach me love, is that what this was about?"
(IMMEDIATELY forgets Kara and goes back to town)
(Miss Editor facepalms)
Watermia person: Our water is so nice and always flowing, we use it for everything all the time!
Person from next town down river: Our water sucks. It's full of garbage and poop from Watermia!
Watermia is based on an actual location (as are all places in Illusions of Gaia) in Cambodia, specifically Meychrey Floating Village. The women are wearing sarong tops.
The further away she is, the closer she feels: She longs for Will.
The closer she is, the further away she feels: She's pretty sure right now that he's not interested. Even if that isn't true.
Pretty much what i think she was talking about.
Just a crappy situation for romance. Will likes her too but he doesn't have time to show it since he's busy killing things and saving his friends and the world along with it.
Also, he kissed her, so she will never forget "today".
Seth became a Willy, Lance a ghost, Erik a Meat Shield, Kara a Mario 64 painting, and Will gets a Dark Knight form named Freedan. Someone won the MC lottery...
Don't forget Lilly the flying flower XD
Will gets even better later on. Atleast I like the third character more than Freedan.
Also Hamlet becomes a Yummy piece of steamed ham
@@yaboykel Steamed hams?
I interpreted it as, when she is near Will, he doesn't notice her as much. When she is far away, aka in trouble, then she is actually on his mind.
HOLY SHIT! Thank you very much, Jared Not-Kushner Knabenbauer!!!
THIS is that video game from my past that I've been looking for! What a blast from the past! I remember my stepdad playing this, and me being so confused that the main character kept switching from a boy to a grown up. For the longest time, though, I wasn't really sure if this WAS that game from my past. So I kept holding out through each video to see if this game contained what stuck in my memory most about the game from when I was 5 years old - a town with a lot of water and wooden planks to walk on.
When you arrived at Watermia, I INSTANTLY arrived in my past as a five-year-old where I used to live in Missouri. Thank you VERY MUCH for playing this game and giving me a LINK TO THE PAST!
(Obviously, an intentional Zelda reference).
Again, thank you very much, and keep up the good work!
P.S. REBOOOOOOOT!!!!
Chris Ford I had a similar experience with Chrono Trigger. I remembered the music from the Tyranno Lair, but over time I of course slowly forgot it, but then I ran across the game again, and everything just came back at once!
It's a hell of an experience, isn't it? Video games can be a striking, moving thing - especially when you're a kid. These unique and bizarre visuals and sounds stick in our memory in such unexpected ways. Cheers to ProJared!
And thank god for that DS remake of Chrono Trigger - Since the virtual store for the 3DS is withholding on us money-dropping fans. Much like Nintendo is (probably intentionally) withholding of SO many other games that could easily be on their virtual store.
Ms. Editor saves the day again! =D
You could feel her facepalming because she had to edit all that. xD
A lot of things in this game seem very random when I think about it. Vampires with a time bomb, a guy who turns people into paintings, an airplane when there is no other technology around.
well, technically planes could be made without technology, though he did also make an oxygen tank
but yeah, lots of random stuff, the angel city was random in general, almost filler to lengthen the game
Pretty random yeah but the plane was explained. It was a prototype designed by Neil so it likely was the only one that existed in this world.
Kinda was just the time for these games. Today this doesn't work anymore but back in the day these games were so good.
EX7Sonic I know Neil invented the plane but he still needs an engine and other stuff for it. It was a prop plane after all.^^
Well, this game is still good. I kinda like this randomness. Makes it unique.
This game reminds me a lot of "The Mysterious Cities of Gold" in many ways, with the Pre-Columbian cultures, the continent of Mu and the floating city, all of which are based on real South American cultures and places and histories! Also the whole thing about a group of kids on an adventure and Will searching for his father. It also makes me think a little of the first Grandiawith the whole thing of back when JRPG protagonists who talked where optimistic and upbeat and off on adventures with their friends.
With how Istar was talking, it sounded to me like you could give some magic powder to that angel woman so she could get her lover back from the painting. Guess I was wrong.
Also, that was a weird sentence.
"Luigi's Mansion stole this." ... also Zelda: A link between worlds
"When I'm close I feel far away, and when I'm far away I feel close"
I think that's drowning in symbolism. When you're near something, meh, wish I wasn't. When you're far from it, you long for it. In this case, "it" is "home".
5:44 - 5:48
Luigi's Mansion stole this.
*Miss Editor inserts angry face on Kara*
Burst out laughing!
My favorite series so far. Damn this game has so much sentimental value to me.
I think maybe Kara means when she was in the castle as a princess she felt disconnected from it because it was "the way things were" but since leaving the castle and NOT being that way, she either feels a stronger connection to her home/the castle or possibly she feels so much more aware of her snobby princessness, whereas while she's in the castle it doesn't even occur to her that she IS that way? Perhaps? At least that's how I understood it. Like she got outside of her own head for a second being away from what she grew up with.
Had this game but could never finish it when i was younger so seeing just how amazing this game is now is a real treat. I'll need to pick it up again.
I've had this game for years now and never really gave it much attention, I only saw the first five minutes and got bored because nothing really happend, so I shelved it and it's been sitting there since. But seeing you play this shows me what a great game this is! As soon as you are through with the game I will give it a try, thanks for showing this little gem
5:34
"Illusion of Gaia: a Will Between Worlds"
2:36 No Jared that is straight up from Actraiser. Took me by surprise becouse I forgot about that.
Brian MacClellan there’s a lot of reused assets from act raiser and soul blazer, the amount of soul blazer I’m seeing is actually amazing
Ken Coy yeah, definatly
Those lizard things: "Hi ho! Kermit the Frog Here~"
😊
The game of Watermia is one of the reasons I was able to connect more to the plot of Illusion of Gaia, you have to live/perform all the various events in this game. Like, at the start when you are breaking up a slave ring - it's because one of your friends was captured. They easily coulda just had it be a generic action section but they combined the ludo-narrative.
Kara just got saved and she just hits Will with philosophical shit, haha!
10:10 Ishtar: "if you deeply care for her, something will happen." - Jared literally forgot about Kara being turned into a painting after just 5 seconds.
Jared not talking to Lilly at the end or trying to give the powder to the Angel village to save other women. *sigh*
Jared's only pure love is Kara.
could he still walk back there alone and give the women the powder?
actually there is a bit of game lore to that. One angle says they are happy to be painted, because in the paintings, they are smiling. Being beings who don;t have emotions, they see it as true happiness..
Aaah I didn't think about that! Sigh. Maybe I'll find this game and play it for myself one day so that I can save the cute angel lesbian couple's relationship.
It sure seems like Will leaps to the conclusion that the painting is actually the real Kara surprisingly quickly.
He's psychic.
Exactly.
Those lizards remind me of the singing frogs from Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. I can just hear them singing every time they open their mouths.
Oh the irony of Jared forgetting Kara after doing MEMORY puzzles. Lol
XD Ms Editor's comments when Jared misses something are perfect. She says the things I'd normally internally yell at the screen, but having it on screen makes it funny rather than frustrating.
When Jared got to the last puzzle room where you had to point at Will because of the wind, I was actually excitedly yelling at the computer screen that was the solution because I remember it from when I played the game as a kid myself. XD ...And then was yelling at Jared as he forgot about Kara in the painting like Miss Editor was. XP
She means her place in the castle. Any time she was in the castle, she wanted away from it. But the further she got away from it, the more she wanted to go back.
To be honest, I didn't even notice the wind in my first playthrough. I got it anyway, because I thought it would be something tricky like "I have changed over the course of my adventure".
Jared, I just want to say how much I'm digging this series! I love watching you play games that you're actually having fun with and I think it's awesome that you have so many fond memories of this one. Super invested in what happens next~!
"It's like Highlights for kids!"
...so Highlights?
That's the name of the magazine. "Highlights for Kids". They do three different magazines for three different age groups, babies, preschool, and elementary school.
When I first heard of the Floating City I thought it would floating, like in the air. But water works too, I remember as a kid thinking "I see what you did there video game."
I have seen nothing of this game and really enjoyed it when new episodes go up.
I feel like the city of water, Watermia was named by the same person who named the land of lords, Lordran.
Kara's sprite is used in *cough* some flash games
May be a little bit unrelated but the D&D Idle game has added Diath to their roster! Diath is now an official part of Forgotten Realms!
Thanks for playing this. I’ve been want to replay this myself.
Thanks for showing this off Jared, never heard of it until now but I'm really enjoying the playthrough.
I loved Watermia. The "game" was always fun.
We're now getting to stuff i haven't really seen much of yet.
Remember as we go forward, dear viewers, this game is rated E for Everyone!
This has become my favorite series of the season.
Don't worry Jared, I'm lovig this and I really hope you end up playing the other two games eventually
I kinda think that weird thing Kara said was in reference to feeling like that when she' physically close to Will, she feels emotionally distant, And when they are separated, her feelings feel very present and forward in her mind
That painting of Ishtar could have been Super Saiyan 3 Nappa.
Love this. Getting some real nostalgia watching you play this.
Aw man, now we have to wait until Monday for the next part... can't wait! Loving the series.
Pretty sure that Kara is talking about her feelings for Will; When she's far from him, her thoughts are filled with him and she can't stop pining for him, yet when he's right nearby, she distances herself from him because she's scared of how strong her feelings are.
That Morty python reference was so goooooood
I am really liking this series so keep posting it
"Luigi's Mansion stole this!"
I did not expect this comment. xD LM is a great game
Please please keep doing series like this! Im loving this! I still want to see my favorite youtubers do chakan the forever man for genesis :)
I love how much you love the game Jared. I still have never met someone else who played this except over youtubes. I adore this game and it’s my favorite of the three in the trilogy. Made me learn about the world as I wanted to know more stuff on all the places. Only sad I haven’t seen these until now!
Praise Miss Editor for cutting through Jared's backtracking.
I finished this game back in 1995, after my Aunt gave it to me. She was from Canada and visited me and my family in Europe once in a while. She always brought SNES games with her, because she knew I had one. However PAL and NTSC consoles were different and at first the games wouldn't run. So my mum went out and got me an adapter. I had to plug that into my SNES and it had room for 2 game cartridges. The NTSC would go in the front, and I had to put a PAL game in the back slot ^^ It was very hard to come by such a thing back in the day, without internet shops and the likes :D
However, my English wasn't very good (only had it for about a year in school) and I didn't understand most of the game, but somehow I managed. Funny thing though, I cannot remember most of the story sequences. The dungeons I remember as if I'd played them yesterday :D
Miss Editor...never change.
Also Watermia is easily in my top 5 favorite video game towns ever, it's so cool. Right up there with like, Narshe, Monsbaiya, Goug, uhhh......okay so I don't have an actual list readily at hand, but if I did it'd totally be on there.
Ian Jones I really love Village of Dali from FFIX, Enhasa and Kajar from Chrono Trigger, Narche from FFVI, Rogueport from Paper Mario TTYD, Rito Village from BOTW
Monsbaiya kicks ASS - (Especially since there's a lot of female booty in it). I didn't know anyone else played Azure Dreams but it's def one of the best, most unique games on the playst-.... one of the best, most unique games.
Chris Ford it seems interesting, maybe I will give it a shot
I may have oversold it a bit. It's a great game, but a slow burn - Takes some investment. And there's not quite as much female booty as you may think. It's kinda like partial, partial, partial nudity that's only partial. ... ... But to a ten-year-old, it's awesome. Look up some youtube vids of the gameplay, see what it's all about, and maybe give it a chance. It's like a mix of FF Tactics and Pokemon with some (a lot) of dungeon crawler in there.
It's-...hard to describe properly. Bit of an identity crisis, it's a roguelike dungeon crawler, monster rancher, town builder dating simulator with turn-based combat disguised as realtime action.
The gameplay isn't super intuitive, but there's a lot of depth there if you're willing to put in the time to learn it(which involves doing a lot of reading online because the game doesn't explain it very well, especially the monster fusion aspects).
The graphics are kinda rough, the translation is SUPER awful and there's a really steep difficulty curve but in spite of its flaws it's still probably my all-time favorite game and the only reason I still use my PSP, to play it on the go.
It doesn't really know what it wants to be, tried to be everything, and in the end that made it weirdly unique instead of bland. There really is no other game quite like it. And likely never will be again because Konami is no longer a game company, so any hopes for a sequel or remaster are shot all to hell.
Loving the series, keep it up Jared & Miss Editor!
"When I'm far away I feel close to it. When I'm close, I feel far away. I realize that now..."
Not that different from the Japanese, but there's an important difference that's tricky to translate:
Original Japanese: 遠くにいても 、近く感じて。
近くにいても、遠く感じるものが
あることを 知ったの
[Tōku ni ite mo, chikaku kanjite.
chikaku ni ite mo, tōku kanjiru mono ga
aru koto wo shitta no]
When speaking Japanese you're not generally required to specifically point out the subject and objects in every sentence you speak like we usually do in English. Not only that, this allowance permits you to intentionally leave off who you're talking about if you want to purposefully remain vague about it.
And oh ho ho, is she being vague in the Japanese version! A literal translation of her dialogue would be: "Even when far, feel(s) close. Even when close, it feel(s) far. [I] know that now." It's so vague you can't even tell if she's referring to herself being far/close or Will! But here's the thing....when it comes to young love there's often a fear that comes from revealing your true feelings to someone else, and I think that's what she feels here and why she phrases it like she does.
A person online more knowledgable about Japanese than I actually translated it as: ""Even when you're far away I feel that you're close, and even when you're close to me I feel that you're far away"
I've been enjoying this series and i'm glad you are playing something you like. It shows in your videos, keep up the good work Ms Editor... 😜
So we practically have a serial killer that in the end took his own life...pretty dark.
Didn't know Marik Ishtar was a painter inbetween Yu Gi Oh Seasons.
Nurse Valentine *It all makes sense*
Marik: Obey me, puddle of paint!
Paint: ................
(Marik throws the paint away)
Marik: Curse you, puddle of paint! You have disobeyed me for the last time.
he paints evil paintings of steves
How do you think he can afford leather pants?
Foxxy Boxes!
also #freebeezy
lol Jared I would of forgotten Karas picture lol ... what a weird way to teach love lol... you can tell will is gonna fall for her . . they are realising it
I'm looking firward to the next episode on Monday.
I love this game even though ive never played it but just watching it looks amazing.
10:48 this moment has be brought to you by Duh Enterprises. Duh Enterprises, a subsidiary of Doy Incorporated.
I'm definitely enjoying this, I really liked it when I played it as a kid, and it's helping me remember the later parts (after Mu it's a bit of a blur).
I lost my account years ago, but soon as I recalled this episode, and rememberized that you had a hand in it!!!! Subbed! 😊
It's fun watching Jared trying to make sense of the plot and lines through the absolute MANGLING the English localization team did with this game.
I Will never forget what happened TODAY! Not that day...
Really enjoying this. Thanks Jared.
Really enjoying watching through this game. I'm finding myself very engaged with the plot despite it being pretty odd. Glad youre getting to have a nostalgia trip to Jared. Thanks for the great content man, cant wait for more! :D
Man, I kinda wanna follow Lance's plot a bit. He seems like a cool guy, sure hope nothing bad happens to him in the future!
2:40 That enemy, and it's sound effect, are ripped straight out of Actraiser, another game I played as a child. These games actually shared a lot of sound assets, but in this case it's always jarring to see an enemy sprite be straight-up reused.
The games are heavily related. The Master from Actraiser shows up (talks) in Soulblazer which has similar themes to IoG and Terranigma. Turbo, the dog, is in SB, IoG, and Terranigma.
And, of course, the Jeweler further connects SB and IoG.
Ishtar He’s the Bruiser brother from Super Punchout that followed his passion for painting 😂
7:01 I know it can be considered cheating, but this is where savestates come in handy, savestate on this room and then the second, load between the two looking at the differences.
I just beat this game about a week ago and loved it except for a few things that happen a bit later. Not going to spoil it.
12:57 ...Hm. I am similarly at a loss for what she's talking about...but here's me thinking-out-quiet about it:
[Warning: over-analytical text wall incoming! Also some...maybe not insignificant spoilers for Kiki's Delivery Service? >_
I've come to save Kara! *goes back to town without Kara*
Once again im surprised at the interlaced themes in the game, this playthrough got me hooked lol
17:06
"It was scary, butt fun."
I wonder what the game's English script would look like if the translation were given another pass today. I feel like there are some vague sentences here and there that were just sort of par for the course for SNES JRPGs at the time. I wonder if lines like Kara's "close/farther away" speech would be made clearer. I've noticed the same thing in some of the random townsfolk dialogue. Not that any of that affects my love for this game at all. And I'm still loving watching you play through it. You and Miss Editor are a great team.
Watch jared forget to look behind the house in the next episode!
Those things look like mutant Kermits.
Jared, you should show us the drawing of each character from the different version of the manuals (Japanese/French/American) Its quite interesting ;)
Jared, you cracked me up. Not now, I'm an adult. That would just be weird.
Water = Water
Mia = Mine (spanish)
THAT'S MY WATER
13:00 it could just mean this game has a terrible translation. As amazing as this game is in every other way the translation is laughably bad
Did anyone else here Jared say "Give back car" when he said to give back kara?
Did you know that there’s a sequel to Illusion of Gaia? It’s called Terranigma.
