He hits on a very important theme for him that he will revisit. He says "I'm in a box, but I'm the one that locked me in..." If you remember back in the chorus of Mansion he says "my mind is a home I'm trapped in...". This theme of this box/home/cage that represents his mind as a place where he is trapped, and that he (and you also could argue his fear) is the one with the ability to let himself in/out is a major theme in many of his songs.

He also references in grindin. " This industry is nothing but a box. So I ain't going to climb in it" so this tells me the word box carries a lot of symbolism for NF!

This song saved my life and I used to listen to it on repeat every single day for nearly a year. I had the same childhood as NF. My mom died and left me all alone with an extremely abusive alcoholic father that didn’t care about my grief or my future. I had no real chance to be successful so I turned to boyfriends to fulfill that empty void inside and they took advantage and used me, and abused me as well. I had no siblings, no parents, no family. Still have no one and I feel paralyzed on a daily basis. This song means everything to me.

Whenever I listen to this song, it makes me remember a certain rough patch that I faced in my life... this work of art (the tone, the lyrics, the music) is an unbelievably accurate portrayal of the helplessness I felt & the depressed state that I was trapped in for a while.

it was the first song I've ever heard of him. Its just unbelieveable how accurte this piece of art hits the emotion it trys to represent.

This song helped me understand what I was going through not too long ago. I thought I was suffering with Anxiety but this song forced me to think about it differently and realise more was going on than I realised (I was suffering with depression too); I genuinely believe the day I first heard this song is the day I started getting better. So important to understand what is happening in order to start to resolve it; NF puts this stuff into words better than any artist I've known.

This song meant so much to me at one point. I didn't know anyone else at the time who struggled with severe depression. This song was so validating. It's like he somehow communicated everything I was feeling. The depersonalization, literally not feeling sensations, feeling like I had concrete tied to my limbs, and a mind that just stayed blank. Gosh. It just made me not feel so alone in something that was very scary and shameful to me at the time.
    Love love love NF's music

I introduced my two sons to NF awhile ago. My 15 year old really attached himself to this song. He was diagnosed as early onset bipolar back in 2nd or 3rd grade. Lately when he’s really agitated at home he will play this song on repeat. Thanks for your insight on the song from your professional side.

It is such a pleasure to watch a Psychotherapist react to NF's song not only analysing the lyrics but having a deep interest in his person and his message. I have seen a lot of channels reacting to NF and honestly, you are one of a kind. Watching your content, seeing you inverted in his songs and message is really refreshing.

I’ve been a huge NF fan for years, for so many reasons, but especially how honestly he deals with these difficult emotions. This particular song was extremely cathartic for me because of a struggle that I have had since I was a child. When I was around 12 I realized that I was in a very unsafe place in my home and I could only escape by shutting down my emotions. And so for years after that I felt nothing, emotionally and even physically to an extent. From that day on, even though I knew somethings wrong, I Could not cry to process my own pain. This song in particular meant so much to me, Because it touches on that very experience,I would listen to it over and over and over again and just ball my eyes out, and it seemed the only way that I could let my own grief out was to sing along to this song, Or other songs of his like it.

He does an awesome job painting a picture and writes in an awesome metaphorical way, arguably one of the best. Unfortunately, he hits so much spot on for so many people that can’t write themselves.
Glad you found Nate. As someone who went to school for psychology, it would be fun to re visit some songs and maybe do a more in depth analysis and tell people why the artists may feel a certain way with different theories (repression, Horowitz trauma response etc.)
Love the channel so far, sir

I can't tell you how much this song hits home in my heart for me. I am in the midst of this right now. I was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, and had a bone marrow transplant to beat it, and beat it I did. After a few years, they declared me cured. During that time, my wife went back to work, and she got promoted several times, so she became our family's breadwinner. As a husband and a father, it's absolutely destroying me inside to have us in this situation. My brain no longer works like it used to. My creativity has dropped severely. My ability to pick things up has slowed considerably. I tried to learn programming to find a job that could bring her home, but I'm only mediocre at it. I started up a lawn care company to mow lawns, and found out I'm now allergic to grass due to the bone marrow transplant. Countless things happened.... and I'm paralyzed to change our lives. Not that our lives are "bad" but... who am I? Who have I become? I was a Sergeant of Marines. I was an electronics technician. I went to school to be a pastor and take a stand for God. My life has fallen apart, and I don't know how to put it back together. Who am I? Why don't I feel things I know I should? Why do I feel things I know I shouldn't? Ah... Why am I typing this now? What is tomorrow...

This song can be about that moment of denial mix with
the reality of a sudden loss that seems final as a loved one dying or
those you let down leave you to your own devices... also
I love the distant ominous lonesome 'quitting time' siren at the end
of the first verse... very effective.. ;)

Definitely one of my favorites, which honestly isn't saying much because the majority of his songs are on my favorites list, I haven't found a song of his that I don't like or can't relate to. To be completely honest I barely got five seconds into this particular reaction before I teared up, I've been depressed and lost, searching for redemption for a number of years now and have still yet to find my way to even a modicum of happiness/contentment but NFs music has gotten me through some very tough times to say the least and it's hard to find a good TH-camr that reacts and can appreciate/ actually comprehend the lyrics they're faced with from NF. ❤️❤️❤️

Due to having an abusive family I listened to this song on repeat for two years because my depression hit so hard that I completely blocked everything out so this song was the only thing that related to me. I was paralyzed. Emotionless. If I let everything hit me then I was afraid that I would have gave up on life. I was afraid to lose my faith because I knew that if I did then nothing was holding me above the waters.

Personally for me this is what has stopped me so many times from going farther into my depression. Even if I can't go any further I am at a point of recognition and acceptance that I'm hurting. I honestly cry cause it's like someone is finally understanding everything I've tried desperately to scream out. To tell anyone but no one could understand me.

I know that feeling of wanting to be someone else. I get told by friends all the time and people, to just be myself but when I am I always get judged. It's to the point I'm always too scared to be myself anymore. Or open up. I'm usually cautious with everything I say now adays. Overly thinking about if people will think I'm annoying or being too weird. So I try to be someone I'm not, which makes it harder for me to approach people or socialize. Because I get so awkward and nervous around them. I relate so much to this song. Even with my other family, I'd get blamed for everything. Even now, it seems whatever I do, nothing is right. I could be thinking about making someone happy. Or buying something for someone, and people will turn it on me and instead of appreciating it or saying thank you. They'll nag me about it. why did you buy this when you could have bought us milk etc. If I try and fix something, people around me are always finding something new wrong.Your not working enough. Your not cleaning enough. I don't care if you have depression. I don't care if you have ptsd, you need to drive. etc. I'm always in that mood where even if I try, something new arises, and it just constantly pushes me down that ladder. It's funny how you can find music that relates so much to you.

I think the minimalist lyrics, unvaried cadence, and less operatic production on this track really help push the theme.
For an artist who has shown so much range in other offerings, these deliberate choices almost make you feel stuck in the song. “Paralyzed.”
It’s a melodic tune, and builds and swells, but it really never drops like you expect it too. Just like in life sometimes you can be faced with a situation, and you’re not sure what to do, you think a resolution is coming, but it doesn’t. It can make you feel trapped or stuck. You might have to persevere a little longer…

Can you do I’m Sorry by Joyner Lucas? and I know you usually do lyric videos but I would recommend watching the music video for this song because it has a lot of meaning.

I think the lack of lyrics shows him in a paralyzed state. Like he doesn't care enough to have an opinion on anything.
