-Episode 25-
Hurricane Florence reared it's ugly head at us as a Category 4 storm. With the burden on all locals shoulders to prepare for the worst, we got to work preparing our homes for a beating. Fortunately the storm downgraded, and took a last minute turn, sparing the OBX, but devastating our neighbors to the West and South. Our hearts break for them.
Take a behind the scenes look at what it's like preparing your home to get hit by a Hurricane. I will say though, I didn't film or highlight everything I did, or do, to prepare for a storm. Such as buying gas, making sure the generator runs, buying water, ice, and food, etc... My brain was scrambled trying to edit Ep. 24, prep my house, and film Ep. 25. haha Hope you Enjoy.

LOVE YOU CAROLINA FAMILY! YOU'LL GET THROUGH THIS.
I saved the surfline forcast image when it was 34 feet at 12 seconds! I cannot find it though
Great video - thanks!
that is so nice of you to risk geting hurt to help other people.
Pretty work Brett. Lived there for 10 years we still have a place in kdh. Super blessed to get through this unscathed and praying for everyone else who is suffering. Every time I came to visit beforehand, then even when I lived there, all I wanted to do was drive into the storm. People Like Us are just programmed that way. And most people don't understand that you usually make out worse when you leave. Isabel, one day without power. My folks near Richmond, 10 days. They had to flee to the island, haha. It's all about common sense as you said, and knowing the island and how she behaves. Definitely not advised for occasional visitors. Thank you for being a good man and an example for Christ. After Isabel, I was introduced to the true world of community in the Outer Banks. Everyone came out like ants and rebuilt the island in the spirit of Brotherhood. Awesome to be a part of and it set the bar for my experience living there. Used to go to church in colington with plenty of people you know and I miss the spirit down there. It's just easier to be inspired by God when you live in a place like that. And it shows in people's faith. I watch Ben gravy on a regular and I'm so happy that you guys came together recently on his vlog. He has a great spirit and a good mission. I know he is in touch with God but he never shares that in detail, understandably. I hope you do work together more in the future and you get to have a conversation with him around that subject. Have lots of love for him and I want him to achieve the most he can. You as well my friend. Both of you are going places, even though I'm sure your life will always be there as I wish mine would have been. Life happens. But I get to come back frequently so I'm very blessed. Sorry for such a long note, but I want to encourage you to keep sharing how wonderful life on that island is with others and being an example of faith and Goodwill. This may be your new career. You are being lifted up! That's because, in His Spirit of service, you are lifting others. God bless
Glad you and the family are well. God bless you.
Thank you Brett for the Convoy of Hope donation link! Its good to know we can donate to a good organization that will truly bless the community with Gods love and truth. Thank you Brett for being a great professional Christian surfer and roll model! You are a bright light in this world! Love you man! May Father God bless your family. Keep charging for Jesus!!! Yeeeeewww!!!
I live in Charleston,SC and have done storm preparations since the 70's. I have never left because, like you said, you never know when you will be able to get back home. I left the Isle of Palms for Hugo and stayed about 2 miles from the beach. I took almost a week before we could get back. By that time it had rained hard again after the storm and ended up causing more damage to our homes because we couldn't get to them in time to try and salvage what we could. That is why I'll never leave. I'm confident enough in my abilities to weather it out. And if I lose my life doing so, maybe it was meant to be.
Yeah I live in north myrtle beach and we got the worst winds and rain from florence but thank God it dropped to a category 1 when it hit us . I had 2 generators ready and I did use 1 of the generators because we lost power for 1 day . I did prepare pretty good for it but we made it through . I've been to hatteras like 6 times and I love the outer banks . one day I hope to retire and move up to like nags head
Not gonna lie I miss Hurricane days and the day after offshore conditions. In Wilm we would all go to one house and have Hurricane parties. Cause why not?
Barley, your a legend. Been watching u surf for years. Great edit on the storm!
Hi Just wondering why people houses and businesses dont have removable storm shutters? They all seem to use plywood.
some people do use removable shutters... but its very rare to have a storm strong enough to need shutters. This was the first time I've boarded up in 8yrs.
You knew exactly what you were doing.
You're an amazing human keep up the great work
Brett, I'm glad y'all are safe...and what a lot of people don't know is that a large chunk of a pro surfers career is spent watching and understanding weather systems. And they become as good as any meteorologist. Hurricanes and weather patterns are a good surfers bred and butter...knowing them and reacting to the swells they generate is how they feed their families. I've been through numerous tropical storms, two cat. 2, four cat. 3, and one cat. 4 hurricanes when I lived in Florida, and lost my home in Port Arthur, TX. last yr. to hurricane Harvey, so i know you know what your doing, having faced countless hurricanes and storms yourself. Plus, you being a pro surfer, affords you the skills and experience that most people don't have....So, these people who don't understand are just reacting out of fear in their FB comments because of ignorance, lack of skills and knowledge, and the fact that the only thing the can relate to, is the carnage they watch on the nightly news!
Well said
Wilmington has always seemed to be the Hurricane Magnet. Glad everything worked out for you guys.
Glad to see the outer banks get spared and honestly the southern barrier islands didn't get it like they thought we were. We're outside burgaw on high ground but the rest of my county and surrounding counties are under water. N.E. Cape fear river is over 25ft, 3ft higher than floyd in 99. Crazy to see this 3 times in my life so far. Amazing to see everyone coming together and the amount of support from all over. Can't Express how grateful we are to live in a place where neighbors help neighbors and coast guard, air force, cajun navy, local fire and EMS, police, etc are working around the clock rescuing people and animals. God bless America, God bless North Carolina.
Happened I watched this spring 19' (from a native cent Flo idian)
And the only other state that actually gets it worse than us is y'all.
And with what WE SEE HERE...
(Don't know how y'all do it, cuz it's wearing me out here, every late spring if it isn't in the back your mind, something is wrong.
Best wishes from hurricane alley #2 for season 19'.)
Hurricanes aren't something i look forward to... unless they are spinning in the atlantic on a track nowhere near the coast and just sending swell. haha
Glad to see y'all survived,...send those donations,...now lets see some of those meat grinding barrels,...I noticed the winds were kinda funky this time.
Jesse Pipia ya, the waves are rarely ever good when the storm actually hits. Lose/Lose

Ride Steady anxiously waiting to see how everything did when they start letting people back on the island tomorrow
Glad to see that at least Hatteras got a break I thought for sure you'd get hard but turned out the forecasters were right God Bless everyone that was affected by Hurricane Florence
Brett love the vid..finally starting the cleanup in topsail
Are you a Christian ?
..theres a certain percentage of jerks in the world, of that percentage i'd say most are on facebook and go out of their way to look for places to show off their "jerkdom". ...good to note that they are a minority, and there were more positive comments. Floods aern't fun, we got nailed last year in Queensland, Australia...no flood insurance. We were, and had been living the surfing dream in Sumatra for five years, when it happened...came back home sorted the property, then rented it out again. Had the misfortune of getting the tentants from hell, who trashed the joint. We now back home sorting out yet again...thankfully this time got a landlords insurance payout that almost covers our losses for last years flood event...swings and roundabouts :). but the dream of getting barrelled endlessly is on hold (for now). I'm convinced there's a price to pay when your life is too good..have to pay the ferryman (or the piper) sometimes :) Good on you mate for helping out..I know from experience plenty don't, they just drive by and rubberneck...
Yeww no way dude
